I trained many dancers who turned pro. When I came here, I could not find good schools close to where we moved. I found this school and it was wonderful. My daughter and I took classes there and were very impressed. It was hard to continue because it was a trip from where we lived, and during the weekdays, I was a single mom of 2, due to my husband's work away from home. I opened my own school, locally, and it was successful for 15 years, until I retired from ownership and passed it onto others. I retired, temporarily, from teaching (since 1973) due to bad knees. Once I had them replaced, I called the owner, who is a colleague of mine who had judged for me at my competition, to take some classes to get back to dance. She asked me to also teach. I've been teaching there and am still so impressed with, not only the professionalism, but the moral and ethics, that match mine, that I find are lacking in some schools, I love working there and how she, and the staff, truly care for the well-being of the dancers. Michelle will not abandon her ethics, just to make a parent, or child, happy. Her standards are too high, thank goodness. I am so happy, after the few years I took off from teaching and dancing, to be at this dance school. I love the fact that their annual student demo concert does not charge fees for costumes, or concert fee. Only ticket sales. It is run beautifully, and I love working with professional teachers who think like me and have the background of excellent training, not just as dancers, but as teachers. If you are looking for an ethical school for your child, or yourself, with people who care more about you than what you can bring to them, this is the place. Sergei is the man!!!!!! We absolutely LOVED working with Sergei every week. It was so sad when our…read moretime was over and we didn't get to spend our weekly visits with him! I surprised my husband by getting a Groupon for Fred Astaire. I had been reading all of the brides saying how choreographing their first dance was one of the best decisions they made. I figured we could try out a lesson with the Groupon and decide if we wanted to fully commit or not. If worse came to worse, I figured we had fun taking a couple of lessons. Of course we loved our first appointment with Sergei and immediately booked our weekly sessions with him! We procrastinated a bit so we started about two months out from our wedding. When I called she kindly told me that we better get moving if we wanted to be ready for our wedding day. lol. We were looking to merge two songs together into one dance. We gave Sergei the time stamps of the songs and he arranged a beautiful dance for us with the perfect blend of both songs. We worked hard week after week and felt like contestants on dancing with the stars. Once Sergei suggested we video ourselves and watch it in between visits, it made a huge difference! It was very difficult remembering if we were doing the steps correctly just from our memory. We continued to add on new sections week after week until we finally put everything together. The week leading up to our wedding we did a practice run in front of everyone at the studio that night. It was very stressful with everyone watching us but fun. The whole idea is to get you used to people watching you perform the dance. I really wanted Sergei to be there on our wedding night like you would see your childhood dance instructor on the side of the stage at your dance recital. lol. He was there in spirit! My husband had a heart attack when he saw how ginormous my wedding gown was. He said, "how are we going to do this with this dress?!?!?!" I told him that I showed Sergei from the beginning and that we should be able to make it happen! lol I think we did Sergei proud! If it wasn't for COVID, we could have gone to show him our video by now! The studio itself is clean and spacious. There is TONS of parking. They have large open windows so you can see directly into the studio, which is fine. There are wall to wall mirrors where you are practicing. The bathrooms are clean. They have places for you to keep your things while you are dancing. You are practicing on the dance floor simultaneously with other dancers and their instructors. If you book the same time slot you are likely to see the same people week to week. That was our experience and we were able to meet new people that were all very kind and friendly. They even acknowledged both of our birthdays! They hug you hello and goodbye and it really feels like a family! We highly recommend Fred Astaire Dance Studio. They are all extremely professional and hard-working. Many of them (if not all of them) are still traveling for dance competitions themselves and have won many awards! They are excellent teachers! It's pretty easy to find a session that works with your schedule. They also work with you to pay for your lessons as you go versus having to pay one lump sum when you sign your contract. They put the music together for you and create a dance perfect for you and your dance partner. Sergei was kind, patient and professional as he worked with us to be the best dancers we could be. She is always pushing and challenging me. Even when I am not sure of my abilities, she strives to get more out of me. This personalization is what I've always wanted and that other schools are lacking. In addition to the dance instruction, Julie is a blast to work with and we laugh the entire lesson. They structure the classes well so that you can put together a routine by the time you finish up a course. The instructors are very knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful. We went to one of the later classes in the series, so we needed some clarification on a part of the routine that we had missed in prior classes. One of the instructors, Craig, was great about showing us what we had missed and helping us both get it right. He didn't just show us what we had asked about; he asked us to do the entire routine to make sure we understood it all, which was great. I'm looking forward to attending the rest of the classes in this series as well as the higher-level classes.
