Nestled among the peaks of the Sawatch Range, where tumbleweeds might theoretically roll if they weren't caught in the spokes of a passing bicycle, sits an establishment of peculiar perfection: The Biker & The Baker. My compass has unerringly pointed to their door every single time I visit Salida over the past five years. It is a tradition forged in sugar and chain grease, where the rugged American West meets the precision of French pastry. Pairing high-desert riding with artisanal baking seems like a recipe for a pile-up, but the execution here is a sweet ride. You will find aerodynamic cyclists sitting elbow-to-elbow with flannel-draped modern prospectors, united by a singular quest for butter. The Biker handles the gears, the Baker handles the tiers. They aren't just coasting on charm; they are pedaling toward culinary triumph, baking up a storm that rivals the monsoons over the Arkansas River. The confections are miniature monuments to indulgence. I have routinely panned for gold in this valley, but the true motherlode is their lemon tart--a symmetrical marvel of citrus striking like a high-noon sun. Their charcuterie boards are arranged with the geometric exactitude of a surveyor mapping a railroad. Whether you are gearing up to summit Mount Shavano or recovering from a grueling promenade, this sanctuary provides the requisite fuel. It is the exceedingly charming destination itself.

We went in and the woman at the counter was very helpful and sweet, immediately pointing out the local products when we mentioned that's what we were interested in. There were wines from many Colorado wineries including Holy Cross Abbey, Garrett Cellars, Vino Salida, and Mountain Spirit. It's a pretty small store and the aisles are a bit narrow, but they did have a good selection and reasonable prices. I would definitely come back for more local wines if I'm in the area again.

Although you order at the counter like a fast food place they bring the food out to your table. There is plenty of seating. The restaurant is always clean and inviting. Salida is a small town compared to many places in Colorado. So the competition may not be as much as say if they were in Denver but if they were there they would still shine because they're just that good. The burgers are very tasty, the fries are great, a large fry will feed two people easily. The shakes are really good. Just like in the past they come out with a full glass plus the remainder of shake in the stainless mixing cup. It's well worth the stop if you're in town and hungry.

If I can walk away without my anxiety being triggered or my allergies triggered, we have found a gem to return to. Driving from Colorado Springs through Salida, Co to the Sand Dunes, we decided to stop for a later lunch. We stopped by The Boathouse and was rather loud along with no four top outside. The host referred us to Pizza Rio and said they had outdoor seating and it's usually quieter. Heading up the stairs, customers coming down said it's worth it. The host showed us the tables outside and indeed was very quiet and had a beautiful view of the river. When we sat down, the heaters were still on but the server turned them off for us and opened the shade screen. My husband got the Greek salad with a slice of pepperoni pizza. My son got the vodka penne pasta, my mom got the meatball grinder and I got the Greek salad with arugula and spinach and the spaghetti and meatballs. Everything on the menu said it was made in house including the dressings. And WOW!!!! The flavor these dishes had was top notch Italian and dishes were decent/big sized. Cost wasn't as high as we thought, and the server was extremely accommodating. I would recommend this place to anyone passing through. Great job to the cooks, amazing!!!
