Onigiri. Rice balls with meat (or other filling) in them. That is what started this adventure! This starts with being introduced to Onigiri at NAKACON, which I had never taken part in previously. Oh wow... that is a time. Maybe I'll review it if/when I attend this year. One snack that they have at the event is Onigiri. And they are neat little quick foods. That caused a search for them not at the event. And there are a few places. But, they are the same wrapped-up little seaweed and rice bombs that are sold at the Con. But, surprise! Aoyama has them, and they are amazing! This little Ramen shop is often overlooked as it is right between a Savers and a Johnny's Tavern. But it is worth the trip. A great little lunch spot with fantastic staff and a clean and simple atmosphere. I have been here before and had their Ramen, which is also delicious and quick. So go try this place. There is plenty to love here. I'll be at the bar down the side, chowing down on Onigiri and maybe some Ramen.

This is a follow up to my original review. I was unsure whether to go with two stars or three, but the Yelp app has three as "Not sure? Tell us the good and the bad", so I went with that one. FPO and I have been coming to this Aoyama location since they opened. It's more convenient than their original Olathe location. We went again last night, and going forward we'll make the trek to the original. Maybe not as often, but still on occasion. Aoyama Shawnee started out great, but I think that may have been because they had managers from the original location working at the new one. Over the past few visits we noticed the food quality wasn't as good and the service has definitely declined. I had my usual Classic Tonkatsu, which was okay. The flavor was still good, the meat was tough. FPO tried their new Szechuan Beef which I'm told has a smokey heat to it and flavor-wise was pretty good. Downside is, the meat was tough in this one too. And, because we'd never tried it before, we asked the waitress how it was. She said, not spicy at all. It had heat. For us that's not a problem. We're both used to Asian spicy. If it had been someone else though, they probably would've been unpleasantly surprised. I'd also suggest something other than CNN news on the televisions. Yes, it's important to be aware of current events, but it's not what I'd choose to watch when I go out to a restaurant. Stick with the sports stations, like the original Aoyama. I also wasn't thrilled with the way our waitress didn't check back, or how she just dropped off our check without asking if we'd like anything else or if we we had a phone number listed for their Aoyama rewards program, or just continued to walk away while FPO tried to talk to her. This last part may be just because I'm so used to restaurant experiences in Hawaii (both working and dining), and in Hawaii the Department of Health requires restaurant works who come in contact with food to wear a shirt with sleeves. It must not be the same in Kansas, but food servers in razor back tank tops still make me cringe.

Chicken wonton ramen with a spice bomb, gyoza

We always love our food from Aoyama, whether it's to go or dine in. The chicken wonton ramen add egg plus a spice bomb is my favorite ramen anywhere! The gyoza are light and crisp, plus my husband loves the tonk

We eat at this location often; service is always pleasant and quick. We have eaten in and opted for take out. The food is delicious!

This ramen spot is always at the top of my kids' must-visit list when they are in town--and for good reason. The customer service is exceptional. The GM makes every visit feel personal, whether it is remembering what we ordered last time, noticing it has been a while, or encouraging us to try something new. That kind of care makes a big difference. Bonus: I think I just found my new favorite bowl!

I would go back just for the Gyoza. The charring was surprisingly sweet and they were gone soon after being placed down on the table. The staff was friendly and quick. The location isn't very big but they have tables and bar seating. The fried chicken felt off and I had some unusually hard pieces. The rice was honestly very good for plain white rice! The ramen included an egg and had good flavor for the price listed.

The good was delicious, staff was very friendly and helpful in deciding the best option based in my likes. They have a bar area and a table area. Very spacious. Prices are very good for the amount of food you get. Would definitely be back if I am ever in the area again:

I tried Aoyama ramen for the time this past weekend and I was blown away by the taste and quality of the food! I am a ramen lover and also a vegetarian and I was very pleasantly surprised by the vegetarian options available. I was weary about the idea of cauliflower in ramen so I got the spicy creamy vegan ramen without cauliflower and added an egg. I appreciate how easy it was to customize my order. For being vegan it was such a flavorful broth and the noodles were perfect! I also got the tofu onigiri which came with two generously sized onigiri stuffed with a tasty marinated tofu. I would absolutely recommend this place to anyone looking for a nice, hot bowl of tasty ramen!! I will absolutely be returning next time I'm in the area.

Found this gem in Shawnee with a friend. The tom yum soup and tempura were delicious. The tempura was served perfectly, hot and fresh. The soup came a bit too quick, probably about 5-10 following the appetizers. Also, we were about ten minutes into our soup when the bill came. It was very bizarre. Overall the food was good, but there are some service pieces that could be fixed.

Aoyama Ramen is your next top ramen spot to check out in Greater Kansas City. There is currently an Aoyama Ramen restaurant in Olathe and one in Shawnee. We started our meal with the house dumplings, edamame, a house salad with ginger dressing, and the insanely delicious crab rice roll (not sushi rolls, but almost like a mini sushi sandwich). We also tried the Hot Sake...great presentation with a heated container for the sake to stay warm throughout your meal. We also ordered the classic Spicy Chicken Ramen along with the special Aoyama Spicy Beef Ramen. Both were absolutely delicious! You can't end your meal without ordering the mochi ice-cream (few flavors available) as well as the machi cheesecake. This spot is great to go with friends or on a date night. Check out Aoyama Ramen asap!

Loved the vibes here--very anime-themed with an awesome Godzilla eating ramen mural when you walk in. We came about 30 minutes before closing, and the service was quick. Had edamame to start and sho-yu ramen for both of us. Everything was tasty and hit the spot, especially on a rainy day. Great food, cool atmosphere--I'll definitely be back when I visit KC again.

I'm always down to try a new ramen spot and was excited to learn that this opened up nearby. I placed an order online without any issues. The interior isn't huge. It's a pretty small spot but there are some seats. I loved the giant Godzilla mural. It's super cute. They also have a cooler in the front with various soft drinks but also sake! I had to get some sake to go and it was easily added onto my order. I decided to try the Bang Bang Shrimp: crispy tempura fried shrimp tossed in a sweet chili sauce. They were pretty large and were good. I also got an order of gyoza: crispy pan fried dumplings stuffed with pork and cabbage. I would definitely order them again and recommend them! They were my favorite of the two. I tried the Tonkotsu Classic Ramen: thick, rich, creamy 15 hour pork broth topped with chashu, seasoned egg, bean sprout, scallion, and nori. The soup was delicious and the to go packaging was excellent at keeping everything fresh. The portion sizes are average on the Ramen. But it's not super tiny, it's just right. I will definitely be back for more Ramen, and would recommend this business to anyone looking for some comfort food.

Then we sat down at the teppanyaki table, and things went south faster than a dropped egg. Our server was solid, but the "chef" was a total trainwreck. It felt like we were an inconvenience to his schedule. He just rushed through the motions with zero engagement, like he was checking off a grocery list instead of actually cooking for people. The "Highlights" (and I use that term loosely): The Timing: I ordered the steak and scallops. He finished my steak before the rice even hit the grill. My cow just sat there getting cold while we watched him "work." The Culinary Wisdom: When one of us asked if the beef was a strip or a ribeye, he literally just said, "It's steak." Cool. Glad we cleared that up. The Cross-Contamination Special: We had a vegetarian in the group. He proceeded to cook her tofu directly in the steak juice. Truly a "chef's kiss" moment if you hate your customers. The Doneness (or lack thereof): The salmon was basically still swimming (raw), and the scallops were charred and tasted like fire and brimstone. The Mussels: I grabbed a side of green mussels. They were... fine? I've had much better elsewhere in town, but they were the Olympic gold medalists of my meal by default. The Silver Lining? The Sake. It came in a take-home glass, was incredibly easy to drink, and was 100% necessary to get through the rest of the experience. I can't speak for the sushi, but if it's handled with the same "I don't want to be here" energy as the teppanyaki, I'd stay far, far away. Two stars only because the hostess was nice and the Sake did its job.

HUNDREDS of referrals to BD's, most signing up for the Rewards Program. Note: this is not a local restaurant issue but a corporate one. Local management has even criticized the same issue and noted the large number of complaints from other Rewards members. I've been a Reward Member since 2015 and a loyal customer even before that. I've moved in and out of the area but when living close we would visit 2-3 times a month. Even when living where there was no BD's, we made a point of going to BD's when back in town visiting friends and family. So often that I had acquired 1210 points. This doesn't even include the hundreds and hundreds of points that was generated on other accounts, which I treated others while using their accounts, like my daughter. To my SHOCK and AMAZEMENT, to repay my loyalty of over 10 years, BD's in October of 2025 decided to, with absolutely no notice, wipe every single point from my account. Local management says their hands are tied and can do nothing but give contact info and tell me about all the other customers that have also complained. The contact info is useless, after a dozen attempts, not a single reply. Some would consider this THEFT. 1200 points could get you 8 free bowls, at $18.99 per bowl that would be $151.92. Much more if you used points in different ways. It just amazes me that any business would treat their loyal customer (or any customer) in such a manner. I do wonder if this is just a bad employee in guest relations or if this is a corporate decision that the customers lost saves more money that honoring their statement from their website "Our guests are our number one priority here at BD's" If you prefer to spend your money with a business that values your patronage and you as a customer..... this is not it.
