The cutest and smallest sushi place I've ever been to! Came on a Friday night with 1 other person. It was a little bit difficult to find as it's in a little plaza and downstairs. Luckily there are signs pointing to the direction. The inside is super cute and small! There were only around 8 two person tables. It is super cozy inside with vibrant decorations. The staff was so kind. I believe at the time we went, there was only 1 sushi chef so expect to wait a little longer than usual. As for the food, the sushi was SO fresh and the pieces were huge. Sushi time was a pleasant and incredible surprise Located in a very unassuming mall, from the outside the restaurant almost looks hidden and very easy to miss. Once you enter you realize it's a small Japanese haven that serves some incredible food. I went with two friends in a weekend early evening with no reservation and was able to get seated quickly. The chefs special along with many other items we ordered were absolutely fantastic. The service was top notch and felt authentic. I was blown away by my experience here and felt for the quality, the value was hard to beat especially in SF. Will be back here again! read more

Was on a trip to San Francisco a while back from Tokyo. Happened to crave some sushi so stopped by. Food was excellent but the portions are definitely on the small side. Even in Japan these days our portions are larger, unless you pick up side dishes. So we had to order more than a couple of dishes to fill up. Sushi Time is a great place to eat authentic food, but the owner/operator should reconsider their size portions. More akin to the portion sizes we used to have in Japan 20 years back. On another note, the place is small and not a place where once can stretch. But the ambiance was good. We felt relaxed there. read more

I stumbled upon Sushi Time as I was looking for a quick dinner before watching the premiere of Joy Ride at the Castro Theatre for CAAMFEST 2023. This intimate restaurant had a couple of other solo diners as well but service was very quick. They had a couple of takeout orders as well. The spider roll and speed racer roll were excellent but the walu nigiri and maguro zuke nigiri stood out. I wish they were offered at more places. Done pick up a few times. First time dinning in. This small restaurant had a sushi bar and a few tables. Intimate atmosphere and has been in the neighborhood for over 20 years. I ordered: Hamachi Toro. Sake Toro and spicy scallop roll. The fish were all very fresh. Rice was just a tad hard. But for the price good value. Lots of ppl calling in to order takeout so be prepared for a slight wait. Waiter was very attentive. This small place is very cute but has no windows. read more

Celebrated the end of travel projects with my company at this restaurant. The owner was there and took our orders. He was very sweet! It was about an hour until closing time. I ordered way too much like always because I love getting a big assortment of nigiri. All the fish was tasty and fresh. I loved the mackerel especially. However, I was a little disappointed the uni I ordered wasn't so tasty. Maybe it was a little old? It had a sort of sharp flavor like it was not fresh. Uni is more expensive so I was sad to be served uni that wasn't at its best. Otherwise, we had a great time! I love the indoor decor too. Very fun and festive. read more

Very hole-in-the-wall place! It's a super small restaurant with maybe max 20~ people inside so definitely come early. I came in with a group of 3 and we ordered the Barbie Roll, Astro Boy Roll, and BBQ Eel Roll. All were solid and worth the price! We wanted to order more but since the place got more busy, they told us that it would be a 30 minute wait so we just left. What a great hole in the wall (literally) spot for sushi! Was craving sushi and found this spot on a whim since it was nearby. What a hidden gem. I wouldn't have noticed Sushi Time on my own from the street, but I came here with a friend per word-of-mouth. This place is so cute, it reminds me of many sushi or noodle restaurants I saw in Japan in little obscure spots. You probably wouldn't stumble upon it yourself unless someone told you about it because it's located in the basement of a mini shopping complex or through an alleyway if entering on 16th street. The restaurant is very small, maybe 4-7 tables depending on if you put them together and about 10 seats at the bar. I'd recommend getting here early to avoid a wait. The menu is basic and there aren't a lot of vegetarian options but they do have a few different types of Miso soup. I liked the Kenchia miso soup which has many different vegetables so it fills you up and is heartier than basic miso soup. read more

Nice little hole-in-the-wall restaurant for sushi in the Castro. It's a cute little spot, tucked away on a side street off of Market. There are very few tables, so you may have to wait - I wouldn't recommended for larger groups. The sushi is solid, but nothing mindblowing. Sushi is fresh and very reasonably priced though! I like to order the nigiri and handrolls (not necessarily on the menu, but you can ask for it). They also typically have specials and we like to order off of that as well - the salmon belly in particular was so tender. The staff here are also friendly and quick! read more

Sushi Time is hands-down my favorite restaurant in SF. It's also my favorite place to take out-of-town guests because it has a great local vibe and an exceptional variety of delicious food choices. My current favorite treat is the baked muscles and crab. (It's making me seriously hungry just thinking about it.) It's a small space, with plenty of additional seating at the bar, in front of the chefs. It's a lovely space to hang out and talk with friends or my partner. It can still get kind of lively in there, depending on the crowd. But it's NOT a giant, white-noise restaurant, which I love. The owner, Masa, is very kind. And the perfect host. I've had so many joyful meals there. I can't say enough good about SushiTime. Can you actually feel love towards a restaurant? Apparently, yes. read more

I thought the prices were on the more expensive side, and the sushi rolls and nigiri sushi were better than the average sushi store but not something you'd find at a fine dining environment. But, the miso soup was good (3 different flavors) and the selection of rolls is more than the normal selection you'd get. We got the rainbow roll, sake mango roll, baked mussels and two pieces of hotate sushi. Everything was fresh and tasty. I would've appreciated more hot appetizers though! I think this my favorite sushi place in San Francisco. Go to Japan town for Shabu shabu or noodles. Your vegan friends will appreciate the vegan miso option. The seaweed salad, actually all the salads are super delish. The people next to us recommended the sake toro and hamachi toro and as they said it was " next level stuff" The place is small so better for couples. The tea selection is divine. So do you know about those sleeping tubes in Tokyo where Japanese businessmen too wasted on sake miss the last train to the 'burbs? They end up overnight in those little capsule-shaped compartments with their wives nary the wiser for their drunken escapades. I only bring those up because when I entered Sushi Time, that's what it feels like. I walked by the sandwich sign for the place all the time, so my curiosity got the best of me one evening and I gave it a try. Am I in the Ginza? It was a good thing I was there early on a Monday evening since I was their first solo customer. Even though they told me to sit anywhere, I sat at the end of the sushi bar assuming this place would fill up quickly. It did, and I was fairly well scrunched into my little space. Sleeping tube redux. The menu is full of sushi and sashimi treats though not quite as fanciful as Takara Sushi nearby. For a breather, I started with the no-risk $3.50 Edamame (photo: http://bit.ly/1Nupyg0). Pretty standard. I moved on to the $6.95 Kamikaze Roll, which turned out to be five pieces of yellowtail, avocado and scallion rolled in rice sprinkled with tobiko. For my entree, I ordered the $8.95 Baked Mussels, a quartet prepared almost like Oysters Rockefeller with the mussels mixed with crab meat, tobiko, panko crumbs and their own mayo sauce (photo: http://bit.ly/1HwlRrh). Even though it was fairly filling, they were just a bit too fussy for my taste. I probably should have gone for more rolls. Two young sushi makers were keeping busy in front of me, while one waitress handled the whole room. By the time I finished, I have to admit Sushi Time was a pretty adequate spot for a sushi fix in teh Castro, even if it does pale in comparison to the likes of Ino Sushi in Japantown or Akiko's on Bush in the FiDi. Unless you really, really want to eat in a sleeping tube. I don't think they let you sleep there though. This restaurant really didn't look like a sushi restaurant (or any type of restaurant) from outside, other than the sign that says "Sushi Time" around it. It looked like a glass tube of a metro train car or something sticking out from a wall. The entrance was small, with lots of Japanese decorations, and the fun, cheerful decoration continued inside all the way from the entrance to the back. We were greeted with very warm smile and welcome by Japanese owner and staff. I was super happy to see that it was operated by Japanese people, that meant that I was going to have some good, authentic sushi! Inside was a bit narrow, just like a train car. Even though it is located underground, the glass tube exterior brought in lots of light. In order to provide some privacy, they had bamboo and cloth covering on that side. Not many seating there, the sushi counter extended about half or a bit more than half of this "train car" shaped restaurant, and several tables and chairs behind it. Once it gets crowded, it can get a bit warm, since they don't have any window or good ventilation (they had a fan running at the back to provide some air flow). We went during the happy hour, and got some sashimi and sushi. They were fresh, nice portion, and very delicious. We were happy with everything we ordered, and even though the happy hour menu is not very much, but it was still worth it to go there for the happy hour. read more

Despite the weirdly generic name, I LOVED this tiny sushi spot. It is a little hard to find-- kind of underground in a random alleyway spot. We only found it because they gave a random sandwich sign on the street pointing towards the general direction of the entrance haha. The inside is very intimate, probably seating no more than 20. The three of us sat at the bar area, where we had a view of the chefs making their creations. Service staff was quick and courteous. The ambiance is cozy, romantic. Lots of quirky wall decor. Lots of tables of twos. I ordered the tekka don (tuna on rice with miso soup and side salad). It was a little pricey ($22) but I think well worth it. The tuna was absolutely delicious! Buttery and melt-in-your-mouth quality, atop perfectly seasoned sushi rice. Very simple but so delicious! I will be back!! The rice however was a little too stiff, and felt like it had been sitting out for a little too long. This is a super quirky, cozy and intimate spot. It's a little difficult to find if you're not paying attention -- it's located inside a dark alley almost. I found it by just paying attention to the actual address (2275 Market). There's a little sign inside the alley that will direct you to Sushi Time, just walk down the short stairs and you'll see it to your left! This place is definitely super tiny, so seating is limited. Service was quick and friendly. I was lucky enough to get a tight table but don't be surprised if you have to wait or sit at the bar! Sushi was great. The sashimi was very fresh ($8.25 for 3 pcs) but small portioned. I suggest getting nigiri if you want something raw -- the slice will be bigger (2 pcs for $5.25) I ordered the spicy salmon roll (roughly $7) and the oshinko roll ($3.50). Both were decent! This is a great spot if you want fast, fresh and delicious sushi for a fair price! Also very clean which is a plus. Definitely a cozy and nice, casual date place.
