They have clothes upstairs and shoes downstairs along with a variety of just about anything. They've kept up with trends, quality merch too. We spent a good 30-45 minutes wandering around. We grabbed some souvenirs and snacks. The staff at the registers were friendly too. I put my stuff on the counter. I had a dumpster fire sticker. The cashier smiled and laughed at it. "Swain's Has Everything!" That's the motto that burned in my brain from when I lived in Port Angeles. This store sits at the heart of this Pacific Northwest community and provides the kinds of goods needed by the citizens here. They've been doing this for a long time and have survived the onslaught of stores such as Walmart and Costco that have located nearby. The secret of their success is, IMHO, that they really cater to their customers with excellent service staff located throughout the store. They have the right products at the right prices. There is one thing Swain's does not have: Self-checkout. You get a live, friendly and helpful person to ring up your purchases. And of course, they always keep their popcorn machine running up front. I decided to visit for the first time here. I have been trying to stop supporting the large retailers and shop smallers and local, so when I needed paint, I decided to go here over SW or Home Depot. I honestly did not leave having had a great experience. First off, the employees here are not very nice. PA is littered with an amazing group of people, but this place should not be considered representative of anything PA. I struggled to find the paint dept. When I did, no one was behind the desk, but an employee named Paul walked up to help me. He scanned my sample item and got to work. a co-worker was within hearing distance of my order, and he was joking around with Paul. I walked around the nearby rows seeing what all they had, not ever being out if earshot incase they said an order was done. When I did, I guess Paul left, and a new person and filled in for him. I kept expecting someone to flag me down and say your paint is ready as they had been doing to others. I finally saw a lonely quart there. I asked the coworker who was there when I first got there if this was my order. He said I dont know. I asked him if it was the one Paul did. He said I guess. He was pretty rude about it. He had a beard and was probably about 40. I just pulled out my original sample and compared, and thought it was a little off, but whatever. It was clear the employee did not care at all and I did not feel like arguing. Checkout employees were not great either, and I just feel like there are so many other places that act better towards their customers. Im not sure what is going on here, but I wont be driving from Sequim again to visit. Im a local, so I cannot even image what they treat tourists like. Avoid. When in PA (that's Port Angeles, not Pennsylvania), a stop at Swain's is an absolute must. Part sporting goods store, part home goods store, part garden center, part hardware store, part clothing store, part toy store...I mean, if they don't have it you probably don't need it. I could literally spend hours roaming every aisle looking for everything from books to a new fishing pole (and I'd probably find several of each). Where Swain's truly shines is in their vast selection of pretty much everything. They don't just have ONE type of fishing pole. They have approximately six million. (Okay, I'm exaggerating...a little.) And if you can't find what you're looking for, there's a helpful employee nearby to point you in the right direction. On our recent glamping vacation to the area we stopped at Swain's three times to buy supplies, like a porch light for the RV, a sunshade for the beach, and even a sweeeet double loveseat camping chair. Consistently one of the coolest stores in the Kitsap Peninsula and definitely the best place to find odds and ends in Port Angeles. They have an exceptional shoe section where I always find cute and comfy shoes. My picky grandpa also finds shoes he likes here so that's saying something! They have a nice selection of outdoor gear and clothing for hiking, camping, fishing, or just hanging out and looking cute in athleisure wear. And their hardware section is extensive - you can literally find everything you could possibly need in this store, and so could your grandparents and children! I have shopped at Swain's whenever I have lived in Port Angeles, WA. In the midst of this pandemic, I experienced the heart of why Swain's is still so great. First, they had a great selection of the products I was looking for... and I am a tough shopper. The sales team helped and the environment was super up-beat (even with masked customers and employees trying to navigate the selection). On the second note - I had dropped $11 in cash out of my coat pocket when I was trying to put on my mask. I didn't notice this until ~20 minutes later when I was checking out. An employee had found it and turned it in! Finally (third) note - when I asked for his/her name to offer a tip, no employee or manager would provide it. Why? I think it is because the people who work there really love Swain's. P.S., The boots are epic. read more

So if the airlines lose your luggage, this is the place you can get clothing and supplies for your hiking needs. They sell brand name items as well, so some are pricey. I'm a Port Angeles resident and I've been to Swain's twice now. The first time, it was a busy afternoon with lots of other customers in the store, maybe in July or early August. The other reviews basically sum up the store, very spacious and a huge selection of lots of different items, albeit a bit expensive. I really like Swain's though, it has that old-time general store feel and lots of unique things for gifts that you couldn't find anywhere else. The second time I visited was this morning. My boyfriend and I came in around 11 AM and it was mostly empty, since tourist season is over. We headed down the shoe aisles, and I immediately noticed two employees chatting with each other. They didn't greet us or say good morning, which isn't a big deal, but I noticed that every time we went down a different aisle, there they were. Every single aisle in the shoe section, they weren't even trying to hide that they were actively following and watching us as we walked down them. Not even going in the aisles either, just standing at the end of each one so they could watch us as we browsed. I even mentioned to my boyfriend how odd it was. We continued to browse the rest of the store, he went to look at fishing stuff and I was checking out housewares. There were so many employees in the store, and I was approached every few minutes, maybe six or seven different times. It could be they were just trying to be helpful, but I felt extremely watched and like they thought I was up to no good because of what had happened when we first walked in. I found a few early Christmas presents for my family and the lady who checked us out was helpful and nice, but it just left me feeling very uneasy and I don't like to visit places or spend money where I feel that way. Swain's, please help your associates to practice discretion when it comes to monitoring customers. Not every young person is looking to come in and steal things, and it's shameful to think this business profiles people that way, because of how they look. Love this store. They have everything. Outdoor gear. Indoor gear. Whatever. They do have a larger selection for men's clothing and shoes. Women's section is upstairs and they don't have as many jacket and outerwear as men's. ? But it is nice to peruse the aisles and try to find things you don't need, but maybe need... I absolutely LOVE Swain's!! We've been shopping at this store for years, on and off as we're in the area. This is the quintessential "General Store" of Yore.... we just don't have stores like this anymore. And sadly, the one in Port Townsend closed a few years ago and is sorely missed. So if you want that Swain's Experience, you have to go to Port Angeles Swain's is most definitely a General Store, carrying practically everything you could possibly need for home and hearth - yard plants to jeans to boots to kitchen supplies to emergency lighting to fishing gear to - you name it!! We loved coming here to find all the brands we know and trust. Always friendly staff until today. We drive over here twice a year to take care of my husbands brothers boat who is no longer with us. We bought 300$ worth of gear and drove it back to the boat my husband open the dehumidifier box and found out is doesn't have a drain hose. It hadn't even been fifteen minutes when we drove back to Swain's to exchange it for something else. The front said no problem. Then a lady from the hardware area came up as said no exchanges no exceptions she was really rude. You cannot treat customers that way we will never go back I'm sad and disappointed because we tell everyone we know to visit the store. read more

I think that there are two ways to approach this place. First, if you need something in town, save yourself the run around and just cut right to the chase: go to Swains. As residents of Port Angeles, this has been our experience and a lesson learned. Once inside, you can try to find it yourself, or simply ask one of the helpful staff members and they'll take you (like a heat-seeking missile) right to it. And rare is the time they WON'T have it. Second, go, grab some popcorn, and just wander a bit. This is one of those funky stores with character (and characters). You'd be amazed what you can find in those aisles! One negative is the parking lot - be careful, and drive slowly. It's laid out weird and sight lines are poor. read more

I wanted to buy an item that had a price of 1.99 on the shelf, when it was rung up it was 2.99. I told the rude cashier about it, she shrugged and said thats the price 2.99 even though it was 1.99 on the shelf, but it was also ALL the way back in the back of the store. She did not offer to check or give me the price. I did not buy the item. The women cashier has obviously worked retail too long and needs another line of work. Having a chip on your shoulder and being rude is not a way to get repeat customers. read more

This place is phenomenal. They have everything you could possibly want for your outdoor adventure and possibly your life. I don't think they sell computers, but that's about it. Tons of gear for hiking, camping, fishing, home repair, etc. I would say they have a wider range of recreational stuff than your typical big-box outdoor store, plus all your typical general store goods, all at great prices. A great general store,. Their slogan was "Swain's has everything!" And, its darn close! They've been around a long time and maintain a healthy following from the local community and visitors, alike. During the busy summer months it's one of the busiest places in town. As you enter, the familiar smell of fresh popcorn greets you. Their selection of items ranges from everything outdoors to a good selection of hardware and building materials, Toys for the kids, sporting goods, ammo, gifts, hunting/fishing licensure, clothing, kitchen, home, garden, etc etc etc... I find new things every time! Its a shame they dropped the slogan, because even though it's not technically true, it was close! "But, Walmart actually DOES have everything, " you say? You may have a good point, but if you give me the choice between more Walmart's and more Swain's' I'd definitely opt for more Swain's'. I think it's important to talk about where we choose to shop, because a -=purchase=- is a -=vote=- for who will survives the Thunder Dome. I think the atmosphere of Swain's, great variety, community involvement, economically contributions, and convenience make it at easy choice. And looking to the future: if a zombie apocalypse occurs, then Walmart will be ground zero. Swain's will be the armory. But wait, there's more! Yes, Swain's is expanding.
