Tucked away off the Main Street, across a sidewalk and down a small alley lies a true traditional Italian restaurant called Tavern Allegra. This is what they mean when they say "hidden gem" lol. But please use your yelp map, google map or whatever you have to find this place. Wonderful old school Italian atmosphere with a family-run business and live music entertainment performing all the old Italian classics. Delicious authentic food and friendly staff. This is what true Italian food and culture is about. Guiseppe and his wife were wonderful and engaging. A delightful addition to a fabulous meal. On the owners recommendation I tried the Ravioli di mare - A homemade ravioli stuffed with clams and seabass in a cherry tomato sauce. It was magnifico! I'm so glad I took his recommendation. We came in excited to enjoy a nice evening, but unfortunately, we were made to feel extremely uncomfortable and out of place. We were told that we were being too loud after an American couple of four walked in. As Italians, we are naturally expressive, we talk with our hands, and we enjoy lively conversation. There is a difference between being disrespectful and simply being excited and enjoying ourselves. What made the experience even more upsetting was watching the other couple receive a complimentary bottle of wine and then proceed to put it right in front of us. We were looking for a place with some Italian music. We stopped by there around 6 o'clock. They decided to come back and there was live music. They took our name for a reservation. They were very nice.. We went elsewhere and had a drink while we were waiting. They were very nice. I'm 100% tired. They seem interested in having us there very fun. We talked about Italian music.. When we went back, they recognized our last name and brought us straight to a table, but it was in the very back room against the wall, which was OK if we were gonna get service. A server came and asked us if we wanted still water. We said no thank you we would just like to order a drink. He left us menus 25 minutes later never came back.. We heard music in the other room we saw servers going to tables all around us delivering food and actually serving people. We finally got up and left and on the way out till three or four people that nobody ever served us and we were leaving. They smiled at us waved and did not care.. We have been traveling for 35 days all around Europe from Venice to Lake Como to Rome to Capri Lake Como. Everything was awesome everywhere we went.. We love our hotel beautiful hotel over the water private beach amazing. We actually went to the Irish pub and had the most amazing service wonderful people. I will have to tell you this was the absolute worst service and restaurant I have been to ever. My husband and I are very simple, easy and nice people and I've never been treated the way we were treated at this restaurant. Again, I am 100% Italian pretty easy to get along with and was just looking for that very authentic Italian restaurant with good people. Actually, the worst experience I've ever had . Maybe if you're local and live there you're treated well otherwise they don't seem to care . if I could read it a zero star I would but you at least have to pick a one star unfortunately. My parents from Naples and Sicily and all my grandparents from Europe would be very disappointed to hear what's happened in Sorrento. There seems to be a lot of talk on how well they treat people and it's also not true. I would rather go away McDonald's if there was one there we would be treated so much better. We walked in around 6:20 PM and placed our food order by 6:30 PM. Our appetizers didn't come out until 7:46 PM -- yes, over an hour later. We were there with our kids, and by that point they were absolutely starving. When a table has children, I really feel there should be some effort to get at least the kids' food out as soon as possible, especially when the wait is that long. Was looking forward to this dinner because of all the good reviews but I'm not quite sure as I felt the food missed the mark and didn't compare to some of the other Italian food I had this trip. I made a reservation on Google but when I showed up, they didn't have our reservation, apparently they rejected the reservation which is crazy because I'm so used to just making the reservation online and it's automatically confirmed whereas this place indeed sent me a rejection email earlier in the day saying they couldn't confirm the reservation - not something I've ever experienced before since I always just assumed when you make the reservation on Google, it's already confirmed automatically but I will definitely pay closer attention to my emails in the future. Luckily they were able to fit us in but said we had to be done eating in an hour which was fine with me as we weren't trying to have a long dinner. I got the mixed seafood grill and most of it was dry and slightly overcooked, not much flavor. The grilled vegetables were just the cold appetizer grilled vegetables. The homemade pasta with sausage was alright but not amazing. The ambiance was a nice family restaurant with live music. Kind of tucked away down a side street in Sorrento, but close to our hotel. Our waiter was really friendly and funny, that's the only reason I'm giving this four stars as the overall meal was probably closer to 3 or 3.5. read more

TavernAllegra is tucked down a cute little alley and is an adorable restaurant with tables on the path, as well as an indoor dining area. We made a reservation after trying to wait for a table the night before and it was packed. Service was great, we were seated outside and brought fresh bread. The tagliatelle alla Bolognese was so delicious, as was the Linguine all'Astice. I had a lot of lobster pasta in Italy, and this was one of my top fave dishes. I didn't love my fried seafood mix, it was just too much and wasn't super flavorful, but I experienced that throughout Italy, not just here. My fiancée loved his segundi of the beef filet with green pepper sauce. I would absolutely recommend this place for lunch or dinner, it's perfect for a stroll to and from your meal and the ambiance is unbeatable in that little alley. read more

The owner does a lot of table touches and takes your order, so he can answer questions and make recommendations, if asked. The rest of the staff helps with serving and clearing tables. I ordered the Sorrento Kindness cocktail, which is limoncello and prosecco. It was a nice balance of sweet and tart. My first course was swordfish parmigiana with eggplant, which was mostly eggplant, but I enjoyed it very much! I ordered the Sciatiatelli ai frutti di mare as my entree. It's short cut, flat pasta with mussels, octopus, calamari, and clams, and pieces of fish. It was amazing! We expressed we did not ask for it many times- we don't even like seafood ravioli. It came and we just moved it around the plate, thought it was a complimentary add on since we just got engaged. We stopped in after lunch for a drink, and absolutely loved it. They said they have a large dinner crowd but lunch is light, and we were one of the only groups around. We sat outside in a narrow alley that was exactly as you would picture Italy to be...narrow streets with bricked walls and clothes lines along the balconies. The staff was engaging and courteous, and they made sure we were come and gave great food recommendations. The wine we had (picture added) was pretty good. It was 38 euros, and was a light red. It was almost to the point of having carbonation, but wasn't so to the point it was distracting. We had an appetizer of Bruschetta, but I have to say this isn't an American bruschetta. This had a cheese base with shaved eggplant and fresh cherry tomatoes. It was the best bruschetta I've ever had. We then had dessert which was something we hadn't planned to get...so glad we did. The best we had was the pear and ricotta cheesecake tart. We also had the lemon tort, which was great, but the pear ricotta was the best. This was a great find as we walked down narrow Via Santa Maria on a rainy Saturday. Pranzo was excellent. We were welcomed warmly and given a very nice table for four plus a high chair. We started with Affettata di Salumi (assorted salami) for the table. Our main dishes were all excellent pasta dishes. The spaghetti with tuna sauce was outstanding, as was the oenne with eggplant and tomato sauce. The lemon cake was out of this world. We liked TavernAllegra so much that we returned a couple of days later for cena (dinner) which was also excellent. The cena menu is different and slightly more expensive than that for pranzo. We enjoyed grilled shrimp, fried calimari, sautéed sea bass, abd a misto di pesce (mixed grilled seafood), in addition to more wonderful pasta dishes. The risotto with gorgonzola, chicory and pistachios was out of this world. There is also live music at cena, which helps set the mood for a great evening. The wine list is nice, and we went both times for the primotivo (excellent choice for the foods we selected). Everyone at TavernAllegra was cheerful and welcoming. If you eat in only one restaurant in Sorrento, then make it TavernAllegra! read more
