First I marvelled at the baked goodies in the store window and how I loved the vintage, timeless feeling. Inside it was like stepping into a time machine back in time with the old-fashion vibes, decor and baked goods. We were greeted warmly by Helen and I got my cinnamon roll and butter tart. This bakery finds itself the heart and soul of the community. The people who work here are wonderful, and the tasty treats inside are great. The thing that will probably draw you in is their cinnamon bun. They're very proud of it. And here's the thing - they have every right to be. It's a delicious cinnamon bun. It's not deep, but it's wide, which increases the amount of delicious inner coil, while reducing the amount of outer crust. They have a number of dairy-free pies, and will make other dairy-free options upon request. Now, a bakery having great treats is one thing, but that's an expected thing. Being committed to the community is something completely different. When I walked in, my family waiting outside, I didn't realize they were cash only. But did that keep me from the much needed cinnamon bun? No. It did not. Without payment, I left with warm cinnamon bun in hand. How did such a thing transpire? Did I distract them, and run away with glee? Indeed I did not. I was told to just come on by tomorrow and pay for it then. I don't want to get all spiritual on Yelp, but I swear I encountered an angel when I came here last week. I was bored and restless amid the lockdown and decided to go for a long walk ... I ended up in the Junction (an area I rarely visit) and had a hankering for a cinnamon bun (I miss Dufferin Mall, okay?). I started looking for a bakery that was open and low-and-behold found myself in front of Sweet Trolley, with a huge sign out front saying [something like] "Try our famous cinnamon buns!" I couldn't believe my luck! Popped inside and the lady was soooo nice! Friendly, chatty and kept calling me "honey" and "baby"... must be the social isolation hitting me, but boy did I need her in that moment! I managed to get one of the last 3 buns, which she said was lucky in itself because they usually sell out. After she rang me up ($3.75 for one), she told me it is cash-only, which I hadn't realized. I only had my debit card.... She let me walk away with it anyway. *cries* I promised I'd be back to repay her someday and in the meantime, I'd write her a glowing review on Yelp. Unfortunately for me this bakery was sadly disappointing. I googled it and it had great reviews and smelled wonderful and I wanted to try some homemade pies so I bought two and also a cheesecake, cookies and cinnamon bun. So basically a little of everything. The owner was super sweet and I was super excited to try everything. The pies were absolutely dry, the crust was too thick, the pumpkin pie was pasty and the blueberry pie was not bad -filling was ok but overall cloyingly sweet. Like way to sweet. Cookies looked amazing but fell apart and also weird flavours. Artificial tasting and really not good. Had higher hopes for the cheesecake and cinnamon buns but both were so bad I had to throw them out. the cinnamon buns had hard icing which would have been okay if the inside at least had that soft sticky gooey quality but it was just hard and dried out. Cheese cake. No words for how bad it was. :( I really tried to like one of these but sadly I feel like I wasted a lot of money and enjoyed nothing. read more

I was walking along Dundas west to look for brunch and found this dated looking bakery with its display window filled with baked goods. I was curious and went inside and felt like I had traveled back in time with all the original decor still present from the 70s. The bakery has been open for over 40 years. They are known for the cinnamon buns which you can get 6 and get one free. I opted for a pumpkin scone, strawberry rhubarb pie and the last pumpkin pie. Everything was very fresh and just freshly baked that morning. The pumpkin scone didn't have a strong pumpkin flavour to it but it wasn't too dry and just the right amount of sweetness. The strawberry rhubarb pie was a bit sweet but a surprising kick of cinnamon with every bite. The crust was still crispy the next day and coated with the perfect amount of sugar. I brought the pumpkin pie as a hostess gift and it was a huge hit. Nice and soft filling with the perfect homemade crust that fed all 6 of us. I'm not sure if they used pureed pumpkins from a can or fresh pumpkins but it still tasted amazing. They also have the option of making things eggless if you put in a request ahead of time! Would definitely go back for more as the customer service was great and the baked goods delicious and not over- priced. read more

Please, go here instead of hippy, overpriced Bunners next door. This is an old family-owned bakery, the people are lovely, and the desserts are delicious. The woman who served us (my friend goes here regularly and says she's usually there and is always lovely) was so friendly and warm. I think her name is Helen. After seeing I couldn't decide between the mini peach pie and the brownie, she said she was going to do something special for me and she gave me the brownie free. I've been spending more and more time in the junction, and every day I Pass by this bakery tempted by the smells coming from inside and the signs in the window declaring "best cinnamon bun in Toronto." Well today I gave into temptation and ventured in overwhelmed by the cinnamon smells wafting into the street. It was here I met Helen, the friendliest sweetest (no pun intended) baker ever! She gave me the run down on the bakery, what they offer and even complimented me on my smile (flattery will TOTALLY get you anywhere). I asked for a cinnamon bun and she proudly served it up warmed up in the microwave and offered me a glass of water while I enjoyed it standing in the doorway. Now I love Cinnabon but this place wipes the floor with their buns and then some. The sign is right. Greatest cinnamon buns in Toronto (and maybe that I've ever eaten). Why is that? When I walk I'm here im immediately reminded of my childhood and waking into the Rideau Bakery in Ottawa (another old old school place). You walk into the Trolley and you immediately want to eat a cookie, there is no two ways about it. Ive had the very reasonable priced cookies here as well as some of the savory pastries. I believe one was cheese and something. This is Maltese bakery so it was something with some Meditterian influence. The ladies who work here are also charming and super enthusiastic. From the old-fashioned cash register, to the windows that look like they haven't been changed in decades, this place is old-school through and through. The service? Outstanding, helpful and friendly. I purchased a cinnamon roll which they make all day and apparently they sell out pretty quickly - the gentleman right before me bought nine for a party! Popped in today because we were looking for somewhere that was open on Thanksgiving Day so we can get a pumpkin pie. This place was open and had a bunch of fresh pies on display. We put the pie in the oven for 5-7 minutes to heat after lunch. Just had the pumpkin pie with my family and everyone can't stop eating it, even my dad who is extremely picky about his sweets. The pumpkin pie was so fresh, not super sugary or heavy, very light crust and not greasy. Looks family owned, and extremely friendly folks. Great job! read more

I've lived in the Junction for almost four years and for almost the entire time this bakery has been a mystery to me, my neighbours and everybody! The storefront is distinctively old fashioned, their displays and signage haven't changed the entire time I've lived here, the decor is super faded and there has always been a distinct lack of BAKED GOODS IN THE BAKERY. Over the years I'd heard rumours that somebody saw someone buying a cake, or a pie or cookies but I could never verify these stories. Until now. It appears that the bakery has been occasionally opening up on weekends and for holidays for the last few months! This was confirmed by my very eyes last weekend when I popped over after going to the Junction Farmer's Market and I couldn't believe what I saw! They had counters full of mini-pies, trays upon trays of cookies, pastries and danish! We ordered a half dozen of these deliciously buttery shortbread cookies and a cherry pie to-go. The pie was still warm from the oven! Considering that the only other game in town right now is Bunners, a gluten free bakery, it was a super treat to taste something homemade, fresh and buttery! They primarily sell European style cookies, sweets and pies, and seem to be open semi-regularly these days. I heartily encourage you to give them a try. read more

I was so excited to find a nut-free bakery, it is so hard to find things I can eat (I'm allergic). I made such a fuss that the owner let me take a photo with the nut free sign. I bought an assortment of sweets: rhubarb pie, cupcake, cinnamon bun, cannoli and one of every cookie they make. That's not too much, right? After hearing about their cinnamon buns, going there to pick some up did not disappoint! It was there best cinnamon bun I've ever had. It doesn't have that smell you get at Eglinton station from cinnabon, but the taste is amazing! But you know what is even better? The carrot rum cake. When you open the foam container is held it, the smell of rum just comes straight out and punches you. When tasting, it's a really nice balance that is delicious. You will know you are at the right place when you see an unnecessary overabundance of hand-drawn signs all over the windows. Most of the signs offer not so subtle exclamations of their superiority to "other competitors", by which they probably mean Bunner's next door. 2. The sweet rolls are amazing, but a bit on the expensive side. They offer a buy so many get one free scheme, but even this doesn't make them a value. 3. They offer cookies, cupcakes and other pastries. The cupcakes I have had were quite good and better priced at 2$ each. 4. The bakers who run the place are helpful and want to please. If you can handle around 4$ or so for a sweet roll, definitely check it out. read more

I'm only basing this review off a cannoli :) I stumbled upon this old-fashioned bakery shop during the Junction Solstice festival and have fallen in love. This place is such a little gem in the neighbourhood. The prices are great, for example, a giant cannoli was $2.50, spanakopita was $3.75 or something under $4, and pastry puffs were under $3. The cupcakes and cookies looked amazing, and they had unique flavours - orange flavour cookie! Overall I see myself coming here very often, and for special events. First of all, let me say I do have a decent palate, but I'm not above eating something mediocre as I do not like to waste food, so let that be a foreword into the fact that I actually went as far as to throw out whole pies. I was on my way to dinner with a friend when I passed by this place and noticed the pies in the window (which looked amazing). I went in and ended up buying 3 different types of fruit pies, 1 banana chocolate loaf and an assortment of cookies. The pies were seriously disgusting. Like, to the point of being inedible. I threw them all in the garbage which was a total shame. They looked so amazing when I saw them in the window (perfectly browned), but when I cut into them I discovered an extremely thick and gluey filling that had barely any fruit whatsoever. All 3 types of pies were like this (I got cherry, raspberry and blueberry). It was as though they were trying to stretch the fruit by adding a tonne of sugar and flour to the mixture. I tried to salvage them by heating them up to see if that would make it softer, but it did not work. Also, the dough on the bottom was raw (even after putting it in the oven for a good 20 minutes extra trying to soften up the filling). The cookies were very firm, crumbly and tasteless, not soft and chewy like you would expect a freshly baked cookie to be. They were edible if you dipped them in tea. The loaf was okay, but it could have been way better. First, some spices could have jazzed it up a lot (cinnamon, clove, nutmeg) and the loaf looked very chocolatey when I bought it, but when I cut into it I discovered that there were actually no chocolate chips rippled throughout the loaf and that they were merely just sprinkled on top to show the illusion of being chocolatey. All in all, save your money and go somewhere else. There are way better bakeries in the area. read more

We moved to the neighbourhood recently (this month recent) and as we had a few days off were eagerly exploring the neighbourhood on foot in the early mornings. We stopped in on one of the hottest days of the year (imagine working in a bakery in 45 degree weather). They welcomed us to the junction with big smiles, a treat with our purchase and apologies for the heat... LOL Can you imagine apologizing for heat in a bakery, on the hottest day of the year! I had moved and wasn't about to cook... Simply put it was an easy breakfast! So amazing service, hours and selection (and they make the block smell AMAHZING!)... Oh yeah, and their cinnamon buns (with just 15-30 seconds in a good microwave and ample forks) could possibly bring world peace. Almond cakes also a less-sweet, but equally yummy treat! read more

Firstly, I have been reading through all of the reviews of Sweet Trolley Bakery on here so far and am amused by their extreme polarity. It seems everyone loves or loathes the place ! That in itself should tell you that this special bakery is a worthwhile venture as anything that elicits such adamant public opinion must be an intense experience. I am admittedly a colossal fan of Helen and all of her baked delights. Her cannolis are rich, her breads fresh and giving, her cookies - particularly her ouzo-imbued sugar cookies - abolutely mouth-watering. I am not an advocate of gluten-free baking and (call me a purist) find their offerings ludicrously tasteless and devoid of what desserts should be --- RICH and BUTTERY and FLAVOURFUL.
