While telling a friend about a trip to Germany, and the great bread-he said "Have you been to Tabor Bakery?", this was my first visit. Excited about Einhorn flour bread, but opted instead for a caraway rye. The taste I had was utterly delicious. The service was typical Portland, about half the time I go to any service place anymore, the server has an attitude of ennui, or worse, smugness. This one was mild annoyance at having to take my order, and when I wanted to add a coffee, actually sighed & gave the eye roll. The person who made my coffee & sliced my bread was kind & pleasant though, not quite making up for the counter person. Good coffee, and bread, expect attitude. read more

Just returned from visiting my niece in Portland. She introduced me to Tabor Bread but they also make the best croissants I've ever had. I kid you not. The bagels and breads are as good or better than in SF. So many to choose from that I'll just have to go back. I got the Einkorn to try as it has less gluten and I can't stop eating it. The service is amazing. Even with a mask you can see their smile. You can tell they are happy working there. I know I would be. Can't wait to return. Worth finding when visiting Portland. read more

It is composed of a filling wheat biscuit with reddish hue and excellent chew, runny egg (so good), melted quality slice of cheese, little bit of garlicky aioli/spread, and a great seasoned bacon. I'm a little biased as a home baker, but Tabor is one of the best bakery/cafes I've experienced, and I've been to famous places in sf, nyc, dc, mia, & lou... The Great - All the bread. I would suggest first timers wanting a to take some home try the focaccia, einkorn, or river loaf. One of those three will more thank likely make you think about their bread every day. I also typically get the oatmilk mocha and was very impressed by consistency of three different people that made them, thus...you won't be disappointed in their coffee skills! Salads and other options are hearty and have their own tabor bread twist to them. Highly recommend anything on the menu. Nothing mediocre nor bad about this place. I have been following this bakery on instagram for quite a while and finally decided to check them out because I was nearby. Loved the inside ambiance, fireplace and selection of wine, coffee and beer on site. Although I cannot imagine buying bread here on a regular basis because of the price (seems quite price for me). I ended up buying a vegan buckwheat muffin, spiced chocolate beet cake, a baguette and a focaccia. Tasted good, will eat them over the week. read more

One of the best bakeries I've been to in many different countries. Had breakfast and an assortment of pastries. Everything was delish.

I walked in here at 2:50 Thursday, knowing they closed at 3. I apologized immediately because I hate being 'that' person, we had been running late and expected to arrive much earlier. I inquired about sandwiches for lunch, to which she replied the kitchen was already closed. Bummed is an understatement. I get that it's a bakery, perhaps it was a long day, but if you're open until 3, I expect you to be open until 3. Since we were already there, I inquired about a sour dough loaf, and the cashier told me all of their breads are sourdough technically since they're all from sourdough starters. Great! Boudin Sourdough is one of my great loves in life, and have yet to find a good local option. Also, I know nothing about breadmaking so correct me if I'm wrong here. She recommended two loaves, and I chose the half bran loaf for $5.75. Bring it home and have a slice to find out it is nothing like sourdough. Fail on two counts. read more

WOAH! We had a delicious breakfast sandwich (on a biscuit) from here and it was life altering. The biscuit was the perfect base for the ham, egg, and cheesy goodness that went on top. I bought a very renaissance-looking round loaf of cherry cardamom red wheat. super fresh, artisan-grade stuff, and although gravity may have relocated some of the cherries, it was an amazing experience, toasted with a bit of butter. I'm not really a carb guy but I will definitely stop in again whenever I'm in the Mt Tabor area. I may bring a narrower vehicle next time, probably a motorcycle- rest assured some of the narrow Tabor streets will challenge your driving abilities if you bring the Escalade. referencing the tone of Devin's Yelp review, yes, I came in just before closing and no, you are not going to get the choicest selection or your peak customer service experience at that time no matter where you go. I didn't get to try the quiche, they had sold out about 4 hours previously. (don't order the fish plate at Burgerville, Devin, I've learned that lesson.) so I bought a loaf of bread and it was spectacular, and the cookies were great. Tabor Bread is a very cute little place! Be aware that Google Maps will take you to the end of the block rather than the front of the restaurant, and the sign will be hard to see from there, so you might feel a bit lost if you map there with Google Maps. Inside is a light and airy space, with nice beams and Christmas lights strung all around the counter area. My partner had the frittata sandwich which was nice, and I had the breakfast loaf, which I did not like one bit (too grainy and earthy). The clear winner though was the mountain bread, a delicious and chewy composition of olives, garlic, and spices I didn't recognize. We had to get another one to bring to a friend!! Tabor Bread is the kind of place I really want to love! It's cute inside, the staff and service is great, there's even a bread oven running in the background. But unfortunately it didn't live up to my expectations. The breakfast menu is teeny tiny, with the only offering of substance being a breakfast sandwich biscuit. I ordered one, and it was just OK There was something on it that was really strong tasting-- maybe an herbed butter? That I found off putting. My egg yolk was already broken when it came out. It doesn't come with any sides. A handful of greens or some potatoes would be a nice addition. I also got a croissant, which wasn't my favorite. It was really dense and greasy. I was wiping grease off my hands after eating it. Maybe they were having an off day. I'd come back again for a coffee and a plain biscuit with jam, but I wouldn't stop by looking for a substantial breakfast. read more

Also they asked me how much I would like to tip and the minimum tipping price was $1.50 for them to grab the bread off the shelf and put it in a paper bag. I used to love Tabor Bread. I would be embarrassed if someone I previously recommended it to decided to try it now after the menu change. The new menu is an atrocity. The sandwiches used to be "bread-centric" in a great way. Now they seem hell-bent on ensuring the bread is the most flavorful thing on your plate. And yeah, the bread is usually very good. But it's still bread. I'd be giving it two stars, but when bread is now the centerpiece of what you are serving your customers, there is no excuse for serving very burnt pieces. Tabor Bread is my definition of heaven: Nutritious, freshly ground grain, sourdough breads that last for as long as it takes you to eat them. Amazing menu items, of which the marinated kale sandwich is i think the best sandwich I have ever had. It is unique of course because it is on their bread; make sure to get it with real chevre if you eat dairy, as opposed to the new change to vegan blah. A warm, calm, sweet decor that feels so homey. The bread are all so well crafted and healthy with their own milled flours. I always like to stop by for one of their baked treats - the Coconut Banana bread is my latest favorite - just the right sweetness, moist and hearty. The chai with hazelnut milk is amazing - with a bit of spicy! My one and only visit to Tabor Bread was in February 2017. They were very friendly and helpful when choosing flour to buy. I bought 12lb of their flour to take home with me and they gave me some sourdough starter with it!! While I was there I also had a grilled cheese that was phenomenal. Their grilled cheese changed the way that I make grilled cheese at home now! So delicious I only wish I lived closer! read more

This one is pretty simple. They make their own breads, have great sandwiches and spectacular biscuit sandwiches in the morning. I've had both the ham and gruyere sandwich, which was excellent, and a ham biscuit, which was out-of-this-world good. Big portions, great bread and biscuits, friendly people. Plus plenty of room to sit and good internet if that's your thing. I'm very lucky to live near this place and will be back often. read more
