I liked this place. The sushi was different than a typical place. The roll I had was called titanic, I believe. It had kiwi and cereal. Sounded weird... felt like I had to have it! It was actually delicious. The downside to this place... there's honestly not a lot of options. They have about a page of sushi, typical soup and salad... but that's about it. I went today at 1230 for lunch, upon walking in there were two tables sat. I have given this place more than one opportunity to disappoint and this was the last time. the place closes at 130 but they didn't have time to make a to go order or sit me down as one person. So I walked out. The server who is the owner is short with people and rude. The prices for sushi are to high for what you get. They never keep good hours. The door hours never matches what they actually serve. she tends to stand at the register and watch people while they eat until your dimensional eating your last bite and the bento box comes with fruit more like four grapes. The food is good and the couple that owns it are very friendly. This place is definitely on the expensive side. Another thing about this restaurant is that they have weird hours and never seem to be open when we want to go. Got the bento box lunch for $9.95. Miso soup, salad, 8 California rolls, and 4 "chefs choice" fish things. All different. It was very fresh. Very good. The only one I couldn't eat was shrimp. It looked beautiful, but tails gross me out. I almost went 4 stars because the "fruit" that was included with the lunch consisted of 3 canned pineapple chunks. Then I remembered where I was. This is a small, casual lunch type place. Reminds me of a Subway, but Japanese! Everything else was great! read more

Never been here, only reason why I came was because it was highly rated on yelp and my town pretty much only has fast food as an option. Once walking in to the empty establishment 7pm on a Saturday night, the oriental woman immediately says "we sell sushi here". That was the warm welcoming I received to a place that would want me to spend money there. Upon that we sit down while we were brought menus and a form to fill out, had no clue on what to do. What really turned me off was when she goes behind the roll counter and procedure to point and mock with occasional points towards our direction. Decided that we shall leave instead of becoming an unpleasant person. I've been to numerous top of the line sushi/eatery establishments but never just got tossed to a chair and left to rot. I was a little put off by the front of the restaurant, not because it was dirty or not neat, but rather because it looked a bit like a fast-food sushi place, not a restaurant. Don't let appearances fool you. This restaurant is run by two people, I believe a husband and wife team. The husband is the one who is the sushi chef, and the female/wife is the waitress. The place has about 10 tables and a sushi bar that seats about 14. The lunch specials are good and you can get a sushi deluxe bento box for about $16. It includes salad, and three types of sushi rolls. The salmon skin hand roll is pretty tasty too. The fried dumplings/gyoza are tasty but petite in size. If you can eat a lot, you can easily spend about $100 in here for two people, but sushi is usually more on the expensive side. The sushi here is fresh and tasty, and well worth the price. The place has a few choices for beers including Sapporo. This restaurant is pretty authentic as well, the only thing it doesn't have that most other sushi places do is natto. It does have uni, which I have not tried at this location, but everything else that I have tried-- either nigiri or maki handroll style was fresh and tasty. It is by far the best in Lebanon. (And others may compare it to Sake. My opinion is that Sake is great for stir-fry and teriyaki, but Sushi Max is way better for sushi.) read more

I should have known there was a problem when I didnt see any yelp reviews at all on this place. All the reviews on yahoo were 5 star and glowing. I recently moved to Lebanon Tn from San Francisco CA. I will admit that I was spoiled with the quality of sushi I received there. For this reason I have hesitated trying any local places. I went to Sushi Max based on the reviews I read on other sites. I now believe those reviews must have been written by the owners themselves, because NO ONE who has eaten there could have. It was literally the WORST sushi I have ever eaten. The sashimi was room temperature, slimey, and had a sour taste. I had to fight the urge to spit it out at the table ( which I now wish I had since I have been violently ill) we thought that perhaps the rolls were what everyone must have been raving about, but out of the 4 diff ones we ordered only one was palatable, the spicey shrimp tempura, which we then saw had not been de-veined :((((((( Im not trying to be a sushi snob, and I never usually go out of my way to write reviews just because I personally didnt care for something. Atmosphere is a little weird because its a sushi place in a strip mall so it is a cheap drop ceiling and there is stupid cheap crap on the walls and I got a Sprite in a can, but if you don't care about that stuff you are good!! I would love to rate this place with a much higher rating, as all the other reviewers did, but I can't formulate an opinion on quality when it is closed at 7:00pm on a Monday. I read the reviews, and the wife and I decided to pack up the kids and go. The website said they were open. However, they were closed. So, if I ever catch them open, I will post another review. UPDATE: So I was able to catch the place open. I am truly glad that I did! The fact that this place is in a small strip mall is a bit of a put off, and the dining area is small with little decoration or ambiance. However, they make up for it very well with quality, flavor, service, and personality. This was right up there with the best sushi I have ever tried. I am truly impressed. This was one of the worst places I have ever been. I stopped in on the way home to grab a few rolls and when I asked for a menu other than the piece of paper that had the name of the rolls on it the lady told me I had to sit down at a table to read the menu, she also made this process extremely awkward... After looking at it for several minutes I told her I was ready to order. She then said to me we don't have time to make a to go order right now... There was 2 other tables eating in the entire restaurant... That was the first and last time I will step foot in there. read more

Sushi Max is good sushi. It's not the best sushi I've ever had in my life, but it's always been very good. I enjoy the salad and the dressing that comes with it. The dressing is unique and I like that. The sushi is good quality. The green tea ice cream for dessert is to die for! I've always been greeted when coming in, had wonderful service, and yelled a friendly "bye! Thank you!" from Max (I assume). I don't understand the bad reviews really, unless you are expecting a lot of over-the-top, deep-fried southern rolls. The only thing I might suggest to the owner is updating the decor. I have been here at least 10 times and will continue to keep coming back. There is one other sushi place in Lebanon, and while the non-sushi items on the menu may be wonderful (I wouldn't know, because I won't be back), the sushi is pathetic.
