Checked out one of the Eateries in Freeport. Sushi Ko is on a strip full of restaurants. Its a small dim lit but very personable place . We were Seated right away because it wasn't crowded on this night and We started with Miso Soup and the Seaweed Salad which was pretty good then we asked for the Boneless Crispy Duck appetizer which was very flavorful and succulent. By Now we were ready for Dinner so we ordered the Sushi and Sashimi Dinner for two which included Octopus, Tuna, Salmon, Shrimp and a few more types. The most noticeable thing about the entree was that it was so fresh that it practically melted in my mouth. The Presentation was pretty nice too. We also sampled the Black Rice which tasted so healthier than the regular white rice that comes with rolls. Overall, The Experience was quite nice and the service was very efficient and they were very very alert and pleasant. I will definitely return and probably sit at the Sushi Bar next and chat up the Sushi Chefs and try out some of their famous Toro. read more

A frequent sushi diner (at least 2/week), I find myself coming back to this hidden gem quite often. They offer a variety of different rolls, not only in the "special roll" section, but also in the "cooked" and "carb-free(no rice)" portion of the menu. Each time I come here, I find myself eager to try a new roll, and have yet to be disappointed. A few of my favorite rolls include Fancy Spicy Salmon Roll, Fire Roll, and the Phoenix Roll... and as I just pulled up the menu to jog my memory on these names, I am planning to go back to try the Banana roll - that looks great! Oh and don't forget the garden salad - for the ginger dressing alone! and you might want to ask for a fork and knife for it considering the lettuce pieces run as big as my face. We don't normally come out to Long Island for sushi but we decided to come out to Sushi Ko for our anniversary dinner and the positive Yelp reviews helped make the decision to come here easy. We came on a Saturday night and it was an appropriate setting for a rare date night. I didn't notice any young children but a family with teens did show towards the end of our dinner. I think our next visit, which will most likely include my 2 year old, will be during the day. As for our dinner the Crispy Roasted Duck is a must have! The crispiness and the hoisin sauce is what makes it. We're definitely ordering that again. The seaweed salad was typical. We decided on three rolls for dinner, one raw and two sashimi. The Tiger Roll (raw) and the Flaming Volcano Roll (sashimi) were both delicious. We both disagreed with the taste of the Nouvelle King Crab Roll. My wife didn't care for it but I found it fine but not something I would order again, besides there are more rolls to choose from on the menu. We found the staff to be very friendly and swift. The chef/owner's wife came out and spoke to us and we found her very nice and friendly. I have to admit we haven't had the chef or owner come out to gage our experience in a while. This was quite pleasant. Overall, I would definitely come back here. Good food, pleasant surroundings, and a friendly staff is all I need. read more

I thought the food was very fresh, and the rolls we tried tasted pretty good. I might have expected a little more in the presentation of the food, but it was sufficient for a small establishment. The waitress was prompt in everything from seating us to taking our order to bringing the check, and filling our waters. Seaweed salad was nice, Flaming Volcano Roll was best, and the Philadelphia Roll seemed to me to be fresher than Philly rolls that I have had in other establishments. I have been to Sushi Ko several times now. My first experience was awful because of the service. As nice as the upstairs dining area is... do not sit there. Chances are, you will get their bad waitress. She took our cloth napkins away and gave us paper napkins, she didn't bring out water, and she kept forgetting to bring us items that we ordered. Another reason why I can't give Sushi Ko all 5 stars is their miso soup. I wish it had seaweed in it. Personal preference. However, the other food that I ordered was really great and my boyfriend loved his sashimi. He convinced me to give Sushi Ko another try and now we go there whenever we are in the area. The second time we went there, the owner came over to speak with us and personally wanted to make sure that we were enjoying our dining experience. Our waitress this time was 100% better. I was very impressed. I also really love the decor, atmosphere, and music. Finally, the black rice is to die for. The texture and taste is out of this world. When you combine Sushi Ko's black rice with their fresh ingredients, you get one amazing meal! read more

What a great place! I got take out here a long time ago, and it was really good, but I never got a chance to sit down until last night. My friend at I got out of work at 9:15 and rushed over. They clearly wanted to clean up but the staff was very friendly and helpful, getting our drinks right away and our food just as quickly. We got the Tiger Roll (fantastic), the one with White Tuna and jalapenos (first time I actually got it with jalapenos; HO was it spicy, so I poked out the jalapenos for the rest of the roll which was good) one with seared pepper tuna on top, and one with salmon and tuna on top (Sorry I don't remember the names!). It was ALL delicious and well prepared. What made this the best experience, though, happened later on. We were exhausted from work and FINALLY relaxing and we started talking with the servers and the owner (I think he was the owner) and they are really fun, wonderful people. I even got a birthday dessert!!!! It was delicious! All in all, the food was great, the service was great, I had a great experience, and would thoroughly recommend coming to Sushi Ko. Sushi Ko has delicious sushi and chicken teriyaki. The chicken teriyaki was paired with artichoke which made for a unique flavoring and taste combination. The black rice served on the side for $2.00 extra was to die for and was very well cooked. Beyond the food the atmosphere was nice with comfy chairs and nice spot lighting. The only minor downgrade was I heard a noise of crashing utensils and didn't see the server pick them up to be washed. I noticed, as I was leaving, that the same cabinet I heard the noise had metal to floor sound had the utensils neatly placed. Overall a good experience. Got here on a Saturday around 7:30PM and was seated right away. Noticed we could sit in Japanese traditional booths so we asked to be moved to one, which was no problem. After sitting we looked at the drink menu and decided to order the plum sake with some green tea. Fast, efficient service with the drinks and a wine chiller was brought out for the sake, the way it should be. Looking at the menu we kept debating what to order and decided to go with the tuna pizza. We were deciding between rolls. What stands out about this place is they have a black rice roll, so we went with that to change it up a bit (it had tuna, salmon, avocado etc..). And then we ordered 2 pieces of unagi and 2 pieces of anago (two different types of eel) and 2 pieces of smoked salmon. The sushi pizza was good, not the best I ever had. I think if it had a little more spice to it I would have enjoyed it more. The roll was good, not the greatest either. The smoked salmon sashimi and eel sashimi were delicious. My favorite part about them, the sashimi was not put on top of rice but rather cucumber sticks, a very nice unique touch. Overall the sushi was good, but not the best and not better than other places. I probably wouldn't come back here just because there are other places that I find excellent. read more

For the South Shore sushi wasteland, this place is FIVE STARS. James the owner always strives to elevate his cuisine from generic neighborhood Japanese fare to eclectic Asian and Asian fusion cuisine. On the sushi front, the fish is fresh and tasty, often enhanced with special marinades and special order black rice (which is delicious). James' wife Jasmine is an amazing "front of the house" professional who is attentive, warm and responsive to every diner and seems to anticipate every need. The staff is friendly and efficient and the smiles and greetings from the grateful owners are a real plus. Probably the quickest dinner I've ever had. We both got sushi so it came out pretty fast. I think it only took us a total of 20 minutes. We left wondering if we even ate. I don't know if this is a good thing or a bad thing. They give you warm moist-towelettes upon sitting which was awesome. Service was okay. We started off with Pork Gyoza and they were pretty good. Our sushi was okay. There was signs all over the place saying they now offer black rice. The sushi bar was full of people and it was very loud. That only thing that stood out was the towelettes. We have been going to Sushi Ko since they have opened and the only thing surprising, although not is that it just seems to be better every time we dine there.... The food is exceptional with the freshest and finest Sushi around. You will not find finer hosts James and Jasmine who are as genuine and caring as can be about your being a guest in there establishment and your experience.. James redefines being an expert in his profession and cuisine as specials and dishes are constantly changing... It can get a little bit noisy when they are busy, but understandably so being that I truly believe that everyone is enjoying themselves and this restaurant truly brings out a superb dining experience for everyone!! Never have I ever had such an awesome sushi dining experience. Sat at the bar and ordered a glass of Sauvignon Blanc. I'd just like to note now that the waiter had telepathy because he knew exactly when to come over from the opposite side of the restaurant and clear plates/ask if we needed anything else. My friend and I got the sushi & sashimi lunch special. All the fish was so fresh. Room temp or just a bit colder. Normally I stay away from white tuna but this scenario was different. I tried it despite my inner prejudice and it melted in my mouth and washed away all my problems. I was feeling particularly peckish so my friend and I ordered an Ichiban roll. Awesome texture and just filling enough to hit the spot. My 5 star review was due to the end of the experience. I was trying to figure out what each fish was in the refrigerated display case at the sushi bar when one of the waitresses came over and went through all of them with me... 3 times. It was a conversation that probably would have annoyed most employees but everyone there was happy to have us and wanted to make sure we enjoyed each and every moment. Ate here for the first time tonight. It was quiet..a little too quiet..but relaxing at the same time. A casual place that's local, and happens to be quite good. We started out with the avocado salad. It's a mixed green salad with thinly sliced avocado and the most amazing ginger dressing. Portion is nice as well but probably too small to share for two adults. I tried two rolls...the California roll and the shrimp tempura roll. I ordered them both wrapped with brown rice, which I love when sushi restaurants offer brown rice as an alternative, so that was a plus off the bat. The shrimp tempura roll was awesome. Comes warm and their spicy mayo (you have to ask for this on the side) is great as well. However. On their menu they don't mention putting eel sauce on the roll, and I had to send it back. Our waitress said that most shrimp tempura rolls come with it at other places and so that's why they didn't mention it on their menu (hence the minus of one star). I think legally you have to put the ingredients on the menu for allergy purposes, but whatever. Their prices are the norm for rolls and salads, Etc. Salad with avocado was 6 dollars. Without avocado is 4.50 I believe. The California roll was about 4.50. I didn't check to see if they charged extra for the brown rice. The shrimp tempura roll was 6.00 or 6.50. Also reasonable. Came with a total of 6 pieces. read more
