In the first visit of modern times I got the dazzling Rasoi Platter, a tandoori meat combo. For the next trip, I went with someone more vegetable-focused and the non-meat side of the menu was still impressive, including the energetic methu malai mutter. We were seven person party last week for dinner and had more than couple hundred dollar bill and later on ordered one desert and the tab was paid through scan code but to our utmost astonishment the waitress ran after us to get money for one desert and we ended up paying her again for the one desert we ordered and basically Rasoi charged us twice and caused lots of unpleasant embassarment by running after us to the door. She did not check if the bill for desert was already paid and even when she was told so she said it did not go through. Next day I checked my American Express Platinum card and found two charges for one desert. Highly derogatory and unprofessional conduct by the employee of the Rasoi Restaurant. Really really good Indian food, and the staff were very friendly and accommodating. When my cousin and I ordered online, but the order did not reach the restaurant due to a broken fax machine, they rushed our order in 15 minutes. We got Fish Masala, Chicken Makhani, Navratna Korma, and Lachha Paratha. The Fish Masala had a rich sauce with perfectly cooked and very tender fish. They used salmon, which was interesting as I was expecting some sort of white fish. It did make the dish a bit fishy, but nonetheless, delicious. The Chicken Makhani was my favorite. The sauce was rich, tomatoey, creamy, and complex in spices, but the chicken was very dry, unfortunately. The Navratna Korma was also creamy and slightly sweet. Everything went amazing with the white rice, but even better with the Lachha Paratha. It was so buttery and crispy with a slight chew. Overall, great experience and highly recommend. The chicken makhani was creamy and had good tender chicken, the deep fried paneer was delicious and came with nice sauces, and the mango lassi wasn't too runny or thick with good sweetness. Service (5/5): Overall great service where they were attentive, fast to get food out, and many servers available. Ambiance (5/5): Beautiful and well lit interior with Indian music and decorations. I went here on a date and absolutely loved it. The service was great. Our waitress made recommendations for our order that were well-received. I highly recommend Paneer Pakora (fried cheese). We also had the Samosas which were yummy. For our main course, we split Dum Aloo, Paneer Tikka Masala, and Saag Paneer. Rasoi is one of the oldest restaurants in Jersey City and some of the first Punjabi food. To be honest it's one of the last remaining with good classic Punjabi food that is Indo-American and not too sweet. We love ordering the sham savera. The curries are always excellent and reliable. The saag paneer was also good. The naan and chaat can be average but the curries are always excellent. Love coming here since it reminds me of childhood with decent service and classic Indian restaurant with banquet vibes. They also have excellent catering. read more

This review is for the weekend lunch buffet. It costs 18.95 plus 15% tip for parties of 6 or more. Lots of varieties of curries, rice, and items. They had good service and no lines on a Sunday lunch. I can't read any of the stuff, but it clearly labels if each thing is vegetarian or not just in case. My favorites were the tandoori chicken and the bbq chicken which were not dry. The biryani was also good since it was spicy. I won't give it 5 stars because I did see a couple flies flying around, and I wish there was more meat like beef or goat. 4 stars is just for food ....we did a quick take out on Saturday night. We had ordered paneer tikka masala and baigan bhaarta. Food was tasty and portion size was decent. When i went to pick up the food, the indoor seating seemed decent. May be worth a try next time. The hand held to receive payment did not work inspire of multiple swipes, so I had to do inside to make the payment and the pick-up didn't remain a 'quick' anymore. Good option if you are looking North Indian Cuisie, especially Appetizers, Curries, and Bread. I didn't like the Biryani that much, and the meat in the Biryani, as well as their Tandoor options tend to be overcooked at time - really depends on the day. I went to Rasoi with my parents for lunch last week. We were originally headed to the Iselin location but Jersey City was a bit closer to us and it was getting late. The restaurant wasn't busy at all. There was 1 other party when we walked in so we were seated right away. To our dismay they only offer the lunch buffet on Friday-Sunday. The menus still say they offer the lunch buffet on other days but the staff was quick to tell us the menus are outdated. For appetizers we got fried paneer and fried okra. Both were very tasty. They came with different dipping sauces which paired well with both dishes. I ordered the chicken malai kofta and my parents shared the goat curry. It took well over 30 minutes for our entrees to come out. I remember because I had paid for an hour of parking and I was starting to worry that my time would run out. Both the entrees were cooked well and tasted great. The goat was very tender and the level of spice was perfect. The chicken malai kofta tasted great too but my only gripe is that it only came with 4 tiny meatballs. It's served in a decent-sized pot so I was a bit disappointed to find how much little meat I got. Nevertheless, the two dishes were seasoned well so even the broth(?)/soup(?) was good enough to eat with the included basmati rice. I would definitely come back here to try their lunch buffet. Went here for weekend buffet. First the good: Pani puri was okay. It is a stand and a person hands over puris.However, it is not the same quality as other Pani puri stands in the area. But I would still count it as a good addition to buffet. Desserts- Gulab jamun was fresh and good. Rice pudding was also okay. Vegetarian options especially Sambar and chole were good. It's sometimes the places you literally have been going to for years that you realize you've somehow never left a review for. I've lived in this area since 2016 so I can only say that I have been to Rasoi or ordered delivery there countless times over those many years. I love the Mixed Tandoor, their samosas with or without chole, and mango lassi. All, the highlights. I like how it has a funny club vibe in there with the lighting. Most of all, I love how the head waiter always gives me the respect of someone who has been coming to his establishment for 7 years. It feels like my Indian home away from home. One of the first places I recommend if someone has actually made the venture out from NYC to see me. I'm mad I hadn't ordered from here before now. This food was awesome, and any worries I had about it getting to me and tasting as good as it should after traveling were squashed. I got to greedy, and forgot to take photos. Seems like there are enough here to see. Doesn't even matter, just go, the food is good enough to stare at in person. Food packaged up well, and a recycled cloth bag came with, which was a nice touch. I had: Onion Kulcha. Truly for the onion lovers, seasoned well, soft and lovely, and huuuge. Wrapped in foil and opened like a warm gift. I dunno which sauces came just for that, I tried all of em, but it really doesn't need sauce. I'm thinking maybe a creamy raita sauce would be good on it for Day 2. Pani Puri. Cute lil fried crispy puffs, about 8 of em, just waiting to be tapped with a spoon til it provides a hole, and filled with the stuff in the lil cups that came in the takeout bag. Don't know which was which, but I taste-tested it all and put a combination inside. Pickled onions, a green creamy sauce, a stuffing-like filling, and a tangy brown tamarind tasting sauce, plus there was a small soup-sized container of a vinegar-based thin sauce, which I've never seen before. The vinegar sauce didn't seem to combine fabulously with any of my dishes, but hey, I tried it. I didn't think this dish would travel well, but it did, and it was fun to eat. Lamb Korma. Brilliantly spicy, creamy, bright, distinctively authentic. I was so glad there was so much of it, I didn't wanna see it go. The lamb was tender, and bite-sized, I ate it with the spoon I used to serve the rice. Sauce was dreamy. Wasn't overly oily. I want to try every version of this. I've already favorited this place in my mind and whenever the craving hits, Rasoi is gonna be my go-to. Go Go Go! read more

Rasoi Kitchen in Journal Square is an excellent spot for Indian food in an area that's crowded with options. The interior is pretty spacious and it should work whether you're here with a group, or if there are few of you. We arrived a little early, which is why it took a long time for the food to arrive, but that's understandable. Try to be here past 5.15 so they've had time to prep. The butter chicken is fantastic. Hands down among the top three I've had in the NY/NJ area. The sweetness come through along with the creamy flavor, and they blend to create a really pleasant experience. Rice is included in the price, and even though the food isn't cheap, it is likely to last beyond a meal, considering the portions. The goat biryani is a very solid dish too. Too much ghee seems to have been used for my liking. But hey, it's North Indian cuisine -- I know what I signed up for! The pieces of goat are nice, but the meat is in bone. So not sure how much protein you'll get out of it. We weren't disappointed, and I'm glad I took my mom to this food spot for her first time in JC. read more

Rasoi is not recommended for any vegetarian foodies. Even their gravy has distinct smell of non-veg and place used to be good but now is converted to a non-veg hub. Any vegetarians or Jains please dont waste your time, money or energy since this street is full of choices for foodies and better places to go than rasoi. We had Naan, Mango Lassi and Paneer Tikka Masala. Paneer Tikka Masala had the orange tomato gravy smelling of smoke from the non veg cooking. Paneer was also not fresh. Mango Lassi was sweet and concentrated. Garlic Naan was ok. Not extraordinary. It was also not well done. Again expectations may be high because its the "Original" Rasoi but for vegetarians and jains they are not there. read more

Rasoi is a solid fixture on Newark Avenue in Jersey City, and I'm glad I had the chance to have lunch here today. Making my way in trying different restaurants on this Avenue, my visit to Jersey City usually accomplishes 3 things: 1. Picking up some necessities at Patel Bros market 2. Indian lunch or dinner 3. Completing it all by having a refreshing paan at Patel Paan Bar Rasoi, which means kitchen, basically displayed much of their kitchen as visible at the buffet stations. Their food was a combination of both Northern and Southern Indian styles. I usually am not equipped to eat much food at any buffets, but ordering a la carte (also offered at Rasoi) might be less practical in terms of price and variety. Their all-you-can-eat buffet was only about $10.99. My friend and I walked in around 1 p.m. and the place was quite filled with most, if not all, patrons hitting the buffet stations. There were two with most options being vegetarian. These were some of the selections: *papadum and the variety of chutneys * raita * channa salad * dal * basmati rice * pepper pakora * paneer jhalfrezi * sag * warm naan * chicken tikka * chicken tandoori * medu vada with the side sambar * pani puri (made by a woman as the individual eats it) One of my faves * gulab jamun * kheer I didn't try the two chicken dishes but they looked pretty good. Aside from what I outlined, there were a few missteps/dislikes with what we tried. I wasn't crazy for the pepper pakora since the coating was soggy and thick. My friend didn't like the channa salad pointing out that something (maybe the tomatoes?) was rancid and tainted the entire salad. Thankfully, I didn't try it. Also, the paneer pan was empty for quite a while and we had to ask several times if there would be a refill to the buffet table. The food at Rasoi was very good, ambiance was better than average compared to other restaurants along Newark Avenue, restroom was clean and service was pretty good. Overall, Rasoi is a keeper and I'd love to return for an a la carte meal or perhaps a dinner buffet. They also have a decent sized bar.
