I had the all you can eat deal here and let me tell you, not bad at all for Rio rancho New Mexico sushi . The bar was very low going into this but I'll say this is definitely now the only sushi place in New Mexico that I actually enjoyed most of the food at. The spicy edamame was fantastic 10/10, nothing to critique here, outstanding. The popcorn lobster roll was almost perfect, combo of sauces were really good, my only critique was too much popcorn not enough lobster haha. But I get it, it's all you can eat, I'm not complaining, I might even order it again. They were kind enough to let me have an avocado maki instead of a cucumber maki, it was so delicious, might have been my favorite part of the meal. I wish the owner reads this and would consider adding it to their menu, I would love to order this on DoorDash. Their fried rice was really good, I wish there was an option to add pineapple and make it spicy. The rice was perfect in texture and it had the right balance of egg and ingredients. Very good fried rice! The only thing I strongly didn't like was the ramen, the noodles were so soft they turned to mush, and the broth didn't have much ingredients and it was salty. I heard they had an all you can eat menu so I had to give it a try. It's a bit different than their regular menu. See the photos. I think the star of our experience was the popcorn roll which had fried lobster bits on top. Those were delicious but it was definitely a lot of food! I also ordered some nigiri to try out the fish itself. It was a bit odd since both the yellowtail and white tuna were a bit vinegary which surprised me. I moved here from the Pacific Northwest a while back and I'm still on the search for good sushi. I've tried about 4 places and really haven't found one i love. It's not a fair comparison really I guess since this is a landlocked state. This place was pretty decent for lunch. They have several different price levels for rolls and I tried a couple. I had one that had fried unagi on the inside and spicy tuna on the outside which was good. I also had a softshell crab one that was decent. We had Monkey Balls as an appetizer and I partly ordered because the name makes me laugh because I'm a 60 year old child. But this version was one of the best ones I've had with a nice crispy batter. The server was really nice and the vibe in the place is more diner than sushi joint but comfortable and friendly. If you're up in that area for lunch it's a good choice. read more

I've been to other Sushi King locations in the past. This is my first time to this one. Came for lunch on a weekday. I had the salmon bento box. My salmon was cooked well and I liked the selection of tempura that comes with the bento box. I especially loved the mushroom tempura. Most other sushi places do not include a mushroom in their tempura. A bunch of other sushi was ordered which came out looking pretty spectacular. Certainly picture worthy. The food here was ok. I had a vegetable tempura and a pan fried spicy sesame udon with fried tofu. They both tasted ok. The vegetable tempura came in small pieces...a little sad I supposed. The noodles...I just wished the food could have been a little better. It was quite blind tasting and slightly off-putting with just spicy-led taste..but not as much other flavors. If I go back, I would probably be ok getting tempura again (a little expensive I think for small pieces)...and will definitely pass on the spicy sesame noodles (pro tip: try something else!). Worst sushi I have ever had! The fish was old they put lemon on it to try to hide it. Miso was more water and seaweed than actual miso. The waitresses had long nails. Thier fingers and nails kept touching peoples food as they carried it to the table. They were always touching their face and hair and never washed their hands while i was there. Though this place was not in our area, I'm so glad we found it! My daughter and I cherish our girls nights, and this will likely be our go-to spot. As soon as we walked in, we were greeted. Look, I get that there is a shortage of staff across the state right now but it should not take 30 minutes for our waitress to remember we are sitting at one of her tables. Whenever we walked in, there was only TWO clean tables (from what we could see).... How does that happen? We ordered the AYCE which we have gotten numerous times before. Upon finishing our order, our waitress just....walked away. No confirmation or recital of the order just to confirm she wrote it all accurately, no "thank you, it'll come out shortly", no "please let me know if I can get you anything else"; literally nothing. Not only this, we sat right beside the sushi chef and saw him place our platters of sushi on the wall for the servers to grab and deliver to our table - however, it took them nearly 10 minutes to finally deliver the food. I am still hungry and really wanted to go all out on the AYCE (as per our normal routine here) but again, we couldn't flag down our waitress to put that order in. Despite walking by us numerous times, we were left feeling ignored. Again, I understand being understaffed and have the compassion to give people breaks, but we have never had this issue before under similar circumstances as tonight. Especially given that the restaurant was less than 50% full, it is unacceptable in my eyes to be this lackluster. If it paints the picture better, I have been writing this review in the restaurant for the last 10 minutes and we still haven't even gotten more than a glance over here. I used to really like this place. This was always the go-to for sushi cravings because it is not far from my home and I felt that you could get a pretty decent amount of sushi for the cost. The service was usually good and the place was usually fairly quiet and nice to have a quiet dinner. Today, I was completely turned off by their dishonesty. The service and food were good, but where they significantly shorted us was on two of our plates. We're had ordered 2 combo Cs which are supposed to come with 8 pieces California roll and 3 pieces each of the NM Roll and Crispy Roll: a total of 14 pieces. When the food arrived I had to do a double take because the plates looked sort of not right. I noticed there were only 6 pieces California roll on each. Everyone was starving so before I could check the menu to let the waitress know we had been shorted the kids started eating. So I did not really have good proof to show we had been shorted. I was already kind of not happy about this, but figured that maybe it was a honest mistake. The kids were eating these plates anyway and would probably not end out finishing it. So I let this slide because of all our previous good experiences here. So then the check comes. As I had mentioned, we eat here often and often get the same things, so I have a good knowledge of what the total comes out to before tip. I take a look at the itemized receipt and noticed the waitress, who we were happy with and I had planned on tipping well, had went in and added the group gratuity to our check. I go back to the menu again and cannot find any note saying they automatically add gratuity for parties of a certain size. From my experience, when restaurants do this it is usually for parties of 6 or more and other times 8 or more. We are a party of three adults and two young children. We go here all the time and have never had this tacked on. Not cool. I calculated it out and it was 18% added gratuity. At this point I felt really disappointed in them. By the waitress adding this on, she actually screwed herself because I usually tip more than 18% when the service is good. She had been excellent to this point and I was planning on leaving her a 25% tip. I told myself "screw it" and just paid it. The payment receipt shows up and it still has a gratuity section asking for additional tip. Haha, nice try. I gladly wrote in "tip already included" and totaled it out to total of the itemized receipt. With this experience and having similar things happen to me at other restaurants over the years, I decided to snap a picture of the payment receipt I signed at which point I noticed another waiter watching me do this. I did this for proof in case they try anything funny when they finalize the receipt in the system. When we left, I think the waiter who watched me take a picture of the receipt had told our waitress about this. No one thanked us on our way out which they usually do. It is too bad that this had to happen, as I really enjoyed eating here. Sad to say but this dishonest experience is the reason I will not be returning. This was our first time visiting this location. We usually visit the location in Rio Rancho. This one is much bigger. Just know that there is a private parking lot for this mini mall where this restaurant is located. And that it can take a while to get out of the lot because you are driving into the Coors road. Got into the restaurant and was greeted by friendly staff members. We were able to sit where we wanted so we decided to sit at a booth. We were served drinks right away. Which is always a good thing. The server gave us a few minutes to look over the menu. We decided on vegetable tempura and gyoza as our appetizers, then ordered a crispy roll and a crunch roll. Gyoza is always delicious as an appetizer. The vegetable tempura was a little on the heavy side for us. It wasn't lightly battered, more cake-like texture than fried. So that wasn't our favorite. As for the sushi rolls, they were enjoyable to the palate. We may not be back for a second visit due to it being in a high traffic area. But I commend the servers and sushi chefs. Sushi is good and consistent. They have changed over the last few years. Servings have gone down in size and up in price. I'm aware that most places have adjusted their prices but Sushi King used to be a better deal than other sushi places. Now it's the same price but not as good in quality than other options. They also used to have staff that was friendly and would take custom orders. No more custom orders. Staff is nice but not as professional as it used to be. This was my regular spot for over a decade. Generally I don't like leaving reviews primarily because I know most businesses are trying their best and mistakes happen. That said Sushi King, for the prices you're charging you need to elevate your standards both with the servers, and the ambiance. The booth I sat at was torn all the way through with cushion falling out, strands of the seat caught on my jeans. When my party entered your restaurant we were instructed to seat our selves. We did so and continued to watch our server play on her phone behind the counter. She eventually brought us a singular menu to share that was falling apart. Once we placed our orders we waited a substantial amount of time for our meals, in which our server failed to refill our drinks, bring us napkins, and or utensils. This could be forgiven if the restaurant was close to capacity. It was not, it was maybe 50 percent full. I'd also like to note our server had an obnoxiously large septum piercing and 2inch nails. In any other context I genuinely wouldn't care. But her presentation seemed unprofessional and unsanitary. When our sushi arrived we had to sit, stare at our food and wait for our server to bring us utensils. I ended up spending just under one hundred dollars for two people, for average sushi with a subpar experience. I've eaten at this restaurant for years. I won't be back. read more

The four pieces of California roll that were included were tiny. I've actually never seen such small pieces in any previous Japanese restaurant. No wasabi was included with my lunch. I love trying new sushi spots in town and this one was pretty good. We got the salmon roll (which was simple and I loved it). We got the crunchy roll, coconut shrimp, gyoza and scallops. Everything was good but nothing too special. The ambiance wasn't eye catching. The service was decent I had to wave down the waiter to get our order in. I had been craving tempura so I thought I'd give this place a try. I was so disappointed. The shrimp tempura was undercooked and mushy inside. I ended up throwing it away. Later that evening I realized why it was so bad. It was the exact same shrimp tempura that I had bought at Costco & still had in my freezer! See pic. No bueno. The vegetable tempura was not the best either. Although it was wonderfully cooked, flavorful & crispy, it needed more variety of vegetables. There was far more pieces of carrots than anything else. I did enjoy their Crunchy Roll (Steamed shrimp, tempura flakes, cucumber and eel sauce) which was delicious and very filling. It wasn't too spicy, just enough crunch & eel sauce. We ordered gyoza and edamame w/ hot green tea for apps. Main course (family) tried the chicken yakisoba, tuna roll, salmon roll, shrimp tempura roll and the NM roll. All were really tasty! A handful of good spots have kept me searching for good desert sushi. This spot definitely meets the standards. Staff was very attentive and nice. Seated immediately. What seemed to be a short staffed restaurant during a pretty busy lunch rush had no issues getting the food out and checking in frequently. It seemed that the restaurant changed management hands given the significant change in service level. Before, they couldn't be more responsive and attentive. Now, with a SIGNIFICANTLY younger wait-staff, they were slow and borderline incompetent. We had to remind them multiple times about getting our drink order right. I think they realized the error as we weren't charged for the drinks. The food quality had also lessened but not as much as the service level. You'll be hard pressed to find better service. This place is just straight CHEERFUL and so so good. Our server was fast, incredibly nice, and took great care of us. She kept our glasses full and even brought us to-go cups when she picked up the check. We ordered the Rio Rancho roll, the El Diablo roll and some nigiri. Everything was amazing, so I can't imagine there are any bad choices. What did we love? My personal favorite was the Rio Rancho--hard to go wrong with anything that has green chile, cream cheese and is deep fried, but still! I went back yesterday evening and I was pleasantly surprised. It was so clean. I've never seen such a clean restaurant. The window ledges were clean and free of dust. The bathrooms were spotless. The booths look like they have been reupholstered and they were clean. I was so impressed. The food tasted better as well and it came out fast.
