In a small rundown shop in Journal Square, I had the best dosa of my life. Went on a Wednesday afternoon at 3 PM. Store was empty except for another group. Ordered a Masala Dosa. The dosa came out in 10 minutes which is reasonable. It was freshly made and the batter/dough was excellent. It reminded me of my mother's dosa. Fluffy, crispy, but not paper thin. The masala and podi on the inside was fabulous. It was with enough chutney on the side but the kicker was the sambar. They had sambar in a massive warming pot by the register. Tasty, tangy, and not too spicy. I had 2 cups of it with my singular dosa. All their tiffin products seemed delicious. In a heartbeat, I'd be back! read more

I've been to dosa hut twice now, and it's a very good authentic spot for dosas. I've tried the masala dosa and their gunpowder masala dosa. It comes out quickly with a side of 2 chutneys and bowl of sambar. I love a good sambar and they have a solid delicious one that pairs well with their dosas. The inside is casual, you can stop by for a quick bite. The masala dosa was $8 so it made for a good affordable weeknight meal. It's counter service and they have a friendly staff. The area has a lot of South Indian restaurants, but I don't feel inclined to try others because Dosa Hut consistently hits the spot. Overall, this place is good for the homesick South Indian. One who wants an authentic no-frills dosa. I will be coming back whenever I'm in the area! read more

Sad to say I never visited yesteryear Dosa Hut, so I'll take people's word that it was good back in the day--but you know what? Todayyear Dosa Hut is still pretty awesome, so I'm happy with that. If you want the most interesting flavor bomb in your mouth, try the Gunpowder Onion Chili Masala Dosa, which lives up to every part of its name (including the bang). The classic Butter Masala Dosa is as big and crispy as possible without breaking apart, while the Rava Masala Dosa offers a different-textured wrap that's just as exciting. I was too stuffed to try more than a bite of the Vada Pav, but remember it being fluffy and flavorful. Not sure I'll ever get around to having a full one since I'm going to be trying as many dosas as I can here every time I make the schlep over. Points also for freshly made Mango Lassi, though on a scale of milkshake to yogurt, it definitely leans on the yogurt side of thickness. Decor is just as minimal and bare bones as you'd expect for a restaurant with better things to worry about, but service was friendly and fast. Then again, we did come by after 2:30pm on a Sat. read more

Haven't tried many different menu items because the outstanding South Indian Thali always draws me in. There's a choice of three curries; the best options include potato bean and soya chunks. Short summary: Dosa Hut is great, Newark Avenue is a destination for authentic Indian dining. Wow. Dosa Hut is amazing. Please do yourself a favor and take a walk down the hill on Newark Avenue in JC, stopping at Dosa Hut near the top of the hill for a dosa as an appetizer (best if split with someone, they are large). Then, either try the other items here or continue down the avenue to one of the many other restaurants. I have not had the Dosa Hut's entrees; the Hut is all vegi. A dosa is a large crepe with various optional spices and fillings. You tear off pieces by hand and dip it, if you like, in a side of soup that comes with it. I'm not going to pretend to know much about dosas, I don't, but Indian friends have brought me here because they love it; I do too. There are more than dosas on the menu but that's all I've had. They are amazing. Don't worry if you are the only people there, it is a small place and sometimes that's how it is. Last weekend I had a masala dosa with potato (aloo), it was amazing, and I don't use the word lightly. It was an explosion of flavor. Really great. After the dosa, I recommend walking down the few blocks of Indian restaurants to pick a place for an entree. I'm a fan of the biryani places; there are also many vegetarian Indian restaurants from which to choose. read more

Dosa Hut has been in this area for a while. Its one of those places locals who know, goes regularly. We finally got a chance to visit them during lunch. I'm not so familiar with a lot of dosa and vegetarian cuisine, so I relied on pictures and what my stomach seems to like. Pictures really helped. We ordered a few items, including a dosa with potato. Dont think of a dosa as an appetizer. It is a meal on its own so order what looks good for you. Ask the attendant for recommendation as well. The food all came out relatively quickly. Fresh and well made. Spicy but not too spicy. Ask for the spice level and if you are sensitive to spicy food, this may not be your spot. Tip, gets ice cream at the end of the meal. Glad we were finally able to come in for a meal after passing it many time and saying "going to try them next time." Dosa Hut gets a recommendation. read more

We stopped here for lunch. This place has a few tables and are decent. You have to order the food at the counter. We got butter masala dosa and vada pav. The vada pav was really nice. The butter masala dosa was good as well. However, the sambar was really bad tasting and also the chutneys. Our kids got the mango lassi's and they were fine. If you are really craving dosa's and don't want to spend a lot..this the place to go..however be ready that you have to compromise on the overall quality for it. read more

Hidden gem. So tasty!!! Walked in with friends at 630 on a Monday night and by the time we left it was packed--- rightfully so! We got 3 Dosas, all delicious, samosas hot and crunchy just made BEST I'VE EVER HAD, two other appetizers I had never heard of both of which were phenomenal. We added a soup for a dollar yum We got a mango lassi, masala tea, and a masala lemonade all great. So 3 dishes, 3 apps, 1 soup, 3 drinks- everything was delicious and extremely reasonably priced. We left full and super satisfied. read more

I ordered South Indian vegetarian thaali to-go through Uber Eats. Came with rice, papad, rasam, sambhar, daal palak, kesari sweet and yoghurt chutney. This was basic. On top of it, you get to choose 2 veg curries amongst a list of 5. I chose Aloo dal and bhaingan curry. You have a choice between three chappatis or two parathas. I chose chappatis. Food came hot. It was not oily. Spice level was optimal. It was better than it's competitor Sapthagiri - oily, salty and pricier. I ordered Mango Mazza along with the thaali. Really good experience overall that I was busy enjoying and didn't take pics. read more

I walked in and felt I had returned to India! Incense was burning in front of a shrine to Ganesh - the Elephant God. I have been searching for a "real" Masala Dosa since I left India more than 15 years ago. I was not disappointed! The dosa itself was crispy, hot, and flavorful. The potato and spice filling was tasty and the sambal and both chutneys (coconut and something spicy) that accompanied the Dosa complimented it very well. I also ordered chai and it, too, was hot, spicy and delicious. Street parking was impossible! I ended up paying $3 to park but it was worth it for the opportunity to go back to India! 4 stars only because of the difficulty in getting to the place. The food deserves 5 stars! read more

This my first time having dosas from Thai particular place and I was not impressed. While the service was good, the flavor was not there. The samosa chat was tasty, although they over did it with the tamarind sauce. Overall it is a good place but there are better dosas in the same block. read more

Not authentic South Indian stuff. Ordered medu vada, Rava dosa. Vada was very dry and broke lose the entire time, it also had whole black peppers in the batter which definitely brought down the experience. Rava dosa was very dry, burnt and the chutneys tasted terrible. Sambar was okay. Will not return. Do not recommend at all! read more

My Indian boyfriend took me here to try a masala dosa for the first time, as he comes here with his family when they visit from India. It was a delicious Dosa and I fell in love with the masala potatoes which I need to figure out how to make at home. Everything is vegetarian here, so that is good or bad, depending on whether or not that will seem filling to you. You also unfortunately have to contend with dining on styrofoam plates with plastic utensils, in very basic dining surroundings with a messy kitchen. The prices are cheap, the menu and options for Dosa big, and you can go across the street down a ways and shop in the Indian grocery store, which makes it a nice day in Jersey City. read more

Quick. Good Masala Dosa. It was almost $14 which is normal these days. Decent amount of chutney Sambar and masala on side.

Food is very bland and the prices are way too high. Paid an extra $2 for ghee and $2.00 for red chutney that typically comes with a dosa meal; not sure why it wasn't included and I charged for it. read more

Dosa Hut - two plates of food on a table - Indian Near Me - Jersey City, New Jersey

I have mixed feelings about this place. On the one hand, the thali is cheap and reasonably priced. On the other hand, the management here seems to have a "dash-in, dash-out" mentality; they only want your money and don't want you to linger in the restaurant. They tell you there is no wi-fi for customers even though they do indeed have a "Dosa-Hut" WiFi network. This "buy your food and get out" mentality is very off-putting. Would probably not recommend this as a place to go back to; there are other Indian restaurants on Newark Ave with more welcoming customer service. read more

Not that great. Sambar was OK but chutney was really bad. Idly was OK but vada was not . Tried the thali , it was bland . Overall lot of room for improvement. Can get much better, potential is there . read more

Food tastes good, is very reasonably priced. However I no longer go there coz of the quality of chutney and overall hygiene. The chutney with the dosas are too little on quantity and very watery. Also overall hygiene seems on the lower end. Tea was great. Dosa was nice too. Good and fast service. Homely Indian setting feels like home.

Dosa Hut is such a contradiction. The food and the establishment are polar opposites of each other, even though they should complement each other. Upon entering the restaurant, you will be greeted by a Hindu god, which now I consider it good luck for the restaurant... especially after tasting the wonderful food. My first impression was: what a dump! The place is definitely not well-kept. It's as run-down as the whole stretch of Little India on Newark Ave. Whoever painted the place did not care that he was painting "outside the lines," and the plates are made of styrofoam, and plastic. Not classy, but so tasty! I sat down and honestly I wanted to leave. I was thinking how I love that NYC has a grading system for restaurants, and that New Jersey should have the same system. Even the walls needed to be washed. I ordered a dosa, and my boyfriend had the chole poori. His plate came before mine (why not at the same time?) and... I FELL IN LOVE! I had poori before, but never with chole and raw onions. Poori is a fried bread, to be said simply, and the slight crunchiness of the bread, paired with the tenderness of the dough, with the flavor of the raw onions and the flavor-packed chickpeas was EXPLOSIVE! Yes, it beats my mother's homemade pasta, my bubbe's food, and anything I have ever experienced before! A wonderful fusion of flavors and textures! If I were a criminal and ended up on death row, my last meal on Earth would be chole poori. read more

We went here on a friend's recommendation and it's absolutely delicious at a very reasonable price. Uttapam was really good, light and fluffy. This surely is among the better south ibdian joints in Journal square. Food - Sambhar is delicious and is continuously replenished. Rava dosa - Is crispy and yet folds well to dip and eat aling with the sambhar. Idli - is good. Chutney - The coconut chutney better than most places in JSQ. can be better. Poori thali - I suggest its a to go as its quite filling. The sabji is quite oily. Service - Order at the counter and wait for your number to be called out. Ambience - Surely needs work done to improve hygiene. Cost - ~$13 per pax read more

The food and the quantity and quality is great. Worth the wait and the price for the amazing food.

Was here 2 days ago with a couple of friends. The food was decent, but the service was terrible. We were at the store at around 9:45PM and placed an order for six items. We had to go back to the woman at the counter from time to time to show our receipt and remind her to get our food. They have ZERO accountability and food is given off to anyone who claims it first, and not by the order number. Some of the items in our order were taken away by others, which meant that we had to wait longer. 4 out of the 6 items in our order were wrongly given to us. When we protested that they were not the items we ordered, we were given a choice to either take them or wait even longer. The lady at the counter got even more rude as time passed. This would count as one of my all time worst restaurant experiences. read more

This place is hands down 5 stars if it wasn't for the unnecessary rudeness of the person at front counter. I normally order out via one of the many meal delivery services to work. Yesterday however I decided to call ahead and pick it up myself. The order was ready within 15 minutes and packed for me when I arrived. Sambhar however was a bit cold for my taste and the onion chilli corriender uttapam was a little too well done. Nothing a microwave can't fix. Also I believe the size of the uttapam was a little smaller to accommodate the container it was put in. This is in comparison to what you'd normally get when eating in. I believe this is one of the most reasonably priced Dosa joints in Jersey City if not the best tasting ones. Always ask for extra red chutney! read more

Went here for dinner tonight with family. There was a lady screaming and telling that the sambhar is smelling and is diluted with water. German cockroach in masala dosa. I have been eating here with my two kids for a long time but to my disgust found a dead fried cockroach in the masala dosa I was feeding my 4 year old today , I just happen to notice the dead roach. They sure refunded the money for that one dosa but my point is they should close down the eatery for a while and get an exterminator and get pest control. I am taking it to health dept. A GrubHub order from Dosage Hut was my introduction to South Indian cuisine. Jersey City has no shortage of good subcontinental takeout places, but most tend to be Northern or Pakistani. Dosa Hut's flavours are authentic, delivery is relatively quick, and the amount of food you get for the money is absolutely staggering. I ordered a South India thali: 3 pieces of chapati, 3 curries (palak paneer {spinach and fresh cheese} veggie korma {mixed veggies in an almond cream sauce}, aloo mattar {potatoes and peas in a thick curry}), steamed daal, coconut chutney, tomato chutney, raita, and rice. More than enough for a filling dinner and 2 lunches. Paired with a mango lassi, and the meal came to $12. Highly recommended read more

MmmmmhmmmhMmHmMhmmmmm do i loooove me some Dosa! I'm a die hard indian food fan. South, north you name it. So i've always wanted to try southern indian food and Dosa Hut has been my first experience. What you could expect: A 10-15 minute wait for a long crispy, warm Dosa, and when you crack it in half (it's easier to eat), the potatoes and vegetables are piping hot and smothered in curry. The spices and (whatever you get in your dosa) are a hidden gem in the Dosa! :) *You can tell i'm very passionate haha Anywho, the Dosa comes with chutneys and free sambhar. Deeeeelivious, and only around 5 bucks! I usually get the Masala dosa. I've tried the rava masala and others, so I'm looking forward to trying all of them! Also- get a mango lassi to cool down that party in your mouth. Trust me- the lassi comes in handy plus it is delightful! Though the place is a bit sketchy, the food beats the place. Any place that has "Dosa" in its name gets three stars! But, they have to work much harder to earn any more... Let us get the good stuff out of the way first :). Supply chain: very efficient and orderly. Employees: smiling and customer-focused. When I review a (fast-food, low cost) place like this, I avoid trying to rate them on ambiance, decor and such - it is unfair to them to expect them to offer a meal for 8 bucks and be compared to four seasons or even for that matter any other upscale Indian restaurant. Now the food: the coconut chutney is my single important deciding factor in giving an establishment 5 stars. What is served here is an apology for a chutney. The Sambhar and dosas themselves are fairly standard - crisp but vaguely lacking in taste and the mildly sour "bite" that is the result of a well-prepared batter. And, out of the couple of occasions that I have eaten here, one has been a 4-star and another a 2-star experience in terms of taste alone. So much for consistency - and that is a problem because if in a mass-production factory like this, if they are not consistent, then there is really no reason anyone would come here. In this respect, the Dosa man in Washington square park takes the cake. I bet this place can do much better with their experience and locked in customer base (if you are in Newark avenue and sell Dosas, let's just say you will never run out of business). read more
