Came in on a Sat afternoon. The place was empty. I was sat at the bar immediately, drink order taken and "real menu" was given. No stupid codes to scan!! The food was excellent. We had a spicy tuna roll, and the Maki rolls combo (letter c), which came with soup and salad- which were fresh and delicious. Also, we had the chicken yakatori, which was plump breast meat. Of all of that, the spicy salmon and the avocado rolls were my favorite. Each roll comes with 8 pieces. So why only 3 stars? Tonight was our first time there. Though we were told we were told they needed 35 minutes. We waited *over an hour* for our takeout meal. We finished eating at 10:45pm. Would we go back? I'm not sure... maybe? The restaurant was run by a tight team of 4. I could see that they work hard, pay attention to detail, and want to make food that keeps you coming back over and over. You like sushi but you hate spending $40 for three rolls? You and me both, so you are about to be happy that you came to Sushi Tong's Yelp page! Located in the heart of Smyrna at the intersection of Atlanta Road and Paces Ferry Road sits Sushi Tong. It is not much at first site as its part of a long standing shopping plaza that features a Mexican restaurant, a liquor store a few stores of differing varieties...but this is one place you DO NOT want to judge by its cover! I will say that my review is solely based off of the take out experience. I happened upon this place mid-Covid, so all my orders, four to be exact in the past few months, have been take out. While they do offer deliver, pick up is pretty seamless, so I make it happen. Service - Great! All my orders have been by phone, I call in, place my order and pick up. On their busy nights they preemptively tell you that the preparation time could be longer than what they quote you. They do give you the option to leave your number and they will call you once your order is ready. On my last trip, I was quoted 30 minutes, however it took 1 hour. I called at the 40 minutes mark and was greeted with a slew of genuine apologies and an update that there were 3 orders ahead of mine. I wasn't mad, they handled it perfectly and gave me the update I needed...I mean, I wanted my sushi, so it could have taken 1.5 hours to be honest. In addition to this experience, every time I make an order and pick up, whoever assists me is beyond friendly and helpful. Sushi - I mean, this is why you are here...so, here ya go! I am a creature of habit, so I tend to go for my main staples and with Sushi Tong, that is no different. However, I will say that I have tried a few of their specialty/House rolls and have been very happy! My order usually consists of... - Spicy Tuna Roll - $5.00 - Shrimp Tempura Roll - $5.95 - Yummy Yummy Roll or Fire Cracker Roll - $7.95/$8.95 I will say that the Yummy Yummy is my favorite specialty roll. It is basically a deep fried spicy tuna roll with a special sauce drizzled across it. To be honest, you had me at deep fried. The sushi is solid quality, even at the prices, well especially at the prices, as you would expect low grade and poor quality, but that is just not the case here. We picked up food from Sushi Tong on Friday night. We ordered online for pickup. The app told us that our order would be ready in 25 minutes, at 7:00. When I showed up at the restaurant after 7, I was told it would be ready in 15 minutes. Well...15 minutes turned into 45. Many other people and delivery drivers also had to wait. So, lesson learned. If ordering from Sushi Tong on a Friday, order early and be prepared to wait. The food, was awesome, as usual! So, it was worth the wait. We got 3 rolls and an appetizer order of dumplings. Sushi Tong is a humble mom and pop sushi restaurant located in an unassuming run-of-the-mill strip mall on the east side of Smyrna. It's not too far from the I-285 Perimeter (exit 18: Paces Ferry Road - Vinings). When it comes to sushi restaurants in Smyrna, I prefer Minato on Spring Rd (I think the quality of their sushi is better) and Maru Sushi on S Cobb Dr (for their lunch buffet), but Sushi Tong isn't bad. It's held its own for years in Smyrna's sushi scene -- I know that might not be saying much, but I think they're quite alright for the area, hence the four stars. I found out about Sushi Tong on Twitter. I follow retired professional wrestler Scott Hall (https://twitter.com/SCOTTHALLNWO) on Twitter. Scott Hall loves sushi and in 2013, he tweeted about Sushi Tong multiple times (https://twitter.com/search?l=&q=%22sushi%20tong%22%20from%3Ascotthallnwo&src=typd). Scott and his son Cody used to go to Sushi Tong regularly. I pulled up pictures of Scott Hall on my phone and showed it to our server, an older Asian lady who looked like an owner/manager type. She instantly recognized Scott Hall and said he and his son used to order bento boxes at Sushi Tong often. However, she hasn't seen the pair in a long time. I actually tweeted at Scott Hall and suggested he try Maru Sushi. He said he's been to Maru and it wasn't his favorite ("#Something #Fishy" https://twitter.com/SCOTTHALLNWO/status/360111502293860353). For those who don't know, Scott Hall became very popular in the WWF (now the WWE) in the early 90s as Razor Ramon and in the WCW in the mid 90s as an original member of the nWo. He was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2014. My friends and I visited Sushi Tong on a Friday right when they opened at 11:30am. This is a casual restaurant and it's not very big. There's a small sushi bar, TV, and several tables (no booths). The restaurant was quiet and, during our visit, there was no background music or other noise to dampen the conversations between customers. Therefore, it was very easy to hear the conversations going on at other tables. This didn't bother me, but I can see how this type of atmosphere could make some people feel a bit uncomfortable. Maybe the staff just hadn't gotten around to turning on the music for the day. Sushi Tong's lunch menu offers many affordable items. All lunches are served with a simple iceberg lettuce salad with ginger dressing and miso soup (standard for a Japanese restaurant in America). During our visit, sushi rolls were 2 for $7.95 and 3 for $11.95 (21 rolls to choose from); lunch (bento) boxes were $7.95 each; most lunch appetizers were $4.95 or less each; and most lunch entrees were $8.95 or less each. There was a nice variety on the box, app, and entree selections like oshinko (yellow Japanese pickles), unagi don (eel over rice), tonkatsu (fried pork cutlet), and beef negimaki (beef and scallion roll). There were also whiteboard specials. These consisted on teriyaki and sashimi dinner combos ($17-25 each), a couple Thai dishes, and a few sushi bar specials (sushi pizza and more rolls). Here's what we ordered: * Sushi pizza ($12.00) - crispy rice cake topped with fresh tuna, avocado, mango, imitation crab, special sauce, and masago (fish eggs) * Two lunch sashimi orders ($12.95 each) - tuna, white tuna (escolar), salmon, snapper, and imitation crab; comes with sushi rice * Lunch chirashi ($13.95) - tuna, white tuna (escolar), salmon, snapper, imitation crab, tamago (egg), seaweed salad, oshinko, masago, and furikake (dry Japanese seasoning) over sushi rice In general, the food was good. Everything was made to order by the lone sushi chef at the sushi bar and all of the ingredients were fresh. The sushi pizza was interesting. The pizza was piled high with yummy sushi toppings. It was cut into four pieces. The crispy rice cake was fried and served as a nice, hard, sturdy base for what seemed like a plethora of chopped ingredients. There was a generous amount of "special sauce" poured over just about everything. I usually don't like "Americanized" sauces on my sushi, but this one worked. It tasted like some sort of spicy mayo. Perhaps it was Sriracha mayo? The lunch sashimi and the lunch chirashi contained the exact same types of fish (as listed above). These are basic and standard fish when it comes to sushi and, at these prices, I'm not complaining. The slices of sashimi here were satisfyingly thick. It's COVID-19, everyone. Social distancing has begun to be our new normal. We're not quarantined but restaurants are not allowing any dine-ins, only takeout. I wanted affordable sushi, so chose Sushi-Tong because even though I've never physically seen the location, I've given them a try in takeout. They have been consistently tasty each time. Usually, I only order sushi but this time, added the shrimp fried rice. I should've taken a picture, it was so much that three people ate off it and there was still leftovers. It looked like the shrimp was actually lightly tempura fried which l hadn't seen before in fried rice. I didn't eat it but the consensus of the three was that it was good. Their food appears fresh, the tuna in the tuna rolls is more of the canned meat type but it's decent. My favorite is the Fuji Roll, I smile when I eat it. I moved from Orlando last year where I had my favorite locally, family owned sushi place. It's always so hard to find places that remind you or are similar to your old standbys. This place fits that bill for me. I've been 3 or 4 times in the last few months because it's so good. It's truly a family owned place and they are very nice welcoming there. The gentleman that makes the sushi is so talented and everything tastes amazing. The prices are also very reasonable (especially considering inflation). Sushi Tong is your friendly, neighborhood, mom & pop sushi shop in the middle of Smyrna. The place is small, intimate, and very quiet. They play no music, and the place seems empty most of the time. So when we were eating, we could hear a pin drop. I felt like our conversation could be heard on the other side of the restaurant. They have a few, basic Japanese entrees from roll combos, non-sushi entrees, and more. They had a special called "sushi pizza." It's raw fish on top of burnt rice with various sauces. I liked it. I loved the burned rice on the bottom as the crust. I also liked the various sashimi pieces on the pizza. I also tried their lunch sashimi combo. It came with snapper, tuna, salmon, artificial crab, and escolar. The combo also comes with your standard miso and salad. The sashimi was fine. It tasted fresh enough. It's not the best I've tasted, but for the price, it seemed fair. Obviously, the cuts seemed to be the cost-saving pieces. If you don't like Escolar, I would be aware and not order the sashimi combo. They seem to have only 2 people working there: The main sushi chef and his wife, who seemed to be the sole waitress while we were there. I read some of the bad reviews and they seem to echo a common theme that Sushi Tong didn't meet their expectations. I can understand this. But if you are looking for a run of the mill sushi place that serves eel sauce on California rolls, thin cuts of sashimi (who complains about thick pieces?), and mayonnaise laden ginger dressing, then this isn't the place for you.
