But, customer service is lacking. First most of my 3 hour appointment was talking about god and he all but said my gay father is a freak of nature. If I hadn't had half of my hair in foils I would have walked out. This is extremely unprofessional in my opinion. Never talk about religion or politics, especially with a first time client. Didn't want to piss off the guy who was doing my hair. But, my hair looked so good I booked with him again and figured I'd tell him no god talk this time, My second appointment was to get my hair touched up for my daughter's wedding. I was pressed for time especially with guests coming in from out of town. I waited 15 minutes for Gregg. He never showed! When I was leaving the woman who was there asked me if I wanted to call Gregg. I said I thought you had done that. And she said she had talked with Gregg that morning and he would be in for his first appointment, which was me at 1:00. Wouldn't you think that when she saw he was five minutes late she would call him? And then no reaching out to me to apologize or trying to fit me in before the wedding. Radio silence. I won't be going back.

Greg wants you to walk out of his salon looking so good that people comment on it. :-). And don't we all want that! :-) He made a huge improvement in my style and color. I think he is a master colorist and I know he has won awards as a stylist. He meets people where they are at and really connects in a positive way. And I appreciate that. But mainly, I am so happy to have a hair style and color that are so much better and more fun than what I had for years at Juut.

That said, Salon 71 is a medium-sized upscale "chair rental" hair and nail salon just above Bruegger's of France Ave in Edina. It has more of a "no nonsense" feel of it than many other salons of similar quality. I think this is probably because it is a chair rental place and the hairstylists would rather pocket their cash than invest a bunch of money into making clients feel pampered with candles and mood lighting. The interior is several shades of beige and somewhat drab, but it has great windows over looking France Ave, is very conveniently located, and has a great magazine selection. Personally, I go to salons for the haircut and not to pay for the overhead, so I like that it isn't super fancy. I also LOVE that they don't push product on you, as many hair stylists at the larger salons (like Juut) must meet minimum sales for product (lame). I can't comment on the other hairdressers, but I like mine, who I followed to Salon 71 several years ago after she quit her gig in Uptown. Services there include hair, nails, and wigs. No, they don't accept CC so dust off your checkbook...you gotta use that bad boy for something, right!?

Ever other sentence I was put on hold and finally made a reservation after 10 mins. Prices online looked good and after I estimated my costs I figured I would actually be saving money as they are a bit cheaper than other places in town. When I made the reservation they said that they do not accept credit cards. Ok - no big deal it saves lots of $$ in fees. When I arrived it was really empty and not very "Salon" like. Drab colors, nice windows of France Ave & Lunds parking lot but didn't feel very welcoming. (Maybe I"m just spoiled from Juut and other places I"ve been.) They do serve water and coffee but in Styrofoam cups. (I'm against Styrofoam when there are plenty of other cups/glasswares that are much safer for the environment.) My stylist (Jordan) was very nice and did a great job with my color & cut. When I was done my cost went up because "she had to do so much work back to back & needed more dye". (Side note- It was a trim of 1 inch and a full highlight. Which is what I booked for!!! Plus she never ran out of dye in the first place.) So I go to write a my check to pay and the check was made out to my stylist who's real name is Heidi?!? not Jordan. I left happy but with a bigger dent in my wallet than I had planned on. I didn't know that some stylists dilute the color before applying it so they can save money on product, and I also thought that having my rinse water turn dark brown after the first few shampoos was normal too. It's not. It depends on the product your technician uses, and Allen uses the absolute best! My coloring process is so comfortable and I have zero runoff because the color stays on my hair instead of going down the drain. I visit Allen about every six weeks (or until I can't stand my gray roots anymore), and if my hair didn't grow, I could go much longer between salon visits. Allen also cuts my waist length hair once a year. He will do exactly what you say, meaning if you ask for a one inch trim, you won't end up with a six inch chop! Allen is meticulous in his work and never rushes. He is a perfectionist in the best way. Just like his coloring products, Allen only uses top of the line shears. Yes, that makes a big difference too. My hair looks great with no split ends and no dryness. Phenomenal! Allen's prices are probably in line with other salons except his service is so much better. I don't really know what other salons charge because I won't let anyone else touch my hair. If I could bubble wrap this guy to keep him safe, I would. I don't know what I would do without him. The bottom line is that if you want a gold standard, top notch master stylist, Allen is your huckleberry. Schedule early if you want a specific day because he is always booked. Sydney is super friendly. She had good ideas for my hair. The online booking is a pain, so I called and left a message and an appointment was scheduled with Sydney over the phone. When you accrue points based on purchases you get discounts. I'm close to 1000 points and a 50% discount that can even be used on product. Zach cut my son's hair a year ago for senior photos and did a great job. Zach is super hard to get scheduled with. They moved to a closer location by Petsmart at 14256 Plymouth Ave in Burnsville. They added more space, nail tech and spa services. The bayalage will be low maintenance compared to foils. Added some contrast to silver hair.

Ladies, you might run the risk of getting mauled (in a good way, of course) from your significant other after a visit. I have never seen anyone walking out looking worse than when they walked in. He even is skilled enough to turn a fellow into a passable Santa! You really owe it to yourself to experience the offerings at this hair cuttery. Mrs Carnivore has just informed me that it is actually called a salon-spa. Zach has just moved in to his new location, and a range of spa services are available, with more coming in the future. The Carnivore is not likely to sit down for a pedicure that doesn't involve immersing his feet in a piranha pond, but never say never. Besides, those fish need to file their teeth down on something every now and again. The Carnivore has also recently been made aware that not all people care for their fingernails with a belt sander, and though this sounds strange, a more traditional method of nail-prettying is done here. Zach also employs someone called an "Aesthetician" which the Carnivore understands to be a person skilled and schooled in making people look better through skin and body hair care. Massage may be offered here in the future. Back to Zach. He is not pretentious, has a delightful sense of humor, and can talk to you as much as you would like about almost anything you can think of. He is quite witty, smart, and well informed. I think next time I am in, we might talk about various techniques for field dressing and skinning a Buick. As I mentioned before, he also does hair-altering for women. Honestly, the Carnivore believes that is primarily what he does and he just tolerates him every so often. Mrs. Carnivore has benefited from Zach's hair styling knowledge and experience for years now, and the Carnivore is quite taken with his work. Scheduling has never been a problem, and in the unlikely event of an unforeseen issue, rescheduling has never presented an issue. The Carnivore gets his hair cut here, and you should too! (Though Mrs. Carnivore would probably be a better endorsement--she patronizes ZRH as well)

Then again yesterday I had my extensions removed after a year and a half just to take a break and got a trim. Both times amazing with Trae, I wish I could remember the name of the young woman that did my grand daughter's sadly I don't. I can say this my grand daughter walked out feeling like a princess for the next two days flipping her hair around. I wish I had taken pictures, but sadly I did not.

I scheduled with Hasaan. Showed him two videos and a photo, he only asked me "you want to keep it full in the back?" I said yes, because it's like that in the photos. I felt like he barely looked but I didn't question because sometimes people are just that good, they already know what's up by a glance. He asked me if I liked the perm, I talk about how I grew my hair out for a year and how I didn't want to keep getting fades because it was too much maintenance to go every 1-2 weeks. Other than that he doesn't talk to me which is fine because I only really want to be communicated with about my hair and haircut. Basically no consultation about my hair and goals, especially as a new client. He busted out the clippers and before I could protest all my hair is gone. He asks if the length is good afterwards, all I can say is yes? What am I supposed to say, hey can you glue my hair back on my head? I obviously didn't want it any shorter. Look, I don't tell people what to do in their own profession as I am not a hairstylist but it really should've just been some scissor work. Even with the longest guard it would've still been shorter than what I had asked for. I was just asking for layers and a trim - if that was not communicated through the photo and videos I shared then why wasn't I asked. The back isn't even "full" like he confirmed with me, it seems like he just wanted me in and out and gave me a generic short haircut I didn't ask for. It's uneven, I have long stray hairs. My hair is sticking out because he cut it short, which I didn't ask for, and when it's short it sticks out. I know my hair, that's why I didn't want it. Paid $45 for the haircut (plus tip because I'm not a jerk and I know people need to live). Could've gotten this haircut somewhere else for less. I was and still am irritated as hell because I just don't understand how it went from what I wanted to what I got. He didn't even try. And I effectively lost time spent growing my hair out and money I spent on the perm that he just cut off. This was by hair the most messed up haircut.

She was accommodating since we were visiting Minneapolis for a week and I really wanted my hair done. The ombré hair took somewhere between 5-6 hours and went to my butt because she was feeding it in to keep a consistent shape. The black hair took about 4 hours. Both styles are knotless. If I lived in Minnesota I would definitely keep going!

There is always parking on the street and I have never had problems with safety in the neighborhood. I have really enjoyed always getting my hair done by Hayat and continue to highly recommend her to all my family and friends who have also agreed with my observations.
