Carolyn did an awesome job cutting my hair and then styling it for an event. I have very thick hair which can be difficult to manage. Carolyn was able to style it with no problem at all! I met Carolyn as a fellow vendor at a wedding a while back - our client hired her for Hair-only, and hired me for Makeup-only. Immediately I felt her positive energy and her confidence at styling hair. From the get-go, I knew that Carolyn is a superb professional from her consultation. Both she and I were meeting the bridal party members for the first time, and if you are in our industry, you know that sometimes there may be a few wrinkles because the wedding day is such a stressful day. Carolyn handled that tense situation with grace, and I knew that I can always count on her - which is why we've worked together on numerous weddings together since our initial fortuitous encounter! Most recently with our client in Monterey, Carolyn had a vision to change the bride's hair color during our trial session, and also suggested the bride to come see me for a waxing service before her big day, and when I opened the door, I gaped at how beautiful her hair color was and how it made her skin tone SO BEAUTIFUL. I always knew Carolyn was a great hair dresser, and up-do specialist, but I was blown away by her hair coloring skills that time. If you look at her portfolio, her up-styling is specific: a look that will last you your entire wedding day. Of course she can also give you loose and romantic - you just need to talk to her, and she is very open and easy to talk to. After my first trial I was so put off with the whole hair and makeup experience. However when I got my hair done by Carloyn and makeup by Liz I felt so relieved. I knew right away I wanted to book them for my wedding. Swirls n curls rates looked good and they were very flexible. They drove all the way to the easty bay for a flat travel fee of $50. Unlike many stylist Carolyn didn't charge extra when I needed her to arrive at 6am. She also brought over two extra assistants at no extra cost. Just know that when you book for a party of 10 you will be charged for that number of people regardless if they all show up or not. For the trial they worked out of Carloyn's place and they worked quickly and efficiently. I could tell they have a lot of experience and I let out a big sigh of relief after the trial was over. If you go with them, the trial cost will be deducted from your total ( a big plus!) Check out her website (very nice and professional) to see if that's the kind of hair style you like. Just a few details to look out for if working with Carolyn: -Although Carolyn is trustworthy, she should start writing up a contract for everyone. -Communitcation through email was a bit slow at times -Too much hairspray for people with black hair. Last summer I was planning my destination wedding in Santa Cruz, CA. I wanted to have someone come do hair and make up for myself and my entire wedding party. I searched all over SC and had no luck finding anyone that would come to our hotel to do hair/make up. I then started searching in San Jose. I came across Carolyn....her prices were amazing, she was totally friendly. When I was in SC visiting family and wedding planning, I went to her house for my trail hair and make up. I absolutely loved it and she was willing to come to our hotel in Santa Cruz (without charging a fortune to do so!!) On the day of my wedding Carolyn and her team was outstanding! She did all SIX of my bridesmaids, 2 flower girls, and myself. We were finished EARLY! We were ready and waiting for the limo. I can't tell you want that did to help keep the stress level super low. Carolyn made sure that my wedding day started smooth....everyone was so happy with how their hair and make up came out. She is truly a professional and a pleasure to work with. I have receieved numerous compliment about how I looked that day (and in my pictures). Furthermore, my brial party and I were featured in a BRIDAL MAGAZINE! Carolyn did an AMAZING job with my hair for my wedding, so did Stephanie with the makeup. I don't know much about makeup but my maid of honor says that the way my eyes were done was really tricky and Stephanie pulled it off perfectly. It's so important to look great at you wedding and I truly felt like a princess. I had a vague idea of what I wanted going in and Carolyn effortlessly created exactly what I needed. My hairdo looked sophisticated, was comfortable, and looked perfect for over 12 hours and would've lasted longer! Same thing goes for the makeup. The only thing is I had hard time getting for a couple of days coordinating with Carolyn when I changed my mind at the last minute and asked her to do hair and makeup for a few other people from my wedding party. However, we got in touch after all and on the day of the wedding Carolyn and Stephanie arrived even a few minutes early and made everyone look perfect in the time frame that we had. Carolyn and her team did all the hair and makeup for a friend of mine's wedding 2 years ago. My friend was an extremely difficult bride to please, if you understand what I'm saying, but Carolyn was able to make her extremely happy and pretty much performed miracles. She made all of us look spectacular, I've never gotten so many compliments on my hair and makeup in my life. I looked like a porcelain doll. If I ever won the lottery I would hire these people to work for me full time, no joke. I have been trying to go blonde for the first time in my life and the hairstylists at another salon were really messing up my hair so I was looking for a new salon. I happened to find one close to my work in Sunnyvale with really great deals and figured I'd give it a try. Lo and behold, when I walked in I learned that my appointment was with Carolyn. I was so excited that I had found her because she had done such a great updo for the wedding but I didn't know she worked in a salon as well. She totally fixed my hair and made it look great. I also really appreciate that she gave me realistic expectations and didn't just bleach the crap out of my hair like some people will do. She was very concerned with keeping my hair healthy and was willing to help educate me on the aspects of blonde hair that I have never really needed to know before. I believe that she has 15+ years of experience in thr industry, and I can confidently say she is not just a master of the updo, but also color and cutting as well. Her blonde hair looks so goegeous and healthy, so I'm willing to take any advice she has for me with the maintinence. Carolyn and Stephanie were really great to work with. The trial make up didn't go as good as I hoped but on the day of, they were awesome. They arrived a little late but they still were able to get me, my 4 bridesmaids and 1 flower girl done on time. They both really know their stuff. If they suggest something, listen to them because they are the experts! My only bad comment is that Carolyn quoted me 2 different amounts for my hair/makeup trial. I think this should remain consistent with all clients. And based on the other reviews, she didn't even charge some people for their trials. I didn't get to looking for hair and make up until less than a week to my wedding, and they worked with my schedule and fit me in for both a trial and the actual wedding day. Carolyn and Stephanie made my wedding day so smooth and calm. The trial was easy (and free) and in 40 minutes, Carolyn and Stephanie showed me my daytime wedding makeup, evening wedding makeup, and wedding hair. They were quick and efficient and showed me they knew what they were doing. I was sold. On the day of my wedding, they were on time, quickly set up all their equipment and went to work. They were easy to talk to, easy to work with, and their recommendations were outstanding. Our makeup by Stephanie was incredible, and she gave us dramatic looks that really made us stand out. Changing from daytime to nighttime, and doing everything we wanted. Her range of makeup covered everything we could have wanted, and included false eyelashes and touchup kits for everyone at no extra cost. Our hair by Carolyn was unbelievable. Our hair didn't move all night, and held up through many hours of dancing. They took care of the little details that we weren't thinking about, calling housekeeping to clean our hotel rooms while we were gone, and too busy too remember to do so. I expected a lot more from the reviews and the website. i went for a trial run. these girls are amateurs. If you want a professional who knows what they are doing, go elsewhere. the only positive is that she is fairly cheap compared to others, but you get what you pay for. my makeup was hideous. i'm a bride, not a hoochie thats ready to go the club. stay away if you want QUALITY work. Also, Carolyn is hardly professional when it comes to corresponding with a potential client. there were days between emails and when she would respond via email, she wouldnt answer any of the questions i had asked. shady if you ask me. read more

I hired Carolyn to do my make up and hair for my wedding last May and did not love my experience. She was very hard to get a hold of of would take days to return phone calls. Because of that as I was driving to her place for my trial I didn't know her address! She didn't return my calls confirming the appointment and asking for her address so I searched on the Internet and found an address. I figured I'd try it and hoped that it was right since that info wasn't on her website. I think she finally called when I was almost to her place. I shrugged off the stress and went in to her apartment where she meets clients, excited to be getting my hair and makeup done. She was very nice, a good chit chatter, and made me feel comfortable but she sat me in the small kitchen to do my hair and makeup and I was a bit bothered by how dirty it was. I was hoping she kept her makeup and brushes cleaner than her kitchen. When she was done I liked the hair and makeup but was afraid the makeup might be too heavy for my style. I thought I just had to get used to it so I went home happy. Unfortunately I couldn't get over the feeling that I had way too much makeup on so Carolyn was nice enough to do another trial on my makeup free of charge. I appreciated that. I found out at some point before the contract that to hire her she had to do 7 services for me. That meant she'd have to do my hair and makeup (2 services) and 5 others on some of the bridal party. No one had planned on having theirs done professionally so I had to beg my friends to spend a lot of money they hadn't planned on. Luckily, they didn't mind. On the day of the wedding she started out at a hotel to do the others' hair and makeup. She arrived at my place late but I refused to get stressed. I wanted to enjoy my wedding day. The "assistant" she had told me about ended up doing my makeup, not Carolyn. This was news to me and I was nervous since I had done the trial runs with Carolyn and not this other woman, although, it turns out it was a good thing because her assistant did a much better job on my makeup than Carolyn did and it appeared to me that her "assistant" was teaching Carolyn. Carolyn watched very closely the whole time and kept asking her how she did things, about her technique, etc. I asked Carolyn a few times how we were doing on time since I couldn't see a clock and each time she answered we were fine. Well, she lied. She finished 5 minutes before I was supposed to leave for the church!!! I had to throw on my dress, shoes, and jewelry and I, believe it or not, didn't even have a chance to look at myself in the mirror to see head to toe before I had to run off to the church. Forget taking pictures with my bridesmaids before the wedding. That didn't happen! In the end my makeup was great thanks to Carolyn's assistant, I chose to do my hair elsewhere, I spent way too much money on Swirls n Curls, and I started out my wedding festivities very stressed and without photos with my bridesmaids. Carolyn has her good points but she needs to be more responsive, professional, and honest. I would not use her again or recommend her to anyone. read more

Carolyn recently did my hair and makeup for my wedding and I was not pleased with the results. We had two prior trials and on my wedding day, she could not duplicate what we agreed on during the second trial. my curls did not look natural and was too hairsprayed. i kept telling carolyn to not make my eyebrows too thick and she did. if you decide to have carolyn do your hair and makeup for your wedding, make sure to take pictures and show them to her...although that didn't help in my case. she tends to forget what we had agreed on. Carolyn should really consider taking polaroid pics to help her remember. the only positive thing i have to say is that carolyn did not charge for any of the trials. read more
