I was looking for a different Chinese restaurant to try in Jersey City, particularly one that had a decent variety of vegetarian offerings. Fortunately, we discovered Yuan, located in the office area of Newport. We arrived shortly after 6pm on a Friday evening, effectively an early dinner for us and most. The bright side is that we were able to finish easily within an hour. I do enjoy their little booths. We sat in one and kinda felt private even if it wasn't. Just a nice little touch, we felt. To start, we ordered the Eggplant with Minced Pepper Sauce. This had a really nice kick to it. A pretty cool way to eat Eggplant. We enjoyed it. After that, we split Veggie Noodles & the Kung Pao Tofu. The noodles were great as I anticipated. The Kung Pao Tofu was cooked pretty well too. I was looking for something different from the Ma Po Tofu I'm used to eating as I'm getting a little sick of the after taste. This Kung Pao, like most others, has a combination of every flavor palette. Perhaps a little too much for me, but maybe if they could make a General Tso's Tofu, that'll bring me back to my memories of Chinese Takeout! Classic but with a modern twist on traditional chinese dishes. Best stir fried noodles i've had in a long time. We opted for traditional beef broccoli as well and it was flavorful as the noodles. I was happy with every bite! I noticed 3 tables (all chinese folks) were served with the fish dish and as we passed by the dish looked so appetizing so felt we missed out even though the dishes we ordered were very good and flavorful. Definitely will try the fish next go round. Waitress was excellent and provided explanation of the dishes on the menu written both in chinese and english. The green beans and eggplant was tasty, but it was steeping in at least 1/4cup of oil at the bottom of the plate. The beef and asparagus was good, a savory black pepper sauce with nice asparagus. Came here tonight at 7:30pm Saturday night. There were 4 parties ahead of us but we got seated early. The menu is QR code but you still have to order from a waiter. That being said, I think they are understaff because it's very hard to flag down a waiter here. The food took a very long time to come. We got 1) soup dumplings: 3/5 this was just okay. Nothing special in my opinion. Not flavorful enough. 2) pork hock: 4/5 this was good. The pork was super tender and fall off the bone. The sauce is new to me. It's kind of like a garlicky sweet and sour. I would get dong po version next time 3) pickled veggie beef: 5/5 this was super good! Very flavorful and lots of wok hei smokiness. I wish the pickled veggies were a bit more sour Overall Yuan is good. It's tasty and I would come back to try their more popular dishes like the fish. The place could benefit from warmer lighting, it's too cool right now and it's making the place look like a cafeteria. It would also benefit from at least two more servers. This restaurant is truly an authentic Chinese restaurant with fresh fish and traditional dishes (spicy ones too!) as their specialty! I really enjoyed the flavors of every single dish and the ingredients are so fresh! In terms of dishes, some dishes (the squid and jellyfish) were spicier than others but I still enjoyed them, and the sauce is so good with rice! The jellyfish is definitely different than what I'm used to (Cantonese style is more softer) but I really liked the chili oil and I actually didn't mind the hard crispy texture! The eggplant dish is a classic and I really liked the texture and the sauce! The fish was probably my favorite - I could tell that the fish was fresh and the home style sauce is like a mushroom and soy sauce flavor which was a really comforting taste! We chose Yuan for a family lunch to celebrate Lunar New Year. It's located inside the Newport mall, near the parking lot entrance. Although it was a relatively small space, the inside was beautifully decorated, especially for the festive occasion. Since we had a reservation, we didn't have to wait for a table. We ordered a variety of dishes from the menu, including an appetizer sampler, eggplant, bok choy, kung pao chicken, and curry beef. The soup dumplings were particularly delicious, filled with a generous amount of soup. My favorite dish was the steamed fish, which was soaked in a delectable citrus flavor sauce. What made it even better was that the fish was cooked right in front of us on the stove, and the staff was there to wrap it and remove the bones. Overall, we had a great experience at Yuan. A convenient and yummy addition to Newport's food scene which can be a bit dull. Better quality Chinese food without having to go into the city. I think the menu is mostly Sichuan which is known for being super spicy but they have other, non-spicy options, and smaller dishes so you can get more variety. It does annoy me that rice isn't free and when I ate in around soft opening, my phone had no service, which isn't great if you're keeping an eye on your work email. Every dish was absolutely incredible, prices are pretty good, servings are great for family meals, and service is friendly. The steamed fish was highly recommended in reviews and by the server, so ordered that and agree that it's a must-order dish. Recently opened Szechuan restaurant is conveniently located across the Newport PATH! The interior is modern and nicely decorated. Service was fine. For two people, we ordered 3 dishes which was more than enough! Everything tasted great but was a little on the pricier side. Would love to come back and try the Paper wrapped fish or Steamed Whole Fish in Foil. Multiple tables ordered this dish and it looked and smelled delicious! String Beans: classic, Szechuan-style fried string beans. A little salty for my taste but otherwise can't complain. Stir Fried Squid with Yellow Chives: I'm always worried about ordering squid and the texture is just too chewy. Not in this case! The squid is tender and well-seasoned. The yellow chives are great too and I just wish they added more! Tomato Beef Stew: the beef was also tender and really tasted home-cooked. And you really get that tomato flavor in the beef and soup. If you follow Chinese food in the NY/NJ area, you know there's a growing plethora of super authentic, modern Beijing / Shanghai / Szechuan restaurants all offering beautiful settings and legit dishes. They're not here for you, Westerners. They're here for the affluent Chinese residents, many of whom are in the college-age bracket. So when you see a clientele of largely Mandarin-speaking 21yos, you can generally assume you've found one of these places. Sadly, while Yuan has the looks, it doesn't deliver on the cooks. We started with the lackluster Crispy Bell Fish, which made up for in bones what it should have had in seasoning. The Wonton in Chili Sauce was better, though the sauce was bizarrely soupy instead of oily. Their signature dish is the Stir-Fried Squid with Yellow Chives, and that was delicious--though the flavor profile is almost identical to Szechuan white fish and pickled vegetable soup (Suan Cai Yu)--just saucier and with squid instead of fish. The Bo-Bo Bok Choy was a decent veggie side, though it was made up entirely of yu choy, not bok choy. I don't know why they made the switch--it's not like the mostly Chinese clientele wouldn't be able to tell? Our biggest disappointment was the Szechuan Dry Fried Chicken. They used a strange overarching seasoning on the chicken--something akin to black bean--instead of just letting the breaded chicken cubes absorb the accompanying Szechuan peppers and garlic during the stir fry process. The result was a weird black bean-esque chicken dish that was neither spicy nor garlicky--which is exactly why people order La Zi Ji! So strange and so disappointing. Random addendum: Despite the name of the restaurant meaning "little garden", there isn't much in the way of greenery in the restaurant decor, save for a large raised planter at the front of the restaurant full of household plants. As nice as the planter is, it's sort of in the way, so I think their decorator would've been better off making use of the high ceilings to hang plants from instead. Yuan serves some authentic traditional Chinese dishes over in Jersey City. It wasn't a bad trip from NYC as it's right outside the Newport PATH station. Inside is a wooden interior with some greenery, giving it a modern vibe. Service is fantastic and attentive, even when it's jam packed. For a party of 3, we ordered a good amount different dishes to try out multiple things. Soup Dumplings ($11) - made pretty top notch. Best eaten hot, but definitely want it to cool off a little bit. Garlic Snow Pea Sprout ($18) - our go to veggie dish is a great option. Stir-Fried Beef Tendon with Peppers ($28) - This was my favorite dish our of everything I tried. I did not expect this to be this good. The tenderness of the tendons itself soaked in spicy sauce makes it amazing to eat. Recommend eating this is a cup of rice to get some of that sauce socked in it. Stir Fried Squid with Yellow Chives ($27) - A good chewiness to the squid. Goes well with a cup of rice. Steamed Whole Fish in Foil ($54) - I would say this is my 2nd favorite dish. They steamed an entire fish, including the bones and head, so will need to be careful with the bones. They meat slides off pretty easily from the bone. It's cooked with this sauce they wrapped in foil, which really enhances the flavor of the fish. Yuan was one of our fav when it first opened due to the taste, services and variety. We had been loyal customers to this establishment until recently times. When we visited Yuan with our family, one of the servers was so rude (rolling eyes the minute he arrived at our table and saying "idk" to simple questions we asked about the dishes). This server left a bad taste in our mouth and we reported our complaint to the front desk, and were told that this specific server was "complained" way too many times already. This left us wonder then how come nothing was done to improve the situation if that server was complained and left so many unpleasant experiences to other patrons. The quality of Yuan began to deteriorate when we ordered take out one time soon after. The beef in the chili soup base was so stale and near spoilage that it broke in pieces the minute you tried to pick it up with chopsticks (too much starch to mask the spoilage of the beef slices). This came a shock to us because we frequented Yuan so many times before. It also raised a red flag to us. Later we visited Yuan again in person and found their supposedly freshly fried bell fish was indeed so stale to the point that it was hard to chew. It was clear that the fish had been out for a long time even if it was served to us in five minutes after we ordered. This left us wonder if the fish was "freshly fried", why would it be so stale...we ended up not eating that entire plate. The beef in chili soup also was over starched and felt kind of like leftover from others (the soup was like a whole chunk of spicy jello with unfresh beef slices in it). After recent experiences, we were so disappointed by Yuan that it followed the exacerbating paths that many of the new restaurants had (services and food worsened with time). Unfortunately, we won't be returning after so many letdowns. read more

I came for the soft opening, so I'll have to update the review after they finalize their menu. They said that they plan on making a lunch special menu. I came here after seeing a post on the Jersey City subreddit. The beef with truffle was so tender and was so flavorful that I could still taste the truffle after eating the spicy chicken. The rice bowls are super aesthetic. The chicken was tender and slightly crispy. Didn't have too much dough and the strips were large. I hate some restaurants where they basically diced the chicken and you have to play find a needle in the haystack in the peppers. They got all the AC here to blow the heat away while you sweat from the spice. Ice water is solid. Maybe I'll get a drink next time. No lines since no one knows about it. Manager type looking guy asks about the food as we got the check. My wife and I both complained and showed the half chewed rubbery squid on our plates and 2/3 of the dish uneaten, in which he just says "okay " and never apologized or offered any appeasement. Okay. One of their Chefs was in the men's room and after urinating he simply put his hands under water for about 1-2 seconds and walked out; without using any soap. I also recommend the sauteed eggplant and green beans. The eggplant portion was good. The double cooked pork portion was a bit small but tasty. Yuan is a sleek, bright Chinese restaurant and was packed on a oddly mild winter evening. We were seated immediately, scanned the QR for the menu and went to town. You'll find some Chinese favorites on the menu but for the most part it was unique, sort of grandma-ish dishes. Delicious and filled with authentic flavors. Soup dumplings, green beens with pork, a whole fish in a delicious sauce, incredible. Now one chicken dish that HH had mentioned was served cold and had a literally tongue numbing ghost pepper sauce. Crazy hot, it was a feast for the senses. It was great. I don't know whether it was my eyes watering or tears of joy while I tore into it? Fortunately MJ had brought both red and white wine to douse the flames. Yes it's BYOB! Distill my heart! We all ate like we were going to the chair. We didn't even need a to go box! I honestly usually hate white fish but the steamed barramundi is so tender and flavorful. The eggplant is also great (both the cold appetizer and the hot green pepper one are fantastic).
