I found Ann on Instagram because I was looking for a hair and makeup artist for my wedding. I reached out to other artists but ended up picking her because she had 20+ years experience in the makeup industry. Another thing that stuck out when I was deciding was when she said she has an eye when it comes to what product looks good on her clients. She also encouraged me to look at her past clients to get a feel of what I wanted for myself. I scheduled a trial with her at her studio in Sunnyvale because I was taking engagement pictures that same day and also wanted to get a feel of how I was going to look for my big day. She arrived on time and we both hit it off very quickly. She asked to see a picture of how I normally do my makeup before she worked her magic. She didn't encourage inspo makeup pictures because she said every face/skin type is different, but she did ask for hair inspo pictures. I really appreciated her expertise since I am not a makeup guru. Not only did she make me feel beautiful, I still looked like myself. The day of my wedding, she came to my house at 6am to make sure I had enough time before my tea ceremony at 10am. Her other colleague also came because my 2 bridesmaids and my mom needed their hair and makeup done. Ann was calm and took her time to make sure she nailed the look. My eyes aren't even so she put tape to make it look as perfect as possible. She kept saying that one eye looked bigger but it wasn't a big deal for me. I wish I could give Ann more than 5 stars because she deserves them all. I've had my hair and makeup done by her on two occasions now and both times she's done a phenomenal job. Usually when I do my own makeup, a few hours later, my eyeliner has smudged to under my eye and my foundation is half gone, but when she puts makeup on you, it stays there. I researched many MUAs in the bay area. I don't get my make up done professionally so I was actually surprised at the going rate for wedding make up and hair. I wanted someone who was experienced in working with hooded eyes, and hard-to-handle Asian hair (when I curl it myself, it never stays!). I seriously contemplated about whether or not to do my own hair and make up but I wanted to look great for my wedding photos and not have to stress about my hair falling apart or smudging eyeliner. I decided it was my special day to splurge for myself and go with Ann! But since this was already a spurge for me, I did not do the hair and make up trial before the wedding. Ann is prompt with all emails and makes everything easy to understand. She is easy to talk to and gives make up advice too! I brought pictures of my hair inspirations for my bridesmaid and I since we did not have trials. Ann recommended that I show her a self photo of how I do my "going out" make up- which I realized is a great idea! That way your final look will still look like you, without straying too far. She is patient and explains each make up step, why she chose a particular color, how she applies it, and how it'll accentuate each facial feature. I wish I remembered all her tips but with only 2 hours of sleep and having to wake up at 5:30am-my brain wasn't fully func! Ann's talent is superceded by few, if any, in the South Bay in terms of makeup and hair. She has an incredible amount of experience, obvious in plethora of event makeup posted to both Yelp and her blog. I had a trial with her (during which she allowed me to use the Groupon) and she was amazing (see photos). Ann asked numerous questions especially about my daily makeup wear and what kind of look I was hoping to achieve. She essentially enhanced my makeup (I was going for a glam look) and added two layers of false lashes for more drama. She is the only makeup artist I've dealt with so far who has noticed and corrected my uneven eyelids. She showed me a side chignon with beautiful, intricate hair weaving and soft loose curls. Unfortunately, she is now pregnant and her due date is only a few days after our wedding (end of May 2013). She gave me two options: to cancel our contract entirely, or she would show one of her girls (of my choice) how she did my makeup. I opted to cancel the contract, and lost the $99 for the trial. I did want to note that she mentioned my hair was too short and fine for the voluminous look I wanted to achieve. She suggested I do extensions before my wedding and not cut my hair for as long as I could tolerate. The MAC foundation also emphasized my frown wrinkles a few hours later after my trial. Ann was my number one choice to have as my makeup and hair artist for my wedding, but due to unforeseen circumstances (much to my dismay), I will have to opt for someone else. Love the makeup. I have a mono lid which makes eyelid makeup slightly more difficult to put on because of the fold and it gets covered. She did a great job with my makeup and walked through the process. I don't know how to put on makeup and she told me about what she's putting on and what to expect like how lashes would feel after they're glued on. Allow a couple of hours for her to work her magic. She's also really good with asian complexions. My skin is fairly blotchy, yes I have some acne, skin can get oily, and on top of that I'm tan. She seemed a little bit heavy-handed on the foundation and powder, but she knew the end product well (what the camera will actually capture). She also styled my super-straight hair. My hair is so stubbornly straight that it uncurls itself on one end (even with copious amounts of hairspray or mousse in it), before I'm even done curling the other. I was also a bit worried about getting my makeup done in the morning when the shoot wouldn't finish until around 6PM. But I really shouldn't have. I just got the pictures this week and I look flawless in them. I owe great thanks to Ann for doing such a great job. She matched my complicated skintone perfectly. The curls stayed well into the next night. The false eyelashes were so much fun they stayed on for 8 days before finally coming loose in a corner (I had to wash my hair upside down in the sink and my face really carefully around my eyes during those days though so they wouldn't wash off). I found out about Ann through one of my co workers, and it was very last minute. That being said, I had no time to go in and get a demo done. So the first time I met Ann was actually the day of my wedding. She had no idea what I even looked like before then. Talk about being risky! Now this is the true testament of her amazing skills. My wedding was in April and Ann and her team were amazing!!!! Finding the perfect hair and makeup artist for my wedding was one of the hardest part of the planning. I honestly thought I will never find someone that I can trust completely and not be scared of the result on the day of until I found A-List Makeup. Ann was wonderful from start to finish. After explaining to her what I wanted, (bridal, light make up but with a WOW factor, a little dramatic) she did a very plain smokey eye and it was exactly the same as i would get from the Mac counter. For my October 11, 2008 wedding, I booked Ann as my makeup artist and hairstylist. I normally do not wear a lot of makeup and the only thing I do with my hair is wear it down or up in a ponytail. I had some concerns about my tattoos showing in my wedding photos, as I was wearing a dress that exposed my back and Ann helped me with covering those too. My biggest concerns were; a hairstyle that did not suit my face/body or style (for my wedding dress) and makeup that looked too heavy or did not stay put for a long enough time and would need a lot of retouching after photos, dancing, changing, eating, perspiring etc (weddings are long from start to finish). I did not have any idea how I wanted my hair done, so I asked Ann what she would suggest given the shape of my face, my hair length, my height, my neck/shoulder type and my dress style and went with her suggestion. After Ann did my makeup trial, I went out to lunch with my girlfriends and my then-fiance. They loved her work and I booked her the same day. Load of stress off my shoulders! Ann gave me a few suggestions and tips on what to do before my wedding day. I had my long hair layered and when Ann arrived the day of my wedding to work with me, everything went very smoothly. I must say that Ann is very easy to work with, she was very punctual, completely prepared and worked with ease even with all the commotion and fuss in the house (lots of people including relatives, children, barking dogs and bridal party members running around trying to get things together). I did not feel rushed or bored. I felt very at ease working with Ann. Like someone else said, she does not pressure you to purchase more services than you want. I would always recommend the trial session though. It gives both the artist and the bride/client a chance to see what they are working with and to 'tweak' things for the big day. The makeup stayed put for over 13 hours, and that is even after dancing! I didn't need to reapply! Ann did my hair and makeup for my Sept wedding. She and I got along really well. She made me feel at ease and was brutally honest, which I appreciate. She also arranged for the stylist who did the mom's and wedding party makeup. While she was over $1k (total for 5 ladies; Ann only did mine but coordinated the makeup artist), it was worth it and the pictures came out nice. I was totally ok with her booking more than one wedding. I wanted a relatively natural look and that's what I got, along with some great smoky eyes. If you want more WOW than natural, I'm sure you can get it. I think she was just great with following instructions and keeping her cool. She was also fast and responsive with emails. One of the things that really bothered me about other makeup artists I tried (I went through 3 trials altogether!) was how fake and money-grubbing they were. She was also quick (I mean, really it shouldn't take 3-4 hrs to put on your face)... Ann was not like that. I like efficient, honest, and fast --- because believe me, you wanna look great but you want as much sleep the night before as possible! No makeup can hide tiredness and sagging eyes! The only thing I wish is that the makeup brand Ann used on the actual day was different from the one she tried on me, and I personally liked the brand we did the trial with. Regardless, things came out fine. I did not have her all day, just from about 10am-noon'ish. Thanks ANN! You made me laugh and glad we bonded a bit. BTW, I chose Styles by Ann over Jira from Wowpretty (too heavy and not me) and Maria from PMA (too light, it all came off within an hour) .both referrals that did not work out.
