My date was craving a Hawaiian experience so we came here for a birthday smorgasbord. His mai tai hit hard on the spiced rum but my frozen painkiller was delicious as all painkillers are. It was a quiet and empty night an hour to closing (they actually still accommodate a party of 12 very close to closing as well). No televisions and beautiful low lit bar with tiki vibes. We had 2 different elotes which were excellent, the nachos (you really need to have the pork with them because it turns the flavor to heaven), poke bowl which tasted very fresh and clean and the short rib (which despite it being the most highly reviewed dish was very outshined by the pork). We attacked everything like savages and they forgot the pork for the nachos, but this turned out to be perfect because when they came with a side dish of pork we dumped all the leftovers and made our own garbage nachos. This place was right down the block from Hayward's a pub where my friend and I grabbed drinks and laughed til our abs hurt at the Bitches Brew comedy show. We were mesmerized by the soft glow of the purple fairy lights and the promise of Hawaiian food. The interior of the restaurant was luxe yet cozy, with leather booths. We sat outside, at a long, private bench. Truth be told, we were more captivated by the small plate offerings than the mains. We ordered a plate of the Garlic Aioli Elotes and the Traditional Salmon Poke to start. The poke also comes as large plates with mix ins. The elote was definitely our favorite dish of the meal. It was so flavorful. With the sourness of the lime, the umami of the aioli, and the cheesy parmesan, the flavor combination was so irresistible the bowl emptied at the blink of an eye. We also loved the salmon poke, which we chose to have with shoyu (light soy sauce) dressing. It was a apt portion for the $9 price tag. Sadly, we both ran into the bathroom shortly after returning home and we wonder if the poke was the culprit. For our main dish, we chose the Hawaiian staple: the Kalua pork plate. Though I doubt the Kalua pork here was cooked in a sand pit, it had all the trappings of smoky flavor, paired with moist meat juices oozing in every bite. I was amazed at how tender the pork tasted and what a bold flavor it had. The lomi lomi, rice, and macaroni salad it came with were much needed to soften the taste of the pork. I ordered a Saturn's Return for drinks and my boyfriend got the Brujeria, their halloween special cocktail. For food we decided on the Taro Chip Nachos, Salmon Poke (just the fish), and 1 each of the tacos. The food took some time but came all at once, just in time for me to order a second drink, Aperol Spritz. Taro Chip Nachos: 10/10 yum!!!! A light alternative to tortilla chips but still crunchy and crispy. The toppings are on the top most layers but we used the chips for the poke too which was a good pairing. Salmon Poke: 10/10 With ponzu sauce, this was really tasty and also fresh. I would get this again next time as a bowl! Seared Tuna Taco: 7/10 my least favorite of the three, it was good but nothing special Spicy Sweet Fried Chicken: 9/10 Although it could have a bigger crunch, this was very tasty and went well with the kimchi. Kahlua Pork: 10/10 perfectly juicy and flavorful, I'd try this again next time as a plate. Malasada: 10/10 a yummy dessert to end with, it was big and fluffy, enough to split between two. It comes with passionfruit and nutella. I visited Portland about 2 years ago and had Hawaiian-style food for the last time and have been looking for a place in NYC that makes Loco Moco plates ever since. Each table was reasonably spaced and had sanitizer on each seating area. Service was a little slow in terms of ordering, but understandable since there were 3 other groups being served. The waitress was very nice to check up on us frequently. The food came out timely once the order was placed. We ordered the Taro Chip Nachos to share and they did not disappoint. They were not soggy even at the end and loaded with toppings including avocado lomi lomi (tomato salmon salad(??) think of pico de gallo), sour cream, and queso. Loved it, would order again. The Loco Moco plate was exactly what I was looking for and the macaroni salad that came with it was also on point. The beef patty was how I remembered it, like a hamburger patty with gravy and a fried egg. My friend ordered the Kalua pork and she loved it. They had hot alcoholic beverages and regular cocktails that look very pretty, but I did not have an opportunity to order. By the end of dinner, I thought I was at Dick's last resort - a restaurant notoriously known for their off-color jokes, condescending, and insulting service. I had fun paying for rude services at Dick's, but not here at Sweet Talk....our waitress Deborah was all of Dick's without the fun. Came here for dinner with a group of 6 - all boys without their baby mamas, soooo we were out for a gooood time. We're a simple bunch. Happy as can be with a few beers, good food and good company. We were seated outdoors in a decorated hut. It gave me all the Hawaiian feels. The downward slope started when I asked the waitress for her preferred choice of the two cocktails. "Gin, baiju, passionfruit, simple syrup....." no romancing, just a recital of each and every ingredient. I blame the inability of my lack-of refined palate for not being able to taste the combined ingredients. I settled for the Konaloa's wraith. It came with a flower and it was delicious. We ordered multiple apps, truffle fries, taro chip nachos, marinated cucumbers, and elotes. The truffle fries paired with teriyaki sauce were heavenly! As the apps made their way out, I asked our waitress for eating plates and utensils, cause you know...restaurants provide that. BUT...she looked at me, dumbfounded and confused, as if I was asking for something out of the ordinary. I don't remember much about the entrees. They were filling. As we were wrapping up, we noticed the elotes never came. I told our waitress. She asked if I was sure. Before I had a chance to reply, she said "I swore you had it, I swore I saw it on the table" and continued to mumble under her breath as she walked off with our dirty plates. Plus, the place is absolutely beautiful; whoever was in charge of creative for the decor/lighting/etc did an amazing job. Their bowls are so good, all the ingredients are super fresh, and the cocktails are great. Having just left an event on 4th Avenue, I was ravenous and pulled out my cell phone to check for places that I have bookmarked on Yelp. Bar Tano was beautifully lit as candles were on the bar table as well as the dining tables. Larger lights were hanging from the ceiling. Earthy colored bathrooms with simple/ pleasant decor were present. Although it was a nice difference from the same signs that adorn every establishment, the painted "No Smoking" and "Employees Must Wash Hands" signs looked classic. It was also cool to see their outside dining space located on the side of the place...some people were observed to be eating outside tonight and enjoying the beautiful weather and ambiance. Bartender Daniel was incredibly courteous and friendly. He asked if this was my first time at Bar Tano and proceeded to explain items as well as engage me in a lovely conversation. I ordersd one of my favorite things to eat which is Spaghetti w/ Meatballs, however at Bar Tano it is Spaghetti El Pomodoro. The dish definitely satisfied my appetite! Our service was rough. Like, ordering appetizers and entrees, but getting everything at the same time, or parts of our order missing, or dessert taking 30 minutes and still not being ready. We came with an infant and a toddler. My toddler wanted a donut, and we obliged. But after waiting for over 25 minutes (in a nearly empty restaurant, at 8:30pm on a Tuesday night) we had to go. Our kids were over it, and so was I. Were we given any communication about this, we would have been fine. We would have told them not to bother, and gone home. I had to get up from my table to find our server who was literally just standing in the corner, out of our site. I told her we needed the check and had to go. That's when she informed me there was an issue with the dessert and they were working on it still. I told her we needed to leave and we no longer wanted it. She offered to package it up to go when it was ready, whenever that would be, and once again, I said we needed to go. My husband paid the bill as I loaded the kids in the car- the dessert was still on the check. My husband thought it was just a mistake and mentioned it- the server refused to take it off because they were trying to make it for us still. If a single donut in an empty restaurant cannot be produced in over 30 minutes, it's more than fair for a guest to cancel it. I don't care about the $10 or whatever- it's just the point of taking responsibility when you make a mistake. I tried to call the day after to speak to a manager about this, but there was no answer. I'm a pretty big fan of this place. I stop by every couple of months for brunch or dinner and I've always been really happy with service and the quality and quantity of the food. Most often when I come here I order one of two things. I've gotten the burger and the Tano salad with steak. The burger is always cooked to the desired temperature, is moist and very flavorful. You can either choose a side salad or homemade potato chips. Both re good choices. The tano salad is soooo yummy. No matter how much you say you love salads, you don't actually love salads. But this salad comes really close. It's a large portion of arugula mixed with walnuts, blue cheese, pears and a deliciously slightly sweet balsamic reduction. Now the crazy thing is that I don't like arugula. I don't like balsamic dressing and the thought of eating blue cheese makes me think about licking chunks of mold. I honestly have no idea why I ever even ordered this thing in the first place, but I'm so glad I did because it is wonderful. Something about the combination of all these ingredients makes for a seriously lovely salad. Another great thing about this place is desserts. Went here yesterday at around 6 pm. The short Spanish waitress with the wavy blonde tips at the ends of her hair is VERY RUDE and doesn't know what hospitality means. I asked her for her name and she didn't even answer me. When I came in, she ignored me then came back 7-10 minutes later to assist me. Then she told me to pick a table instead of ushering me to table. She then proceeds to 1). get an attitude when I politely ask for an extra glass for my guest and 2). gets an attitude when we ask questions about the menu. I live in the neighborhood and have visited Sweet Talk on multiple occasions, both prior to the re-design and since. I have experienced mixed situations each time, thus why I am giving it three stars, rather than the four I would have given it at times and one this last time. I went there two nights ago with another family, all of whom have been fans of the spot in previous visits. We had four adults and three kids, which we called in prior to going to ensure they could accommodate. We arrived at the end of Happy Hour and were talking excitedly about the specials that were listed on the sign outside, as well as on the HH menu. We were quickly seated, and though the restaurant was moderately busy, it was not packed. We were surprised then that we didn't see our waitress, Lorena, for at least another 20 minutes! We had three kids with us that were ready to eat and so when she did return, we gave her the total order at once. Two tots, one truffle fries right away please so the kids don't go bonkers. Four cocktails, three lemonades with grenadine. Two pork, one chicken katsu, one order of four tacos. Simple. We inquired about the Happy Hour specials, and Lorena told us it had ended. Of course, it had expired while we waited on someone to take our order for the last 20 minutes, but we decided not to debate the issue. We didn't see our drinks for another 20 minutes, and our "appetizers" came out 10 minutes later than that. So by the time we had anything on our table to drink, it was 40 minutes; by the time we had any food, it was almost an hour!! And sadly, none of the kids' drinks had grenadine in them (which, if you have kids, you know what a difference this can make). The fries and tots were quickly devoured and the next course took another 25 minutes. We didn't see Lorena at our table in the meantime until our food arrived, which another woman delivered. We wanted more drinks but the second lady's English was limited, so we had to wait again until the server re-appeared. Let me stop now and add that the ambience is good, the theme is strong, and the food is pretty tasty - on the pricey side for what you receive, but such is life in Park Slope. But our dinner took almost two hours for some tacos and fried chicken, which is completely unacceptable. The service was completely lacking during our visit. Drinks and food took entirely too long. And to top it off, the server had the nerve to add 20% gratuity to our bill without asking or informing us. We would have tipped her well despite the lack of attention, but to add it to our table of four meals and not even draw our attention to it was very bold and unprofessional!! All this that left us questioning if we will come back again, contrary to our previous experiences. read more

Not greasy at all, the coating was light and dusted with chili and spritzed with lemon. They serve it with an herbal dipping sauce that I was thinking Alex was going to drink like a shot. We then split the Funghi pizza without chorizo in respect to Alex's pescetarian lifestyle. The pie was great, very thin crispy crust with many styles of mushrooms and gooey cheese. A quick sprinkle of the chili flakes they brought us a bowl of and it was perfect. I would probably give the place 5 stars except for two issues. 1 the choice of music was not my favorite, I am not a hip hop fan and felt this wasnt really good dinner music. Stop trying to get the hipster crowd. 2nd issue was the somewhat distracted service. Our waitress while friendly was constantly vanishing behind a partition in the back. When Alex was served a cracked wine glass she tried for 10 minutes to get the waitresses attention and eventually brought the glass to the back and handed it to her. They did comp her second glass but having to chase down a server is not good form. I went for dinner with a friend and it really hit the spot. My carbonara were delicious, and my really liked her pasta as well. The salad was also good. I'm not sure how to feel about them offering only a selection of biodynamic red wines by the glass... Nothing against it, but I also don't have anything against other kinds of productions. In any case, mine was very good. I want to check out their brunch one of these days and I'll update the review. read more
