    Seafood Paella

What a wonderful experience! The food was incredible and our server was very helpful in navigating the menu to find gluten free options for our starter, main course and dessert. They are incredibly accommodating for English speakers. The burrata salad was to die for, the cod was so buttery and smooth, and the seafood paella was perfectly done, best paella we've had so far! I definitely suggest making a reservation. The restaurant feels rather upscale, but prices and reasonable and they did not turn us away from dressing like Americans with our denim and tees. We ate here 3 times during our stay and had Andrea and Mr. Vila as our wonderful servers. Can't recommend this place enough!

Grilled sirloin (they don't ask you how you'd like it cooked, and by default it comes out rare)

I came here for dinner during the week after seeing the raving Google reviews. Unfortunately it did not live up to my expectations. I thought of trying the paella here, but since I was dining alone and their paella is for a minimum of 2 persons, that was not possible. Service was decently quick at 6:30pm and I was seated immediately as it was rather empty. I had a puréed peach drink, grilled scallops, and grilled sirloin, which came up to about €45. There's nothing much to say about the puréed peach drink since it was commercially packed. As for the grilled scallops, they were nicely seasoned and the katsuobushi added another texture to it, but they were of varying degrees of overcooked (one was a little shriveled too). It is easy to overcook seafood, and grilling scallops with its shell makes it a little more challenging too. As for the grilled sirloin, they didn't ask me how I'd like it cooked, and so I thought it would come out medium by default. I was very wrong. The sirloin steak came out pretty rare. It's a pretty mediocre steak, seasoned well, but chewy and doesn't cut through easily. The fries had a good crunch, but I'd rather they cut them consistently. The various thickness and length of the fries make it confusing to eat. Am I supposed to use my fingers to pick up the thicker fries and use my fork for the thinner fries? Make up your mind! Since the 2 dishes were lackluster, I decided to skip out on dessert. Sadly I won't be recommending this place.

I enjoyed the food here. However, they train their staff to interact in a way that feels full of forced smiles and very uncomfortably cold. I had the black cod and the sautéed artichoke leaves with squid. Unfortunately I was not able to try the paella as I was sola and they (strictly) refuse to prepare paella for one person. (It gets poor reviews here so perhaps it was for the best.) Small details like the crusty fresh bread, and tart, astringent olives were a lovely touch. Prices were reasonable considering the quality. If even one if the wait staff showed an authentic spec of sincere kindness I think I'd have felt more inclined to return.

When in Valencia, PAELLA. However, after an extensive Google, Yelp and Trip Advisor search I realized most restaurants close after lunch on Sundays. Without too many options to choose from, I found Puerta Del Mar was open on Sunday nights AND lots of good reviews. Scored a reservation for 800 and we were on our way. We were greeted by a very friendly, charming and funny young hostess whose name I missed and sat down right behind the fishing tank home to some poor lobsters awaiting their fate (I presume). Beatriz aka Bea was our server and she is really friendly and sweet! We started off dinner with the croquettes appetizer which brings 4 different kinds, among them, shrimp and pulpo, all of which were delicious and I think this was probably my favorite part of the meal. We also ordered the smoked artichoke and jamón serrano dish which was pretty good as well. Those were certainly the highlights of the meal. Now for the not so greats : the wine I ordered which I swear was only 1/4 full- I think I have the picture to price it. What gives? I mean she didn't have to fill it to the rim but a nice glass- half way at least is what I expected - and what is the norm. We ordered the paella with seafood, already peeled which is called something like señorito and I have to say it was just okay. I've been eating paella all my life so I was anxious to try paella in Valencia and I was not impressed. Rice was rather bland and so was fish , definitely low on salt and overall taste. I had to ask for olive oil as it wasn't offered... needless to say after so much anticipation, I was disappointed. Other cons : bread was brought and also charged without them telling us and the same goes for the water. I mean they should at least ask, bottled? Or tell you , there's a surcharge for the bread instead of just asking - want bread? And just bringing it. As a matter of principle these things should be told straight up, otherwise it comes off as petty and tacky. The ambiance was nice - singer was a nice touch to set the mood. Would I come back? No. Would I recommend? NOPE!

Paella was decent, nice atmosphere, but horrible service by one girl (with the wavy light brown hair). We came into the restaurant and was told by a very nice girl that they had a big party of 50 people coming and to come back in an hour, and they will have a table for us. We came back after an hour and was greated by a different girl. Asked for a table for two and she asked if we had reservations? I told her no, and she told us that they were booked for the night and all the tables were full. And that getting a table "is impossible." We looked around and there was maybe 3-4 tables full. We thought ok, maybe everyone has reservations. We walk out to the other entrance, where the original nice girl we talked to was on her break. We told her what the server told us and she took my number down and said she would personally make a reservation for us in an hour. Awesome customer service. We leave and come back an hour later to the server that told us it was impossible to book a table. I told her we had reservations now and she looked surprised and then sat us. She took our drink order and gave it to us promptly. We then waited 20 minutes after that and she never came back to take our order. So I got up to gesture to her that we were ready to order and she apologized and then turned towards the kitchen where she was talking to one of the cooks. She smirked and laughed with him right after she turned around. She did apologize when she finally came to our table to take our order. After received and finished our paella she never checked on us again. After waiting for 30 minutes after eating, I got up and went to the counter to pay. I could see she was just talking to one of the cooks around the counter, and saw I was waiting she came back to the front and apologized. Paella was decent, a little skimpy on the seafood. But the poor customer service by one overruled the experience. The nice server that helped us with the reservation deserves a raise, she definitely great for the business. The other girl will bring this business down. I will never come back to this place just because of her. Beware if she's your server.

Beautiful restaurant. Great food and vino!

My husband and I were referred to this restaurant by our hotel. This was a special trip and we wanted a special dinner. The waiter didn't check in with us but twice, then to give the check. The wine was a good recommendation. 45 minutes went by we visited and then we got our food, sadly, it was extremely dried out like it was over cooked or had been sitting around. I was really disappointed. The atmosphere was very romantic in the front and seemed more casual in the back. The prices didn't match the quality of food we received. However, I understand a cook may have had a bad night.

Service was really good, attentive. We ordered everything to share and we may have ordered a bit too much, but It was all very good. Wanted to try the croquetas since they were homemade. The were good. We ordered the lobster and cheese ones. Liked that the lobster one wasn't fishy. The patatas bravas had a homemade alioli that was really good but it was too much. I'd ask for that on the side next time, but I loved that the potatoes were crispy!! So big score there! The burrata was good, what you'd expect from a burrata. Nothing extraordinary, but we devoured it. The little steak toasts with foie gras were tasty, we ate them so fast we didn't have a chance to take a photo! They were really good with a little apple sauce on the side. The jamón cecina had a strange brownish color on some pieces. We didn't finish it. The mussels were interesting with coconut milk and curry. Wish we had asked for bread to dip in the sauce. The service was good. We got new plates when the pasta ragú came out. We ordered a Valencia wine, which we liked. We'd come again. Make reservations and expect the same outstanding service. Good find!

For our a pair teeth, we started with agua Valencia. Be careful, it's orange juice from Valencia oranges mixed with gin, vodka and cava. it doesn't taste very strong, but it has quite a kick. One piece was enough. For food we started with and shared papas bravas. Next were the lobster croquettes. Fabulous. The real show stopper was the zucchini carpaccio. No real way to describe it except exceptionally tasty. We lastly shared the duck confit. Fall off the bone delicious. Wonderful food, reasonably priced and epic service from Nicholas and Abril. This is certainly the place to try for a casual buy delicious meal.
