    Platter (40 pc)

Got take out from uber eats. I got the platter and a philly roll on the ride. So portions are pretty small then I'm used to but rolls were good. The platter had 3 different types of yam or sweet potato rolls which we didn't like so much. But the rest were good. For the philly roll I didn't like it at all. Wasn't like any other place I've tried. Didn't even taste like it had cream cheese in it.

I was starving around the area with the constant thought of been awarded the Sushi Sensei badge by Yelp. I followed the directions and ended in a modest, famil-run establishment. Let's be honest, most of the buildings around the area could use a makeover. Sushi Karu is located in an old place that gives the impression of have been decorated and upgraded as the business goes up. There are nice details in the washroom and cashier area that embrace Japanese accents. I didn't go there for the view but for the food. In that matter I can say that the three items I ordered for were solid. A good portion of sea weed with a discrete seasoning. Good quality and perfect temperature for the avocado and tuna tartar. Fresh, light, and harmonic combination in the Futo Roll. I would go back or order from them. It's a small place with just one 6ppl table available.

    Regular sushi combo

I had a hankering for sushi over the weekend and didn't want to travel far for it. I remember that this place just opened up and made my order on the phone for pick up. I had a lot of reservations, as I found the last iteration of this restaurant (different owners) to be pretty ho-hum. I was pleasantly surprised. I ordered a regular sushi combo (8 pieces of nigiri, 6 California rolls) and a miso soup, and it came to $15. When I went to pick it up, the chef was the only person there and I got my food right away. The space is much more welcoming now with an open kitchen. The sushi was pretty fresh and the rice was great. It was the perfect amount of food. The menu is pretty robust with Korean option and a few types of bao! I will definitely check this spot out again to try out their other offerings. Also, they deliver over $30, so next time I won't even have to leave my house!

Food is phenomenal! We had chicken teriyaki bento and tempura as well as some rolls. Presentation was great. Best Japanese in the area.

There's no reservation system but they do have a waitlist on Yelp which gets you in line (highly recommended). First to know is you can't pay with credit card here--there's an ATM in the front of the restaurant. As far as the restaurant goes, it was fantastic from start to finish. Our table of 4 was seated and serviced by 1 main staff member, Lydia, who talked us through the whole menu and ordering system, recommended some great starts and then kept us frequently updated all throughout dinner. She checked up on us along with her assistants who were also bringing items and servicing the table. The food quality was excellent with juicy and flavorful cuts of beef along with the shrimp, pork, veggies, side dishes/ponchon, and rice--it kept coming consistently. Grill changes were frequent as well. The atmosphere is lively and there are a lot of servers so you aren't trying get someone's attention all the time. But it doesn't feel too cramped at the same time. As it is AYCE, everyone in our group left full of course and enjoyed each course. I liked the almond tofu at the end! ----TL;DR---- Pros: great selection of meats, quality was top notch, huge portions of course as it is AYCE, service was prompt and all staff were really friendly. Cons: no reservations so need to be on a waitlist. The no credit card system is a bit of an inconvenience. Bottom Line: we loved it--definitely would go back again and enjoy more of their selections! You have to try them if you like meat and AYCE!

It's my go-to spot to get my don fix - I love the wide variety of dons (rice bowls) that they offer with various fish and seafood combinations. There are also unique appetizers in the menu, such as Purple Yam Croquettes, Crab Crackers, Braised Bamboo Shoots with Shirasu (immature whitebait fish), and Takowasa (marinated raw octopus pieces, to be eaten with or wrapped in nori / seaweed). Although the dons are the main highlight of their menu (hence the restaurant name), they also offer traditional sushi, sashimi, sushi rolls and sets (similar to other Japanese sushi restaurants). Miso Aburi Scallops were very flavourful - nicely torched, giving the scallops a nice grill / char taste. They came with red and green seaweed, and a bit of fish roe. Large Premium Hana Don contained a good amount of fish and seafood, including a whole abalone, uni, shrimp in the shell, aburi salmon, ikura (salmon roe), salmon sashimi, tuna sashimi, yellowtail sashimi, other various fish sashimi, tamago (egg), and a few slices of cucumber on a generous bed of rice. I liked that the rice was a mix of white rice and some type of dark-coloured grains. Unatama Don came with a big piece of unagi and tamago (egg) that were both excellent. The sashimi were all fresh. Okonomiyaki was disappointing but it was sort of expected... for only $9, it was about 99% just flour pan-fried in a patty, without any substantial fillings (unlike real okonomiyaki, which usually contains protein / seafood, cabbage, eggs, and other ingredients). Location is super convenient near Bay & Dundas, ambiance is very casual, and service is quick.

The ambience of the restaurant is chill, plenty of seating. It can get loud when it's full, but that's the vibe. I was stuck between the sweet shrimp bowl and the uni bowl.... I think i like the uni/ikura/scallops combo a lot more than the sweet shrimp. I love the taste of the rice bowls! absolutely will come back in my next trip to Toronto!

We got a bunch of dishes to share and overall liked most things but some things (like the oyster) unfortunately didn't hit as well. Wagyu - thin slices but very tender and very flavorful with the cheese - surprised by how well the flavor combo worked out. Tofu - easily one of my fave agedashi tofu. Huge tofu slices with very chewy outer texture, a bit gelatinous . Really went well with the sauce and toppings Carbonara - nice chewy texture to the udon, not too soft and not too firm. The sauce was nice and creamy. Not as truffley as I thought it would be, wish it was a little more but it was still pretty good Oyster - least favorite of all the dishes we got today. It was a bit sour and the cheese felt like it didn't really help the flavor profile of the oysters. It was super oily from the cheese, felt like it was drowning in cheese/oil flavor Cod - it looks good but something is lacking, maybe in taste? Feel like maybe the marinade did not penetrate enough. The texture is still nice and soft , with a crisp skin . Also was a bit too oily for our liking, compared to other miso cod we have had. It was also a relatively smaller piece of cod. Overall, the appetizers were really good! The oyster and cod were a bit disappointing. Would come back for the carbonara and the other appetizers mentioned though!
