It may seem strange to start a review of one business by referencing another, but I'm a huge fan of See's Candies, with their free piece of chocolate whenever you visit, but their stores are only on the west coast (and chocolate doesn't taste the same when it's shipped to you in a refrigerated truck). This means that local confectioner Sweenor's and I have become very very good friends. If only they gave free samples - but not going that extra step isn't worth subtracting a star. I like chocolate - dark, milk, semisweet, you name it - chocolate, basic chocolate. Simply put, Sweenor's is the best local vendor I've found in RI. The Garden City shop is small but well-stocked, with high quality and delicious basic candies. Basic includes a wide variety of solid chocolate in various shapes, sizes, and packaging, bark, nuts and fruits coated in chocolate, and chocolates with creamy fillings as opposed to those fancy "designer chocolates the almost look extruded from a cookie press and fancied up so they're too pretty to eat. This is the kind of chocolate I want: not overly sweet, not overly bitter (with dark chocolate that can be a risk), with a good ratio of chocolate to nuts. This shop is small and gets crowded during the holidays. The staff move as quickly as they can in a place where customers select individual items from a long counter as well as buying pre-packaged offerings. Gift wrapping also takes time so be thoughtful about requesting it when the shop is busy. Personal favorites here? The chocolate covered malted milk balls, and the bridge mix. Sweenor's actually ties with See's for my favorite chocolate treat from any place (and from Hershey's - but these are so many levels better!) dark chocolate almonds. You can tell the quality of the product when you're eating just chocolate and almond (no caramel), and Sweenor's gets my vote for very high quality! read more

There's something special about coming for a visit to Sweenor's that just feels like nostalgia. I remember going to Sweenor's as a kid with my grandma, amazed at the selection feeling like I was in a store from Willy Wonka. Every time visiting here is a chance to try something different or experience an upgrade of something classic, like a peanut butter cup or a turtle or just a caramel filled chocolate. All of the chocolate here is pure bliss in comparison to mass produced stuff, and well worth the elevated price. You can build your own box by picking out chocolate from the glass cases, which is priced by weight. Some special pieces are sold by the piece (e.g truffles). They also sometimes have non-chocolate things like taffy, hard candy, etc but in my experience this is not the main focus of their store and not always a guarantee for availability. They also sometimes (usually?) sell an assortment of fudge which is amazing. Super rich and decadent, you really only need to buy a small amount to indulge. The boxed chocolates and truffles make for an awesome gift. Also/especially great as a gift to yourself! read more

I really do love this place. I try to stay away because everything is just too too good. I stopped in because I wanted a little something for my daughter's 40th birthday. I was looking for just a little something to add on to her gift and make it special. I walked in and didn't even have a chance to look around this time. The sales person asked if she could help me and I told her I was looking for something for her birthday. She showed me a pop that was chocolate and said some thing like birthday on it. And then she showed me the other end of the price range which was a basket with one of those pops in it and other candies. I chose the basket and I was in and out of the store in under five minutes. So, a week later, I tried to call for a tracking number, to get nothing but an answering machine, both phone numbers the 800 number as well as their regular number. Service good enough, it's the quality of the chocolates that I'm disappointed in. The cheap dark chocolates from a supermarket are better tasting. Nowhere near the taste of larger brands like Mrs Sees chocolates (found on the west coast) and also less expensive. (you pay for shipping, but it's worth it) Cute store, it's too bad. One of my favorite chocolate shops ever. Every time there's a birthday, we stop here to grab some gifts for the lucky person. They even wrap the boxes for you and tie it with a bow. The chocolates and candies were always fresh and melts right in your mouth. It's a small shop in the busy Garden City plaza but there's plenty of parking available. I'd like to thank my husband for introducing this place to me. I lived in Cranston for over twenty years and never went there until a few years ago. This is Rhode Island's largest chocolate maker. They serve fudge, chocolate, and other sweets. It's family owned and being operated by the fourth generation. Their chocolates are fresh and the ingredients are top notch. Whenever I'm in town, this is one of the places I visit to get my chocolate fix. I always get a milk chocolate caramel or almond bar and a chocolate covered pretzel! Okay so let me start by saying sweenors DOES have some of the best tasting chocolate I have ever had. I especially love their milk chocolate covered nuts and fruit. I'm not much of a truffle person. They innovated and adapted during the covid pandemic by offering same day curbside pickup as well as delivery (during closure early in pandemic). The reason for the low star review is because on three different occasions now, myself and members of my family have purchased their boxed chocolate covered raisins only to discover that despite being labeled as such, were chocolate covered peanuts. We have a toddler in the family who is highly allergic to peanuts and even if his parents eat a peanut he is at risk. This was pretty alarming for the parents who immediately brought it to the clerks attention after discovering the peanuts 5 min after purchasing. While the clerk was apologetic, they barely said thank you and offered nothing to make amends. Weeks later, I purchased another box of choc covered raisins as a Christmas gift via online pickup. It was a mix of peanuts and raisins! Again, we informed the business and again we're met with sorry. Peanuts are a life threatening allergy and instead of removing the items from their shelves they continuing selling the questionable batch. Shame on sweenors. We Spend a lot of money there for every special occasion and will be thinking twice about that in the future. They are sacrificing a life threatening allergy on their customers over profit! This is a local RI company that has been selling chocolate in the state for multiple family generations. Their store in the Garden City plaza is filled with all of their confections that you can buy by the box or individually. I've been on a quest recently to find a very good peanut brittle and, so far, Sweenor's has been the best. I prefer a brittle that is heavy on peanuts and lighter on the brittle, which is exactly how Sweenor's makes it. I wish they sold the brittle by the piece rather than in a box only. I have had their other chocolates, though, which I don't like as much as their brittle, which is the reason for the 3 stars. read more

I went in Sweenor's again for a special treat - a box of assorted chocolates. I hope I will never lose the sense of giddiness as I am able to gaze upon chocolate after chocolate candies and pick all the ones that look appealing. This is a dangerous thrill though, as it can result in much chocolate consumption! The employees here are so friendly and helpful. During the holidays sometimes the line is long but seems to move at a decent pace. When I was last in for Easter I was told they were closing this store for remodeling.
