Wow! They had such a huge selection that I didn't even know where to start and everything made my mouth water. I bought a rainbow cookie bar and their last piece of brookie. I am a tough critic of brownies and very particular abt them. This one HIT.THE.SPOT! I never forget a good brownie spot. I could do without that dabble of chocolate frosting on top that holds the mini chocolate chip cookie in place but the brookie itself....wow. I knew I had to snag the last piece on display. Perfect crunchy fresh tasting edge and the middle was the perfect consistency of gooeyness and had a rich chocolate bite!! I was disappointed in the rainbow cookie bar though because the cake portion was dry :T The rest of their display looks pretty awesome and peaked my interest to want to try more of their items. I used to love this place. Fabulous cookies, cakes and the best thing they had--raspberry crumb squares. Light small and just the right proportion of raspberry to crumb. The cookies were still good (not as good as before, almost tastes like the are using crisco instead of butter) but the raspberry squares, are no longer good. Someone no longer works there who made them bc the raspberry squares today were gigantic, mostly crumb, very little raspberry and lacked flavor. With so many bakeries on Long Island to choose from Sweet Surrender is a standout for me. Why is this? Two different reasons, one they make amazing rainbow cookies (which I am eating while writing this review) and secondly they make canoli cream chocolate chip cookie sandwiches. These are to die for and an absolute must have. The bakery itself is actually know for something called a crannoli which is a canoli/crossiant/doughnut all in one, but to this day I still haven't tried one. Definitely on my list of top bakeries! Glad I don't live close by or I'd be stuffing my face with baked goods everyday. read more

While living in the Island Trees area for more than 10 years, I never stepped foot into Sweet Surrender Bakery until I more recently needed a special occasion cake for an event we were planning for our daughter and was taken aback by the amazing customer service I received the minute I walked in door - particularly one of its staff members, Kathleen. I explained the type of occasion, cake and design I was seeking and Kathleen worked with me according to my budget and walked me through different options, providing great advice in the process. During each interaction I had with her leading up to my 13 year-old daughter's big day, she was just as friendly - even more so- than the time before and so were the other staff as well as the owner. Since I couldn't pick up the cake the day of our event, another member of my family picked it up for us that morning so my my daughter, husband and I never saw it until it was presented during the reception. We were amazed by how beautiful the cake turned out. Kathleen and the decorator worked collaboratively to bring our vision for our daughter's special event to life based on her beach/nautical theme with great detail. Not only did the cake look beautiful while fitting within our budget but it tasted delicious, receiving compliments from friends and family. If i could i would give this place Negative numbers. Horrible new owner treats long term customers like garbage! I been buying special order birthday cakes from this place for over 20 years. This new owner is a joke! He hides behind the title manager. He introduces himself as a manager and how he has to follow protocols when there is a problem. He even has the women lie for him behind the counter saying he is the manager. The man is a Joke! I spent a lot of money on a birthday cake again. The butter cream was shiney, greasy and left a film on metal utensils and mouth. The cake looked like a mess on the outside. I was truly embarrassed by this at my party. He told me when i saw the problem i should have brought the cake back right away. So in the middle of my party i should drop everything and ruin the party some more to run to a liar. I spoke with the "manager" that evening on phone. I learned the next day when he was not helping me and driving my anxiety up after ruining my daughter's birthday cake and had her almost in tears that day. That i demanded to speak to the owner and that's when he said he was. I fought with this man for a while. Telling me i should be quiet in his place of businesses so other clients could not hear. All i wanted was my money back for a cake that ended up in garbage. And i brought a piece like he asked and pics for proof. He only wanted to give me some money back and store credit. I said absolutely not and proceeded to fight with him. Telling me over again to be quiet. I said he might not know anything about baking but he as the owner had to take responsibility of his baker screwing things up. Finally over and over of standing up for myself he gave me my money back. No one should ever have to go through that. I will never be returning while this man owns this place. I feel bad for the women working behind the counter, they were all wonderful. This man is destroying this place. I would say stay away from special order cakes unless u want your party ruined. I could only imagine if this was a wedding cake. How much he could have ruined someone's wedding day. Helen was a great owner. Wish she was still there. Even though I had one problem in the last. So my bridal shower was yesterday and everything was beautiful until I saw my cake.... My mother in law ordered my cake in June and spoke to the baker requesting the cake. They said they could do it no problem. When she went to pick it up they didn't have the cake ready. After waiting they brought out a cake....but nothing like what we asked for Looking at the cake on the right i can see they put a white boarder then realized omg it's supposed to be blue and put blue on top. The flowers were supposed to be gel they just put some prop on the corner... the dress should be textured and it's put together by two pieces of fondant. I'm writing this so prevent brides from going through this.... We've been going here for years for sheet cakes for birthdays. This time we cut the cake at my kids party and it was kind of tough getting through the bottom layer. Once I ate it I realized the top layer was fine, but the bottom one was very dry and hard. Obviously I had to serve it since this is the cake I had. I called the next morning to let them know how it was. I got a call back from the owner the next day who asked what was wrong and then essentially completely described how they changed things 3 months ago and add a simple syrup to the cakes and it couldn't possibly be dry. I said well then it definitely wasn't on this part of the cake because it was dry. He then said, I'm not going to argue with you, what do you want me to do? Just a shocking response honestly. I said I don't want you to do anything I just wanted to let you know. Would it have been nice if he offered like a $10 voucher for something? Sure. But at this rate I don't want to go back there with that attitude anyway. I figured I'd make the call and not give a bad review because people deserve the right to make things better. But when you deny it could possibly be the way it was, and then act so rude, a bad review happens and I'll make sure myself and others don't go there again. This was like a bj's cake with a higher price tag. I'll just save that extra $40 and go to bj's next time. read more

If I could give a lower review I would. After researching bakeries I settled on this one. I looked at their galleries and read their reviews and initially felt comfortable. I sent multiple images for a special 40th birthday custom cake and made it clear that I wanted the cake to look as close to the images as possible. I gave creative leeway in the placement but not the design. Fast forward to the day I picked up the cake and the disappointment was overwhelming so much so that I almost bought a generic cake. It was sloppily made and looked like the person just gave up or ran out of time. I reached out about discussing a partial refund or something. And was told (after spending $590) that they were comfortable giving back $25. I heard they have new owners but a word to the wise would be to stay far away and go someplace else that may charge more but would treat you like a valued customer. read more

Helen was the one who I spoke to over the phone. I was able to order the cake and what I received went above and beyond my expectations! The cake was perfection and exactly what I wanted. Helen was so creative in helping me design this cake. She offered suggestions and was so helpful. The price of the cake was very reasonable. The cake tasted fresh and delicious! First time ordering from this bakery for Easter. They had plenty of staff assisting customers. The young lady that helped me with my order greeted me warmly. I asked for suggestions on what to order and she told me they are known for their rainbow cookies. They had rainbow cake and rainbow crumb cake as well. I ordered an assortment of cookies and a strawberry shortcake. Everything tasted fresh and was delicious! The rainbow cookies were exceptional! The bakery looked clean, stocked with a wide variety of baked goods. I will definitely return to this bakery and try there other baked goods'! read more

This was a recommendation in Yelp, and I figured I'd check it out, especially so since they have their own unique product, the crannoli. Though I'm not necessarily a cannoli guy, I'm up for trying anything if it's innovative - and even moreso if it's good! At any rate, here is the rather inconsistent tale of the tape: Boston Cream Doughnut Intriguingly square in shape, it has a decent chocolate topping, but where it really shines is in the filling. A very good, satisfyingly flavorful vanilla custard with the right texture. What holds this doughnut back from true greatness is the doughnut itself. It has a slightly firm texture that doesn't quite fit with the good chocolate topping and the excellent filling. Brownie Topped with a thin layer of fudge and mini chocolate chips, the brownie itself is simply not that chocolaty. You take a bite and the fudge topping dissipates, and with it most of the chocolate flavor. Bewildered, you take another (this time tentative) bite, which simply affirms your initial impression. As good as it looks, where oh where is the chocolate? They do offer another version, which contains walnuts. Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup Doughnut A standard chocolate cake doughnut with peanut butter frosting and a real Reese's peanut butter cup quartered and appetizingly stuck into the frosting. Well, the doughnut is not chocolatey enough, and the peanut butter frosting is more sweet than peanut buttery. Disappointed! Chocolate Peanut Butter Pie Essentially the same brownie as above, but containing mini peanut butter chips, topped with a layer of peanut butter, then ganache. There is a smattering of those same peanut butter mini chips atop the ganache, with the circumference of the whole 7" diameter pie ringed with a chocolate buttercream. The buttercream is decently chocolatey. The peanut butter layer is not sweet, a decision I support, and I would like to know which brand they use - as it's rather good for that straight up (slightly salty) peanut butter flavor. Unfortunately, as aforementioned the brownie is the same as their regular one - and though the fudgy texture is there, the expected/commensurate chocolate flavor is not. Eaten together, the flavors blend nicely, and perhaps it's here that the lack of chocolate flavor from the brownie stands out. Crannoli Sweet Sensation's signature creation has a great look, and is rather large. To me it set out what it meant to do, and as such to me it was just ok. I'm not a fan of cannoli in general, but if you are you may well like this innovative confective culinary creation. I was a little disappointed in the selection, in that there is no longer a choice in the selection of crannoli flavor. They used to have 11 different flavors, and I was set on checking out at least two or three of them (Chocolate Peanut Butter, Nutella, and Cappuccino). However, the woman working the counter told me that they only had the regular one available. Sigh. Éclair Mini Similar to my impression of the Boston Cream, the éclair has a excellent custard, but the shell is just there, and the chocolate on top is somewhat lacking. I'd say that the custard alone carries the éclair through . . . Key Lime Tart A rather tasteless tart shell with a lemon colored lime custard, topped with a green lime flavored mousse, topped with a very tart lime wedge. The mousse had a light but decently tart flavor, which was outpaced only by the tartness factor of the custard below. Nothing, however, was more tart than the actual lime wedge on top! Still, while not being overtly tart, it was enough as such to enjoy this citrusy confection. Marble Muffin I had this both heated, and not. I was struck by and appreciated its freshness on the half I ate at room temp . . . ! Still, there wasn't much marbling (see my picture), but I guess that was the (bad) luck of the draw. While I was disappointed that Sweet Surrender didn't have the other 10 varieties of crannoli, I applaud them for their innovation nonetheless. I asked what they use in the way of shortening, and the answer was both butter and oil, depending on the the baked good. I didn't probe further, but may do so on a subsequent visit. Generally I'd say that this bakery would rise to the level of greatness if they took their chocolate game to the level it should be . . . . In combination with the other elements of their baked goods, such would make them a dangerously tasty entry in the bake shop game. read more
