Sushi X is an unsuspecting, nice place inside. It feels dark and intimate, with comfy booths lining the walls. We went for the All You Can Eat menu and ordered all the usual favorites, like salads, hot kitchen appetizers, sashimi, and specialty rolls. Honestly, the food was great. Everything was fresh and flavorful, and there really wasn't anything we didn't like. However, I do have a few gripes. The price was $31.95, and it stays the same price for lunch and dinner. I really think they should have a cheaper lunch price because it's hard to justify that much money when there are other spots around that offer an even bigger menu for ten dollars less. The biggest issue for me was their policy on food waste. In the eight years I have been hitting up sushi spots, I have never seen a place act this way. We had about four or five pieces of sushi left over, and they told us we had to eat at least two more of them or they would charge us extra. It felt like a bluff, but they were serious. It honestly felt like being pressured over a couple of pieces of sushi when you are already paying top tier prices, and it left a bad taste in my mouth for the rest of the night. I know some people rave about the quality here, like the pepper tuna that Christina S. loves, but because of how that last interaction went, I probably won't be back. I was really wanting sushi, and I've been wanting to try this place out for quite some time. It was just before 3 o'clock, so I made the lunch special timeframe. Although I'm not crazy about miso soup or the salad, I was very pleased to see that they offer both as some places offer one or the other. Although they're not my favorite, miso soup on a day like today is very comforting, and the salad is an amazing palate cleanser. I got the three roll special, with a Philadelphia roll, spicy crab roll and the avocado cucumber roll. 18 piece pieces altogether with the wasabi and ginger. Sushi X is an AYCE establishment. I'm not sure what their rules or policies are, as I got my food to go. I don't think AYCE is for me, as I've had three pieces of each roll and I am already nice and full. The woman who greeted me was very nice, and the establishment was clean but quaint. Ample parking. It's also in a great location in my opinion. Savin Rock Beach is just behind the restaurant in walking distance and if it weren't 24° outside, that would be a nice stroll to take after eating. Although this review is about this restaurant specifically, I actually recommend exploring the entire area because there are a lot of hidden gems and diverse culinary offerings within walking distance from Italian, to seafood and Mexican to name a few. The best AYCE sushi spot here in CT hands down. It's not a giant space but it's big enough for groups or date night and sometimes recommend reservations on weekends. The pepper tuna is my absolute favorite because it's thinly sliced and on the smaller sized but it's served with a ponzu sauce and a wasabi drizzle. I could eat like 50 of them. Three of us went for dinner around 6:30 pm on a Thursday night. Nice ambiance - lots of tv monitors all around, high ceiling, bright space. They have a all-you-can-eat sushi/dim sum deal dinner all day/every day. Includes soup dumplings which we love. But we didn't have time to try it and we weren't planning on AYCE either so we just ordered some fried chicken, pork katsu, and some ramen. Food was generally very good and together with the nice setting this may be our new go to place for Asian food in the Fairfield, Southport area. I ordered the sashimi combo and soft shell crab roll. The sashimi was pretty bad quality. It wasn't terrible, but it definitely wasn't good. The soft shell crab roll also had a strange and unpleasant taste. Finally, the service was pretty bad. The server just wasn't around very much. I watched my soft shell crab sit on the sushi counter for 10 minutes before they brought it over. We had finished most of the rest of our food. And then the server poured water into my cousin 's glass of lemonade. I pointed out to her that the glass had been his lemonade and asked her politely if she could get him another glass. I've been going to Sushi X for years time for me to finally write a review. 4 Stars All Day. We were a party of 4 tonight and they seated us right away, were very friendly and accommodating. The food is great mainly because they have so many choices of appetizers, soups, salads and a bunch of hot kitchen items along with the sushi and sashimi. And it is all included in the price. Of course the sushi and sashimi are the stars of the show but the rest is great too. Some of the stand out options for me are tuna tarter, kani salad, and rock shrimp. As for the sushi I like all of their specialty rolls which mix multiple types of fish & different tastes & textures. I'm really a sashimi fan as well. I tried to take pictures throughout the meal but only got maybe a quarter of what we ate. Sorry but it was good and we were hungry. Sushi X has always been really good option. It's not the cheapest but definitely worth the value if you can eat a decent amount. There are people who think all you can eat sushi quality is poor but I will say I have been to very expensive sushi restaurants that have the highest reviews and I don't taste the difference. Plus I eat so much it would cost me like $100+ to eat a regular sushi place and be full. Now don't get it twisted if you go to a buffet place that happens to serve sushi they suck and that is poor quality sushi. That is not what this is. My friends and I really enjoyed this experience. When we went we were sat down quickly and the all you can eat was easy to navigate. The waitress was very nice, she announced to us everything we were eating as it was our first time. The food was great, the portions were a good size and we didn't feel pressured to eat everything on our plates like other places. Because the portions were so small we ate a lot more, kinda like a taste testing vibe. Been going here for years. In the past, the food has been good, ambiance is fine, and the service has always been somewhat sub par. Decided to go this week after not going there for a while, was highly disappointed and will not be returning. It's always been a little pricey but given the "all you can eat" sushi & kitchen menu, that's expected. For the cost, you expect the food quality to match the prices. We already knew the rules of "pay for leftovers" so we knew to pace the ordering. We should have known there was a decline when we walked in at 6:40 pm on a weekend night and the normally packed restaurant had many open tables. The next signs were the change to using cheap plastic plates for customers, the tempura served in a cardboard fast food looking container, and needing to request soy sauce for our table. The sushi still came out on serving boards, but the food was just okay and very disappointing compared to previous visits. They seemed to be using more rice and less fish than in the past. The service hasn't improved. It could come across to some as being very attentive when it's actually them keeping tabs on what you're eating and it seems like they're trying to make sure customers aren't bagging the "not allowed" extras to take home. They literally snatched the salad bowl away when I was still eating it. It's not an enjoyable experience when you feel like the help has been told to keep costs down no matter what and being heavily monitored on what should be an enjoyable night out especially for the price. There are no better words in the English language than "All You Can Eat Sushi" Upside: Do I even have to mention it? All you can eat sushi. And a nice variety of it for $20 - $25 a person. I went with friends and was upset that I hadn't heard about the place before. I love the fact that they are huge sticklers of waste. They will not bring you more sushi until you have cleaned your plates and if you have to pay to take leftovers home. There's something about it that I respect. Downside: It's not the greatest when it comes to service but in an environment where it's AYCE, you really can't expect 5 Star service. I've read some complaints regarding food size, staff, and leftover charges, and for what it's worth I'd like to address them: ~ Many all you can eat sushi places offer small portions in an attempt to cut down on waste. SO much gets wasted when people arrive extra hungry and over order, so who can blame them for the portions? The idea is to try a little of a lot of different things and ORDER AGAIN for more if you want it. We've gone and placed 6 orders before, that's what you're supposed to do! ~ My experience with the staff has always been wonderful. What I will say, and Sushi X is not alone in this, is some of the staff don't speak English very well. This is honestly the case with a lot of restaurants serving food from other counties. Sometimes, though, language barriers can cause people to think the server is being rude when really they are communicating as best they can. ~ Yes they charge you for leaving food (as many all you can eat places do, again, to cut down on waste), so always make sure you can actually finish what you order. I love the shrimp tempura because for the AYCE price, you can order A LOT! when you go to a regular restaurant you pay around a minimum of $10 for 2 pieces of shrimp tempura lol but if you go to this joint, you can get as much as you want(also made to order so guaranteed fresh) The sushi's pretty good... a lot of variety to pick from but always note that don't order too much because they will charge you extra if you don't finish what you order! So, better off ordering a bunch of times rather than getting a big one!! The only thing that's keeping me from rating this with 5stars is because of the customer service. The staff is pretty good at your orders but sometimes they just rush you and just grabs your plate even though you're not even done with your food. I have been going to Sushi X pretty much since they have opened. I do not know why it has taken me so long to write a review, but after today I felt it was necessary. Every one of the employees is friendly, helpful, and welcoming into the restaurant. It as not busy for a Saturday evening at 6pm which I was surprised about and we were seated relatively quickly. Service was great with quick drink orders taken and delivered and food orders were taken as soon as they were ready. Soon food started to flow out of the kitchen and from the sushi bar. We ordered edamame, gyoza, tuna tartar, ribs, and rock shrimp spicy seaweed salad, and a house salad to start. Everything was good, not great, but good, nothing really stood out. I did notice that the portion sizes were quite small. There was about a tablespoons worth of seaweed salad and not much more than that of the tuna tartar. Some of the rock shrimp were not whole and only pieces of fried shrimp. I have been going for a long time and the portion sizes were never so small. I ordered some sashimi and 3 rolls. It really was all very bland, which I was very surprised about. I was very disappointed. The food here in the past has been plentiful and delicious, today was not the case. I would like to give them a pass but it seems other reviews are starting to look the same. Other than the food, the service was good and prompt. My overall experience here was alright. It's another AYCE sushi place located in West Haven for about $22 for weekdays and $25 for weekends. There are two menus: kitchen and sushi menu. They had kalbi ribs which were pretty decent. Their food isn't bad as well. However, they messed up our orders twice. They omitted at least 3 different rolls for each menu. Then when they were clearing some plates while we were eating she reached over our food with a already dirty plate in hand with sauce on it to get an empty plate on our table. I watched with wide eyes as I saw the sauce on the dirty plate in her hand slide around and almost fly onto our sushi. It was pretty gross to see how she handled picking up plates and it could've gotten worse. The service wasn't bad and got our cups refilled with water in a decent time. The restaurant and bathrooms were also pretty clean. The restaurant is located in a plaza that is about a 10 minutes walk away from the beach. I dont like to leave negative reviews but I think patrons, especially those with children should be aware. If your child happens to be over 4ft they will be charged the adult price regardless of their age. I have never heard of such a thing and it was never explained. There apparently is a yardstick by the front door to measure your child. Insane in my opinion. There is no way that my 8 yr old child would eat the same amount as an adult, regardless of her height. They also charged us a $25 "service fee". We were a party of 4 adults and 1 child. I'm assuming gratuity? Also never explained. We tried this restaurant again in hopes that maybe something improved. The food was great, but we got cut off and in the rudest possible way. When you advertise "All you can eat", most customers assume it means, order until you are content. We are by no means heavy eaters. After 3 servings of the pepper tuna, the restaurant made us wait at our seats thinking a 4th was on its way for about 35 min. After that time the manager comes up to us and asks "Are you all set?". My fiance politely says, no, we are waiting on a house salad and a pepper tuna dish. He says rudely, "We are out of pepper tuna, do you want the check?". This is where my fiance lost all faith in ever returning to this place and even went as far as writing a note on the check, exclaiming their horrible service. I understand that maybe that is true, I don't believe that they were out because we were sitting next to the chef's and we were the only patrons ordering pepper tuna there. Anyway, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. Lets agree that they really were out, why would they let us sit there for 35 min waiting and not inform us. And what about the salad we ordered and never received, it's a salad, I know they weren't out of that! Moving on, between that experience and the smug and rude treatment from all the waiters and waitresses, we wouldn't return to this restaurant if they literally paid us. It isn't worth the aggravation. It's a shame how customer service is such a rare commodity. For $25 a plate, you would expect to be able to order what you want. I would highly recommend NOT eating here. If you do, don't go in with high expectations of service. Just expect someone to grab your menu, drop off food and then when they decide you've had enough, be told you have to leave. The food wasn't worth the treatment. The one pleasant surprise was the seaweed salad - tasty, saucy, definitely not your typical seaweed salad. The fish was fresh and tasty, but not particularly mind-blowing or artistic. 3-stars for the weekday price of $20, the great service, and the variety of appetizers but 1-star for everything else. This place is your run of the mill Chinese-owned Japanese joint. The sushi is pretty tasteless, even the spicy tuna or the unagi drenched in sauce. The tuna tartare is hardly worthy of its name (it's just a pile of their "spicy tuna") and it's drowning in some overly sweet mango sauce. You can't go wrong with deep fried stuff and you know the Chinese know how to deep fry, but it's way too heavy after just a few dishes (the gyoza, crab rangoons, spring rolls). Surprisingly the BBQ beef ribs do the Korean marinade right, so highly recommend that dish. The pepper tuna is awesome but it definitely doesn't need the glob of mayo on it. The edamame is food, but a 9 yo couldn't mess up edamame. The tempura (and the katsu and popcorn shrimp) was so heavily battered, I felt like I was eating a general tsos chicken dish with all that batter and fried gunk. The wasabi comes out in a hot mess of a wet blob which was disgusting. The green tea ice cream was good but the red bean seemed really old (freezer burn?) and tasteless. The house salad and seaweed salad are your run of the mill stuff--can't go wrong there. The udon tastes like it's from an instant package. Oh and the miso soup reeked of fishiness, gross. Visited this establishment with a couple of girlfriends on a weekday night around 8:30pm. We partook in the all-you-can eat deal for a little over $20. My conclusion is that this is slightly better-than-average Asian buffet. The sushi wasn't impressive, but appetizer items like the tempura and Korean spareribs were okay (albeit pretty fatty). The sushi was fine, but definitely not like a real sushi bar, pay-per-roll, empty-your-wallet-for-sushi-delicousness. This place had tactics like use of krab, as opposed to crab. Also, some items like their peking duck weren't good. Nevertheless, for a bit over $20 I had more than enough to eat and ice cream for dessert (I recommend strawberry and coconut). Their kitchen items are fried/fatty but are alright, just be forewarned that a huge feeling of self-induced guilt will likely follow your meal. Very very bad food. All you can sushi there can be so deceiving. Their Peking duck is basically a thin piece of duck or some other type of skin on a bun. Grilled ribs are way too hard and stale. The sashimis are so so tiny. When you can't finish their unappealing and inedible food they get mad at you and make you pay for it. Please don't go there for all you can eat, I wouldn't even recommend to go for anything else. It's a no no for me. Never ever again. read more

Unassuming from the outside but a hidden gem in West Haven! The service is great, the prices are fair. The all you can eat special is $23 during the week and $25 on the weekends. There are so many options and the fish is very fresh! Definitely worth a stop! read more
