Suzy-Jo Donuts has been making awesome round dough since 1955, all in the domain of one family, and they have been successful enough to open two more stores in Limerick and East Norriton, PA. The reason for their longevity is simple - they bake great donuts. These babies are very traditional cake style creations with heavy icing or glaze, that sit like sweet stones in the belly. You have to love this approach because there is no compromise. Even my bag of four (2 vanilla frosted, 2 plain glazed) felt like twice as many in the sack. Each one is a meal by itself, especially with a mugga joe to ease it down the pipe. The frosting is from that earlier era - thick, sweet and indescribably delicious. First bite took me on a memory to childhood with my grandmother in Washington Heights on a shopping walk when we'd stop at the butcher, green grocer and as a treat for me, the baker, where she'd buy me a donut, cupcake or cookie as reward for accompanying her. That Lucious white cap on those donuts registered so deep in my psyche that its recall still makes me salivate. So it was this day. I can't and don't indulge like this often, but I was thankful for the opportunity this time. We needed a fourth location and most of the usual city suspects are not open on Wednesdays. Suzy-Jo has good reviews and the Bridgeport location isn't a bad trip. Yes, even my beloved buttercream filled donut from Viking Pastries in Ardmore has just been downgraded. That is saying something, my friends. I stopped in this morning on my way to Jury Duty in Norristown. The shop itself looks just like every old school bakery you've ever been in. Not too fancy, not glitzy, warm and smelling of heaven. They have a very broad selection of donuts. I chose a powdered Bavarian Creme, Coconut and a Glazed, so I could get a broad sense of their offerings. Bavarian Creme was filled donut heaven. No icky artificial "creme". It was not overly sweet, great texture, enrobed by the donut cake. Coconut donut was likewise well balanced, great taste and flavor. Glazed was not soggy (a pet peeve), well sugared with a nice yeasty flavor. Service was friendly and prompt, prices were very reasonable as well. I'm told the cream rolls are popular, as are the cherry cream and chocolate covered Bavarian. I will definitely be back to sample these for the sake of all you Yelpers. Filled donuts , and I mean they are filled, where others give it one shot where you need to eat two thirds of the donut just to find the filling. Its doesn't matter where you bite into it your gonna taste the filling. I loved the peanut butter fluff, along with the Bavarian (aka. Boston Cream ). This is a great establishment, great staff , fresh coffee, and a warm inviting smell of fresh donuts ! Having moved to the area 2 years ago, I had driven by Suzy-Jo's numerous times, but had never gone in. I'm not sure what I was waiting for! The shop is small, but it gives you that perfect small-town donut shop feel. The staff is friendly and patient- I've taken my kids / niece in and they gave them donut holes and spoke to them, making them feel extra special. On top of that, the donuts are delicious, light, fluffy and fresh - and not to mention huge!! My niece's sprinkle donut took up most of her plate! I've tried a few different flavors (we even had a donut-off between my boss's favorite shop and Suzy Jo's - I can't remember who won, we were all on a sugar high!) - they'be all been great so far. I'm not a fan of the bacon, but that's just me, it's not my cup of tea. There is no competition with Suzy-Jo Donuts. Dunkin Donuts, WaWa, Starbucks, and even the coveted Tim Horton's (for all you Canadians) pale in comparison. I can't say for sure how Krispy Kreme measures up as I've admittedly never been to a brick and mortar Krispy Kreme store. Ambler Donuts is also on my list to compare. Their coffee is fine if a bit weak, but it suffices if I don't make my own coffee on a Suzy-Jo Day. (Yes, we have Suzy-Jo days approximately once a week and they're almost as good as Christmas.) If we're being honest, I might go to Starbucks or Palm Tree Market for a stronger cup if I had the time. The absolutly nasty woman behind the counter kept going on and on about it not being her fault, it was my problem, wouldn't look at the PAID receipt, and when I asked her to stop talking and just pack the donuts, because I had a very serious time deadline, she didn't like my attitude so she CALLED THE POLICE on me. I have never been so horrifically treated in my life, I actually had a full blown panic attack in the store while she rolled her eyes at me. As far back as I can remember, there was this little spot in Bridgeport that was discussed by my co-workers as having the best donuts around. Since I'm a huge fan of said treat, I knew I had to make my way over into this lesser-known part of town. For some reason, I remember a raspberry filled donut, but I'm not sure they still carry it. But I definitely remember this; even though I'm not the largest raspberry fan. This filling was fresh, and there was always the ideal amount, never too much that spilled out, or that thin sliver that you found halfway through your donut.
