I recently had the pleasure of visiting this establishment, and I was thoroughly impressed by the overall experience. From the moment I arrived, I noticed that the building was exceptionally well-maintained, creating a clean and welcoming atmosphere that set a wonderful stage for the visit. The service was truly great; the staff were both attentive and professional, ensuring that every need was met without being intrusive. However, the real highlight was the culinary experience. Everything was incredibly flavorful, showcasing a clear commitment to high-quality ingredients and expert preparation. It is rare to find a venue that successfully balances such high standards for both its physical environment and its service quality.

Authentic and great tasting Chinese food. Every dish was so delicious. Whatever sauce they put on the eggplant was so good. The pork and bamboo combination was great too, and it came out still cooking with a live fire. The waitress mentioned the noodles would be spicy. We thought we could handle it, but we were wrong. The noodles were *extremely* spicy. Still soo good, but lots of tears and water involved. Large and nice space. Love that they have physical menus, and the photos on the menus were so well done--I wanted to try everything!

After trying four of the top rated Szechuan restaurants in Jersey City, Chef Tan was definitely my favorite. First off, it's open till 10pm! Many of them close at 9pm. Secondly, the menu is expansive. They have a full range of Szechuan classics plus some Cantonese options.... Which is nice to have. When *everything* is tingly, it can be overwhelming. Thirdly, the restaurant is big. Easy to sit, and it felt cozy with some faux fireplaces on a cold night. And finally, the food. The tilapia with pickled vegetables was my favorite Szechuan style fish soup we've had in JC. I loved the broth and the fact it didn't have 1/2inch of oil on top so you could actually enjoy drinking the soup. I really enjoyed the pickled vegetable version. The chongqing fried chicken was very tasty, crispy and had great flavor. We also got the eggplant with garlic sauce that was spot on - similar to my favorite at Han Dynasty. The biggest negative was the parking, we had to park in a lot across the street for $9.

We were recommended to try Chef Tan and are happy that we did. The ambiance is beautiful, and there was plenty of seating when we arrived - though it filled up quickly. We were a small party but wanted to try several things and wanted to have leftovers, so our table ended up filled with a ridiculous amount of food. Wontons in chili oil - a staple appetizer order whenever I get Szechuan food, it did not disappoint, a lot of flavor was on the bottom so make sure the wontons are good and covered Salt & white pepper fried chicken - very tasty, ordered as a non-spicy option for my son, but the adults loved it Spicy crispy short rib - mostly bone, but the meat was very good Chef Tan Style Fried Rice - available mild and spicy, we ordered spicy and it was amazing - highly recommended! Chongqing Chicken - another dish that we order any time that we get Szechuan, and it's a little different at each place, this was the first time I've ever bit into a piece of it and tasted sweetness. Not my favorite. I can't speak to authenticity but I'm not sure that it should've been sweet. The spicy fried rice helped to tamper that down, but I wouldn't order this again. Lastly, the star of the show, Sauteed Sliced Lamb in Hunan Style! It was visually perfect with pops of red chili and green cilantro stalks. I've never seen cilantro stalks used in this way but it is genius, this dish is delicious and perfectly balanced and addicting. I'd order it again and again.

J1. Minced Pork and Hunan Mustard Leaf

I came here with a friend who is from Hunan who lives in Jersey City and recommended this place. We got the mustard greens with minced pork and the taro with spare ribs. The mustard with minced pork was good but the taro wasn't the best and the pieces of spare ribs weren't the prime pieces - too fatty and bony. Also the service was pretty spotty. They forgot to adhere to our allergy request and had to remake the mustard green dish, and they gave us the wrong taro dish: we had ordered the taro with preserved pork but when we brought it to their attention they said they were out of that so we just kept the wrong dish. The bill was about $40.

I came to this restaurant on Wednesday afternoon with my boyfriend. Outside was freezing, so I was glad that I was seated right away. This place was very quiet and kind of empty. Inside was a lot warmer but where I was seated, I still felt a bit of a breeze. This restaurant had a lot of seatings and had nice decorations. The servers were pretty nice and checked up on us once. When we needed something we have to wave them down. We ordered dry pot with beef and it came with rice. I love the flavors and the beef was tender. One dish wasn't enough so we ordered steamed eggplant with minced pork. This dish took forever to come out. If a dish take a long time to come out, I expect it to taste amazing. However, this dish was a let down. It lacked a bit of flavor, so we asked for hot sauce to make up for the taste. The server also gave a rice for this eggplant dish also. One important thing for those of you who need to use the women's restroom. I went to the middle stall and locked it all the way. That was a bad idea. The door's lock wasn't aligned properly and it took me a while to get out of the stall (I thought I was going to be stuck inside). It took a lot of muscles (pushing the door and pull the lock) to get out of the bathroom. Please be careful. Besides that issue, I enjoyed eating at this restaurant.

Food (5/5): We got the minced pork eggplant and the beef dry pot stir fry. Both delicious were solid and quite delicious. Be careful of the numbing pepper though in the hotpot. Next time I would ask to see if that could be removed. Service (4/5): The servers didn't go out of their way to be friendly but they helped when asked and we had no issues redeeming the Yelp check-in offer. The hotpot came out at moderate speed but the eggplant with minced pork took a long time. Ambiance (5/5): The restaurant looked really nice and modern with beautiful sphere chandelier type lights. The seats were spacious and well maintained. Overall a nice looking restaurant.

Amazing spicy sichuan Chinese food! I asked for mild spicy and it's just right. Really flavorful and delicious.

What a great restaurant! The environment is wonderful! The food is delicious! I will definitely come back to taste it again next time. I highly recommend the Spicy Sliced Kidney and Vinegar Jellyfish here. It's very quiet and easy to find. The transportation is extremely convenient. It's right next to the subway path. It's so pleasant to come here for a meal after shopping.

We walked into a space with a rustic and earthy design that felt warm and comfortable, the kind of room that stands out from the typical tourist-area restaurants nearby. The dining room had a relaxed, inviting energy with a layout that accommodated both small groups and larger parties, and the focus felt centered around the food rather than the spectacle of the neighborhood. The food is where Mountain House really stands out. We ordered a few dishes and found the Mapo tofu one of the highlights, with a deep, rich flavor and a balanced level of heat that made it feel more complex than many versions of the dish we have tried. The combination of spice, seasoning, and texture came together in a way that felt carefully composed. The Sichuan-style dishes also showcased the restaurant's strength with bold mala flavors, bringing the characteristic numbing spice without completely overwhelming the other elements of the dish. The fried rice was another standout, simple but executed well, with a comforting quality that made it a great balance alongside the more intense Sichuan dishes. The restaurant also offered a variety of dishes that worked well for sharing, including options like pork belly and seafood-based dishes, making it a good choice for groups who wanted to try multiple flavors instead of ordering individually. We appreciated the small touches that added to the overall experience, including the complimentary pickled vegetables and tea service, which helped make the meal feel more complete rather than just a series of dishes arriving at the table. Service during our visit was attentive, and the staff were helpful with navigating the menu and spice levels. They offered guidance on which dishes would work best for our group and adjusted the heat when we asked. The main thing to keep in mind is that Sichuan cuisine can vary significantly in spice level, and some dishes can be much hotter than expected. If you are not used to mala spice, asking for recommendations or adjusting the spice level is worth doing. The portions also make this a better option for sharing, especially if you want to try several dishes. Overall, Mountain House is a strong option for Sichuan food. The combination of bold flavors, comfortable atmosphere, and attentive service makes it a place worth returning to, especially if you enjoy spicy Chinese cuisine and want a restaurant that focuses on the flavors and techniques of Sichuan cooking rather than just convenience.

The ambiance is not that great even though there's a big space and there was a lot of junk sitting around the place like extra stock of drinks and boxes all over the place. I don't think people really eat-in here. When I did takeout, it was still not worth the price of other similar restaurants in the area. Also this place doesn't have combinations sold together -- you have to buy rice on the side for EVERY dish which is not a traditional way to serve each dish in general. The prices here are not worth trying it - way overpriced and overcharged! Should be more affordable since we do not get the rice with the combination plates.
