This review is for a dinner for two at the bar on a Thursday evening. Service: Service at the bar was great. Very attentive without being intrusive. Bonus, you get to watch a number of tapas being assembled. We felt like our servers were able to guide us through the menu, which - like all tapas places - can overwhelm some diners. All the server's recommendations were helpful. bar I found an IPA, so I was happy. They had Oasis Metamodern in cans. My wife went with her usual cosmopolitan. I know we should have been drinking Spanish wine, but - hey - we are stuck in our ways. The wine list is impressive and well-constructed, but come prepared with some knowledge of Spanish wines or be open to advice from the waitstaff. food Being good tapas consumers, we worked our way through seven or more small plates. For Pintxo, we had the two of the date and two of the beef, both of which were excellent. We tried the chicken and manchego croquette, albondiguillas cordero, sweetbreads and alubia chorizo. All were great. For classics, we also had papa bravas and the tortilla espanola. There are as many versions of both dishes as there are tapas restaurants. Tabernilla's renditions were solid. We didn't feel the dollup of sour cream on the papas bravas added anything special? All in all, this kitchen is producing some of the most interesting food in the region. Remember, it's a tapas place, come prepared for a long evening with lots of taste treats and don't be shocked at the price - it's worth it! details The space feels intimate, without feeling small. We felt sitting at the bar was especially appropriate for a tapas place. They are clearly set-up to handle those who want to sit at the bar. Probably closer to 4.5 stars, but very very tasty tapas. Ordered the Patatas Bravas, Aros de Calamar, Queso de Cabra Cruijente, and Bife de lomo do porto. The Patatas Bravas were cooked to perfection, crispy outside, tender, piping hot inside, the sauce was good, but accentuated when dipped in the chili and salt mix. The Queso de Cabra was really really good, little croquettes of goat cheese, deep fried and topped with a honey/orange glaze. I could have eaten a dozen (only get 3/order). The Aros de Calamar were nicely fried, not too oily and crispy. The dipping sauce was subtle, but good. The steak with anchovy/port butter was OK...I ordered medium rare, was probably closer to medium. I've definitely had better steaks, but this wasn't a dedicated steak house, so they get a pass. The steak was more than acceptable. The house red sangria was tasty, not too sweet, not too bitter. They also have a great collection of tequila. Enjoyed a glass of Clase Azul with dinner. Overall a great experience, would highly recommend, definitely one of the nicer places to dine in Laredo. read more

OMG. SO GOOD ! Jerry the Manager recommended a few apps which is what this place mostly consists of. Small little bite sized samples of Spaniard goodness all in one bite. Drinks? Bomb Prices? Cant beat them. Will definitely come back and hopefully have my same server Beto. He was our server at another restaurant that week and he remembered exactly how I like my drinks. I was very impressed! I had a charcuterie board and a beer. Great selection of drinks. Very knowledgeable staff. Food was delicious!! The decor is perfect and was accentuated with perfect music. It seemed like a great place for a quiet romantic dinner, unfortunately I was alone... the manager took my order and I referred to his expertise for the meat and cheese choices. This may be my favorite restaurant to go to in Laredo now! Me and my girlfriend went yesterday and the service, food, and wine was amazing. The only down part is if you're super hungry and want a big meal it's not the place to go. But the variety of dishes that were so different than anything I've ever seen was amazing. The owner even came over to our table to help us choose different cheeses and meats for our platter. Overall a great experience and atmosphere. Will definitely be here again! read more

Been here several times and I go here every time I'm in Laredo. Best tapas restaurant I've been to; San Antonio, Austin and Dallas included. Very reasonable and everything is delicious. I especially like the Bife de Lomo, Panza, and my favorite is the Datil. At a few dollars each try them all! And Estella Daura from Spain... Happens to be gluten free which isn't my style... Could not communicate good, seemed like he wasn't happy with his job and at the end threw our bill on the table and walked away. I will start saying that we chose this place to go out on a date, and celebrate our anniversary; I don't regreat a bit. We found here in the app. We had a great time and got to start a conversation about different things, even my husband said he felt he was somewhere else than Laredo (somewhere in Europe? Spain) Totally great looking place, a lot of movement of people coming in and out, two bartender, Sam and Aurora, the second one being our server too since we sat at the bar (as a suggestion of a yelper that I enjoyed). The owner invested very well, and I just can say it is a place that we should visit to keep it on the list of best restaurants in town. I wouldn't bring my children because they usually don't like to try new things, but if you bring them, the "croquetas de pollo" should be a good thing to ask for, they have manchego cheese on top, way better that nuggets! Three stars because I can't give 2 1/2. For someone who's never been to Spain or Portugal or to a Spanish restaurant in DC, Miami, Houston or NY/NJ, it is decent, but if you are looking for SPANISH TAPAS, this is NOT it. It is a very nice try but comes short in authentic flavors. -Tabla de J&Q: Jamón serrano and manchego (you can find better at HEB), miniature olives (cute but lacking) -Octopus: so overcooked you can barely find any among the mushy potatoes and then if you do, they are very chewy (not a good thing) -Tortilla de Patatas, a little too thick, hence very dry in the middle -Patatas bravas (deconstructed) a bit strange but at least potatoes were nice and crispy and sauce itself was good although served in the side with another side of salt and pepper flakes (???) -Fried calamari was over-fried, dry and chewy -Asparagus was good -Gambas al ajillo: could still taste the chlorine of the shrimp, simmering in a Latin/Spanish fusion sauce. They were pale instead of browned -Mollejas al Jerez were decent (sad that they didn't have the classic Riñones al Jerez) -Crema catalana: more of a grainy Crème brûlée -I asked the waiter for some Spanish Brandy and he offered a French Rémy Martin COGNAC (not same as brandy) Fortunately later he corrected himself and offered 2 proper brandies. -NO SPANISH GIN options (considering Gin Tonic is big in Spain and you can find Gin Mare and also Mahon at Costco and Total Wine and I'm sure in NL there's plenty more options) Server did his best in everything, no complaints except better knowledge of drinks would be super. Some adjustments to the recipes and it could be a very nice Tapas place. Interior and decor were nice, but to a restaurant you go for the food, and it was LACKING..... good luck in the future....... read more

Only tried small plates: pintxos--panza and datil. Panza is roast pork belly and duck and dates. Both excellent. Patatas bravas, esparragos serranos, albondigas, and farines y camarones (favorite). A Tapa restaurant can be amazing or horrible.... there isn't anything in between. From the moment you walk into a tapa restaurant you have to feel like you were just transported to a cozy little restaurant in Spain. Tabernilla does that!! It's the perfect size for an intimate night with a loved one or a small group of friends. The owners took their time with the design and layout of the restaurant. The staff was warm and knowledgeable about the menu which is soo key when dealing with a menu such as this. The menu is well crafted and you can tell the food is fresh. You can watch them make many of the cold dishes right behind the bar. The wine reflects the food they serve which is a huge bonus. Now would the food hold up to my already high expectations??? YES!! Beautiful presentation and the flavors..... out of the park!! Laredo has a gem with Tabernilla and shows the future for this city. Really great takeout experience. The staff was very helpful in letting me know whether a dish was vegetarian, and everything I ordered was delicious, especially the chickpeas and the crispy goat cheese with hazelnut honey. I do wish there was less styrofoam packaging but I realize that is a challenge. The restaurant seemed to be taking Covid seriously as well with their protocols. Definitely a step up from typical Laredo tacos. They offered a superb selection of tapas that can't be found anywhere else in Laredo. Portions are super small but that is the point: small so you can try everything. Too bad they have a full price on everything. Wow. For those not from here this will make you feel for a moment you're elsewhere. The tapas was amazing. The albondigas, octopus with potatoes (I know it sounds bad but it wasn't in any way), the fried calamari and shrimp in garlic sauce and baguette bread was just simply amazing. The paella was okay but not bad. Salmon was fresh and amazing. Overall this place is in one word--quality! Prices were fair considering how good it tasted and the service and decor. Lolita's is the place I'd say you can get great food at every day price and this place, Tabernilla is a place for the special moments--again amazing and best restaurant in Laredo hands down. read more

Ok food still great but service ...wtf happened? Everyone seems so mad and unfriendly. Ok new bartender or at least to me, gave me menus walked away. She didn't know I haven't been here so 3 menus thrown at me was like uh ..wth. I was given major attitude. The ladies just seem to be on cell phone at edge of bar. I never could ask about wine menu. I asked for a certain item and was given something else. I ate it cause I've had it before but never once did any one ask how was dinner, etc. I love this place but seems to be changing staff and not for the better. So sad, places close quick cause of nasty unattentive service like today. Noone greeted me at door. No biggie for a person of one but this place ..hmmm . This time I have a bad taste in my mouth. Picturesque and vivid tapas restaurant. Ambiance and decor is reminiscent of tapas bars throughout Spain. Service is attentive as helpful. Except for the hostesses at the entrance, that kept loudly cackling throughout our stay (which made it uncomfortable as unacceptable for a place aiming for very high standards), the rest of the crew where on top of their game. The food- We were a party of four and ordered a tabla with four different meats (chorizos, jamones and lomo) as two cheeses. The tabla came with some marinated olives, fig preserves, honey and almonds. We had to ask for a serving of olive oil as the accompanying bread was served plain. We got a few tapas from which the lamb meat balls as the chorizo and fava beans excelled. As entrees we ordered the tagine which exuded with flavors of cumin, cinnamon and preserved lemons. It literally made me travel to Marrakesh and Tangiers. We also ordered the cod, which I was impressed by its freshness and spicy execution. The reason I am not giving the 5 stars was their paella. The paella was brought burnt and the rice lacked the distinctive yellow color a paella has; it had a blackened color and a burnt scent all over. I returned the paella and was offered a new one. I accepted as I understand accidents can happen. The next paella, did not impress nor surprised. Luckily the rest of our night continued happily as the sangrías kept flowing. The red sangría was velvety, rich and deep. The white one was crisp, tangy and fresh. We finished with Oporto cake over espressos. I certainly will be back, as this is currently the most innovative, jolly and epicurean restaurant in town. There are plenty of other tapas, pintxos and montados to keep trying. read more
