I visited this restaurant for lunch as part of a shore excursion while in Naples/Amalfi Coast. The tour had reserved the restaurant as part of our break in the excursion and the service and food were spot on. Despite the restaurant being packed from cruise goers, like myself, the staff made the delivery and service of our meal flawless. We had a cheese gnocchi, which was sinful, and lemon chicken and potatoes. All of the food was amazing. While the food was fine, the server was as shady as they come and made an obvious switch of a bill to overcharge by 80+ euro. He quickly took the itemized bill so we could not see it and ran the credit card. The bill seemed high when we asked for an itemized bill he went and reprinted it and gave us 80 euro back saying there was a mix up with another table. So obvious he is running a scheme on patrons. Side note: It was our daughter's birthday. As he brings up plate signing he puts it down and says "whatever" and walks away. The best pizza I've ever had in my entire life was from here. And I've eaten a lot of pizzas in my life. Their pizza was simple, not too many toppings. But then again, we did ask the driver not to send us to a touristy restaurant. Once we sat down, the server brought us water and fresh bread. Perhaps we were really hungry but the fresh bread was amazing. Clearing up 2 plates of bread, I was afraid once the pizza came out I wouldn't have the appetite to finish it. After one bite, I knew that wasn't a problem. The combination of their sausage, mushrooms, cheese and fresh basil worked so well together. The crust was perfectly charred (see photo) but not at all hard. After the meal, I noticed everyone cleaned their plates. We were all treated very well by the staff as they tried to accomodate us in broken English. If I ever go back to Sorrento, this will definitely on my list. I don't enjoy giving a poor review, but I truly feel that our experience at La Basilica was a total disappointment. We came here for dinner the second night of our vacation in Sorrento based on our hotel concierge's recommendation. First, we were seated inside at a corner table between the ledge where they keep their glasses/dishes, etc. and another small table. Additionally, this table seemed to be a dead zone for air circulation, so we asked to move tables. Upon being moved to a new table, we were not greeted nor acknowledged by a server. After patiently waiting for a server to greet us, we had to flag someone down as we desperately needed to order water due to the extreme heat. We finally ordered water and wine from a server and continued to wait patiently for their arrival. Again, at least 20 minutes went by before a server came to take our dinner orders. Might I add that this restaurant wasn't cheap, so this level of complete inattention from the servers was really disappointing, especially when we saw multiple servers catering to a larger party seated at the table right across from us. I got the minestrone soup to start followed by the crab stuffed ravioli. My husband got the lemon pasta with clams and shrimp. My soup came out about 20 minutes later and then our dishes came out another 30 minutes after that! We weren't in a rush but we also weren't asked if we wanted anything else to drink during this time, so we just had a lot of empty sitting time in this restaurant. The minestrone soup was fine. Not my favorite, as I like my soups to be more broth-based but it was a bowl with some broth loaded with veggies, it was okay. Flavor was nothing memorable. Then, my crab stuffed ravioli looked nothing like the post someone else shared of theirs. I had 4 average sized raviolis stuffed with crab. There was supposed to be a zucchini sauce on it and it was almost bare. It was the blandest dish I've honestly probably eaten. While it wasn't bad, it had no flavor and was not enough food for a meal. My husband got some sort of lemon pasta that was supposed to come with clams and shrimp. It came with a handful of clams and literally 1 shrimp. After spending what felt like hours in this restaurant we were still hungry upon leaving. The taste of our meals left a lot to be desired as well. I have come to understand that service is different in Italy, but being ignored is still being ignored no matter where you are. Don't waste a night (and almost $100) of your vacation here for dinner. read more

The sister restaurant of the Michelin restaurant next door, La Basilica is bigger and cheaper. They have a ton of tables, a GINORMOUS menu, and the prices are not too bad. We ordered prosciutto with mozzarella (came with the most delicious flatbread), salmon, broccoli rabe, broccoli, and the sea/mountain salad. The food was all pretty good but not exceptional. 5 days eating out in Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast, this is by far the best in terms of taste and quality of food. You got to try the sea bass Sicilian style cooked with tomatos. The ravioli stuffed with crab is nice as testified by my wife! Our appetizer of muscles was the best in the 5 days in this area. We ate here two times during our honeymoon in Sorrento & the Amalfi Coast. The food was incredibly fresh and delicious, and they had excellent service. We literally cleaned our plates both times we dined there! Dessert was just as good as dinner (I highly recommend the creams brûlée). On our last night in Sorrento we made the mistake of eating in one of the flashy restaurants in the main plaza where everyone was hanging out... the food was mediocre and nothing compared to Basilica (which is off the beaten path down a side street). Worst experience we've had during our stay in Sorrento. After a day on the Mediterranean ocean we wanted a place close to our Airbnb. Our friends client in Chicago recommended El Basilica. We were immediately seated and then waited 20 minutes for someone to take our drink order. My husband and I ordered a half bottle of prosecco that was warm and we did not receive an ice bucket. I've had pasta several times a day throughout my stay and La Basilica was my favorite. I had ravioli filled with fresh ricotta in a sage a butter sauce. It was creamy and lucious without being too heavy. I also tasted the spaghetti and meatballs which were incredible. Definitely a great place to try this classic. I was with a big group. The waiter customized an antipasto sampler for the table which included fried stuffed zucchini flowers, stuffed calamari, tomato salad and severest types of fresh mozzarella. One dish was better than the next! The only thing you should be careful of is the water. I'm pretty sure the "bottled" water they put on the table had been filled up in the sink. Make sure you actually see the sealed bottle, especially if your stomach is sensitive. read more

They don't deserve their Michelin star. Maybe it's because it was a Monday night. Maybe it's because one guy was serving the whole outside. But it took 45 minutes before they took our order (we were trying to be on Italy time) and 20 minutes to get the bill after asking for it. When the wine came, it was a younger vintage than the one advertised (and no price break). Then the swordfish was overcooked and bland. Let me preface this review, I've had bad service in my life before but was never compelled to write a review. I have always thought maybe that person was having a bad day so I would forget about it but after what I experienced tonight... I will make an exception. If I could select zero stars, I would. I found this restaurant on yelp because it had a great rating. I showed up in the early evening when it was empty on my own and had a pleasant dinner on the patio. After LESS than one hour, I finished my dinner and the waiter gave me my bill before I asked for one. I paid the bill while I was reading up on an article. A minute later, the waiter told me he needed my table while the restaurant was 90% empty (inside was completely empty). I asked him if he could use another table and he ignored me while 2 guests stood by uncomfortably watching the event unfold. I packed up and walked to the owner to quietly speak about the situation. He patted my shoulder and seemed indifferent about my comments. Are they discriminating me cause I'm a solo female traveller? Or a visible minority? Thank you La Basilica FOR THE WORST MEAL I HAVE HAD IN MY LIFE. The people of Sorrento have been lovely to me but there are many other places to try besides this one. You can try Guarracino, Da Emilia, Da Gigino and Ristorante O'Parrucchiano La Favorita and many more. We came because of the great reviews , the mussels we ordered , half were not open, we live in the USA , Maryland and eat mussels all of the time . This review is for two different dine ins. For the first dine in, we shared the seafood pappardelle (15 euro), 4 stagioni pizza (8 euro) and marguerite pizza (7 euro). We thought this was the best tasting meal we had on our 9 day honeymoon trip throughout Italy. The pizza was probably the best pizza we've had in Italy with a slightly thicker crust than the ones we had in Rome and tasted fresh. For this experience, we give it 5/5 stars. It was so good, we returned for lunch the following day. But the return experience was the opposite. The crab ravioli with zucchini sauce was so salty I only ate two out of the 4 pieces for 15 euro. The seafood pappardelle was also saltier than the day before and the portion was a but smaller than our prior dining experience. Thus we give it 3/5 stars for an average of 4/5 stars.
