She recently moved into a shared space with a bridal boutique, closed her other shop, and now has just a small section in the new location with a very limited selection compared to what she used to carry. I went in needing a pair of work shoes. I typically buy red shoes, and my preferred brand is Alegria, but since she didn't have any red ones, I settled for a plain black pair. Like any normal person, I kept my receipt and went to another shoe store to see if I could find red shoes instead. I found a pair I liked, so I decided to return the black ones to Annie's and buy the red ones elsewhere. I returned within the hour, receipt in hand. The owner threw a huge fit about how returns cost her money. She was visibly upset, almost shaking with frustration. I offered to cover the return fee she'd have to pay, which I believe was around $20, just to ease the tension. She refused, saying "no, it's OK," but remained visibly frustrated the entire time. She also made comments suggesting her ATM or card reader might not even work for the return, which added to the whole uncomfortable experience. I completely understand the costs of running a small business, and I genuinely felt for her -- I was willing to do anything to make it easier, especially since I'd been a loyal customer for years. But the way I was treated was so negative that it overshadowed everything. I got my refund and bought the shoes I wanted elsewhere, but the feeling I walked away with is what stays with me. I hope things improve, but I won't be returning.
