AYCE: The AYCE is a good deal if you can eat to go beyond breaking even. That means either 5-6 normal rolls like the California or salmon rolls or 3-4 specialty rolls that are usually deep fried and covered in spicy mayo. We were extremely full after. AYCE is one of those things you do maybe once every two years. Fish quality: 3/5. However, this is expected. We are in a midwestern city so without a doubt you can expect frozen fish and imitation crab. I would say the worst quality showed up as the tuna on top of one of the rolls that had and almost "melt in your mouth" consistency which was pretty unpleasant. What really put the quality at a 3 was that the overall flavor of the fish compared to other places just was on par, nothing that made it stand out. Service and cleanliness: 5/5 our waitress was very friendly, funny, and attentive. Albeit, we came early but was still very impressed at how genuine she was. Bathroom was clean. **DISCLAIMER: I'm a bit of a sushi snob (unfortunately), so my standards can be a bit unreasonable when it comes to ma' fish. FYI before you go all kung-fu on my inbox. :) Unfortunately, Sushi Mido is your standard sushi restaurant. I had high hopes for this to be my go-to, given how great the reviews here on Yelp were, but I knew as soon as I stepped into the door that I would be disappointed. They had a big sign on their main entrance that said "ALL YOU CAN EAT SUSHI" and it wasn't so much as a red flag as it was a near deal-breaker. Partly because, ironically, there's an all you can eat sushi place in Phoenix called Mido Sushi (of no relation) that has probably THE worst sushi on Earth, but also partly because no first-class sushi restaurant ever does an "all you can eat." It just doesn't happen. Take Jiro's Sushi in Japan (best sushi on Earth) as an example. They set the menu, the quantity, what goes in it, what you eat with it, etc. long before you ever get to the restaurant. Their quality of food is far too high to give Black Friday-esque deals such as "all you can eat." Regardless, Sushi Mido does have a bit to offer for the right audience. If convenience is what you need, Mido's got you covered. I had to grab my food quickly and head back to work, so I placed a take-out order here and it took about 20 minutes for them to prepare my food. I walked in around the 18-minute mark and my order was waiting for me on the counter. Easy to call, grab, and go with virtually no delay, so bonus points for that. The sushi itself is where I wish Mido had delivered a bit more on. I ordered a Salmon Roll, a Yellowtail Roll, and a Dragon Roll. It wasn't terrible by any means--but it just lacked the raw freshness that the best sushi places ALWAYS deliver on. And I'm not just talking about the fish- the rice, as well as the vegetables, lacked hard on the freshness factor. Speaking of fish, they skimped quite a bit on the fish per sushi roll/piece. I'm not asking for sashimi-sized pieces in each roll, but there was barely enough fish in each piece, and certainly not enough to taste the full extent of what sushi actually has to offer. Fortunately, the eel on the Dragon Roll tasted pretty good, but it wasn't enough to compensate for the lackluster freshness and fish-skimping all around. Getting take-out, I will give Sushi Mido the benefit of the doubt, but it whether you get your sushi to go or not really shouldn't have much of an impact on the quality of food. I will be back to take them up on the "ALL YOU CAN EAT SUSHI" sign one of these days, but that's about it. read more

I have seen this place and was a little skeptical, but it was outstanding. I am a sushi lover and can say that this place has amazing sushi. The ambiance is so warm and inviting and the music playlist was incredible (the shins, gotye, and some local artists). We went on a weeknight when it wasn't very busy and everything was still incredibly fresh. Beautiful presentation and helpful server. Andrew made recommendations and did everything he could to go out of his way so that we made the best decisions possible. Great wine and food specials. I will definitely be back and will spread the word! The only downside, in my opinion, was that most of the rolls included tempura or deep fried pieces and I prefer all raw. This is my new favorite sushi restaurant in KC. I'm so glad it's less than a mile from my new home!! I've been a few times. The service is EXCELLENT! Yesterday, we had a guy by the name of Chuck. I have complete respect for his service-oriented attitude. He makes recommendations, has a great sense of humor, and he has a very balanced approach to being there when you need him to be there. The food is amazing. I love love LOVE the hot and sour soup. The crab rangoon is so/so. I might ask for salad instead next time and see how that is. But the SUSHI. Wow!! It's great! Contrary to the complaints I've read about their hours of business I did not mind. The ones complaining seemed to be coming at unreasonable times and were being a bit pre-madonna. The parking was small but Sushi Mido is so close to everything there is not a building that can work the way the one they are in has for them over the years. The servers have always been my favorite. They talk to you and make you feel like you've known them for years. They might not be your server but you will definitely hear from them once in your visit. The sushi boys also do so wonderfully of keeping the rolls coming out nicely since they do make them all FRESH to each order. I recommend Sushi Mido to any new sushi lovers or people coming from the coast. They are in Kansas but they pull off sushi very nicely. read more

So my friend, Craig, insisted I try this place out. I love sushi and I don't expect much from a midwest sushi place but I thought I would give it a shot. All you can eat, $15.95 and then half off specialty items. It is their grand opening though so it was 20% off. We arrived a little after Noon on Sunday - they open at Noon. There were some people already seated and ready to go. We sat in B3. Our server was a young man with a pony tail. He got out drink order right away - water. He brought us menus and the sushi sheet to pick what we wanted. We ordered about 7 rolls and Craig got salad and I got Miso Soup. It took a little bit but soon it came out along with a plate of Crab Rangoon - complimentary! Let me say that Craig was here on Friday night and the service was terrible. The waitress was really bad - forgetting items, not bringing drinks, no crab rangoon, etc. So, this service was stellar comparatively speaking. The miso soup was good although there was a ton of seaweed and I left a lot in the bowl. Craig said the salad was good and had lots of dressing - I assume this is a good thing. The waiter brought him a fork for the salad unprompted which he appreciated. Then came the rolls. Delicious rolls - so many rolls. I don't know what all we got but all told I think we had...9 or 10? I had to stop. I couldn't do it. Craig powered through though and took one for the team. Delicious. They were lots of cooked fish - eel, crab, etc. But they were all well done and pretty and delicious. We had water filled as needed. They did lose our order for a bit but I wasn't longing for more rolls so it was ok to have a break. The food was plentiful and the price was right. Please stay in business!! They know their way around sushi and sashimi here. You can tell everything is fresh and expertly prepared. It's a pet peeve of mine with places that serve sloppy sushi rolls. I don't have to worry about that here. The four gentleman behind the bar knew what they were doing and worked together like a well oiled machine. Two of us decided to go for the boat and it was great and filling. Another had one of the noodle soups and she loved it. Their all you can eat sushi offer is a definite good deal. Pace yourself and be mindful of when you're getting full though. You'll be charged per piece if you can't finish what you ordered. The building is rather unassuming, but the inside is nice. That means they don't open until 12:12, which means they'll let you come inside, but you will stand around for 12 minutes before they seat you or anyone else. So you arrive (12:00). You'll be seated (12:12). You get your drinks and place your order (12:15). And you're not upset because things seem to be going okay. But then you wait. And wait. Someone in your party will have ordered an entree from the kitchen, and they'll get theirs, but you won't get your sushi (12:50). You sit and wait for your sushi. And wait. And wait. People who came in after you have their food. And then you get up and ask for the drinks and kitchen entree check and tell them to cancel your sushi order because it's been over an hour since you arrived, and your sushi hasn't come yet (1:05). And then the waiter tries to argue with you and tell you that you can't cancel your order. And then you pay with cash for the kitchen entree because you don't want to give your credit card since you're worried they will do something shady. And then you leave (1:10). read more

Sushi Mido is a diamond in the rough! When approaching Sushi Mido, it looked like a small shack of a restaurant, however, I was pleasantly surprised when I entered the restaurant. The place is bigger than I expected and it was nice and clean inside. I visited during the lunch hour expecting to eat some all you can eat sushi, which I was very intrigued about. Instead, I went with the lunch special because they have a very impressive one. The lunch comes with 2 pieces of crab rangoon, a salad or soup, and a choice of 1 roll, 2 rolls, or 3 rolls. The prices are also decent at $7, $9, and $12 respectively. I figured I most likely wouldn't eat more than 3 rolls if I went with the $20 all you can eat sushi, so the lunch special was definitely the way to go. The crab rangoon was very tasty and brought out right from the fryer. It was crispy, hot, and deliciously filled with cream cheese. The salad was simple but the dressing was also pretty tasty. We ordered the vegetable tempura appetizer and it was also good. It came in a nice presentation. I was very happy with the rolls that I tasted. A few rolls that intrigued me were the sweet potato roll and the bagel roll. Both were surprisingly delicious! The sweet potato roll was crunchy with the sweet/salty taste you'd expect from sweet potato fries. The bagel roll actually had the taste of a breakfast bagel with cream cheese and some sort of fish that was almost like prosciutto. Other rolls I liked were the dynamite rolls and crispy calamari roll. I'm a fan of Sushi Mido and am very glad I came during a lunch hour. Personally, I like Sushi Mido much better than Drunken Fish because of the price, sushi quality, and sushi selections. The only thing that I feel needed some work was the service. It wasn't bad but it also wasn't great. I didn't like that the server was basically standing next to the table waiting for us to take the last tempura from the basket so he can take it away. So Kansas City has a lot in the way of Sushi. In my mind, Sushi Mido is my #1. Now Sushi Mido doesn't have the high end atmosphere that places like Nara, Drunken Fish, or Kyoto have. But what it lacks there it makes up in selection and quality. The menu is absolutely mind blowing. Every time I go in there I swear there are new things to pick from and I am always torn on what to get (because it's all so damn good). Seriously, your head is going to spin at the roll selection alone! But here is the real kicker. For $23.95 you can do All-You-Can-Eat, 7 days a week! Yup, no matter what day it is you can get your 5th deadly sin on! So my recommendation is to get a bunch of your friends and head over to Sushi Mido. Four to Six or even more, all ordering the all-you-can-eat, is going to allow you to ascend into sushi nirvana. Seriously, Sushi Mido is where you want to go when you want Sushi in KC. Went for lunch today. Got 3 rolls for 10 bucks. Came with some egg drop soup and randomly, French fries. Soup was good. For the 3 rolls I got the crunchy salmon roll, sweet potato roll, and the dynamite roll. All 3 were pretty good. The crunchy salmon roll was pretty basic but that is why I got it because I had never had the other 2 before. The sweet potato roll was good and was a nice change of flavor from other rolls I had had. The dynamite roll was really good and had about everything under the sun in it. Also had a piece of the dinosaur roll off my friends plate and it was really good too. While I am not a big fan of crab Rangoon he got some with his meal and said they were good. Overall I was very satisfied with the meal. Good price and I went home very full. This is a place I plan to make a regular on my list of places. While I have had better sushi it was at a restaurant where I spent triple that of today's meal and the gap wasn't that large. I am excited to have found a place that satisfy my hunger for sushi as well as my frugal ways. Forgot to note that the wait staff was very good while we were there. Don't think I ever made it to the bottom of my glass of iced tea and even though I have done the sushi thing before they seemed well informed and would work with those that hadn't. Sad to say this review will not be a nice one. My family and I have eaten here many times and had favorable times every time. Last night, however, that wasn't the case. After the 15 minute wait (which was fine, it was dinner time), we were seated and the waiter took our order and was prompt about getting our drinks to us, and then our soups and appetizers. At that point, he told us that our food should be coming out soon, and I thanked him for his attentiveness. Then....crickets. We waited more than 30 more minutes, with our waiter intermittently telling us that he was checking on our order. Finally, when he realized it had been such a long time, he goes to one of the chefs to ask about our order and he shrugs knowing nothing about it. Then the waiter goes to the computer, PRINTS OFF OUR ORDER, and hands it to the chef. The waiter then came over and lied to us, tell us there was some sort of mix up, one that he couldn't explain, and that there was a rush put on our order. I thank him again, begrudgingly. The food arrived shortly thereafter, and we ate and paid (the waiter offered us no discount for the wait or the screw up) and we went home. Soon after we get home, my wife starts feeling ill. Her stomach is in knots, but neither me nor my son had any troubles. Something in her soup or the role that she ordered that she alone ate was bad, and it gave her food poisoning. Between the delay, the screw up, the lies, the unprofessionalism and the food poisoning, I rate Sushi Mido one star, and I vow that it will take an act of God to invite me back there. read more

Been here twice in about three years hoping the second time would be much better. Nope, same horrible customer service. Whether it be the manager, hostess, or owner. They were very rude. First time I went, three hours from the time we got our appetizers to the sushi served. We only were able to have one sushi roll per person at our table on the all you can eat sushi before all the rice ran out. The server came to our table apologized and asked if we wanted dessert. Then came and gave us our ticket. Charged us full price, no discount even though we only had only one roll before they ran out of rice. Second time we came. It got better... sort of. We were given two sushi rolls per person during again our three hour wait. During that wait, it took our waitress 45+ minutes to get a sliced jalapeno, which we asked for three times in the span of 30 minutes for. She didn't even apologize. Through this whole wait she didn't give us any explanation for the wait our even apologize for it. We ended our night with the manager mouthing off to two people in our party, when they asked him to correct the over charges on our drinks specials. We asked if the wait times of three hours were normal. He shot back at us saying, they are and if we didn't like them we can go elsewhere, and he didn't need us to come back. Guess we should have listen to our instincts and not return from the first experience we had, and the 3 other bad reviews from friends who had similar experiences. We went later expecting the crowd to die down a bit, nope the party was still going on strong! Came in around 8:30. Got seated around 9 which we didn't mind. The 30min wait was not as bad as we thought. They had a good system down to keep things flowing. Did the all you can eat sushi (ALL rolls only, but with half price sashimi) for $21.99, totally a steal!! Not only did it include all rolls but it also comes with your choice of 2 of the following: crab rangoons, edamame, salad, or soups. Say wahhh?! Two? We ordered a total of 10 rolls (6 first then 4 later) and shared it between 3 people, yes we're fat asses and yes we finished it ALL, to avoid a waste of food and $$ they charge $0.50 for any piece left over and it's a negative on to go boxes. But in our defense we wanted to make the $21.99 worth it, and by ordering 2 rolls per person that was $20 in itself...so we had to go all out.. I don't even remember what we ordered but a few of my favorites are Midnight Fantasy Roll and the Lobster Roll packed with major flavor! Their was 1 roll that did sit too well with me and that was because it was ridiculously spicy, the Tornado Roll. Our server did warn us about it but we weren't sure what he meant until we all had a bite. The spicy kick creped up to us and bam! Just like that our water glasses were empty within seconds. The wait time for sushi was no more than 10 minutes. Impressed by that, they really know what they're doing considering the all you can eat sushi is every day. Service was superb! At least our server was. He was attentive, apologized that our appetizers came out a bit later than usual and offered new ones if they were cold (and they weren't by the way). He listed every roll that came out and even brought 1 sushi back to the chefs because he noticed something was missing and had them put it on...talk about great service! Food: The sushi here is amazing! The fish tasted fresh and the flavors of the sushi were different from each other. The only downside is that the sashimi is not part of the AYCE. (You can still get it for half price) But I still love this place! Service: the service here is welcoming and the servers defiantly know their sushi. It's hard to find a sushi place with knowledgeable servers. Environment: the inside is well decorated and clean. The place is a great size and not too small. Overall: this place is good for couples who wants to be adventurous or anyone who enjoy different types of sushi---(So you can eat your heart out). I'm so glad Shawnee got another great sushi restaurant! Although this restaurant focuses on their rolls more than traditional fish-on-rice sushi, it is still the best deal around for FRESH sushi that never disappoints. When they first opened, I went for their "all you can eat" deal, and discovered very quickly that my eyes were bigger than my stomach. It's not a buffet - you order off a menu, the sushi chefs make them in full view as you wait, and each roll has 6-8 pieces. In my eagerness to try several different rolls, I ended up with a lot of wasted food. On subsequent visits, I have taken advantage of their very reasonable lunch specials, available Tue-Sat (they are closed Mondays). You can get 2 rolls, which is truly plenty, for under $8, and 3 rolls for under $10. These specials come with crab rangoon (their version is my favorite in the Shawnee area) as well as soup or salad. I get the miso soup and it is yummy. My friend swears by the salad. I have ordered the fish-on-rice type sushi a couple times, but it ends up being a bit pricey for lunch. In the world of sushi, it is not overpriced... I'm just cheap. I will continue to go here for a great deal on sushi rolls (and pretty good service).. and to "that other Shawnee sushi place" for the never-ending train of fish-on-rice. :) Oh, one last thing - they do offer traditional Asian-American lunches and dinners (general tso's chicken, teriyaki chicken, etc), although I have never ordered them. I'm Asian and I'm very pickey about sushi places in the mid-west. My friends and I found this place on Nieman Road and the only reason we decided to try it was for the all you can eat. Advice to you, if you want to do the all you can eat, go with a group of four or more people so that you can get your bang for the buck and order different rolls. I don't recommend the all you can eat with only two people, it will be cheaper to just order off the menu, unless your are one of those that can eat four rolls at a time. The service was as expected, not super great, but good enough for a place like this. I don't understand the other reviews that expect this 5 star service from a all you can eat place, get over yourselfs. Your being served by people that make about 3 dollars and hour and get about an average of 5 dollars a tip from their table section in which averages about 45 mins taking the space. Overall, the service was well enough from us humble people that has worked in this type of business. The look of the place is nice, I really don't care much about the looks when it comes to the food. The food: They serve the regular type of pre order of soup, in which soup is soup. The main course or the sushi. Hands down, the best in Kansas City. I eat at other places that are expensive and the only thing that makes the food taste better is the surroundings, but at Sushi Mido, the food is what makes the place. For the price you pay, you can't beat it. My friends and I always come here and we have brought many people here to just see the surprise on their face as they eat the food. Incredibly friendly staff and fresh sushi, it's a pretty awesome place. From the outside you don't expect much, it's on an unassuming strip of Nieman Road in northern Jo Co but once inside, you'll get it. For around $22 it's all you can eat (or you can order individual rolls and other Japanese entrees). Be careful as you order, you'll be charged for leftovers as a way to minimize waste. The all you can eat also includes an appetizer (crab rangoon or steamed edamame) and soup (choose from egg drop, miso, and hot and sour). Everything I had was fresh, well seasoned and delivered in a timely manner. The only issue our table of 5 had was getting water refills from our busy server (eating all of that soy sauce makes you thirsty!) but we eventually just asked for a pitcher and that solved the problem. Pretty Americanized, even by Americanized standards. We always end up with the same server, who is fine. But he like, SERIOUSLY pushes us to order the all-you-can-eat sushi (that's 'AYCE' for you acronym aficionados). The first time I went, I determined the AYCE to not be worth the $23.95 price. The reason being that I typically eat two rolls, and even if the rolls are $12.00 each (which they aren't), you're only breaking even. AND it gets you half price on sashimi orders, but Sushi Mido has the worst sashimi I've had in Kansas City. Er, Shawnee. The Kansas City area, I mean. The tuna is extremely tough and chewy, and not smooth at all. The AYCE feels like a gimmicky sales tactic, complete with the pushy salesman. Like, he judged me for not doing the AYCE, because I mean, heaven forbid. Also, a visit here always seems to take a long time because they're constantly making rolls for you with the AYCE. Like one time there were three of us, and between the three of us ordering different rolls at different times, we'd have long lulls where we're just waiting on another roll to be made. I have entirely too much social anxiety to be carrying conversations like that during dinner. The actual sushi itself is average, thus the average rating. I went for the all you can eat. I think it's like $25 per person. With that you get two sides. Our waiter alone was worth 5 stars. He was attentive, helpful, and just nice all around. I ate a total of 6 rolls and they were all delicious. I will be here at least once a month. FYI- sushi you don't finish is like a 50cent charge per piece. So eat up or hide it well! read more

In short, I was pretty impressed with Sushi Mido. I recently moved to the outskirts of KC from Southern California. one of the first things i did was begin looking for a go-to sushi place with decent sushi. After reading several reviews I came across Sushi Mido and decided to give them a try! We got there shortly before the dinner rush, and were ready to dig into some sushi. Although service was a little slow to begin with, as the dinner crowd began to swarm the restaurant, service perked up. Between the two of us, we shared 10 rolls :) and each were delicious! We wanted to enjoy at least 7 to "break even"/ make the all-you-can-eat price worth it. THis wasn't too difficult as my bf and i love sushi! The rolls we enjoyed were: Spicy Crunch Tunna Roll Spicy Crunch Salmon Roll x 2 Rainbow Roll Spicy Girl Roll Ahi tuna crunch roll Salmon katsu roll Snow white Sunrise roll As you can tell we really like the spicy rolls! THese rolls were pretty good , the only down-side was that their tempura crunch was (although quite the art as it was colored red) a bit stale. With the all-you can eat, you also get a choice of crab rangoon or edamame and ginger dressing salad or soup (hot & sour egg drop or miso). I chose edamame and the miso soup. My bf chose the ginger dressing salad and miso soup. We both enjoyed the miso soup, and their ginger dressing was really good (I stole his cucumbers). I was also glad to find that they make good edamame, i hate going to sushi and getting cold or salt-less edamame. Their edamame is served warm and topped with sea salt! All-in-all I will probably be back sometime soon :) Oh, also keep in mind their parking lot is tight-fitting. Oh Sushi Mido. The interior is a little strange, they do always seem to be playing 00s throwbacks...think Something Corporate... My favorite thing about this place is they offer their lunch special on Saturdays. It's a very good deal - 2 rolls with salad/soup and a crab Rangoon for 10 bucks. Same thing but 3 rolls for 13. The sushi is good - nothing mind blowing nor very authentic but good to fix your cravings. Service has always been very consistent and many of the servers have been there for years. The only all you can eat sushi place in town. For about $18, you can eat as much rolls as you would like. Try the wonder woman, or volcano. Try to get there early during dinner if you would like to receive your food in a reasonable amount of time. First of all the service is outstanding! I've had a few different servers, but Emily is just great. She is very helpful and explains what each roll is. (actually all the servers do) But she is just really patient with newbie sushi explorers. I've eaten there in a group, alone, and with just one other person. Each time I've ordered the all you can eat sushi and it is made fresh to order. I like that when eating in a large group, you can choose to have it served family style. Whereas each person pays the AYCE price and everyone orders a roll so that the whole table can share. This gives a chance to really taste all different kinds of rolls. Their selection is huge! So many wonderful sushi rolls to choose from. All-you-can-eat Sushi? Hell Yeah! Food: Great Sushi is made fresh as it is ordered, I sat at the bar and watched them putting rolls together non-stop. Service: Amazing Sitting at the bar I had the opportunity to watch the wait staff pick up orders. Not only are the employees behind the bar knowledgeable about their craft but the wait staff know their sushi as well. With a quick glance I witnessed corrections from the wait staff on the plating of dishes. I received regular updates on my orders readiness, 8 rolls just for me. ZERO STARS! DO NOT RECOMMEND! Unfortunately this place is now somewhere we will never go to again. We have gone here for YEARS but the past few times we've gone to get takeout (thanks quarantine :| ) the customer service has been absolutely horrendous. The first few times we went and received poor service we chalked it up to maybe a bad day or something like that. Not this last time though. When my husband showed up to pick up our food the manager (asian lady) literally said to him, "OH you are the one that always orders extra sauce! WHY do you need extra?" WHAT?! Who does that?! Then when my husband said that's it we are not coming back because quite frankly he's tired of the rude interaction. Yes, the sushi is good and it's been an absolute favorite of ours for years - we will not be disrespected. She "tried" apologizing, but too little too late. You can't treat people like that. Charge us for the extra sauce if it is that big of deal - we will pay it! I always check the online ordering system for a way to add it on there as a charged line item and there isn't one so we just ask when we get there.
