I ate here twice in January when most local restaurants were closed already for the winter. I was happy that this place was still serving. I ordered a few cocktails here and the drinks were good. After you order, they will bring snacks to the table like peanuts, pistachios and pub mix. Both visits I sat in the outdoor area which is covered with clear plastic sheeting. They allow people to smoke in there, which I didn't like, but I also realized that I wasn't back home in California. I was impressed with the size of the menu as they had quite a few offerings beyond pizza and pasta with a meats selection and seafood as well. I ordered pizza with ham, spicy salami and basil on the first night and the second day I had carbonera pasta. I ordered the chicory vegetable side both times. My wife ordered with muscles with pasta on the first night and lasagna on the second day and she liked both. For those that are from the US and you had not been to Europe before, service is slower. It felt like all of Italy was here, Easter Sunday evening, enjoying the stunning weather and landscape that is Sorrento. We stopped here for a nightcap which morphed into a cheese-meat platter that was bonkers. Moscow Mule here, a Sorrento Sunset (spiked coffee) there, and now everyone was greedily picking at the massive wooden block topped with cured meats, jelly, focaccia, nuts, a handful of (stellar) Italian cheeses, as well as a bit of fresh mixed salad for good measure. Stuffed (this was after dinner and gelato earlier in the night, after all) we paid and about to scoot when the waiter brought out four complimentary shots of limoncello (the official 'mascot' of this region, for sure!) and the laws and customs and mores being different here than back in America I'll just keep mum about my 15-year-olds reaction to their very first official "saluti!". read more

When we walked past this restaurant I was excited to try it! Should've checked the reviews first. A few things on the menu looked amazing. We ordered a couple glasses of wine, caprese bruschetta, and our five different mains. The wine was adequate. The bruschetta was basically raw, just bread with diced tomatoes and a big chunk of mozzarella. The bread and oil they brought was delicious, but hard to go wrong with that. For my main I ordered a grilled sirloin steak with grilled vegetables. It was a HUGE steak, and it was very pink, which I like, though they did not ask me how I wanted it cooked (don't know if people do that in Italy, though). Somehow it was still incredibly chewy. Parts of it were straight up raw, and I couldn't find any part of it that was perfect. It was unseasoned as far as I could taste, which was a let down. The "grilled vegetables" was incredibly wilted spinach that I didn't even touch. My partner ordered ravioli as a main, and it literally came with four ravioli. FOUR. They were good, but it was like 1/4 of the amount of food that I got. My father-in-law ordered the mushroom risotto, but it was under done and far too crunchy. He only ate maybe a 1/5 of the very large plate in front of him. The other two members of our family got pasta dishes, and they were good, but not amazing and also very small portions. As for the bathroom, the toilet paper was through a small slit and completely inaccessible. The service was fine, but the inside of the restaurant was incredibly loud, both people and music. I was hoping to avoid the cigarette smoke inside but one of the workers was just sitting behind the cash register smoking. Not an enjoyable experience. read more

I happened upon this restaurant as I was wandering in the early afternoon when business was slow. The owner saw that I was photographing everywhere, so she invited me to photograph part of her restaurant. She was very gracious and even found a pedestal for my camera! The cheese plate was excellent with many different cheeses and so artfully prepared. I sent the Pizza back and was served the same Pizza even colder than when I sent it back the first time...I took one bite and asked them to just take it back as I realized the Sausage was chewy and raw. Mixed feelings really. For our first meal in Sorrento it was definitely disappointing. The spaghetti carbonara was dry with hardly any ham, it was also covered with black pepper which I personally hate. The mixed greens was very fresh, crisp veggies and a nice variety with corn and fennel. The minestrone lacked in flavor and wasn't that hearty full stew I was expecting. My husband got fried chicken and fries which satisfied him and my 5 yo daughter. Great atmosphere with indoor and outdoor seating. A little loud but you could still carry on with conversation. Syrenuse is located right on the Piazza Tasso, probably the best location in town! It's right next to the stairs leading down to the Sorrento Port. I sat outside and enjoyed my breakfast, with no sense of ever been hurried along by the servers. It's the Italian way to not intrude on you, therefore they come to the table as little as possible so as not to disturb your enjoyment. But my server wasn't hard to flag down. Evidently Europeans don't guzzle down coffee like we do. For one thing, who can afford it? There are no free refills and at € 3.50 each - that price was pretty standard, actually- you'd go broke if you lived here. But it is a lovely place to people-watch and use the free wifi. read more

We only had a couple of quick drinks here as it is on the main square in Sorrento, Piazza Tasso, and that made it a good meeting point. A vodka and coke and a coke cost about EUR13 and this is probably only slightly more than the typical cost of drinks in Sorrento. Service is very good initially but if you want anything after your first order then you'll have to be prepared for a really long wait. We caught the attention of one waiter and asked for the bill and he was visibly and audibly irritated by the fact that by the time he got around to us 15 minutes later we had already asked (and received) the bill from another waiter. This put us off ordering anything more than one or two drinks so I can't comment on the food here, I'm afraid. If you are visiting Sorrento, this is definitely a good place to stop by! My family and I just happened upon it during our visit there on a European vacation. The wait staff was incredibly friendly, and very attentive to our needs. The food was very good as well! There is no better place to get a Caprese salad than in Italia! I also had a Margherita pizza there, which was good. Most of the restaurant is located outside in the shade. It provides a great view of the area. They also had music videos playing in the background with music that was popular from Italy as well as the United States. My family and I definitely enjoyed our visit here, it was a great place to sit back and take a rest on a long tour of Sorrento and get some amazing food while we were at it! read more

It's a fairly short walk from the train station. The staff is friendly and speak english! We had the pizza the prosciutto pizza and spaghetti with tomatoes & basil. So fresh, light, and delicious. Topped it off with a glass of white on a sunny day and you are in heaven! Bonus - they start you off with these fried cheese balls of goodness! Probably a million calories but I have no regrets! We chose this restaurant due to its wonderful location in the main square and right down the alley from our hotel. They were very excited to greet us and seat us. That's where the excitement and attention stopped. It was difficult to find whom to order from. We also sat for almost an hour before we were served anything outside of bread. Finally my brother received his mozzarella and prosciutto, which had a semi sour taste. My mother's salad and my lasagna was nowhere to be seen. 15-20 minutes after the one appetizer we were served my mother's pizza and my veal and someone's risotto, my brother ordered spaghetti. The pizza was very good. So I'll give the credit there. My veal was very tough and I did not want French fries so I was served dry and bland vegetables. Finally we asked for the check. And we found that we had been charged for everything, even the risotto, which means our order was taken wrong. We informed the waiter and he fixed the check. Then after waiting for another long amount of time to pay with my credit card I placed the cash on the table and walked out. read more

I learned from this restaurant and one other in the area, if there are employees aggressively trying to draw customers into their establishment, stay away. The location is excellent for people watching in the town center. Servers here try to upsell everything. We came to have drinks and appetizers, and no matter which items we ordered, the servers recommended a more expensive item. I decided to splurge on a much more expensive bottle of wine than what I initially asked for, based on the recommendation of the server. My fault for not sticking to my original choice, but I assume that when a server gives a recommendation, they are recommending a better product that costs more. This wine cost more but was mediocre in taste. Service was also terrible after they got our initial order. I know that service in Italy is not as prompt as the United States but this was far worse than any other restaurant I visited on my trip. We went on a Friday night and a lot of people who appeared to be locals began to fill the restaurant. Very small town feel and a lot of the customers seemed to know each other and the staff. As the make up of the crowd became less tourists and more locals, it became impossible to get service. Servers would stand and talk with their friends for ridiculously long periods of time and ignore attempts to get their attention. It took about 45 minutes to receive my bill after I asked for it, on top of the time it took to get servers attention to even ask for it. Bill was around 47 euros. I gave the server 50 and he just walked off with the change which is also not a custom in Italy. Waited about 5-10 minutes to see if maybe he just needed to go to the register to get change. I decided 3 euros wasn't worth another hour of my time. We'd been there since around 8 PM and it was past midnight when we left. The majority of that time was spent waiting for service. read more

This place is not authentic, definitely an American/British tourist trap. We unfortunately gave this place a try when a waitress gave us menus out front and we were really hungry at the tie- mistake number one (hint- it's not authentic when the waitstaff are trying to lure passersby in). Once in and seated on the patio, the waitress was "hamming it up" for the guests which was sort of fine, but it was somewhat annoying, and she kept looming at the table. We asked if they had a house white wine from the waiter, and he nodded yes. They then brought out the local town wine- wtf. My wife speaks Italian and the waitstaff would either 1) not answer our questions directly or 2) be dismissive and not answer us at all. For example, I asked and pointed for a sparkling mineral water and he answered back "flat water?" This isn't that hard. We looked at the food menu and because everything was in English and the menus looked old and dated (which is true- they have the same printed menus from 2013, see other posts in yelp), we passed on eating food there which made the waiter agitated. Passing on food here was our first great decision here. We sat outside and pigeons flew in everywhere- the pigeons ate the free snacks (peanuts and stale chex mix) while diners were at the table. If you want a great authentic Italian place, go to a place on a side street where they're not begging for customers. If you do want to go here, I'd recommend just getting one drink and leave, unless you enjoy the passive aggressive waitstaff "hamming it up" to lure in tourists then getting angry when you don't order food. read more

Looking for breakfast in Italy before 1030am is almost impossible, if you are looking for a protein based meal, I.e., eggs. This place has great inclusive meal, coffee, juice, croissant, eggs (2), bacon and toast for 10E, no coperto, so remember to tip your waiter. Maximo was our waiter and he was a nice, funny man. This place is very commercial like and and right on the square. This means you have many people stopping in to eat and the waiters are busy. They seem a little understaffed and the service is way below par at least for American standards. So be prepared to flag down your server. The food was very tasty and the fresh fish was great. The pasta also has great flavor. Because it is on the square be ready to spend a little more on your meal, possibly 5-8€ more than other restaurants off piazza Tasso. read more

We went to dinner with friends and asked for separate checks. All good. Their dinner arrived and they were finished before ours arrived (after asking twice where our meal was). When it arrived, they brought me the wrong meal. Back to the kitchen for a correct meal. My wife ate alone while I waited. My meal arrived after she finished. We had planned to go shopping just off the city square but it was late and we sent our friends ahead so they could at least shop. We remained at the table awaiting their return as I finished my meal and our drinks. My wife's hamburger was good but my chicken was not completely cooked. Obviously rushed after two mistakes. This wasn't a complicated order, just poorly handled. The manager made no adjustment to the bill for their mistakes. My recommendation is have a beer, enjoy the scenery and go to a real restaurant for dinner. read more

We just stopped in this place for dinner while walking by without looking into it at all and it was a huge mistake. 2 people in our group got the penne with salmon and it tasted so bad. It was super fishy and just did not taste right. When we asked our waiter about it and asked to see a menu to order different food he walked away only to return 10 minutes later saying he was getting the manager which we did not even ask for. We simply wanted to order a different dish. When the manager came over he was incredibly rude, blaming us as if we were in the wrong for his shitty food. After the altercation with the manager we decided we didn't even want to stay at the restaurant any longer so we paid and left. I'm not sure why this restaurant has so many bad reviews, maybe the competition or we were just lucky to have such a good experience? My husband and I went there, while on our honeymoon. We sat outside along the side of the restaurant. I hate being around smoke and everyone in the front was smoking (unfortunately a common thing in Italy) so the waiter was so kind as to seat us on the side away from anyone smoking. Our view was amazing, the waiter (Fabrizio) was the best and so accommodating for everything and our food was great! I've traveled in Italy for a total of 2 months now and this was the best experience I've had. I don't yelp much, but I had to on this one; I was compelled. The service was great for Italy, which is different than most places! So the other reviews about having to flag down the server can be ignored; flagging the server is what you do in Italy. The presentation of the bread, appetizer, meals and desert were amazing. It was just fun to get served our meals. There is a balcony with a view down 70ft to a plaza below which was such a great experience. It made eating an adventure... It was a little freaky. The host was very inviting, the wine was great and all of this came at such a great price. I will probably only eat here while in Sorrento! read more

My husband and I spent 3 nights in Sorrento after spending some time exploring all of Italy had to offer. We enjoyed all of the food we ate throughout the country, but Syrenuse had some of the best food of the whole trip. The bolongese is to die for, the wine is amazing, and the views are spectacular. We went back there every night for dinner! Also, (my fellow Americans), quit complaining about service. You are in ITALY, not America-- they do things a little differently when it comes to dining, which is totally and completely fine. I personally like the fact that the waiters don't come to your table every five minutes and interrupt your conversation like they do here in the US.
