On my train ride from Cuenca to Valencia, I heard from the conductor that paella originated in Valencia. How did I not know about this??! Since then, I've been on the hunt for the best paella. Unfortunately, most of the highly rated restaurants serving paella required at least 2 people present for the meal. And as a solo traveler.. what terrible news. BOOO!
So after walking aimlessly for about 6 miles around and around town, this place's sign that advertised VALENCIAN PAELLA + SANGRIA for 11,90€ caught my attention. I walked in and chose my seat in the far back of the restaurant. It was more dimly lit, and away from the smoke of cigarettes.. (thank, God -- I think I may have second-hand inhaled about 7 packs of cigs within 2 weeks. My poor lungs.)
They first brought a basket of white bread, the medium sized glass of sangria and a plate of paella within 10 minutes of sitting down. I was hoping to taste rabbit since that's what traditional Valencian Paella consisted of. And although I never had rabbit in my life, I'm 98% positive that there was absolutely no rabbit in there -- just chicken. Everything was jumbled together. Not sure how traditional the food was. Sangria tasted great. Lots of huge ice cubes so it was pretty watered down towards the end. Honestly... not sure if this was worth the price. I've seen better looking paella in grab-and-go places along the streets for only 4€ a plate. I'd honestly just pass on this and go elsewhere for more authentic experiences. read more
