This stylish Japanese BBQ seems incongruous to its suburban surroundings. The decor, menu and…read moreservice all seem to belong to an uppity city restaurant. Not that I'm complaining because where it's situated is convenient for me to get to plus there's easy parking. Shinbashi has a $35 all-you-can-eat Japanese BBQ which is always a popular option. I fyou go this route, make sure to try their fantastic wagyu and marble beef. However, my husband and I always splurge on their $99 Signature Selection for two. It includes these tasty additional extras like Bacon asparagus and Bacon rice cakes. There's also this buttery cheese, sweet potato dish which takes about twenty minutes to cook up on the BBQ but is worth the wait. The service here is great. They always remember to refill my green tea and there's this delicious complimentary soup which comes in a teapot that you can easily fill up on and ruin your dinner if you're not careful. If you live further afield, Shinbashi Yakiniku is definitely worth the drive out to Underwood.

Hidden away in Underwood near the Big Gun butcher, lives this Japanese BBQ place; Shinbashi. All…read moreyou can eat or a la carte (I recommend the latter), you won't leave empty stomached. Being a Japanese BBQ place you basically cook the meat on the hot plate in front of you and dip in delicious sauces before noming down. Staff are genuinely helpful. There's Japanese rice beer to match, though I didn't see how that was going to be consumed amongst the plethora of meats in front of me. Also good to know - the meat is delicious, because it is marbled with delicious fat. I went on a Tuesday night and it was packed. Defs popular amongst the locals.. Or those who know its there. So man up, make the drive, and give this place a go :)

Repeat visits have confirmed my initial impression of Su Life: the people make good food, but they…read morearen't actually that good at running a restaurant. They've opened late on me once, and another time they asked me to sit outside so they could leave and lock the door (I hope they picked up my plate later), even though it really wasn't that bad of a time (before 2:00). They are not big on staying open outside a very narrow range of hours. They also charge extra for rice, and managed to sell me a dish without reminding me of that only to have me rustle up change to pay for some rice once my dinner arrived without it. Their beaten up tables and tiny space offer little in the way of ambiance. But if you want a good fried tofu dish, you won't be disappointed. All the things I've ordered have been tasty, notably a sizzling tofu in black pepper sauce that did indeed sizzle nicely. They have plenty of other dishes that I would want to try, and no one's more of a sucker for all-vegetarian Asian restaurants than I am. Luckily for them, I sometimes have business in the area, so I probably will continue to eat here on occasion. That being said, I don't see how I can rate them any better than this, even though I do enjoy the food, as their prices are not low, and they have not got much else going for them.

Call it what you may, it has always been the deal breaker with my love for meat. Should I ever decide that it was time for me to go vegetarian, it would be because of tofu. I was raised on soy products being from Malaysian heritage... so it should really come as no surprise that everything from soft tofu cooked broth to your agedashi fried tofu to you hot pot tofu to you egg tofu, are all things that I have had many a love affair with. Sometimes at the same time (tsk tsk). So when I met Su Life, an instant bond took affect. There is nothing better than tofu than tofu imitating meat. How good is it to order some barbeque chinese pork (char siu) and have it come out, looking so delicious with its red tingy edges marinaded to perfection. How yummy it tastes when you have the first bite. How delightful when you know it's vegetarian tofu imitating pork so well you can hardly tell the truth. Su Life was that for me, they do the non-meats so well sometimes the texture is astounding...especially the fish. Looks just like it. Could have fooled me, and the idiot meat eater sitting on the next table thinking he was actually eating meat. Surprise! What a surprise Su Life was Yelpers. It may not be much to look at, but boy can it provide meat with a good run for its money.
