Located in Jersey City's bustling India Square, I came here with a friend to try their $21 weekend buffet. Upon entering the colorful and spacious interior, we were given booth seating. There were a large variety of choices for the buffet, and I tried a little bit of everything. It was all cooked well and wonderfully flavorful with tons of warm seasonings. Stand outs included butter chicken, noodles, curry, and tandoori. I would have liked more seafood options and meat other than chicken though. The Naan was served warm and slightly crisp, while still being soft. I decided to also order a drink called Shahi Falooda. Since I never tried it, I didn't know how it was supposed to look, even though I thought the presentation was a bit weird, as there were pieces of toast dredged in the liquid. When I tried it, there seemed to be all the flavors described, including rose almond milk, tutti frutti, and vanilla ice cream. It tasted creamy, sweet, and unique, with the ingredients mingling well together. Service was definitely lacking. When the bill came, it was listed as a dessert, so I inquired about it. The waiter responded that they did not have the beverage available, so served me something else instead. This really irked me that the waiter would knowingly do this without mentioning up front that they were out of the beverage, allowing me the free choice to either order another drink or not get one at all. The waiter then told us it would be taken off the bill, but a different waiter came out to inform us that the manager would not allow that. While the food was actually pretty good, this was a very upsetting experience and I will not be returning. At least this taught me to always speak up when I have a doubt or question about anything I order. read more

Drums of Heaven! I can (and often do) make a meal out of just this appetizer. These Chicken drumsticks are tossed in a sweet, spicy sauce that's a total flavor bomb and incredibly addictive. It really borders on too much spice and just really meaty too. A shareable appetizer with a friend. The Butter Chicken is also a favorite of mine. Rich chunky cubes of chicken, in a spiced tomato and butter-based curry (makhan) gravy. Butter chicken is typically known for a creamy, rich texture and that's a definite check box here. This gravy over rice is a hit for sure. I always get a plate of Garlic Naan here as well. This is the perfect vessel to shovel that rich Butter Chicken gravy into my mouth! Street parking is ridiculous. The spaces are so narrow, you'll be doing the D and R tango 4-5 times to park. A majority of the items they have were fresh minus some of their fried options which were a bit soggy (understandable). I love Indian food and found every bite to be rich in flavors and aromatics. My favorites were the Achari Tangdi Kabab (tangy, smoky, and flavorful), Goan Chicken Curry (creamy, spicy, and tender), and Rogan Josh Curry (gamey, tender, and buttery). Save room for dessert because the Tutti Frutti Ice Cream is a must! This was my first time trying it and it was soft and fluffy with bits of chewy, sweet candy. It had a lot of floral essence which was nice & mellow after all the spicy food we had. If their buffet is like this, I imagine their a la carte menu is even better. Definitely recommend! read more

Located in Indian Square. It's a northern Indian restaurant in Jersey City, NJ, just a 5-minute walk from the PATH station. The service is excellent. Meter Parking is on the street, but free street parking is available a bit further away if you know the area. Highly recommend just taking public transportation to avoid the headache. There was one server and she didn't really check up on us. The buffet on the weekend was great! I came with a total of 7 adults. It was $20 per person for all you can eat. Then the lamb briyani. All were hot. The briyani had a bread topping. The marsala was sweet and well made. The briyani was interesting but also well made. We were in the mood for Indian and decided to order from Swadist for the first time. Sometimes you just have a craving for chicken tikka masala.... And this did not disappoint. It was one of the best chicken tikka masalas I've ever had. Moist chicken, complex flavor, slightly sweet - and a huge portion. We also ordered biryani that was verrry spicy. One server seemed to be deep in conversation with another party and not working. Meanwhile, the other seemed to be taking a bunch of phone calls. I found myself in Jersey City this past weekend visiting my friend and we ordered delivery from Swadist. The butter chicken was absolutely phenomenal, the meat to sauce ratio was just right, rice was fragrant. We also tried the goat biryani and I was floored! The goat was tender, soft, and perfectly spiced. The rice was fragrant, spicy, with just the right amount of oil. I loved the food when I dined in and I loved it even more when I ordered in. Everything I've tried here has been delicious and amazing. This is definitely a high quality Indian restaurant dishing out authentic amazing food. Walked into the restaurant purely due to the glorious five star reviews. Tucked in a street away from the journal square buzz, relatively easier to find a parking spot. Ordered soya chaap masala, chicken achaari and Chili garlic Naan, Hakka noodles. Everything we ordered was tasty and flavorful. Swadist's food is incredible! My partner and I have consistently been ordering from here since we moved in. Our go-tos are the chicken tikka masala + paneer. If you can eat gluten don't miss out on their garlic naan or chicken 65. SO GOOD. I'd pass on their Thai dishes, but I've only ordered them once so take that with a grain of salt. Delivery can be pretty hit or miss since it can get pretty popular during dinner. Even picking up can be a gamble so keep that in mind if you're in a rush. I was in the mood for Indian food for lunch so I swung by this spot. I called in my order of tadka dal and tandoor roti and it came to about $14.80. The nice lady told me it would take about 20 minutes. Parking in the area is kind of tough so I had to park illegally nearby when I arrived. The nice lady greeted me when I walked in. The restaurant looked really new when I walked in so I asked when it opened. She said about a year ago and we spoke a little more before I paid and left. She was very nice. When I tried the food, I must say it was very good. It had just enough spice and seasoning. The tandoor roti was very tasty as well. I was looking to order Indian food for delivery and ordered from Swadist after it was recommended to me. Delivery took a long time! I didn't realize until after ordering that the estimate was 70 minutes, but in reality it took 90 minutes. Another thing that I didn't realize until placing the order is that it was being delivered by Door dash.. I will definitely not be ordering delivery from there again. Looking at the menu made me nervous since fusion places making 2-3 different cuisines are often pretty bad. The food was all actually really really tasty, but it also tasted like it had been doused in MSG, especially the samosas and the dal makhani. The rice and the naan were good, the lamb vindaloo was nicely spices and probably 7/10 flavor. Overall, if you don't mind MSG, if you don't hate DoorDash and if you have plenty of time to wait for your food, you will really enjoy your meal here. read more

We were back to Swadist but this time, we dined in. The restaurant is very nice and has planty of seats. We ordered Pepper Lamb for appetizer. The meat was very tender and the sauce was amazing. We then had Butter Chicken Desi Style and Goat Laas Maal for entrees which we paired with Garlic Naan. The Naans were super crispy and garlicky. They went well with every dishes. The chicken and goat were both very tender. They were cooked perfectly. We loved their sauces a lot, which we had to order another order of Naan to dip in the sauce. The Laas Maal is a must-have. It was spicy and flavorful. We have no negative feeling about the restaurant at all. However, we think the portions was getting smaller compared to when we ordered to take out. Was really impressed with this place, I live near Edison and it's pretty rare I'm wowed by Indian food but I thought this place was amazing. We got the Tandori chicken which was perfectly seasoned and so succulent that I didn't stop to take a sip of water. The Saag paneer was excellent, and the butter chicken was probably the best I've had in a long time. We had Rasmalai and Pistachio Kulfi with Faluda both of which were really interesting and tasty. Only 2 items I never had before and will definitely order again. I plan on going for the buffet to try a bunch of different items which is on Sat and Sun. From what I've tried so far I was really satisfied. I ate until my stomach hurt then had dessert. If that isn't a good metric to how delicious something is I don't know what is. read more

Jersey City has got its fair share of Indian restaurants and Swadist has been on my list for a while. We ordered for pick up one Friday evening via their website. We ordered the mango lassi, chicken tikka masala, butter chicken, veggie samosa, and cheese naan. Mango lassis were a nice complement to the meal. They look more like Thai iced teas than mango lassis but don't let that fool you. Both the chicken dishes were great. They taste pretty similar to each other, but one is a bit creamier than the other one (my guess is that it's the butter chicken). The veggie samosa was good too, even though I don't like peas. Dipping this in either of the curry sauces was *chef's kiss*. But my favorite was the cheese naan (again dipping this in either sauce), which actually tasted better the next day. When we reheated it, the cheese was so gooey and melty - I wish I had gotten a shot of the cheese pull. All of this food was enough for a second meal, as we ended up only eating half and we were already stuffed. If you don't want leftovers, I would say that two people could definitely just share one dish + one naan, and you'd be good to go. Next time, I'd like to try their Indo-Chinese menu items, which I think is originally why I bookmarked it but I was really craving some tikka masala. May dine in next time so that I can try the food fresh. read more

However, I will say that all my orders are well packaged and that I feel very safe eating from this restaurant. Traditional home style Indian food, huge menu and variety. They also have Indo-Chinese food which looked interesting. I was surprised at the excellent and attentive service. The kachori chat is a huge pani puri and very decorative, also tasted nothing like what I expected. Delicious and crunchy with tons of green and sweet chutney but no filling really. Same with Dahi bolla. No flavor at all to the vada or bolla which I haven't heard of. Do not order this for sure. Also the stuffed aloo paratha was terrible, greasy with no filling whatsoever.
