I love dancing! As I traveling nurse, I have experienced multiple schools across the country. The quality of lessons I am receiving at Salsa in the Suburbs is second to none. Big dance schools like to hold you back & put everyone into a single curricular mold. I was always bored and wanting more. All the other staff members & students here are knowledgeable and welcoming as well. Socials and practice parties are an added bonus. I've always loved Salsa, but now my interest in Bachata has been piqued as well. Do yourself a favor and try Sensual Bachata! Julie is a particularly great coach! She is always pushing and challenging me. Even when I am not sure of my abilities, she strives to get more out of me. This personalization is what I've always wanted and that other schools are lacking. In addition to the dance instruction, Julie is a blast to work with and we laugh the entire lesson. We found a Groupon for a bunch of classes here, and we recently redeemed it and went to our first class. I'd been to classes at another venue before, and while I enjoyed those classes, I do appreciate the different levels they have at Salsa in the Suburbs. They structure the classes well so that you can put together a routine by the time you finish up a course. The instructors are very knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful. We went to one of the later classes in the series, so we needed some clarification on a part of the routine that we had missed in prior classes. One of the instructors, Craig, was great about showing us what we had missed and helping us both get it right. He didn't just show us what we had asked about; he asked us to do the entire routine to make sure we understood it all, which was great. My fiancé and I started taking dance classes as part of a Christmas present, and absolutely love it. Julie is the owner and runs most of the classes, and she is the best! She makes you feel comfortable no matter what level of dancer you are. We began taking the Beginner Salsa and Bachata classes consecutively on the same night, and have learned so much in the short time since we began. I really look forward to our Thursday nights. I tried out one beginner class with my sister and wanted to continue weekly classes but opted for the great salsa boot camp instead because of conflicts during a few of the weeks of the 8 week program. I have taken almost every sort of class offered at Salsa in the Suburbs, and I am very enthusiastic about this school, its teachers, and its students. They are beginner friendly and teach at a pace that treads the line between "I can do this" and "I am challenged". Recently, I completed their Beginner Salsa Teacher Training. I understand that formalized courses and certification programs are not common. This course started with leading a warmup and continued to both leading and following the beginner pattern. These were challenging in a completely different ways! The instructor wasn't afraid to split the class for those that wanted to concentrate on Beginner Salsa 1 and those that wanted to try Beginner Salsa 2. She would also go out of her way to provide special attention and instruction when she saw someone might need it. A huge part of this process is assisting with the actual Beginner Salsa classes: while not officially required, this is a highly recommended and valuable opportunity. I ran through this training program twice, and I really felt myself and my confidence growing as it progressed. Special kudos to Julie, the instructor: she has an amazing knack for making us feel like we can succeed, and then proving that to us. She is one of the most positive and encouraging people that I know, and backs up her smile and laughter with exceptional technical know-how and teaching skills! read more

It's time I reviewed my good friends at Salsa in the Suburbs. I have been coming here for about 8 months now and I definitely look forward to the classes. My experience has been solely with the salsa classes. the studio also has Zumba workouts and ballroom dancing. It all started with a groupon... got me into a few basic salsa class and the rest is history. Julie is a great and patient salsa instructor who will is always energized and will help you along the way. Classes are available at different times during the week, and when you buy classes you can use them whenever you want during a set time period ( something like 3 months!) The ratio of men/women is pretty equal, there are plenty of other students who like to hang out here during the week because it's a very social place to be and often come into the class when there is a need for males or females. I went from not knowing to salsa to joining up in a performance class for the upcoming Christmas party. It feels great to see the progress you make and it just motivates you to come out more and more. If you're serious or just curious, stop in because the first class is free for new students and get ready to dance and make new friends! read more

If you want to learn salsa, bachata, tango, belly dance, or work out in a Zumba class, I can't think of a better place to learn. I signed up for an 8 week beginners salsa course here and I can't rave enough about this place so I'll do my best to organize my thoughts below. -OWNER: The place is privately owned by Julie, who is one of the friendliest people you will ever meet! She does this because she loves the dance and no matter your age, gender or dance experience, you WILL become a great dancer! -VARIETY: There are various classes of different levels offered throughout the week. There are specials that are constantly running and if you miss a class during your course, you can make it up by taking any of the other classes within that time frame. -ZUMBA: I missed a couple of my beginner salsa classes so I made it up by taking Zumba (which is led by a different instructor) and if you've never done it, you NEED to. Its a great workout, a ton of fun and anyone can do it; the diversity is surprising! -PARTIES: They offer all types of parties during the months including salsa parties and Girls Night Out. I haven't been to one yet but I am planning to asap! -SALSA: Compared to other places, you will learn a lot more steps and techniques in this 8 week course, including dancing etiquette! The people who join are incredibly friendly and fun to dance with. If you always wanted to take a dance class, this is the best place for you to go. Its affordable, you'll learn a lot and the people are great. I recruited two people from the city to join the class and they willingly make the trip to Media so you have no excuse! read more

Located conveniently near the heart of the beautiful Media, PA, there are so many things to love about this dance studio. Some friends and I put on our dancing shoes, packed a bag of Jack Daniels mixers and headed out for our one hour Salsa lesson and then the 5th Anniversary dance party. My boyfriend and I don't dance and certainly nothing as complicated as this. The only time Salsa has ever come up is when we are eating tortilla chips!!!! By the end of the night we were beaming with smiles at the fact that we were dancing.... and that we were dancing okay for such horrible two left feeters. It was an absolute hoot of a great time. I really enjoyed the Beginner I salsa class! Julie is so fun and energetic! I had done a little salsa elsewhere before but my foundation mainly comes from years of Zumba. I felt the class was very easy to follow and structured in a way to accommodate a wide range of beginner levels. If you needed help with a particular move, they usually offered the option to work it out with one of the teaching assistants while the rest of the class learned the new move for the week. Each week is a new lesson. There is no requirement to attend classes in series, but the classes are meant to be progressive and the lessons build off of each other so it is in your best interest to follow the series. We missed one of the lessons and though we picked it up later on, it tends to be the move we fumble on :P. My only complaint is that the classes fly by so fast! read more

I'm a dancer and I love this place! Julie (the owner) runs a tight ship and her teaching methods are quite different that I am used to... but that's a good thing. Her syllabus for each program makes learning easy. She even lets you record a video of your lesson so you can review it at home. They also have fun practice dances so you have somewhere to dance when your confidence or skills are not up there yet. Mostly, the fun atmosphere is reflected in the staff and the dancers. I do not know where to begin! I have tried for years to find a place to get formal salsa lessons without going into the city. Unfortunately, it was strongly suggested to have a partner, or deal with being in "the hole' most of your session if there were more females than males. I found that this is not the case at Salsa in the Suburbs! There was an equal (or one off) male to female ratio in most of my lessons. All of the instructors are friendly and eager to help you with the steps that you find the most difficult, and come from different dance backgrounds. An added bonus is not only hosting monthly dance parties on Saturday nights, but monthly practice sessions on Thursdays. They also have different performing classes where you learn a routine based on your level of expertise and perform it after three months. I feel that this really increases your skill level, not to mention getting active while having fun! read more

Julie is amazing! Not only she is extremely talented, but she really cares about her students, and makes every effort possible so that our lives will be easier. She puts a lot of work into making sure that her students will have a partner to dance with, which is complicated and rare in this field. I started classes at Salsa in the Suburbs as a refresher course. I had not danced salsa for several years, and did not want to jump right in to parties without reviewing the basics. The studio also offers classes in Bachata and Ballroom dances, as well as workshops to add styling to the patterns learned in class. The owner, Julie, has an interesting and unique approach to lessons. The progressive nature of the classes has worked very well for me. The environment at the studio is friendly and welcoming, as led by Julie and demonstrated by the other teachers. I'm an introvert who wanted to learn to Salsa. I've looked at different places in NY, CA, and PA. Didn't find one for many years that met my standards (the bar is set quite high) until I came across this lovely studio. The owner/ instructor/ Salsero and the staff are very nice. Best part is that you don't have to bring your own partner because dance partners switch constantly, which helps learning to flow with the rhythm, exponentially. I started dancing at Salsa in the Suburbs in October of 2015 because I wanted to try something new and thought salsa would be a fun way to meet people. Julie (the owner) has created an excellent teaching program, and her staff of instructors are incredibly friendly and make it easy to learn and have fun. During my time at salsa in the suburbs I ended up dancing 3 days a week and participated in a beginner salsa performance. It was a truly unforgettable experience and, most importantly, I met a bunch of people who have become very close friends of mine. This past March I moved to Cincinnati, and I have spent the last month searching for a new salsa studio (looking for intermediate lessons). I've tried three different places and none of the studios compare to Salsa in the Suburbs. Now that I have seen how other places structure their lessons and have met other dance instructions I can fully appreciate how great the program and instructors are at Salsa in the Suburbs. If you are on the fence about trying salsa I highly recommend that you give Salsa in the Suburbs a shot. I really wish I still lived in the area so that I could continue dancing there. read more

I always wanted to learn Salsa, but I was afraid that I would be the old lady in the corner watching everybody else have fun. My younger daughter decided that we should take lessons together at Salsa In The Suburbs so that I would meet people nearer my age and have fun. She was right! I have been there for over six years now and I enjoy it more and more. I go social dancing right at the studio twice a month and out with friends I've made there anytime during the month. It's a big family of all ages and levels with friendly caring instructors and a well planned curriculum that grows with you. Performance classes are an added bonus that help you progress faster and meet new friends. It's not just Salsa- you can learn Bachata, Sensual Bachata,Tap,Ballroom and Styling and more. Julie, the owner and instructor of many of the Latin dance classes, is phenomenal! She takes such an interest in every one of her students and is great at what she does. Best dance studio in Philadelphia area! Not only the atmosphere is fantastic but all the instructors are so helpful...and normal! It does not look like they are 'performing' art on the stage - they look like you and me ( curvy girls in their middle age...or guys- that love not only Latin music but good food and people as well;) There is no need to worry about something there- they put you at ease right away. All ages, shapes and ethnicities are welcome there! At their group lessons- everyone dance with everyone...so if you think you'll not have a partner - think again. The best 'dancers' and instructors are waiting just outside of your classroom- waiting for a signal from Julie - the owner - that they are needed :) For me, personally - I wanted to learn to dance with my hubby. and have fun with with him. For years- it was not possible, because he's a 'computer' guy that thought that 'dancing' is not what real men do. On my birthday he surprised me-with some salsa classes that he bought on groupon ( guy thing;). We started to go there...and he liked it after the first few lessons. Now, after a 3 months of going there, he's enjoying it more and more...and thinking less and less about the steps. It's a great joy for me- seeing him like that. My fiancé and I decided that we were going to take dance lessons for our first dance at our wedding. This place is a nice introduction to salsa dancing. There are more advanced schools, but Salsa in the Suburb's specialty is its friendly vibe and its location in the suburbs. It's a good choice for beginners who may not want to commute to the city. The owner is extremely welcoming to new students. I live in NYC and wanted to surprise my sister with a private salsa lesson for her bday. She loves the music and Latin culture. I called a few spots in philly to get no answer or no availability for a Saturday lesson. I saw salsa in the suburbs on yelp and contacted them because at this point I was getting nervous because I had 3 days to figure everything out. I gave them a call and the owner answered the phone. She offered me a great price and confirmed my appointment. I was thrilled but worried because I have never been to Media Pa. But using Map Quest it was easy. Upon arrival we met with our instructor Robert. He walked us through the basic steps and quickly advanced. This was my sisters first lesson and by the end of our 1.5hr lessons she was spinning and mastered the basic steps! This was not my first lesson but I was impressed with his method of teaching and the little tricks he taught us so that we look official when we go to a salsa party! I highly recommend Robert and Salsa in the Suburbs. The space was private and clean and he even let us bring our own music. Needless to say we had the best day ever!!! My review is based on private dance lessons for a first dance. My partner and I wanted to do a salsa choreography for our first dance, and we got paired up with the incredible Shauna Belizeando. I do not even know where to begin with Shauna, she is absolutely, in every possible way amazing! She is an excellent instructor, my partner and I were a disaster when we walked in, we were never on the same step, beat, nor rhythm. Shauna was excellent at breaking steps down, at explaining moves and helping us communicate as dance partners. I can't tell you how good and clear of an instructor she is. She would walk us through steps, give us notes and make videos for us. She also made herself available after class via chat if we had any questions, and she was super responsive. Independently of our first dance, this was a great investment in helping us understand each other better (much better) while dancing. In addition to her superb instructing skills, she is simply a great human being with positive energy that made the whole process very enjoyable. My partner and I did the 10 class package, we learned an incredible amount of moves and walked away with a kick-ass 4-minute salsa choreography. I thoroughly recommend Shauna for private lessons, she is incredible, and you will have a lot of fun. Shauna is as good as it gets. read more

My husband and I wanted to find a place to learn how to dance for our wedding. I must say, We both had the rhythm of a clown with two left feet and were a little sensitive about it. My (now) husband and I didn't want to just dance like 6th graders for our first dance so we looked around for lessons. We found an excellent deal in our own backyard of Media! Susan's expertise and willingness to help us was so wonderful. Overall, we did 10 lessons with Susan and really looked forward to every single one. We laughed a lot with her teaching style. It was a great experience. Then we hired them to come teach an hour salsa class at our wedding reception. People loved it and was so much fun. It was such a memorable, unique, interactive experience. Throughout all the scheduling and wedding stress, Julie was such a pleasure to work with. She was extremely professional and even beyond that was extremely generous and considerate in accommodating us. She responded quickly to my questions and was very clear about our options and recommending things when we asked.
