Wow. First time leaving a review on yelp because I really want to share with the world how great the sashimi was here. Honestly, it was better (and cheaper) than what I've had at a few of the most highly revered sushi places on the island - and with larger portions! I am so glad that I have found a great sushi place in southwest Nassau County so I don't have to drive forever to have great sushi (I miss you, Satsuke). I also liked that they have Natto and the waitress was very friendly and accommodating to me and my parents. Wow. We used to go here before Sushi Ko moved. We wanted to support another local business and love sushi so we gave it a try. We were so glad we did. We were greeted as soon as we entered the door. The decor was really nice with hand painted murals on the walls. We started with agedashi tofu. It was different than the usual dish. This was very lightly fried with a wonderful sauce. The miso soup was flavorful, the salad refreshing and the seaweed salad was nice too. The fish was outstanding. Super fresh and melted in your mouth. It was wonderful. We also tried their tamago. It was incredible! Perfect consistency and maybe the best testing one I have ever had. The owner came and spoke to us for a while and she was lovely. We will definitely be back. read more

Ordered on-line for lunch. Wow. I was hugely impressed. Ordered the 3-roll special. I had eel with avocado, salmon with avocado and tuna with avocado (yes, I like avocado). Also came with a small salad (with ginger dressing) and miso soup. It was all neatly packed in a cute pink bag (see photo). The sushi was top notch. The pieces were packed with cuts of fish that were both tasty and fresh. The lunch was very enjoyable and rather inexpensive. I would highly recommend going and checking it out. Wanted to try this new spot. We were greeted and seated. Menu seemed expansive and we ordered sushi and ramen. Sushi was good however I didn't expect the crab to be the standard 'fake crab stick'. Figured it would be authentic so that was disappointing. Everything else was tasty and fresh. Ramen was a nice serving but nothing special. It was on the same level as any other ramen. We ordered a Seafood Udon soup to go and on the way out the bag felt very warm and fluid like. Opened the bag and the soup had spilled. Luckily it was a plastic lined bag and I returned and they handled it. The kicker was when we arrived home we opened the soup as a snack. The Seafood Udon consisted of noodles and shrimp only. Didn't expect something titled as SEAFOOD to be strictly fish and that was disappointing. Overall it was a decent meal and they did give us 10% off for their Grand Opening which was a nice gesture. I ordered takeout twice. Sushi was just ok. Their salad dressing was awful, tastes like bad oil and like they forgot to add ginger to it when making it, it was the right color- vibrant orange- but the flavor was awful. I couldn't eat it. Miso soup is standard but they fill the container only halfway. Don't think their fish quality is that good. After trying twice I won't again. Was hoping for a good place! read more

If you miss authentic Japanese food, Hanami should hit the spot. These days every town and neighborhood easily has 5 or more Japanese food restaurants within 5 to 10 minutes driving. Many are fusion restaurants combining hibachi, sushi and other Asian food with stylish decor. But when it comes to traditional Japanese cooked food, many claim authenticity yet fall way short. I saw Newsday's review on Hanami a couple of days ago, checked out the Yelp reviews and photos and decided to try them. When I try out a new Japanese or Thai or Vietnamese or Chinese spot, I like to get just a couple of basic apps and dishes first. If they can't get the basic flavors right then the rest is not worth trying. Agedashi tofu is a simple and common app on menus of many Japanese restaurants old and new, most of the ones that I've been to on Long Island don't make it the right way. Instead of using dashi which is a basic Japanese soup stock (A-ge means deep fry, dashi is the stock), most places serve up some diluted soy sauce for dipping and don't even bother with grated daikon or bonito flakes. The photo of Hanami's agedashi tofu looked hopeful, and it did not disappoint, tasted like the good, traditional ones I've had before. The fried oysters are also traditional in the best way. I appreciate the butter-sauteed versions that other spots serve these days, but Hanami's is to me authentic Japanese food. The owner having lived and been an izakaya chef in Japan for many years per Newsday, I can picture her insisting on serving food prepared traditionally. I look forward to returning and trying the rest of their food. read more
