Was just okay. A little uncomfortable experience overall. Went alone and was kinda stared at by customers but the employees were very sweet and would occasionally check up on me, to see if I was enjoying my meal and safe. Maybe this is because I look like I'm 12 years old (but I'm 18 and can handle myself). I ordered a lobster hand roll, the San Jose 10 piece roll, and a chicken katsu bowl. The hand roll was smaller than anticipated but still super tasty. I liked the San Jose set because of it's super creamy texture and tasty sauce. The roe was a nice change of pace. The only thing I had against it was the fact that the salmon felt as if it was cooked - it was a weird consistency, and paired alongside avocado was a little much. The rolls were deep fried and this is probably what caused it. So that's just a little blip on my own end, haha. My favorite part of the dinner was the chicken katsu!!! I 100% recommend this. I'd never had it before but it was delicious, super savory, and such a hearty portion. I took most of it home and will continue to enjoy it... *** The only part that I disliked about dinner was the fact that I paid for a 10 piece set and only ate 8 of the sushi rolls. The waitress came by once after being a little weird throughout dinner and asked me if I needed a to go box, I said yes. Had begun to put the chicken katsu away and still had the plate with 2 pieces of sushi on it. She asked me before she grabbed boxes if I would take the pieces home and I said no, I will finish them in the restaurant. She nodded and went away, but once I had put the chicken katsu away and she had come back with the check, hastily grabbed all of my plates and went away faster than I could object. I paid for more than I ate which I was pretty upset about. 2 pieces of sushi still makes quite the difference in price. Once I was given the check, I was stared at pretty intensely by the staff members. The end of my meal was rushed and uncomfortable. 2.5 stars rounded up Sushi in downtown Spokane is almost a joke, it seems to be a race to the bottom, even the half-way decent Sushi-yama has taken a turn for the worse so don't be expecting anything super here. I think most of these restaurants live off of the tourist trade so you might want to expect that quality of food. As other yelpers have pointed out the sushi here is hit and miss, it seems if there isn't a convention or other activity in town (Bloomsday, hoopfest, triathlon, etc) you might be getting a thawed out piece of fish on your sushi rice. Just be aware that if they are busy they get really bogged down so expect some long waits. If you are stuck downtown and you are yearning for sushi this is probably your best bet. NOTE: Sushi Yama, also downtown, is good for sushi only, but more expensive and a much farther walk through a slightly rougher part of town. The Korean food at sushi Yama is meh, skip it. While I sat down I explained that I wanted to get started on appetizers while he parked. She must've not read the hunger in my eyes because she waited for him to come back before she took the order. I'll start off by saying.... I eat tons of sushi and do consider myself to be well versed in sushi. I typically judge a sushi restaurant based on their sashimi rather than their rolls. I started off with hamachi and toro. The hamachi was average, cut way too thin. The toro on the other hand.... HUGE disappointment! It was beyond ice cold, still had a "firm" frozen texture. When I asked about it, I was told that it had not been taken out of the freezer. It took well over 10 minutes from the first bite to become an edible texture. The food is FRESH and nori mild - so no fishy taste here. It's fun to the sit at the counter and watch the rolls being made and interact with the staff. Great service and the prices are reasonable too. It is not as sexy inside as Maru, but the food has more flavor, and the nori is softer and milder in flavor. If I recall correctly, it took our server four trips to bring everything. I decided to get the sea urchin experiment out of the way first. Take a large marshmallow and soak it for weeks in a marinade of sock sweat, aquarium water, and green olive juice. Then, let it sit out on the courtesy counter of a back alley whorehouse for 324 nights so it gets nice and rubbery. Inject it with a syringe of the mucous from Larry King's soft membrane. Serve chilled. "Mmm, what fantastic sea urchin. Perfect", amazed Bryan as I reached for my sake cup to chase the whole nasty mess down in one labored gulp. Needless to say, an acquired taste and not one that I will ever actually acquire. Happily, everything else I tried was supremely tasty. The California roll and Spicy Tuna roll were right up my alley, fresh and vibrant. I actually love octopus if done right, and their was, with mild flavor that's set off fantastically with lots of wasabi and soy, and not at all chewy in texture like the Tako I've had at some places. The Ebi was similarly fine, but it's difficult to flounce too bad with just plain shrimp. The highlight of the entire meal for me was the Volcano roll, which included tempura coated soft-shell crab and scallop, and with the roll itself battered and fried and then hidden on a platter underneath a mountain of tempura crumbles decoratively covered in a tangy brown sauce. Deep fried times three equals heaven, naturally. I can't report on the surf clam, the mackerel, the salmon skin roll, and especially not the flying fish roe with raw quail egg (yuck!) because I was either too squeamish or too full to even try a bite. We'll have to believe Bryan when he says that everything was spectacular, which he assured me as he was paying a tab that was shockingly close to several days worth of wages, for me at least. From the moment I walked in I felt welcome. The staff was attentive, fun, and friendly. I sat at the bar, ordered 3 rolls (all of which were perfect) and enjoyed light conversation with the staff. It was a perfect night. The tables and booths give enough room for small to medium sized groups to not bother each other. So having an quiet evening is still within reach even if they are busy. Although seated and served fairly quickly, at the end of the meal, it was difficult to actually get the bill from the waiter. Overall, the food was really quite bland. The pot sticker filling had little texture and flavor, just a soggy lump of meat. Dipping sauce was unexciting, maybe a couple of different spices were thrown in to distinguish it from something coming out of a bottle. The miso soup was quite forgettable, although for the price( I think it was under $2.00) maybe not such a bad deal. Not too much to say about the sushi either, just that none of the rolls stood out and the quality of fish on my plate left me feeling as though I had lost the "best dish" battle with my dining partner that night. Like I've said in all my other reviews, price is my primary focus when it comes to sushi. Especially with how frequently I consume it, I'm what some might consider cheap (I like to call it frugal). That in mind, Sushi.com only gets three stars from me. It's primary downfall is indeed high prices. Like a number of Spokane establishments, it simply is too pricy for what is being offered. However, the fish was very fresh, the restaurant is a nice building with great location, and the service is above average (6/10). Now, if I had bags of money to throw around, Sushi.com would get 5 stars. But I don't. Most people don't. She ended up recommending me the Cougar, which includes salmon, avocado, cucumber, and smelt roe and topped with tuna, salmon, yellowtail, and snapper. The roll only came with 8 pieces, but it was priced at $15.95. Personally, I felt like the sushi was pretty standard. I guess coming from the Bay, I've been quite lucky to try a variety of places that put a lot of fresh fish in/on top of their rolls while still keeping their prices relatively cheap. I felt that even though the roll had fresh fish, it wasn't as much as I thought it would be. Also, even though the roll came with 8 pieces, I didn't quite feel satisfied at the end of my meal. I don't eat that much, but after I finished my meal today, I still felt a little hungry. Came here for lunch and boy is it pricy! The bento boxes are decent though. You get a good amount of meat (we had the katsu and teriyaki beef). The agedashi tofu was good too but did not stand out among the other agedashi tofu I've tried. What really blew the price out of the water was our roll. Got the special roll which consisted of salmon, mango, cucumbers wrapped with radish. We got 4 pieces (not big at all) and it was 13 dollars. The radish wrap was very strong and I ended up having to toss the last wrap and just ate the inside. Our total price was about $40 with tip. First i must say I'm a pretty picky sushi eater; because i know authentic vs the american version. This place is by far the best I've tried in the Spokane area. The grade of sushi seems to be on par with the better restaurants with decent proportions. My wish would be that the staff be a little more friendly and personable.
