There are restaurants one visits for the chef. There are restaurants one visits for the wine list. And then there are places one visits because the walls have been classified by the French state as more important than anything currently being served beneath them. Le Cochon à l'Oreille is the third kind. The hand-painted ceramic tiles -- a Monument Historique since 1984, depicting Les Halles in its thunderous, market-heaving prime -- are among the most quietly extraordinary interiors in Paris. They were fired by the same Belle Époque manufactories that lined the walls of the Paris Métro. They were reason enough to walk through the door. The food was good. Genuinely so. But atmosphere is not decoration -- it is seasoning. When the room promises one century and delivers another, even a well-executed plate arrives already compromised. The kitchen did its part. The rest of the house did not. The music was modern. I will repeat that, because it merits repetition: in a room whose tiles were fired in the Belle Époque, the soundtrack was indistinguishable from a mid-range hotel lobby in the 14th arrondissement. A gramophone. A chansonnier. Even a tasteful playlist of period recordings -- any of these would have cost nothing and transformed everything. When we visited, the room held only a couple finishing their meal as we arrived, and ourselves. By the time their plates were cleared, we were alone inside. And yet, the owner was eating behind the bar. I do not begrudge anyone a meal. But in a monument this loaded with history, even a quiet afternoon is a performance. The stage was set. The cast, it seemed, had not been informed. And the staff -- pleasant, I must say -- wore nothing to suggest they understood where they were working. A white apron. A waistcoat. Some small gesture toward the era these tiles fought to preserve. Chef Apostolski trained under Robuchon. He knows what mise en scène means. One wonders why it stops at the kitchen pass. One visits their website hoping, perhaps, for context -- some acknowledgment of what makes this address singular. There is none. The site is images and a menu. The Monument Historique classification, the ghost of Zola's ventre de Paris -- not a word. A restaurant that cannot be troubled to tell its own story online is unlikely to tell it in the room either. Le Cochon à l'Oreille is a privilege disguised as a bistro. The tiles deserve a director. What they have, at present, is a tenant. Come for the tiles, stay for a perfectly acceptable lunch, and try not to mourn the version of this place that should exist but doesn't.

In the two different times we came here, we have tried the boneless chicken kabob, the baby chicken…read morekabob, and the hot tea. We came back here a second time because the food was delicious, but good food can easily be eclipsed by poor service, and that was the case the second time we came here. We were here for about two hours, most of that time was spent waiting. First, we waited to be served - both servers thought the other server had already helped us. Second, we waited for the food to come out. Finally, we waited for the check to come out. To elaborate on waiting for the check - we repeatedly asked our waiter for the check, and he kept telling us it would come soon but it never did. He rudely ignored us quite a few times when we tried to follow up. The other waiter (who was much more polite) explained to us that the delay was due to some issue in the kitchen - that explained the wait for the food earlier but we were waiting for the check, not food. Finally, we went up to the counter, saying that we would like to pay. The guy at the counter produced our bill and we paid immediately so we could leave. We noticed that other people were getting helped much faster than us. We weren't sure if they were snubbing us on purpose - either because we weren't Middle Eastern or because we spoke English - or if they were genuinely very swamped and we fell through the cracks. But for fine cuisine, for what we were paying, neither of these reasons is acceptable. There are plenty of other Persian restaurants in Paris - I recommend trying a different one.

We both ordered the 25 Euros Fixed Menu, which comes with an appetizer, a main course, dessert, and a glass of wine. For the appetizers, the Duck Liver Pâté and Smoked Salmon were very tasty. The main course, Duck Cassoulet and the Sole Meunière were delicately cooked and delicious. For dessert, we had the Caramelized Apple Tart and the Profiteroles, Heavenly! We look forward to going to this restaurant the third time when we are back to Paris.

Astair was the perfect choice for our last lunch in Paris…read more One of my favorite discoveries from this trip was Paris's beautiful covered passages. Thanks to our tour guide, we walked through several of them, including Passage Jouffroy and Passage Verdeau. I never knew these places existed. They were filled with charming little shops, restaurants and cafés, and their glass-covered walkways provided a welcome escape from the summer heat. We often used them as beautiful shortcuts while making our way around the city. Astair is tucked inside Passage des Panoramas, one of the oldest and most atmospheric of these passages. The restaurant has a stylish French bistro-chic feel, with a beautiful circular bar at the center that gives the room such a warm and lively energy. It feels unmistakably Parisian without being overly formal. For lunch, we had the traditional French onion soup, Burgundy escargots, the côte de bœuf to share and profiteroles for dessert. The onion soup was rich, comforting and beautifully gratinéed. The escargots were superb and easily my favorite, with plenty of garlic and parsley butter. The côte de bœuf was generous and beautifully cooked, while the profiteroles with ice cream and warm chocolate were the perfect ending. The service made our final meal even more memorable. Our server, Tia, was exceptionally friendly, accommodating and attentive throughout lunch. The Filipino manager, whose name I unfortunately forgot, also made us feel genuinely welcome. Everyone was warm and gracious. Wonderful food, exceptional service and a beautiful setting inside one of Paris's hidden passages. It was such a lovely way to end our trip. I would definitely return, especially for the escargots and profiteroles.
