Yum! Came here on a whim tonight & I am glad we did. They have an extensive menu of Szechuan food & some American Chinese staples. Food is fresh, delicious and plentiful. Service is brisk. The neighborhood looks sketchy but this place is nice. My dining companion was so impressed he said he'll order & pick up on his way home from work from now on. It's so much better than the take-out places near home.

We first tried Chengdu a couple of years back, and initially it was just a take out spot with no seating. I'm glad to see they have expanded the restaurant and now have proper seating at the restaurant. We came here again over the weekend for early dinner to satisfy those spicy food cravings. We ordered a few things off the menu, fish and chicken dry pot...everything was super delicious bustling with flavors. We really liked how the amount of heat was just right, some places make it too spicy to enjoy the food but chefs here do a great job of managing flavors and spicyness. Don't let the location and lack luster outdoors fool you, this is really nice spot. Come here and you will thank me later!

Ordered Grubhub takeout and got the vegetarian chow fun noodles along with the spicy vegetarian dumplings! I was pleasantly surprised by the noodles and really like the flavor (though I def added sriracha on top). The dumplings weren't my favorite (more on the sweeter side than savory due to the sauce) but overall solid spot. Would order from here again! Portions were solid and food arrived hot.

Authentic Chinese food! The place is small and unassuming, but they serve really yummy Sichuan cuisine. The lunch special is a great deal - $10 for rice, protein, and an appetizer. The dishes are a bit pricey when it's not the lunch special, but still delicious. My favorite is definitely the twice cooked pork - spicy and flavorful, very filling. The service is also great. The food comes fast, and the staff are attentive.

This is one of the better Chinese places around Hoboken...but I suggest to its owner to increase the amount of sauce....this is NOT ok.

This review is based on a takeout order of primarily dim sum items. I wonder how much is based on me not ordering the best items on their menu but overall I thought everything was just okay. Fried pork dumplings: usually I'm used to fried dumplings having a bit more of a crispy texture on the bottom. They were fine, but I'd rather make my own at home though. Chicken feet: This was the best thing from my order. Beef tripe: I usually love beef tripe, it's one of my favorite things to get at dim sum. I'm not sure how to explain it well but the flavor and texture just fell flat for me. I would not order this again. Ribs with black bean sauce: I'm used to this dish having a less chewy texture and easier to get off the bone.

This review is based on a take out order. Everything was had was pretty yum and authentically spicy and numbing. Prices were right and the portion was adequate. We ordered a bunch of things to go. What really stood out was the chilli braised fish fillet and the dry fried beef with Chilli. Both were loaded with flavors and was spicy and numbing just as it should. The fish fillet with scallion sauce was the only item we didn't like. There was no flavor and it was tasteless. Overall a solid spot. Definitely recommended if you want authentic Szchuan food

WOW. Loved the food at Chengdu1. The restaurant is family-owned and operated, with authentic and exceptionally delicious Szechuan cuisine, sizable portions, and reasonable prices. While the outside of Chengdu1 looks rather unassuming, the inside is very nice and quite elegant. There is parking in the plaza across the street. The food came very quickly after we placed our order. My family's spice tolerance is on the medium-low side so we asked for dishes to be less spicy. My favorite dish so far is the Fish with Bean Flower in Hot Chili Sauce (豆花鱼片), which was just incredible! This was my first time having the douhua (i.e. the tofu pudding, which they call bean flower due to direct translation) in a spicy sauce, and it was such an exciting explosion of flavor. The douhua was so soft and fresh, and complemented the fish filets well; I also enjoyed the roasted chickpeas that they added on top, which also gave the dish a subtle nice crunch. In addition, the Eggplant w. Garlic Sauce (鱼香茄子) was delicious, and the eggplant pieces were so soft and tender. Beyond the amazing food, the service was great, and the restaurant's family and staff are friendly. Chengdu1 is definitely going to be a frequent stop in Jersey City for me and my family. Would highly recommend!

Cold noodles in chili oil, volcano chicken
    Craig G.

Don't let the location deceive: the cuisine at Chengdu 1 is worlds apart from your average neighborhood Chinese takeout. Specializing in authentic and occasionally hard to find Szechuan dishes, this unassuming spot off the Holland Tunnel offers a wide range of regional eats. I ordered delivery on a Sunday night and my order came impressively quick: cold noodles in chili oil and "volcano chicken". The cold noodles were loaded with Szechuan peppers and packed a tongue numbing wallop. The volcano chicken, while tasty with stir fried chicken and kai lan, didn't live up to the promised "extra hot and spicy". Still, a worthwhile order.

Flavorful food, excellent customer service…read more My husband and I went here for dinner on Thanksgiving. Around 6:30 pm it was quite busy. The wait for a table took about 10 min. We were seated at the very front where there was quite the draft when someone opened the door. They would probably benefit from a winter vestibule. Although the place was full and they received a lot of pick-up orders, the service was still attentive and fairly prompt. We ordered the Truffle Fried Rice, String Beans, and Mapo Tofu, all to be made vegetarian. The food took about 20-30 min to arrive. All of the dishes were flavorful, delicious, and pretty big portions for reasonable prices. The dishes are all a bit too oily for my taste but you can ask to adjust amount of oil. Towards the end, I tasted meat and double-checked with the waiter, and it turned out he didn't realize that we wanted Truffle Fried Rice to be vegetarian as well. Both he and the restaurant manager apologized multiple times. The manager comped our meal and also offered a gift card for the misunderstanding. Will definitely come back for the flavorful food and excellent customer service.

The truffle fried rice was nice but didn't have the "wok hay" fried crunchy bits I look forward to, the rice was rather soft and I wish it had more truffle flavor. The spicy beef came out in a giant pot of peppercorns and the broth was spicy and flavorful and the beef was velvety soft. The pork belly was light and not fatty as a cold dish. Overall a good experience. I've seen tables getting oranges at the end of their meal as a sweet treat but both times I've gone, my group has never gotten oranges :(

The dishes are very unique in cultural sourcing - it's not what you expect of a regular Chinese restaurant. The servings are HUGE and good for 2 servings. The ambiance is not that great even though there's a big space and there was a lot of junk sitting around the place like extra stock of drinks and boxes all over the place. I don't think people really eat-in here. When I did takeout, it was still not worth the price of other similar restaurants in the area. Also this place doesn't have combinations sold together -- you have to buy rice on the side for EVERY dish which is not a traditional way to serve each dish in general. The prices here are not worth trying it - way overpriced and overcharged! Should be more affordable since we do not get the rice with the combination plates.
