Sweet potato roll and salmon roll with imitation crab
    Mariel A.

I can't believe this is my first Sushi Mido review! I love love love this place!! Tonight for dinner I got the sweet potato roll, which had a great ratio of tempura to sweet potato. I also got the Salmon roll and requested to add imitation crab to it. They were more than happy to customize the roll for me and it came out great! The service was superb per usual. I was sat immediately and the wait staff were attentive the whole time. Sushi Mido never misses!

Overall, the sushi was pretty good and there were plenty of options to choose from as part of the all-you-can-eat deal including the rolls that sound like they are for dessert. The downside is that unlike many other places, nigiri, appetizers, and sashimi is not included in the deal but instead those are half of the regular price which is better than nothing. The crab rangoon was decent and so was the miso soup. The service was a little spotty and slow at times when it comes to ordering and receiving the food. Maybe I'll be back to try the dessert rolls.

Amazing vegan options. The price is way better than you will see at Blue sushi. It's a smaller location but it makes it feel comfy like you are real sushi bar. Not many liquor options but the server was very knowledgeable. I will definitely be back.

I've been looking for a new sushi spot since my favorite one closed down during COVID lockdowns. I'd heard recommendations of several places around KC and hadn't found one to fill the void of favorite sushi spot. That was until I FINALLY stopped into Sushi Mido for a weekday lunch. OMG! It took many years, but I have now discovered something to fill that hole in my heart where sushi is supposed to go! The staff was very friendly and there was a great dining area that allowed enough space between tables for you to feel comfortable. If you haven't had Sushi Mido...add it to your list now.

First time here. Not a big sushi or avocado eater, so asked for advice. Got the KC Chiefs roll per server's advice. Not very busy on a Tuesday evening around 7:30pm. Fried veggie eggrolls were my own idea -it was OK., only ate 1 of the 4 rolls. Family friendly, several tables with kids. Table next to me had two young kids new to sushi & their comments were hilarious! If I return, it will be for the lunch menu which comes with 2 sides.

The staff was incredibly friendly and quick. I liked everything I tried. If you can eat a lot of sushi then the all you can eat is a great experience. The sweet potato roll was shockingly delicious.

This place is located in downtown "old Shawnee" and it has just enough seating. I like how they take an hour to shut down and I'm assuming allow their employees to have lunch and/or prep. If you can get here before 3 it's the best time to taste more things for a lower price, or if you are a big eater the dinner might best suite you because there is an unlimited sushi roll option! I have been here 3 random times, once for dinner and twice for lunch and I can honestly say I see why this place is a staple. The sushi rolls are made fresh to order and all of the ingredients taste like they are prepped the same day. The sushi rolls are the star of the show and why I keep coming back, but their potstickers are superb as well! The service is always fast and efficient, you'll never have to ask for a refill or leave feeling hungry. As you all know I am big on consistency and this food is well worth the price no matter the day of the week or time of the day, Mido will get you taken care of during regular business hours

Calamari (with correct sauce on the right)

We stopped in for a quick weekday lunch and were immediately greeted & served by very friendly staff. We ordered gyoza & calamari for apps; both came quickly & very freshly fried, although the filling of the rolls was a bit mushy. The calamari were so fresh, and the waiter accidentally brought wrong sauce but apologized and very quickly brought the correct one. My husband ordered the bento box lunch with General Tso's chicken, miso soup and rolls, and was delighted. He said the chicken was fresh, tender and well-spiced. I ordered the 3 roll lunch special with hot & sour soup. The soup was great! Very fresh and ample mushrooms. I tried the pickled veggie roll, futomaki roll and rock & roll roll. All three were fresh beautiful. I wish the pickled veggie roll had had more than one kind (only daikon) but what was there, was good. Together, we ordered two apps and two lunch entrees that had sides (in total, more than we could finish!) for $53. This place is just right for a lunch spot, and we'll likely return, but it wouldn't suit a Japanese food purist- there are several American-Chinese menu items that look to be quite popular. In an east/west coast restaurant, this likely wouldn't be seen, but in the midwest it is unsurprising; both appropriate & well-executed! If you are a Japanese food lover and wanting to try a place that will also satisfy your non-Japanese food loving friends or family, Sushi Mido is a good place for you!

This is a great little all you can eat sushi joint. They're usually always busy so be prepared to wait. The staff is always friendly and efficient. They have a great sake selection. Usually the experience takes a couple of hours so I like to get a bottle to sip on throughout the night. You also get two appetizers. I like the edamame. Its not as filling as some of the other choices so I can still fill my face with plenty of sushi. I did try the crab Rangoon and it's ok. It's light and not huge but it's pretty oniony. When you go to select your rolls, you just mark it down on a sheet of paper and like magic, they appear. And then you repeat as many times as you'd like. But don't over order, they charge .75 a piece for any you don't eat. The sushi I've ordered has always been tasty and fresh. I've never had a roll that I didn't like. Definitely check them out.

Was craving sushi one day and decided to check out a new place sushi Mido, it happened to be right down the road. I ended up ordering a mango roll, which contains mango, crab meat and avocado on the inside, then it's topped with tuna and salmon. The tuna and salmon on top did not taste correct to me so I ended up having to take it off the top and leave it on the side unfortunately. We also ordered the Las Vegas roll which comes with six pieces. It has salmon, cream cheese, crab meat and it's fried. It was completely over done in the fryer. There was so much breading on the outside it made it uncomfortable to eat. I also tried the spicy crunchy crab roll. The spicy stuff seemed to be artificial red flakes that I've never seen before. I didn't think it made it taste spicy at all. It wasn't great overall.

Great sushi spot! I normally come for lunch because their lunch deals are awesome! Not a huge fan of the crab Rangoons but that's really a personal preference thing, there is nothing wrong with them. Service is good.

Loved this place! The food was good and the prices were great! The staff was very nice and the tables were tidy and clean. They have a couple good lunch deals but for dinner they have an all you can eat deal as well. I got a couple rolls and appetizers. They were all great! The crab Rangoon were good but could have been a little hotter. The gyoza was delicious. I also had the ginger salad. I tried the K.C. Chiefs roll, the spicy crunchy crab roll, and the Las Vegas roll. The kc chiefs roll was my favorite. It was simple but so good! The amount of crunch was perfect. I also really liked the spicy crunchy crab roll. The rolls were all great deals and I will definitely be back soon!

Then we sat down at the teppanyaki table, and things went south faster than a dropped egg. Our server was solid, but the "chef" was a total trainwreck. It felt like we were an inconvenience to his schedule. He just rushed through the motions with zero engagement, like he was checking off a grocery list instead of actually cooking for people. The "Highlights" (and I use that term loosely): The Timing: I ordered the steak and scallops. He finished my steak before the rice even hit the grill. My cow just sat there getting cold while we watched him "work." The Culinary Wisdom: When one of us asked if the beef was a strip or a ribeye, he literally just said, "It's steak." Cool. Glad we cleared that up. The Cross-Contamination Special: We had a vegetarian in the group. He proceeded to cook her tofu directly in the steak juice. Truly a "chef's kiss" moment if you hate your customers. The Doneness (or lack thereof): The salmon was basically still swimming (raw), and the scallops were charred and tasted like fire and brimstone. The Mussels: I grabbed a side of green mussels. They were... fine? I've had much better elsewhere in town, but they were the Olympic gold medalists of my meal by default. The Silver Lining? The Sake. It came in a take-home glass, was incredibly easy to drink, and was 100% necessary to get through the rest of the experience. I can't speak for the sushi, but if it's handled with the same "I don't want to be here" energy as the teppanyaki, I'd stay far, far away. Two stars only because the hostess was nice and the Sake did its job.

We hit the club for brunch with a group, and while the ambiance was pure "Country Club Chic," the execution was a bit more "Sunday Morning Sand Trap." The Liquid Courage I started off my round with two drinks. the Bloody Mary. It was fine--tasty enough, but it certainly didn't change my life or inspire any poetry. However, things got interesting with their Tequila/Cold Brew/Liquor 43 concoction. Topped with an egg foam cap, it was actually pretty solid. A bit of a gamble, but sometimes you have to roll the dice when the menu is trying that hard. The Culinary "Hit and Miss" Then came the food, or as I like to call it: The Great Consistency Crisis. The Steak: I asked for medium-rare; I received medium-well with a "char" that felt more like a personal vendetta against the cow. The Potatoes: Apparently, potato portions are determined by a lottery system. I received about half the amount of the person next to me. Maybe I didn't look hungry enough? The Eggs: My over-easy eggs had crispy, hard edges and arrived at a temperature I'd describe as "lukewarm at best." We also had to hunt down salt and pepper like we were on a scavenger hunt. Honestly, I probably should have just hit the buffet and cut out the middleman. The Service Our server was perfectly nice, but he appeared to be roughly twelve years old. Since he wasn't legally old enough to understand the complexity of a craft cocktail, he couldn't give us any info on the drink menu. We just had to "go with our gut"--which is a dangerous game when tequila and cold brew are involved. The Verdict I'm not saying I won't be back, but consider this a fair warning: if Round 2 involves another charred steak and a side of "room temperature" eggs, I'll be sending it back for a rerun faster than a shanked drive into the woods. 3/5 Stars -- Great for people-watching, questionable for potato-equity.
