Upon entering, you feel a sense of traveling to Japan. The ambiance feels like you're at a very traditional Japanese restaurant. It is an excellent place to bring a date. The music and lighting set the mood. The host/server greets you upon entry. He was very hospitable and tended to our every need. Brought water before us asking. Cleared menus but kept them close. Explained the happy hour menu. The food was delicious. The sushi was fresh. The rolls were well made. Overall, it was a great dining experience.

On a Friday night when my nanny is away I took my son here for a date. We ordered wagyu sushi that my son wanted seconds... and he saved the one piece of uneaten sesame chicken for lunch. I ordered the soft shell crab appetizer, hamachi sashimi and spicy mayo scallop sushi. Everything is perfect and I am glad to have taken my son to this hidden gem in Studio City. Seriously, Casper is harder to please than your average foodie; he ate everything.

Sushi 101 has been a standard for me since before 1990 and is still my go-to for a fantastic meal and a Saporro. A local favorite for NoHo residents and celebrities alike. I recommend immensely.

Local, small cozy, neighborhood Sushi eatery run by a Japanese Sushi chef. Friday night and the place is hopping. Yes, you can order the California-ized rolls w/ county fair triumvirate of sriracha, mayonnaise, "eel sauce", but this chef can do excellent, traditional Èdomaè Nigiri (Eh doh mah eh Nee ghee ree ) Sushi & classic Sashimi. 1) Suzuki/sea bass Sashimi: White meat marked by reddish pink & white stripes. Soft, lush velvety texture along w/ sweet ocean, meaty minerality. Dressed w/ acidic Ponzu sauce which acts as a gastrique combining Shōyu/soy sauce, Japanese rice vinegar, touch of lemon. 2) Hiramè/halibut Sashimi: Slices of alabaster colored, fIne white fish. Texture is soft yet firm. Refreshing light taste of the sea. In Ponzu sauce, scattering of fine chiffonade of green onion. Sliced grape tomato. Yuzu Koshō which is a fine paste of Yuzu/Japanese citrus zest, green chiles adding piquant, spicy, citrus aromatics to enliven the clean tasting Hiramè. 3) Fried Albacore seems Thai influenced. Tossed in a light sweet sour sauce w/ greens on a bed of deep fried mai fun puffed rice noodles looking like styrofoam packing squiggles. All the surrounding flavours are right, but the albacore nuggets themselves are overfried so the meat ends up dry, hard, tasteless. 4) Hon Maguro/bluefin tuna Sashimi Sampler: a) Aka Mi is near the shoulder. Dark, blood red like a good beef steak and probably aged 2-3 days to increase its meaty, blood rich Umami as well as adding a lush velvety, melt in your mouth texture. b) Aburi/seared Aka Mi so the outer layer is cooked for more of a chaw in contrast to the softer interior. Garnished w/ a chiffonade of green onion. c) Chū Toro is closer to the belly. Semi fatty compared to Ōtoro which can be almost dripping in good fish fattiness. The Chū Toro fat melts close to body temperature for full mouth richness that subtly increases as one chews. All above garnished w/ thin strands of Daikon/Japanese radish and Shiso/Japanese "basil" leaf which is meant to be eaten as a healthful addition to aid in digestion & fibre to cleanse the digestive tract to possibly prevent cancer. Sushi 101 is a fine addition for people living in the Southeast San Fernando Valley. There is a warm buzz of satisfied customers. 4 stars

Elizabeth's Star Rating System 1 star = Terrible, would not recommend, will tell family and friends to avoid 2 stars = I won't be back but you might enjoy it 3 stars = I'll be back eventually 4 stars = I'll definitely be back 5 stars = I'm telling my friends and family about this place! GETTING THERE: Small plaza parking lot but real parking easily. ARRIVAL: Greeted promptly and while we initially thought of takeout, decided to do dine in. Seems to be mostly regulars here. FOOD/DRINKS: Shrimp tempura tasted fresh, not too oily. Hand rolls were pretty filling, great price! Sushi combination dinner special included nigiri pieces and California roll. The yellowtail collar was a steal and so good! So good that we ordered two! Ikura sushi was good and generous amount of the eggs. SERVICE: Socially distant while being attentive. The sushi chef was very friendly. AMBIENCE: No frills, but very typical of other small Japanese restaurants I grew up going to. OVERALL: Highly recommend this small business! I can't wait for my next visit!

We totally thought we'd have to wait but were able to be seated immediately. We also learned this time that while the parking lot remains ultra packed, there is a large outdoor parking lot the side street over for the businesses there that are closed at night (minus the gym) so I think its fine to park there. Spicy Tuna Okoge 5/5, we came for this and this is what I titled "Crunchy rice spicy tuna appetizer" in my last review, pasted here: very fun, comes cut into 4 pieces, definitely a fun appetizer, our waitress recommended this and said it's one of their more popular items Spicy Salmon cut roll 5/5, mildly spicy but leaves you with a stronger spicy aftertaste, soft and very fresh! We would reorder this! Scallop cut roll 3.5/5, fresh but just felt like it was missing something. I think the scallops need more than just a rice wrap. This was improved with soy sauce I think in the future we'd stick to ordering scallops in a more special roll

To this day, whenever he's in town, I'm there with them, sitting at the bar. The food here is made with love and every item on the menu feels incredibly authentic and flavorful. From sashimi to rolls to the hot dishes, it's all an experience. One of our favorites is the Salmon Toro with Black Caviar- rich, buttery salmon topped with caviar that just elevates the bite. We also love the snapper, uni, oyster uni shooters, soft shell crab hand rolls, and the spicy tuna on crispy rice- honestly, every menu item we've tried has been incredible. And the sweet shrimp (amaebi) is a must. They serve it beautifully fresh and then tempura-batter the shrimp heads so you get that crispy, savory crunch after the delicate sweetness of the shrimp. It's one of those details that makes Chiba so special. Chiba doesn't just serve food, it serves memories. It's fresh, soulful, and just downright delicious. If you love real, honest Japanese flavor, this place should absolutely be on your list.

The fish was buttery soft. So fresh and flavorful. And the Baby Spicy Tuna Crispy Rice Cake was easily one of the best crispy rice dishes I've had. The ratio of spicy tuna to crispy rice was perfect and the portions were actually good too, which a lot of places mess up. Every bite was perfect. We ate here last night, and shortly after I started vomiting and dealing with diarrhea throughout the entire night. It was one of the worst reactions I've had after eating out. What's even more frustrating is that I tried calling the restaurant afterward to notify them and discuss the situation, but I couldn't get ahold of anyone even after leaving a voicemail. I understand things can happen, but food safety should be taken seriously, and the lack of response afterward made the situation even worse. Very disappointed after what had previously been good experiences here.

The entire menu is on the screen, and you order, and they bring it to you. You also order your drinks and can call your waiter from the tablet. I ordered the teriyaki chicken; the bowl was huge, and it cost about 14 dollars. I thought the portion was great, and I got free miso soup to go along with it, so it was a lot of food. However, I did not think the food was too great. For such a big bowl they put very little sauce, and to top it off, the chicken is dry, so I needed to add a lot of soy sauce and extra teriyaki sauce, which I had to request in order to be able to eat it. I've had better teriyaki chicken from Yoshinoya, unfortunately. The service was great; I got serviced quickly after calling for a server on the tablet, but I also felt she was annoyed on my visit because she looked irritated, and it made me feel slightly unwelcome.
