My first time trying Tapas!! I was super excited, but those who have had Tapas described it as Spanish dim sum because essentially you're having many small plates of dishes. My tour guide was telling me about the origins of tapas and although there are very many stories, this is the one she told us. She explained that tapas in Spanish means lid or cover. Back in the day, they would use cover to cover up the flies that kept eating their food, but because the lids were never really big, the plates of the food needed to be very small,
I dined with five others and in total, we got nine dishes.
1) a selection of salami/sausages with cheese bread sticks
2) cheese with bread
3) green peppers
4) shrimp in olive oil
5) goat cheese with jam and a salad on the side
6) giant meatballs in yellow sauce
7) sausages and thin fries
8) calamari
9) dessert - pudding with whipped cream
Everything tasted alright, there was nothing in particular I was extremely in love with. However, I thought that the goat cheese with jam and salad on the side was VERY different. I've never had something like it before where this inside is melted and gooey, but the outside appeared to be coated by breadcrumb type textures. It also had a weird lamb stench in this dish if you consume it without the jam, so please consume it with the jam, or else it will taste like lam stench and even a little bitter.
We consumed the 1st and 2nd dish together as we ate it like a bruschetta without tomatoes, but replaced with cheese and salami/sausages.
The shrimp was very soft and soggy - the Spanish styled shrimp and definitely very oily as it was in a plate of oil.
The giant meatballs with yellow sauce - I don't remember nor could I taste what the yellow sauce was, but it had frozen peas in there. Also, this wasn't too hot, so it was like a warm giant meatball.
The sausages and fries were very thinly sliced compared to the usual American cutting of sausages and fries. Finally the calamari and dessert was fairly standard. read more
