I have been a client of this studio since 2011, and have received most of my sugaring and esthetician services directly from Christina. I have primarily used sugaring for my hair removal services because I have found it more comfortable to go through when compared to the use of hot wax. I have stayed with Christina for so many years because she is so attentive during the sessions, as well as very thorough. I have seen her grow her studio from a tiny space with few retail offerings to a larger spa-like atmosphere offering a variety of services in addition to just sugaring. The studio is exceptionally clean, and Christina has always been very conscious of this aspect, particularly around the pandemic restrictions we all operated under for several years. Christina and her staff are very present to clients and strive to offer extras - flavored waters, hot teas, cups of snacks, soft lighting and music - that make each visit seem like a small spa escape. They make sure clients are aware of recommendations for post-sugaring care and offer products from their own stock for purchase. All the products carried at the studio are high quality, all natural products that Christina and her staff have used and can confidently recommend. Went here for the first time today for a 'Sweet Essentials' pedi with Vandy. She did an amazing job. She was kind, funny, and professional. She was efficient and applied the perfect pressure and technique during the trimming, pumice scrub and massage. She's everything you would hope for in a nail specialist! The ambience is very zen meets boutique. I felt whisked away to a resort, even though it's on a busy city street. The receptionist was friendly and pleasant. Loved the private room for my pedi. first off I love getting my sugaring done here. I've never had a problem. I tried a facial for the first time and was surprised at how much it ended up being with all the "add-ons" and product recommendations that they force on you. I felt there was little to no communication about the extra costs and they were constantly trying to add things to increase how much I paid. What a great find! Never been sugared but a historical waxer...I moved down here post baby and non bikini season so...wasn't really thinking about that business but now it's the pool several times a week! Nair is just awful but definitely am not close enough with anyone down here to say "hey! who rips all the hair out of your vag?!" So as usual, Yelp led me in the right direction. I arrived and the receptionist didn't seem to know who I was or what I wanted (I had an appointment and the place was empty) but luckily my therapist came out almost immediately and was so delightful and pleasant that I forgot about the less than enthusiastic welcome. I find the pricing competitive with waxing (at least in NJ) and yes, some parts hurt but honestly, some other parts I did not even feel. The best thing is that I was maybe a little red leaving, but by the time I got home, not red, no bumpies...nothing. I am so, so pleased and this will be my go to from now on! My initial sugaring service: 5 stars! Perfection! My second sugaring service: 0 stars. Although I used the same sugarist as before, she did not sanitize either my body or herself (nor did she glove) before sugaring. Within hours after sugaring, I developed dozens of whitehead-like skin infections/irritations. I am sure this is from the lack of cleaning my skin and the lack of cleaning her bare hands before sugaring. Sugaring may be sterile, but humans are not. After that second experience, I went back for a third time. My third sugaring experience: 0 stars. Same therapist as before but she ran about 30 minutes late because she was moving apartments and couldn't find parking to get to work on time. Although she did sanitize and use gloves after I asked her to, she was very rushed (due to her own tardiness) and wasn't thorough with my sugaring. I wanted to love this place, but after two bad experiences, I won't be back. They do have an excellent selection of products in their boutique. read more

I've written other positive reviews about waxing places, but I didn't know what I was missing until Sweet 185. As an avid 'hard' waxer for four years, I was intrigued by the sugaring technique and decided to try it out. Upon entering Sweet, the receptionist was warm, friendly and immediately put me at ease. The front shop is beyond adorable; their all-natural products are nestled into tiny nooks around the shop. While I filled out my client form, I sipped citrus flavored water and lounged in an overstuffed chair. I was relieved to find that the sugaring room itself was completely private (and mention impeccably decorated). I've been in other waxing salons where the walls do not touch the ceiling, ensuring that anyone can hear your entire waxing session and vise versa. Sweet gives you a linen privacy skirt to put on before your treatment. While I'm not in any way prudish, the privacy skirt allowed me to completely relax and allow my girl to do what she had to do without me having to worry about it. Other salons have had me completely spread eagle and some actually had me actively 'help' with the waxing process. I always found this off-putting at other salons as I don't believe bikini waxing should be approached as a team sport. The sugaring itself was so much easier on my lady parts than hard wax. Each client gets a new ball of sugar that is used for the whole treatment. The ball itself is cool to the touch and while other brands of wax claim to "not pull on skin" sugaring actually doesn't. The waxing is continuous; pulling a small amount out at each time which makes the entire process faster than normal waxing (you'll never feel anxious right before they 'pull' ever again). My girl was so hilarious and fun to talk to, the whole process passed very quickly. After the treatment, I bought some delicious body lotion to pamper myself in between my sugaring appointments. To my delight Sweet also threw in a natural sea sponge for me to try at no charge! Sweet 185 is the best at what they do and I can't imagine going anywhere else in Charleston. read more

I've just had my first sugaring experience at Sweet 185 yesterday, and I am one satisfied customer! I had never even waxed before trying sugaring, but I had met the shop owner, Christina, beforehand, and she had been so pleasant and explanatory of the process and procedure that I went for it. The staff is very welcoming, and the waiting area and studio are gorgeously decorated. Water and snacks are available while you're waiting in the 'lounge' area, which shares its space with some oxygen therapy tanks. I was only waiting a few minutes before Christina lead me to the private sugaring studio (completely private/enclosed), and provided me with a linen robe/skirt for me to wear and cover my bottom half. They also give each person an organic lollipop (yes!), which I enjoyed while getting sugared. The entire full brazilian sugaring treatment lasted only as long as the lollipop - about 25-30 minutes - so that was a pleasant surprise. I was also surprised and relieved that the sugaring itself did not hurt nearly as much as I would have thought it did. Some areas and some people are more sensitive than others, but for me, this process was WELL worth it over shaving (my skin irritates very easily). Christina made me feel comfortable the entire time, and made sure to clean me up completely after the process - no residue, etc. She even wrote an exfoliation RX for me to take home. I'd recommend this to anyone who already waxes or has been too scared to try! The organic boutique storefront is also absolutely adorable, and carries a ton of local and organic products for bath, aromatherapy, skin care, etc - even some lingerie! I needed an eyebrow wax BADLY and decided to try the sugaring at Sweet 185. I couldn't be happier! The salon is VERY cute, very clean, fun, and unpretentious. I have been to Sweet 185 a couple of times for sugaring because it is a convenient location for me. Each time I have had to wait about 10 or so minutes after my appointment time, but just brushed it off. This past appointment I waited 25 minutes past my appointment time (I arrived a few minutes early) for an appointment that took 15 minutes to complete. Christina is wonderful at sugaring and I absolutely love going to her, but I don't think I'll be going back because I expect them to value the appointment time we agree on. This past time it seemed like they double-booked, but waiting that long is just a waste of my time especially for the price I pay. For my surprise lingerie shower, one of my friends gave me a gift certificate to Sweet 185. Immediately, all the girls at the gathering started gushing about the wonderful world of sugaring. I'd heard of it, but I admit, I didn't fully understand what it was all about. With my weddingmoon adventure coming up, I'd planned on some waxing, but I decided to go to Sweet 185 for some sugaring instead. My friend had recommended Jen, but she was booked up and instead I scheduled an appointment for "The Sphinx" with Rachel. I showed up a little early and was greeted by a friendly receptionist who showed me to the cozy waiting area. She offered fresh lemon water and some snacks, none of which I actually had but still thought it was a very nice touch. Not knowing what to expect when I walked in the door, I immediately felt very welcomed and comfortable. After only a couple minutes of waiting, Rachel came to get me and took me into a private room where she introduced herself and told me about her background. I immediately felt as ease as she described the entire sugaring process, how it worked, and what to expect. She didn't hesitate to answer any of my questions, and offered to stop or limit the treatment the second I felt discomfort or unease. Just the option of knowing that I could cut and run if I didn't like it was reassuring in itself! I'll spare the hairy details (har har), but just say that it wasn't a bad experience, and the results were wonderful! The sugaring did not hurt nearly as bad as I thought, nor did it take as long. I also liked the fact that it was all natural. Rachel was very sweet, and made the situation as comfortable as it could be. Thank goodness I waited to arrive at this place before buying the Yelp deal, because I arrived at 5:05 for a 5:30 appointment that I booked via their reservation email and was told that my slot was given up to someone else because I didn't provide phone number or credit card. (Now walking back to work - which I left early for this - in the rain.) They were not transparent about this requirement for booking. We had been back and fourth twice via email (4 emails), and they waited until 9:30am today to email me and say they needed credit card or phone number to secure the reservation. At that time, I am working with limited access to personal email. They did email again shortly after 2pm however I am still at work at that time and still have limited access to personal email. Totally unacceptable. Given that this isn't the only place that offers sugaring (aka I can easily go somewhere else), shouldn't it be especially important to exercise good customer service? ESPECIALLY for new clients? If I had been pleased with my service today, I would have become a returning client. Because of this establishment's lack of consideration, I will NOT be returning. There's more to being a business owner and therapist than the actual service provided, which includes communication with clients. Without more direct communication and upfront transparency about their policy (or policies), they're going to continue to lose people. The girl sitting at the front desk was super sweet and professional, and the only positive part of this experience (if I can even say that), so I made sure she knew that I was not upset with her - I'm truly disappointed in the policy and the lack of communication from the establishment. read more

I used to go here frequently, but it seems there's been a lot of turnover there with their aestheticians and staff. Recently, I've found the front desk staff less than friendly, and you have to jump through hoops to book an appointment. As soon as you find someone you like there and want to go back to, they leave. That speaks volumes right there, as the customers aren't the only ones who seem disgruntled. I've found them less than honest (they'll tell you they're so booked that you have to wait weeks for an appointment, when it turns out there's simply no one there who performs that service currently). They're definitely overpriced for what they offer. And on top of this, they require a credit card before you book. I've never had a salon do that before (and I've been to a lot of spas and salons). Personally, I'll bring my business elsewhere from here on. read more

This is a review for customer service, or rather lack thereof. My husband bought a Groupon for me for Valentine's Day. As you know if you use Groupon, the original gift-giver is who gets the emails indicating when a deal they have purchased is about to expire. My husband never got an email (which is obviously Groupon's fault), but even if he had, this particular Groupon was good only for 4 months from the date of purchase. I have never seen a Groupon that was good for less than 6 months. When I was ready to book the appointment, I called him at work to get the Groupon number and he realized it had expired 5 days prior. He felt so bad because I have been working really hard and really needed these treatments, and because it was his gift to me. The management refused to budge on the policy that it was expired and that he could only get the value of what he paid. I understand that is what the language of the Groupon clearly states. The point is that if a business is using this service, clearly they are trying to attract new customers, especially since this deal was for new customers only. When you give a very short window of time to redeem the Groupon, and as others have stated, make it hard to get appointments during that window, and then refuse to honor the deal when it was only 5 days since the expiration, you aren't going to attract OR keep customers. We may be lowly Grouponers now, as both my husband and I are in graduate school, but once we are in our careers we will be exactly the kind of loyal, long-term customers vwith plenty of money to spend and who WOULD sustain your business, if you deserved it. read more

I bought a Groupon for a 60 minute facial and eye treatment which I was very excited about. When calling to make an appointment I had to leave a credit card number and was told if I cancelled less than 24 hours from my appointment I would be charged. I don't really appreciate this as we all know that things come up and we can't help having to cancel an appointment. My facial was wonderful, but what I did not appreciate is when I was asked about my skincare routine and what products I use, I felt judged. I didn't ask for an opinion of what I use. If I did, than I would have understood. I was told that the product I use is not reputable nor would she ever recommend it to a client. I love my skincare products and feel like my skin has greatly improved since using them. It made me uncomfortable and I didn't appreciate feeling this way when I just wanted to relax. I'd give this place 3 and a half stars if I could. The atmosphere is nice, the staff are friendly, and the prices are fair. They get 1/2 a star off for having a kind of confusing pricing for the bikini area sugaring options (the Pheonix is more expensive than the Brazilian) and I was upgraded to the Phoenix upon talking with Christina (my Sugarist. Is that a word? Sugarist? My Sugar Technician? Sugar Mama? Anyway), not realizing it would cost more than the Brazilian I was originally quoted for. And Christina costs more, because she's their Master Sugar Wizard. They get another star off because Christina did not heed my three separate requests to rip off the hair in shorter strips (which would hurt less, obviously). She would do maybe one or two short strips, but only when she felt it was necessary. The rest of the time, it was big long strips, which hurt a lot. Granted, I am a delicate flower, with a very low tolerance for pain, and this was essentially like my first time getting sugared all over again, because it had been so long. But even so, I don't blame her for how much it hurt except that I kept asking her to do it in shorter strips, and she wouldn't. If you have been waxing or sugaring many times already, and/or you have a very high threshold for pain, you will probably have no problems. For me, it just felt like she was doing the long strips to make it go faster. Oh! And she missed about ten hairs, which I had to tweeze later myself. At the place I go to in Seattle, they do that for you, so that you don't have to clean up those stray hairs yourself afterward. read more

I have had great experiences being sugared here and the studio is gorgeous and clean and fresh. I love the products here and Jen is the sweetest! However, the cancellation policy is 24 hrs and you will be charged for the full amount of the service if you don't give them enough notice. Obviously this is reasonable for them to charge you if you don't show up! However, being charged for a 80 dollar service and being sassed off by the owner is unreasonable. I will continue to sugar but I will continue to do it somewhere where the staff isn't quite as snippy. read more

I was really excited when I bought a groupon for a bikini wax, without it I would not have tried this place due to pricing. A regular bikini wax is $40 and I see on their site they have an extended bikini wax for more, whatever that is. The process hurt but the results lasted a long time. I wouldn't get another wax here b/c of the price and how little of the bikini area is removed. Also, when I called ahead I mentioned my groupon and even gave the redemption code over the phone but my tech had no clue about it and the girl up front told me I had $16 to pay when I was done. The day of they called asking me to come earlier and I said I could maybe be there 15 minutes early. Then when I wasn't there right at the 15 minute mark of early, they called wondering where I was. This review is definitely quite different than all the others. I found Sweet 185 while looking through Yelp for a good waxing place (I was leaving for my wedding and honeymoon and obviously wanted to be smooth everywhere...) when I came across Sweet 185. I figured I'd try it out since the reviews were all quite high. I am new to the Charleston area, so it took me a while to find the place. The storefront is so small, it's definitely easy to miss. I parked in a not-so-nice section of town because there wasn't any parking nearby. Not a great way to start out, but when I went inside, everyone was super-friendly and the atmosphere was relaxing. My sugarist was very kind and explained the process. She gave me a lollipop to "distract" me during the sugaring. Let's just say I almost choked on that lollipop! Obviously other people have a higher pain tolerance than me because I went through the ROOF. It hurt SO badly...probably one of the most painful experiences I've ever gone through (and I have tattoos and had piercings). I'd rather get another tattoo while sitting on pins than go through that pain again. After she removed the hair down there, I was beyond impressed with how smooth it was. I later felt very comfortable in my bikini and on my wedding night. It was a worthy investment....until the hair grew back...and quick. I was told it would take about a month for my hair to grow back. It came back in LESS THAN A WEEK. I have a least a quarter inch of hair down there already... Not impressed. On top of it, I got my eyebrows sugared for the first time thinking that it would be better than getting them waxed at the not-so-clean nail salons around town. I broke out terribly all over my eyebrows and face. It was PAINFUL. This happened two days before my wedding, so you can imagine my dismay and concern. I called, the lady told me to put warm salt water on my face. It stung, and the bumps became worse. Because I was already out of town for my wedding, there was no way I could go back to them like they suggested. Fortunately, the bumps did go away in time for the wedding, but I still have one pesky bump under my eyebrow that is extremely painful to this day. I won't be back, unfortunately. I liked the instant results, but the bumps on my face and the hair growing back (even on my eyebrows, too!) so soon made me really disappointed, especially for the price. When I get an eyebrow wax, the hair stays gone longer. Oh well. read more

I just moved to Charleston, and this was my first day spa/salon experience. I was warmly welcomed and invited into a very comfortable back room to fill out paperwork. I was offered a glass of citrus infused water and a mixed nut/healthy snack medley while I waited to be taken in for my mani/pedi. I'm usually not into a lot of fluff, I just want to get in and out and have my nails looking and feeling great. Post moving over 1000 miles, however, I welcomed all of the special attention, the soft lighting, and the overall very soothing ambiance. I was promptly greeted by the aesthetician, Vandy. She is beautiful in a natural, non-intimidating way, clean cut and warm, but not over the top "in your face," just soft and welcoming. She took me into my own private room for the service. It was a delightful experience not having yapping nail techs all about. I sat on basically my own little couch which was incredibly comfortable and my feet soaked in a beautiful copper bowl. Vandy should consider massage as well, as she has an excellent touch.....not too gentle, not too rough....firm but sensitive to the client's needs/wants, pressure points, etc. After starting to file a nail, she would ask halfway through if that was the shape I wanted, before going any further. She frequently asked me how the temperature of the water was, and if the post pedi or mani massages were too deep or not. She was very in tune with my needs. The room was immaculate and I felt like royalty as more than twice other employees came in and asked if I cared for a cup of tea or anything to eat. Vandy is confident, professional and competent and again, very aware of her clients needs. She also let me stay right on my mini-sofa while she did my manicure, so I didn't have move while my toes dried. She was personable, but not a busy body and very conscientious about cleanliness and sanitation. She also informed me of special deals being offered and options for keeping my own files, buffers, etc...there on site, so I know it's only used for me. They use only disposable and organic products and have an interesting selection of colors from which to choose. Overall, my experience was beyond decadent and I thought very reasonably priced. Every person there, (there must have been 5 or 6 in my 1.5 hours there) made a special effort to greet me with genuine smiles and salutations. I would HIGHLY recommend anyone go here to this very conveniently located and competitively priced establishment for a mani-pedi. The space is well, but softly lit, well decorated and smells fresh and clean, but not fruity, too perfumy or antiseptic. It has a perfect din. The staff does make an effort to "upsell," their products and merchandise, (as they should,) but in an VERY subtly suggestive, but non-intrusive way. From my first YELP inquiry for an appointment and promptly returned email, to the follow up phone call to schedule the appointment, to the actual service and upon leaving the door being held open for me to be escorted out as if I were in someone's home, my experience was AAA, top notch, da bomb! A trip to Sweet 185 was one of the highlights of my recent weekend in Charleston. I had a 30 min facial with the North-South add on. I highly recommend it for a relaxing spa experience! Christina communicated everything clearly so I knew what to expect. She's very knowledgable about the products they use and carry in the shop.
