The food is ok, a little expensive. Service is slow and the place is dirty. Will not come back.

Tables and surroundings are never clean enough. Except for the bread and butter service, there is nothing special.

Badawest Restaurant - Front Door

The building is in bad shape, and you can see they are working on it, but I imagine that, like everyone else, COVID changed things for them, and the improvements are slow or halted. The worst offense is probably the bathroom ceilings, and the fact that those bathrooms aren't heated. Unfortunately, the quality of the food has slipped in some cases too. The pita and toum are still THE BEST I have had around here - hands down. When I order an olive plate, I do typically expect Mediterranean style olives, but this time I got cheap pimento-stuffed Spanish olives. The stuffed grape leaves were lovely, for the most part, great flavor. But the leaves themselves were on the tough side. The fattoush was perfect. The charbroiled deboned chicken was very tender, and the flavor was nice. The grilled vegetables were quite nice. I think our server was new/er. We had to repeat ourselves pretty frequently, and ask for basic things like silverware and napkins. She seemed confused a lot and like she wasn't terribly familiar with the menu. She was, however, friendly and accommodating.

Shibam Restaurant & Cafe - Lunch chicken schwarma with rice

At this point, I'm no longer making dining decisions -- I'm simply trusting the younger generation and hoping for the best. Thankfully, they absolutely nailed it again with Shibam Restaurant. The moment we pulled up, I noticed the building itself -- a massive former Italian chain restaurant location that has now been transformed into a busy, welcoming Yemeni/Mediterranean restaurant full of life, families, conversation, and incredible aromas. Inside, the atmosphere immediately felt authentic and comfortable rather than commercial. TVs played current popular music videos from Yemen, which added such a unique cultural touch and made the entire experience feel genuine and personal instead of manufactured. And then the food arrived. Honestly, I can't remember the last time I had Mediterranean food this flavorful, fresh, and satisfying. We're talking pre-COVID long time. The menu had an amazing variety too, whether you love richly seasoned meats or incredible vegetarian dishes packed with flavor. Tender grilled meats, perfectly spiced chicken, lamb, rice dishes, fresh-baked bread, creamy hummus, vibrant vegetables, savory stews, and vegetarian options that were so good even the meat lovers at the table kept "sampling" them off everyone else's plates. Every dish tasted authentic, layered with spices and fresh ingredients, and clearly prepared by people who genuinely care about the food they serve. The portions were enormous as well -- the kind of meal where you happily realize halfway through dinner that tomorrow's lunch is already handled. Nobody leaves hungry here, and honestly, you probably won't stop thinking about the food afterward either. What really elevated the experience beyond just "great food" was the service. The staff was warm, attentive, patient, and genuinely welcoming from beginning to end. You can absolutely feel that family-owned pride throughout the restaurant. It doesn't feel like a corporate operation trying to imitate culture -- it feels like culture being shared with you. If you enjoy authentic Mediterranean and Yemeni cuisine, generous portions, outstanding hospitality, and a restaurant with a real atmosphere and heart behind it, do yourself a favor and visit Shibam Restaurant. Places like this are exactly why local restaurants matter.

I always went to the cheap Chinese place next to it, with their mediocre food and cheap prices. Other restaurants in the Food Court of the Valley mall have come and gone. Just today, after done at the gym, I noticed that The Palace, the pizza buffet thing, and the two Chinese places (which have the exact same food and the exact same prices and I'm certain make use of the same kitchen) were the only ones up and running. The Philly Cheese steak restaurant is gone and so is Subway and so is whatever the hell was on the end, far away from the others. I'm pretty sure it was a Soul Food shack. I never ate their food. So, on a whim, I decided to finally try The Palace. The menu reminded me of all the typical coney islands and diners around Flint: sandwiches, burgers, coney dogs...and gyros. I've had a gyro* from Arby's before and thought it was pretty decent. I think I may have had a gyro before from a different Greek coney island, but if I did, it didn't make much of an impression on me. At the Palace, the total is 9 bucks or whatever and I'm thinking to myself "Well...if it isn't good, then I only spent 9 bucks." I sit down and start nibbling. I'm a grazer and I don't eat a lot in one sitting. Before I know it, I've almost finished the gyro. The pita bread is nice and firm, the meat is delicious and the sauce is tangy and sweet and compliments the meat well. The fries, however, are typical fries. Fries are always good. Fries are my favorite food. You REALLY have to make some bland-ass fries for me to not eat them (Tia Helita's anyone?). Here the fries are decent but nothing special and have no interesting seasonings or flavors going on for them. *Mediterranean taco is truly a better word for Arby's "gyros" which are absolutely awful in comparison to the sandwich I just had at The Palace.
