I'm pleased to report that at Navarro, our experience was nothing like that; from the moment we arrived we were made to feel like old friends who were long overdue for a return visit. This all made sense as the highly rated and reputable Paella restaurants were open from 1-4:00 or so. One thing for sure make your reservations before you get to Valencia. We were lucky and got a table at 3 a day before. Smaller/cozy spot and looked like they had a 2nd level. We started with a Sangria and a Majou. For appetizers, it was the recommended Gambas with Chili Aoili-exquisite -I was really concerned that we couldn't get any better after this. The Bread with Aoli and olives was also tasty. Paella Valenciana (with Rabbit/Chicken) is the authentic one and has to be ordered a day in advance. We ended up ordering the Seafood (de Marisco) Paella which can be ordered same day. As soon as we walked in, the people who worked there were so friendly from start till the end. We ordered Lobster Paella and grilled vegetables as a starter to carry us for a 35minute wait. The vegetables reflected the freshness we saw earlier at Mercado Central. There was a smokiness to the variety of vegetables and they were perfectly seasoned and grilled. Then came a picture of perfection...our Paella de Bogavante with lobster, prawns, swordfish & squid. It was one of the best we ever had - the lobster was well cooked and the rice had a nice aroma hitting the nose before you even tasted the delicious morsels of indulgence. I had the house red wine and finished with an espresso. We loved our meal and the service so much that we made another reservation and ordered the Paella Valencia. We can't wait to go back! Typically when one arrives to the birthplace of a dish, it is a struggle to find a bad variation of it. New York style pizza in the streets of Manhattan, lechon in mountain alleys of Puerto Rico, Mofongo within the hustle of Mexico City and the list goes on. But, how wrong was I about paella and Valencia. If there is one dish I've been eating daily in Valencia, it is undoubtedly paella, which was invented here. Rice was introduced to Valencia by the Moors over 1200 years ago and it is still today the main rice producing region in Spain. It started as farmers food and was mixed with whatever was around (like rabbits), cooked over open fire. Stories suggests that the dish was first prepared by a man for his fiancée and that the word is a corruption of 'para ella' (meaning 'for her' in Spanish). Stories aside, after dining at several restaurants in Valencia and ordering paella, Navarro was the only one where I could comfortably say: this is delicious paella. The variant with snails and chicken, in traditional Valencian style was the group favorite. The cod paella was good, but for an acquired taste, as it is very salty and fishy (which does seem to be a popular method of preparation of many foods in Valencia). The other dishes were stellar, such as the grilled vegetables loaded with their natural flavor, the calamari, fried prawns and unexpectedly, the house made chips. Best chips in the world. The environment of the restaurant is wonderful, nicely decorated, but not overly formal or casual. Thus, it can be flexibly used to celebrate an occasion or as a simple meal. Reservations are needed well ahead here. The people working are extremely kind, accommodating and attentive. All around, outside Michelin starred establishments for gastronomy, Navarro was a clear favorite from the restaurant scene of Valencia and a highly satisfying meal. read more

We did not make a reservation here, so our wait was pretty long. So lemme start with: MAKE A RESERVATION!! That part was our fault though, no points docked. The staff were also super friendly and apologetic about the wait, despite the fact that they didn't need to be! We came here to try the paella. I mean, of course, since we're in Valencia! After getting seated, we ordered their sangria (with red wine) and the seafood paella. The glasses of sangria came and they were HUGE. We had just come into Valencia after travelling in from Granada, so we were a bit tired and hungry. When the seafood paella came in, it was also HUGE. I was so satisfied with our meal. Yes, I agree with some reviews that the paella was a bit on the salty side, but it wasn't so terribly salty that you couldn't eat it. In fact, I thought it was pretty well done, and my friend and I managed to eat the entire pan of it. Navarro was pretty expensive, but I thought it was worth the splurge. I'm glad we made a reservation at this restaurant! We got there right around 2 PM and they had our table waiting for us. In hindsight, I wish I had requested outdoor seating because the weather was PERFECT! Unfortunately, every table was already reserved. So, every photo you see in this post was well worth the 5-star rating! If we could have licked the plates clean, we would have! I'd like to think my parents raised me better than this. LOL! We went for the Paella Negra (paella cooked with squid ink) only because it's not something we typically have back home. Seriously, this was one of the best we've ever had! When in Valencia, eat paella. If you can, have it at someone's house...that's the best option. But if you're looking for a restaurant, this one comes highly regarded and was the one recommended to us by everyone (and every online list). Make a reservation if you can, that way you can order the paella in advance (it takes at least 45 minutes to properly prepare). We didn't have a reservation but they had room for us. So we ordered our paella right away (Paella Valenciana) and then a few tapas/smaller dishes and drinks to enjoy while the paella was being prepared. Pan con tomate was really good stuff. Everything was laid out so you could assemble it the way you want--fresh crushed tomato, olive oil, salt, and this amazing garlic aioli. Gambas al ajillo were nice and came with a great sauce for sopping up with bread, but we've had better. Croquetas with ham were sooo good. They were pretty big too and also came with some tempura veggies on the side. Fire. Then the Paella Valenciana arrived. It was for two (you pay by person and have to order it for at least a minimum of two) but easily could've been shared by 4 people. It comes with romano beans, butter beans, artichokes, rabbit, chicken, and snails. They did a pretty good job getting the socarrat on the edges, which is always the highlight of the paella. This was one of the most expensive meals I shared with my husband on our recent visit to Valencia. With three appetizers, a paella and four beverages our bill came out to €74. But it was a lot of food. A LOT. We didn't have a reservation but they were able to seat us at a table inside. We decided to order a couple of small tapas while we waited for our order of Paella Valenciana. + Pan con tomate - 5/5, the dish came with all the stuff on the side for you to put as much or as little tomato as you'd like. Also want to hype the super yummy garlic aioli it came with, tasted sooo good with the tomato. Olives, also can't go wrong. + Croquetas with ham - 5/5 super yummy, and pretty large. The rabbit and chicken were cooked perfectly and I loved the beans and flat Romano beans. It also comes with caracoles (snails) which were not for me, but since I'd never had them before im not going to rate the paella low because of that. We had this place on our must visit list and made reservations far in advance. We wanted to try the Valencian paella and to do so you need to notify them a day in advance. We made reservations for 3pm and the restaurant was full. They explained it would take about 30 minutes for the paella so we ordered several appetizers - grilled veggies, croquettes and bread with garlic mayo, tomatoes and olives. Loved the grilled vegetables!! We also tried a pitcher of red wine sangria. It was fruity and refreshing. The star of the meal was the paella! It was delicious and we ate every bite. The best meal I've ever had while traveling abroad. This family owned establishment is competently run by Guillermina. She made our party of seven feel exceptionally well attended. The servers are a welcome departure from their brusque counterparts in Spain. The region's and restaurant's reputation is based on the paella which takes around 30 to 45 minutes to bring to your table so it requires a degree of patience. My wife and I came here for the seafood paella for two since we were visiting Valencia for the first time. The paella was really salty and there was no caramelized base to it just scorched around the edges. The rice was undercooked. It was not good and we didn't finish it. Probably my favorite meal on a 14-day Mediterranean trip. We were lucky to get in, being first to be there at lunch. It seems that reservations are the way to go, but we didn't know. Again, lucky. Everything they brought was amazing. The aubergine and parmesan millefeuille on pumpkin sauce was lovely and innovative. I have never had shrimp with such a velvety texture as the King prawns in garlic sauce. I wish I could figure out how they do that. Even the aioli with the bread and olives is hands down better than any I have had for years, since Roussillon, France. And the paella...I have never really been a paella fan, but would eat this one again and again. I highly recommend the pear and chocolate cake, and the creme caramel is some of the best ever. My all-time favourite restaurant in the world. (Maybe I'm exaggerating, at least top 5 for sure). What gave me this impression was the amazing staff, service and food quality we received. English is by no means their first language but they made a serious effort to communicate with us, which I really appreciated. We ordered 3 portions of the seafood salad. Several things to note: 1. you have to order at least 2 portions of any of their paella). 2. 1 paella per table. So your table cannot get the seafood paella AND the vegetarian paella. Our waiter said this was because of their small kitchen setup, which doesn't allow for many paellas to cook at the same time, as each paella takes 40 mins to prepare. Get over it. If your food takes 40 mins, just imagine the food quality that's going into preparing it. Definitely top notch; highly recommend everyone try the paella. However, if you have Google translate or, speak pigeon Spanish, you'll be fine. This is the third generation of a family owned/operated business. Rather than being entitled, these folks work hard, for every diner. Reservations aren't easy to get and, some meals must be ordered a day ahead. I'd be willing to fly to Valencia just for this meal. Sangria is not your Mama's Sangria, must have it. The warm salad with cucumber ice cream is better than most first dates. I forgot to make a reservation so I sent them an email around 9am and was able to get a reservation for 1pm that same day. I ordered the paella de marisco which was enough for two people, but I finished the whole damn thing!!!! The half bottle of vino rioja paired beautifully with my lunchtime paella feast.
