Sushi Ya was recommended to me by my uncle and I've been hooked ever since. I always order out and so the staff always has my order prepped and ready. The restaurant offers up a nice cozy place to have lunch with co-workers during the day. You can never go wrong with the lunch special... The sushi rolls are amazing... Always fresh. Eh, not my favorite... I had worked a tad late and got home around 7:45/8:00. My boyfriend and I intended to go to Press, but there was a wait and we were both really hungry for dinner (after trying to park, it was almost 9:00). We saw Sushi Ya and thought we'd try it out. We love sushi, so we were excited! It didn't look like there was much of a wait, so we thought it'd be perfect! Maybe because we love sushi so much and have been to quite a few restaurants, we were disappointed. The furniture looked a little dated, my booth seat had a big square of black tape to close up a big hole. Their selection was ok, nothing fantastic compared to where we've been before, and the prices for what they offered was high in my personal opinion. I even suggested we leave and go elsewhere before placing our order. We will say they had some interesting appetizers that set them apart from other sushi spots we've been to before. We tried the sushi tartar - yummy! Then the dim, colored lighting started bothering my boyfriends eyes and he was having a really tough time focusing. We ate our rolls and left shortly after. Came here with my family for a late dinner and unfortunately we had an overall unpleasant experience. The food itself wasn't great, but to add to that we spent a good part of the night waving away gnats that were circling our table. In addition the staff decided to start cleaning while we were in the middle of our meal and mopped all around where we sat which wasn't cool, but to add to that, the smell of the cleaning agent was super strong and the place smelled of a very intense Lysol. First time here. Came for lunch about 3pm on a Monday. I was the only patron when I arrived. I ordered the lunch special (ends at 3:30-cool!) chicken teriyaki. It was tasty and a good proportion also. I have no complaints considering I had the staff to myself so service was no problem Had a plum wine and lunch for only $14. Sushi Ya has maintained substantial portions and fresh fish throughout plenty of adversity over the years. The oldest sushi restaurant in Rockville Centre stays current with a big list of special rolls featuring numerous dragon rolls and a roll for named for every month of the year. Owned by a small family trying to make ends meet they are always very appreciative of my business and I am happy to support them. Let me paint the picture for you. Friday night, moderately full restaurant. (We had to wait maybe 5 minutes for a table) so definitely busy but not crazy. We get seated and as soon as we sat down, we noticed the table next to us very perturbed. At first we thought, maybe they just having a bad day but the more we sit here, I start to hear one of them say, "should we just leave?" And then I see it, they haven't been served water, they haven't taken their order and they have been sitting there for a good 15 minutes at least and no waiter has come over to them. This should have clued me in to our experience. They just got up and walked out. We should have followed suit, but we ultimately opted to stay. 15 minutes go by and they reseat all the tables around us. Another 10 minutes and still nothing, the waiter continues to walk by us and not stopping. Then finally the table that sat down after us gets their order taken. I was flabbergasted. He literally walked by us at least 4 times and nothing. Finally, I guess the manager sees how annoyed we are and takes our order. As I sit here literally still waiting for our food over 60 minutes after we walked in, I am still annoyed. If it had not been for the fact that I have a pregnant wife,a hungry toddler. I would have left. But it's Rockville center on a Friday night. All the other places are packed and I am not waiting another hour to be seated. Not sure if this is just and off night for them or what. But I will definitely not eat here again! read more

I came here with my significant other on a date and we had a good experience. I ordered the plum wine and that wine was so strong. It was only 5 bucks and gave me a strong buzz. Then we ordered the miso soups with a bento box of chicken teriyaki. The food was so good. The decor was nice but the booths need to be replaced. They had holes in it fixed with black tape which was tacky. Also some tiles were broken and they fixed with tape. They need to put some money in the place and not be cheap. However, the service was good and the food was so tasty. I also enjoyed the fried green tea ice cream! It was so tasty and a nice treat to end the date. Prices were decent and I would recommend. I've had my share of sushi in Long Beach, Rockville Centre, and Lynbrook... sushi ya has been consistently delicious and fresh EVERY time I order from them. For the food quality, the price point is cheap. Definitely a casual place. Service and decor is okay. Eating there is FAST, even with a group you can be in and out in under an hour. Since Fhoo closed I had to find a new sushi place decided to try Sushi Ya and I'm glad I did we ordered the baby octopus, sashimi tuna, king crab, scallop and ikura, Aloha roll and the February roll all exceptional! My only complaint is the delivery guy didn't come upstairs to make the delivery there was plenty of parking. I've never ordered delivery and had to go get it downstairs that just sucks and is a total inconvenience for me. If I wanted to go outside I would've just gone to the restaurant I have no problem ordering again but if they can't make the delivery to my door I'll pass read more

This is my "Go To" place for sushi in the area. Always fresh, always tasty and lots of variety. My wife and I have been going here from it's earlier Merrick Rd. location. It's a family owned establishment and they take great pride in putting out a great product. We really like the Kellman roll, Rainbow roll,RVC roll, The tuna platter appetizer. If you want an HONEST REVIEW read this one! Normally i wouldn't bother writing a review for a restaurant out of the city or the areas that frequent, but I felt like I had to write a review for Sushi Ya to do it justice because I was appalled at some of these suspect reviews... First of all, by chatting with the owner who was not only friendly but so sweet and attentive, I found that there are 4 other sushi restaurants in the area which makes for pretty stiff competition. No wonder I see some negative reviews from totally unreliable Yelpers. Also, the owner informed us that he only owns ONE restaurant which is this one in Rockville Center. The other Sushi Ya's are not affiliated. To address the worm review... in the 22 years of eating fish has he EVER seen a sushi chef cut and filet the fish? There is no way a worm could've gotten in between his fish unless the worm bore into it in which the cutter would've seen the damage in the flesh that the worm caused. Sure, you can say the worm was that tiny but really? How is it that his ONE piece of fish had a worm it in? And it also coincidentally perfectly fit into his ONE piece of fish. I find that pretty hard to believe that he seemed to have missed the worm also with his one perfect bite... ummmmm what? Seems pretty suspect to me. Oh, and he has only 2 reviews and both were on the same day? Definitely suspect. Just sayin' Anyway on to the food... 4 stars for the food and 5 stars for the fish. We ordered a bunch of appetizers including the beef negimaki, fried chicken, edamame and seaweed salad. The beef negimaki and chicken were great and prepared well. Seaweed salad and edamame are pretty standard but they were good as well. Miso soup was strong and not watered down, the waitress is really Japanease and speaks fluent Japanese. She's totally sweet and our tea and water never went empty. For mains my bf and I ordered a sashimi deluxe and 2 rolls, the Susan roll and the Sushi Ya #3, sister had the sushi sashimi combo and OMG!! It was some of the best cuts of fish I've had, even better that many places in the city. Buttery cuts of fish that I swear was just plucked from the sea and for $20 a platter it was soooooo worth it. I also had a piece of uni (sea urchin) which is a huuuge sign of how fresh the fish is and it was amazing, better than that pale yellow stuff I always get in the city. This uni was great quality and bursting with the sea. I hope you guys give Sushi Ya a try, I hate it when people give BS reviews, it really hurts a business especially a neighborhood joint. This is going to be a short & brief review.....I did not enjoy this place at all. Starting from the service to the ambiance to the food....1 star. I'm very picky when it comes to sushi, and I make it my point to order sushi (not rolls) when I go to Japanese sushi restaurants for the first time to determine whether it'll be worth a second visit. The sushi here is horrible....thick chewy slices of fish that you can barely eat in one bite. They were not fresh at all, with a bit of foul fishy smell. My BF saw the expression on my face after my first bite, and he told me to stop eating because he can tell I hated it! I really felt bad about that, but their sushi was unedible to me. Came in around 7:15pm on a Friday night to grab a quick bite. They told us it would be a few minutes wait which is no big deal. Once we get seated we asked for a booster seat or high chair for our toddler. They said ok and never returned. After several minutes of watching them walk back and forth we went to get our own seat from our car. Two girls sat next to us talking amongst themselves and kept looking for a waiter to place their order. After maybe another 10-15 minutes the two girls get up and walk out. That's when the cashier comes over and asks us what we want to drink. They have nothing for toddlers so my husband had to go back out to get a drink for her. They bring our drinks and walk off. Another 10-15 minutes and the waiter decides to ask the table behind who came in after us what they would like to drink. They immediately started placing their order. We were there at least 30 minutes waiting already and still nothing...... If it wasn't for the 2 sodas on our table we would have left. The waiter kept walking AROUND us as if we weren't even seated there. FINALLY the cashier comes back and takes our order. I don't even want to say how long we had to wait for our food. I never knew making 4 rolls would take 30 minutes. The food wasn't even worth the wait. I asked for a check and that took another 15 minutes. All in all we spent almost 2 hours in there and I could not be more unsatisfied with the service and food. Next time I'm just going to go to Karusaki who have better food and waiters who actually care whether or not you would come back............ read more

Sushiya is alright, but their prices are what really make me go there. Everything is on the cheaper side in comparison to other local joints. Their RVC Roll, Black Dragon Roll, and Gyoza are my staples. As far as service goes, I guess you get what you pay for... when ordering the same rolls every visit you know exactly what should be in each. Lately, i've been getting random inserts of pineapple and avocado amongst other unknowns. One time i ordered for take out and while i was waiting for my order to be completed, the wife/owner had given my roll away to a women who had already paid for and received her order in completion and had ordered the same thing after the fact. The wife/owner just smiled and told me to wait for MY ROLL?! Upon bringing this up to the husband/owner on my next take out visit he just laughed. The next and final time i ordered from them he told me 20 minutes and when i got there 30 minutes later he laughed and told me he had forgotten to put the order in. If you are a pure sushi eater, this is the place for you. You can sit on the sushi bar and ask the chef to make you the most fresh sushi or sashimi. You don't eat raw fish like my mom. Don't need to worry about it. Sushiya has a large selection of kitchen food as well. My mom and my sister love the beef teriyaki and Seafood combo teriyaki. This is actually my go-to sushi place whenever I'm in Rockville Centre. I've seen them improve over the years - I've been visiting this place for 2 years now. During my experiences here, the wait staff has always been friendly to me and my friends. We received warm towels to wipe our hands on before we ate, and the wait staff made sure we were attended to. The sushi has good presentation and is very well-made. It is not the absolute BEST quality but it is much better than other sushi places that I've tried. I suggest trying the JB roll and the Eel/Avocado roll - they're fantastic! The fried ice cream is okay, I've had better. Also, skip out on the miso soup. The waitress was friendly and always made herself available. We were given complementary cups of green tea, which was perfect for the cold weather. I ordered one of the specialty rolls and my friend ordered a la carte. My specialty roll was good. The portions are big so I did not finish. My go-to Sushi spot !! They really hung in there during the shutdown, as their takeout orders lose NOTHING on the way home. I always go with the Sushi/Sashimi for two, and if it's cold -- the Miso soup ( which is spot on ) and if hot outside -- the ginger salad. I get a spicy tuna roll as well, and there is a LOT of tuna in there ( very little rice ). Last night I went with an octopus appetizer as well. Usually order once every 7-10 days on average, but miss my meals when away longer than that. If you do take out, you're better off parking in the back. Enjoy ! read more

Here it is. I always sit at the sushi bar simply because i enjoy watching the SUSHI MASTERS work there magic. I ordered the SUSHI/SASHIMI COMBO. The quality of the fish was superb, The temperature was right on the money, The taste was excellent. I ordered the GYOZA (squid) grilled with ginger sauce instead of the teriyaki sauce and it was great. Tony is one of the owners working behind the sushi bar and if you can get him to prepare your sushi it's quite the experience he is a Master.
