Chris accommodated our urgent request for a pool pump failure. Although we were over an hour from their territory, he pulled a new pump from his inventory and recommended a local technician to install. The service and sales process was bumpy at first due to the unique situation and challenging efforts to find fittings but ultimately was resolved. Swim Gem closed my pool today for the first time. (Sylvan did it last 7yrs and got worse every year) This was such a great experience! Guys were thoughtful, cleaned up everything, explained what and why they did things differently. This great experience got me to thinking of how much I leaned on them this summer and they were always there for me. I called yesterday afternoon and asked the cost of a pool closing kit for an 18,000 gallon pool. The guy on the phone said the kit should be $47. I asked when they closed as I was heading into Leesburg to the outlet mall and would be close by. Ended up going this afternoon instead. My daughter called to double check the location asking if it was in the same mall as Ben Franklin. She was told that Ben Franklin closed a long time ago and they were behind Wells Fargo. This is not really helpful since I was looking for a landmark and there is more than one Wells Fargo in Leesburg. Finally managed to find the place in the same old spot. In the same mall where Ben Franklin used to be located. I walked in and there were 4 guys in the store. One asked if he could help and I said I needed a pool closing kit for a 18,000 gallon pool. He started grabbing things off the shelf talking about a 30,000 gallon pool and I corrected him. Then he rang me up and told me it would be $89. I asked him why the price had gone up since yesterday. He said this year they had broken up closing kits since people needed so many different things and he didn't know anything about the price yesterday. I explained that I had checked online, with Leslie's in Herndon, and had called this store yesterday. I told him I could get the same kit at Leslie's in herndon for $46 or have it shipped to my local Walmart from a pool supply company for $35. He had no explanation and told me that's what they charge. He also said the chemicals weren't the same from elsewhere. This made no sense at all. Shock is shock, algaecide is algaecide, and a float is a float. We've had a pool for 18 years. We've shopped at this store, Anthony Sylvan, and lots of other stores including Lowe's and Walmart. I am well aware that pool parts, chemicals, and so forth cost a premium, but this is honestly rapacious. There is no reason to charge double what the going rate is for a closing kit that isn't even a complete kit. In addition, it is clear that this store has changed a lot since the last time I was there about 4 years ago. Last time I was in people were helpful and I didn't feel like I had been ripped off because I'm not willing to pay twice as much for things. Needless to say, I've learned my lesson. I won't be back again, and I will let my pool and spa owning neighbors know about this as well. Tl;dr: Won't be back because of unhelpful customer service on the phone and exorbitant pricing. read more

I needed a bag for my Polaris pool cleaner. I was charged $48! I asked if this was a mistake and the clerk said " we just put a small markup on what Polaris charges us". I found it hard to believe so when I got home I google the item and I could get the exact same thing for $15-$17 on line. I'm done with Swim Gem!!! I've been price gouged for the last time. read more

Pros - very helpful, nice people in the Leesburg store. They take the time to explain how to correctly balance your pool water, etc., and load the car for you. Cons - on the service side, I was very disappointed to come home from vacation and see that my pool was full of algae. The gentleman I spoke to while on vacation told me my pool was cleaned on the 25th although our power was out. The female I spoke to in the store when I returned from vacation told me my power was out when they arrived but they cleaned the pool on the next day (we had folks staying at our house too and they saw no one in the backyard). I arrived home 4 days later to an algae filled pool which had no chlorine in it (it takes 6 days before we need to reapply chlorine tablets). I communicated all of this to the lady I spoke with and her response was "well, we have had a lot of rain" but she would have the service manager call me back. He still hasn't called. Very disappointing for a company I have used since my pool was built. read more

Sorry, but rethink using Swim Gem. Had a great experience with technicians that were sent out for a pool orientation and minor pump issue, but pool closing was a nightmare. Waited a month for an appointment and was sorely disappointed. Technicians left a mess on the pool deck including pool debris, chemicals, parts of the pool cover, and their cigarette butts. Asked the technicians to walk me through the pool closing process since I'm a new pool owner and they abondoned the job. From a novice standpoint, it looks like I paid them to trash my yard. They were onsite for 30 minutes or less. When I callled to follow up, I was met with a hasty tone and angry voicemail later. I asked not to be billed until I was was given a report of what they did and they charged my credit card for almost $500 without my permission. This included bogus parts that I already owned. Stopped by the store to resolve in person and was met with condescending Cliff. He was hateful, demeaning, and prided himself on the fraudulent charge to my credit card. Buyer beware here. read more

Great service, reliable, trustworthy, super helpful - - have had a salt water pool, spa... OK Pool opening - wish they had left deck cleaner (lots of debris left over from pool cover - we had to blow off ourselves) - and we spent a lot of time the couple of days after opening sweeping bottom of pool and getting leaves out of pool. For $500 cost of opening - expected more (especially when they said it was one of the cleanest pools they'd seen to open initially). read more

I had used Swim Gem for some time but recently their service is just atrocious. They just don't care about you as the customer. I had them open the pool and the next day the pump was not pulling water from the skimmer. Just as some background, We had closed one of the skimmers several years ago since a pipe had collapsed and they told us the pool can work fine with just one skimmer, and in fact it did for many years. I called them the next day and told them about the lack of flow and they said that it's likely that also the other skimmer might have collapsed and I should call someone that does pool repairs. I told them that it is unlikely that it collapsed over night. Could there be other reasons for the lack of flow and whether they could come out and check. They told me they have so many openings that the don't have time. Even though they took care of our pool for almost 10 years and earned well they made no effort to help. I called a friend and diagnosed the problem myself and the problem got solved by backwashing the filter. This has been an atrocious customer service experience and I have immediately changed pool company. I would strongly recommend that people don't use Swim Gem for their pool service read more

Consider how you want to be treated as a customer before doing business with Swim Gem. Prior to June 2016, I was pleased with the chemicals and various pool parts purchases I've made as well as the Polaris repair the business did for me. I didn't mind paying more for the chemicals in exchange for the expertise, and I like doing business locally. I called the owner to explain that my wife was en route to buy chemicals. I wanted to discuss my situation as I am more familiar with the pool's workings than she is. I told the owner that my pump had been broken for almost a week and wouldn't be repaired for another five days. I asked him what chemicals I need to keep my pool from becoming a safety hazard. He informed me that he didn't have my "allegiance" as I bought the pump elsewhere so he would not be providing any advice to me on chemicals. I can empathize with the plight of local bricks and mortar stores in the era of superstores and online discounters; however, expecting to be a sole supplier of all things aquatic or else treating the customer with a disrespect does not instill loyalty. I ended the call by saying that I'd estimate the amount of shock I needed and have my wife buy it from his store. Immediately after hanging up, I realized that I didn't want to give this business another $1. I re-routed her to another pool store. I will not return to Swim Gem. read more
