    Pork hock
    Alice X.

Came here tonight at 7:30pm Saturday night. There were 4 parties ahead of us but we got seated early. The menu is QR code but you still have to order from a waiter. That being said, I think they are understaff because it's very hard to flag down a waiter here. The food took a very long time to come. We got 1) soup dumplings: 3/5 this was just okay. Nothing special in my opinion. Not flavorful enough. 2) pork hock: 4/5 this was good. The pork was super tender and fall off the bone. The sauce is new to me. It's kind of like a garlicky sweet and sour. I would get dong po version next time 3) pickled veggie beef: 5/5 this was super good! Very flavorful and lots of wok hei smokiness. I wish the pickled veggies were a bit more sour Overall Yuan is good. It's tasty and I would come back to try their more popular dishes like the fish. The place could benefit from warmer lighting, it's too cool right now and it's making the place look like a cafeteria. It would also benefit from at least two more servers. The servers seemed extremely busy and flustered.

My friends and I stopped by YUAN for a quick bite before Christmas shopping and I'm so glad we found this local gem! The food is super tasty and the service was quick! We got the Szechuan chicken and stir fry noodles to start ( absolutely delicious) ! If you are ever by Newport mall and are tired of the food court stop by YUAN!!

Yuan Jersey City is such a gem. The food is fresh, flavorful, and consistently delicious, and the staff is always welcoming. The flavors are bold, authentic, and beautifully presented. Can't wait to come back.

I was looking forward to trying this spot. When I arrived I was lucky to find parking on the street. When I walked in, the place was super cute. I was greeted and sat. Evn was my server, and he was nice. I ordered: Chicken in numbing chili oil Beef and dried bamboo shoot noodles Steamed whole fish in foil The food was really good! The seabass was sooooo good! The noodles were great, but it was super spicy! But all in all the food was super good! I had a good experience!

This is a nice, sit down Chinese restaurant in jersey City where you can come with family and friends to celebrate special occasions. Decor was nice, and the staff were attentive and accommodating! They put pretty garnishes on their food like edible flowers and micro greens, which is not something you will find in the other Chinese restaurants in the area. Beef with truffle sauce - this is not a dish that you'd typically find in a traditional Chinese restaurant. It's a refreshing Chinese-fusion take on stir-fried, tender cubes of beef, asparagus and garlic in a delicious truffle sauce. Beef in chili oil - it's a well cooked, spicy and flavorful dish. However, taste-wise I find that it is similar other Sichuanese restaurant in JC.

This restaurant is truly an authentic Chinese restaurant with fresh fish and traditional dishes (spicy ones too!) as their specialty! I really enjoyed the flavors of every single dish and the ingredients are so fresh! In terms of dishes, some dishes (the squid and jellyfish) were spicier than others but I still enjoyed them, and the sauce is so good with rice! The jellyfish is definitely different than what I'm used to (Cantonese style is more softer) but I really liked the chili oil and I actually didn't mind the hard crispy texture! The eggplant dish is a classic and I really liked the texture and the sauce! The fish was probably my favorite - I could tell that the fish was fresh and the home style sauce is like a mushroom and soy sauce flavor which was a really comforting taste! Service was quick and attentive and the interior is decorated with a modern taste! If you want to experience a variety of authentic Chinese dishes, you should come to Yuan with a group of friends or family and order lots of dish and share them "family-style!!

We chose Yuan for a family lunch to celebrate Lunar New Year. It's located inside the Newport mall, near the parking lot entrance. Although it was a relatively small space, the inside was beautifully decorated, especially for the festive occasion. Since we had a reservation, we didn't have to wait for a table. We ordered a variety of dishes from the menu, including an appetizer sampler, eggplant, bok choy, kung pao chicken, and curry beef. The soup dumplings were particularly delicious, filled with a generous amount of soup. My favorite dish was the steamed fish, which was soaked in a delectable citrus flavor sauce. What made it even better was that the fish was cooked right in front of us on the stove, and the staff was there to wrap it and remove the bones. Overall, we had a great experience at Yuan. The service was excellent, and the food arrived at a steady pace.

Nice Asian restaurant in JC. They had the lunar new year decorations on. Very festival. I made the reservation through YELP. Highly recommend to make a reservation. It's a popular spot. I like the soup dumpling, eggplants/string beans and fish in Szechuan sauce (spicy). Chicken was too a little sweet for me. The stew beef was hard and little taste. Not a fan of it. The staff were friendly and very attentive. But I felt we waited a while for the food to come out due to high volume in the restaurant . Overall it's good.

笋干牛肉面 Beef and Dried Bamboo Shoots Noodles

A convenient and yummy addition to Newport's food scene which can be a bit dull. Better quality Chinese food without having to go into the city. I think the menu is mostly Sichuan which is known for being super spicy but they have other, non-spicy options, and smaller dishes so you can get more variety. It does annoy me that rice isn't free and when I ate in around soft opening, my phone had no service, which isn't great if you're keeping an eye on your work email. Service is friendly (I can speak Mandarin). It's nicely decorated inside and a bit cozy. Stuff I have tried with the first being one of my favorites: 蟹粉大虾豆腐 Salty Egg Yolk Tofu and Shrimp 芹菜香干肉丝 Celery & Dried Bean Curd w. Pork 清炒丝瓜 Stir-Fried Loofah 四喜烤麸 Braised Gluten Salad 水饺 Steamed Dumplings (猪肉白菜 Pork with Cabbage) 百叶结红烧肉 Braised Pork w. Bean Curd Knot 碎米芽菜炒土豆丝 Stir-Fired Shredded Potatoes w. pickle 松仁玉米 Sauteed Sweet Corn w. Pine Nuts 菠萝咕咾肉 Sweet and Sour Diced Pork with Pineapple 清炒豆苗 Sauteed Snow Pea Sprout 红油抄手 Wonton in Chili Sauce (I didn't like this as much, too spicy) 笋干牛肉面 Beef and Dried Bamboo Shoots Noodles Photos of the last two are included - and too spicy to my liking and not what I would reorder. But if you love spicy, you're in luck.

    String beans, incredible!
    Leah C.

Every dish was absolutely incredible, prices are pretty good, servings are great for family meals, and service is friendly. The steamed fish was highly recommended in reviews and by the server, so ordered that and agree that it's a must-order dish. The spicy chongqing chicken was great, the dumplings and soup dumplings were very good, the fried rice was very good.. everything was great! My favorite dish was actually the string beans though, I'll definitely be back to try new things and will make sure to order those again.

Stir Fried Squid with Yellow Chives

Recently opened Szechuan restaurant is conveniently located across the Newport PATH! The interior is modern and nicely decorated. Service was fine. For two people, we ordered 3 dishes which was more than enough! Everything tasted great but was a little on the pricier side. Would love to come back and try the Paper wrapped fish or Steamed Whole Fish in Foil. Multiple tables ordered this dish and it looked and smelled delicious! String Beans: classic, Szechuan-style fried string beans. A little salty for my taste but otherwise can't complain. Stir Fried Squid with Yellow Chives: I'm always worried about ordering squid and the texture is just too chewy. Not in this case! The squid is tender and well-seasoned. The yellow chives are great too and I just wish they added more! Tomato Beef Stew: the beef was also tender and really tasted home-cooked. And you really get that tomato flavor in the beef and soup. It's quite thick so they must have added tomato paste to enhance the tomato flavor. Really liked this dish to warm us up!

    Beef in truffle sauce
    Bevano L.

Yuan is a new restaurant which is trying to put a new spin on Chinese food. First they serve micro greens which is unusual for Chinese food. Second they have dishes like beef with truffle sauce which is a fusion dishes. Food are generally tasty. They are pricy but portion are pretty big which deserve the price.

If you follow Chinese food in the NY/NJ area, you know there's a growing plethora of super authentic, modern Beijing / Shanghai / Szechuan restaurants all offering beautiful settings and legit dishes. They're not here for you, Westerners. They're here for the affluent Chinese residents, many of whom are in the college-age bracket. So when you see a clientele of largely Mandarin-speaking 21yos, you can generally assume you've found one of these places. Sadly, while Yuan has the looks, it doesn't deliver on the cooks. We started with the lackluster Crispy Bell Fish, which made up for in bones what it should have had in seasoning. The Wonton in Chili Sauce was better, though the sauce was bizarrely soupy instead of oily. Their signature dish is the Stir-Fried Squid with Yellow Chives, and that was delicious--though the flavor profile is almost identical to Szechuan white fish and pickled vegetable soup (Suan Cai Yu)--just saucier and with squid instead of fish. The Bo-Bo Bok Choy was a decent veggie side, though it was made up entirely of yu choy, not bok choy. I don't know why they made the switch--it's not like the mostly Chinese clientele wouldn't be able to tell? Our biggest disappointment was the Szechuan Dry Fried Chicken. They used a strange overarching seasoning on the chicken--something akin to black bean--instead of just letting the breaded chicken cubes absorb the accompanying Szechuan peppers and garlic during the stir fry process. The result was a weird black bean-esque chicken dish that was neither spicy nor garlicky--which is exactly why people order La Zi Ji! So strange and so disappointing. Random addendum: Despite the name of the restaurant meaning "little garden", there isn't much in the way of greenery in the restaurant decor, save for a large raised planter at the front of the restaurant full of household plants. As nice as the planter is, it's sort of in the way, so I think their decorator would've been better off making use of the high ceilings to hang plants from instead. Just my $0.02 as a plant mama.

The dishes are very unique in cultural sourcing - it's not what you expect of a regular Chinese restaurant. The servings are HUGE and good for 2 servings. The ambiance is not that great even though there's a big space and there was a lot of junk sitting around the place like extra stock of drinks and boxes all over the place. I don't think people really eat-in here. When I did takeout, it was still not worth the price of other similar restaurants in the area. Also this place doesn't have combinations sold together -- you have to buy rice on the side for EVERY dish which is not a traditional way to serve each dish in general. The prices here are not worth trying it - way overpriced and overcharged! Should be more affordable since we do not get the rice with the combination plates.

Shredded Beef & Chili Pepper 小椒牛肉絲拌麵 $16 ** Their dry mix noodles totally exceeded my expectations! So saucy, perfectly bouncy noodles, and they didn't skimp on the bell peppers or beef at all. *Fried Bean Gluten 蘇式烤麩 $13 * My all-time favorite appetizer! The presentation was a little fancier than other spots, and the portion size matched the price as there were plenty of pieces of bean gluten. *Braised Abalone with pork Belly and Quail Egg 鮑魚元寶紅燒肉 $38 A "lucky dish" as abalone shaped like little gold ingots. The abalone was really tender, though I was hoping the pork belly would be melt-in-your-mouth. It came in a hot stone pot to keep it warm. The thick hongxiao sauce made me want a bowl of rice to soak it all up! *Tea-Infused Chicken with Mint 香茶薄荷葉香酥雞 $25 I could hardly taste the tea flavor in chicken, but the crispy mint really stole the show! The chicken stayed juicy and tender, and thankfully it wasn't too "yeet hay" after all lol. *Osmanthus Milk & Fermented Rice 桂花冰酥酪 $10 ** They've got many traditional, nourishing desserts, like pear soup, black sesame paste, and brown sugar fried sticky rice, but we went for floral and refreshing. The osmanthus and sweet fermented rice really popped in the milk pudding! Definitely save room for dessert.

Flavorful food, excellent customer service…read more My husband and I went here for dinner on Thanksgiving. Around 6:30 pm it was quite busy. The wait for a table took about 10 min. We were seated at the very front where there was quite the draft when someone opened the door. They would probably benefit from a winter vestibule. Although the place was full and they received a lot of pick-up orders, the service was still attentive and fairly prompt. We ordered the Truffle Fried Rice, String Beans, and Mapo Tofu, all to be made vegetarian. The food took about 20-30 min to arrive. All of the dishes were flavorful, delicious, and pretty big portions for reasonable prices. The dishes are all a bit too oily for my taste but you can ask to adjust amount of oil. Towards the end, I tasted meat and double-checked with the waiter, and it turned out he didn't realize that we wanted Truffle Fried Rice to be vegetarian as well. Both he and the restaurant manager apologized multiple times. The manager comped our meal and also offered a gift card for the misunderstanding. Will definitely come back for the flavorful food and excellent customer service.
