Decided to give the full 18 courses Omakasa experience a try. Very glad I did. It is a much different experience than eating sushi with the traditional soy sauce, ginger and wasabi condiments. The chef will prepare something that compliments the flavor of the fish that the traditional condiments can't match. Wish I had recorded everything James had explained about each course. Sushi Ko opened their new location and I think maybe the focus on the new chic aesthetic caused the food to get overlooked. There's plenty of sushi places in the area but of course I wanted to try the new spot especially when it's giving an upscale vibe. The sashimi is very thin compared to most I've had which felt stingy. The chicken lettuce wraps were mostly veggies and came with oil and vinegar rather than hoisin. Even the carrot ginger dressing that came with the salad was kind of off. The black rice is good and the green dragon yellowtail roll was just mid, but that was about it. Wow. We have been waiting for Sushi Ko to reopen for months. It was the best sushi around. It was worth the wait! The new place, while smaller is absolutely gorgeous. Clean lines and the perfect lighting. Felt like in a Michelin star restaurant in Manhattan and not on Merrick Ave in Merrick. The food is just as good if not better than we remembered. Started with their take on roast pork buns. Light, fluffy buns with perfectly cooked pork and hoisin. Awesome. We had the pork gyoza which were crispy and packed with flavorful pork. The seaweed salad was delicious with the right amount of spice. For dinner, my daughter was thrilled. She ordered the Maki combo which is all the rolls she usually gets. She loved it. My wife had the miso ramen. She loved it. Super flavorful broth, chewy noodles and tons of vegetables (she asked for no meat). My son had a few rolls and some tamago which he loved and I had the sushi/sashimi combo. It was fantastic. Probably the best octopus I have had in a sushi restaurant. It was super tender, not chewy at all and great flavor. It was so nice seeing the restaurant so busy. The owners are wonderful people with children in the local school district. The new location is beautiful, small with a modern feel. The owners are very nice people, and service was very good considering when they opened. Started with the Toro Tarta app, just delicious! Then on to main course of Sashimi and Toro Teka rolls. One person had the Ramen and she was amazed, said it was the best she ever had. We then ordered more! Great food, very clean, warm and friendly staff and owner. I went there for the first time today with my niece for her birthday. She has just started to develop a taste for sushi. She also really likes Ramen. We had gyozo pork dumplings, kani salad, 3 delicious sushi rolls, and the Ramen with the pork belly. Everything was great. Fresh and well seasoned. I enjoyed the meal so much that I had to order another bowl of the Ramen to go. During the meal the owner introduced herself to us. She was very kind, warm and friendly. Food arrived warm, but I wasn't blown away. Food was just good. I don't think I'd order delivery from them again (through DD), but based on some of the reviews I may have to visit in person. Just finished a meal at our local go-to sushi place. All of the sushi is consistently fresh and nicely presented. I usually get Tuna, Salmon, Yellowtail Scallion sushi/rolls and Peanut Avocado rolls. Hubby loves the Seared Pepper Tuna and Spicy Salmon rolls. Tonight I leisurely enjoyed my meal with a glass of Sauvignon Blanc. Service is impeccable - always! The owners and staff provide an enthusiastic greeting every time we enter the restaurant and throughout the meal. Note, lunch specials here are especially a great deal. We often order to-go and are never disappointed, whether eating in or taking out. It is also a favorite of many in the area. Will definitely be back soon! read more

Bite size review: Sushi Ko has been the most consistent, fresh and all around best sushi spot in the area for years. Other places have come and gone, but Ko has remained. Restaurant is a shoe box, but cozy and clean. Staff ranges from friendly to aloof, but service is always fine. Sushi pizza, yellow tail and all Naruto rolls are my favorites. Last time I was there, king salmon was offered as a special. Woo, so good, it certainly did taste like it was meant for royalty. Take out takes a while but everything is packed with care. Sushi was excellent. It was very fresh, and our server was excellent. We went during the lunch hour and had the three roll lunch special. I also ordered a specialty roll. Restaurant is a bit snug in terms of spacing, and there was only one other couple in the restaurant at the time, however they were preparing a ton of to go orders, and many people were coming in for pick up. This review is for takeout. Ordered few rolls plus a noodle - I would rate 4 stars but minus 1 due to long waiting and services. Was told regular waiting time should be 20 mins over the phone but was asked to pick up in 30 minutes because it was very busy. 30 minutes has gone by - food was not ready. The waitress was NOT apologetic and took it for granted asked for 10-15 more minutes. She also said she was totally okay if I wanted to cancel the order. This is my sister and my local go to for sushi when we don't want to travel all the way to Kotobuki in Hauppague. Most times we order take out, but from occasion, we dine here with friends. My favorite appetizers there are the crispy roasted duck and the ocean blossom. The ocean blossom is served resting on a bed of black forbidden rice in a savory sauce. The ocean blossom itself is various cuts of fish that it plated on top of shredded daikon and topped with masago in a crunchy rice paper bowl. They also have lots of inventive specialty rolls that have classic and adventurous combinations. My favorites are crispy duck roll and volcano roll. They're fish is very fresh and the servers are great in service. It is a short 10 minute walk or 3 minute drive from the Merrick train station. There is both street parking and a parking lot to the left of the building to leave your car. read more

Was craving a legitimate omakase quality sushi experience and got just that at Sushi Ko, an extremely unassuming sushi restaurant in Merrick. The fish quality was right on point. It was ALL so fresh!! The best fish of the night was the blue fin o-toro with a wasabi concoction on top. The portions are also generous without being too big. Other stand outs of the night were the mejina (large scale black fish), sweet shrimp, scallop and ikura served on a shiso leaf 'taco'. James, the owner is very knowledgable on sake and sushi because he's a connoisseur himself. It was such a great dining experience! Sushi Ko is your typical Long Island sushi joint. I came here for a casual Sunday dinner and at 6pm they were empty, by 7 they were starting to fill up. We felt very rushed when we were seated. Mind you, the place was completely empty. Take a chill pill people! Quit trying to turn tables when there aren't even customers yet. Anyway, we had shumai as our appetizer and each got a few rolls for our entrees. I had the banana roll with black rice and a spicy salmon naruto roll. Both were fresh but the banana roll looked a bit sloppy. Still good though. They have a great selection of special rolls and they have so many alternative options like brown rice, black rice, and naruto for all you health freaks out there. I was in the mood for some sushi and this place wasn't too far from me. They seat you pretty quickly and get started on the drinks which I liked. The menu was a bit overwhelming for me becausw I had no idea what I really wanted and the sushi options were pretty diverse. I started off with the calamari and it was really good. It comes with this dipping sauce that really added flavor to it. I also got the Passion roll (I think that's what it's called) and it comes with mango in it.
