I'm generally a fan of Arepas, which are cornmeal disks filled to the brim with meats and veg. What's not to like? I went with their pabellon arepa, which was filled with shredded beef, plantains, black beans, cheese, and spicy green sauce. The meal was filling and hearty, but it just didn't hit the spot for me on this visit. My garlic plantains were too crispy (bordering on hard). Arepas are one of my favorite dishes as I love the thick cornmeal crust, but the texture of the cornmeal and meat was a little dry for my preferences. I'm glad that Sus Arepas has brought some representation of Venezuela to DTLA; however, I might need to try another arepa from here next time. read more

Went to smorgasburg for the first time today and found this gem! The Ktown arepas is really flavorful and the garlic yucca fries is super crunchy with a nice garlic flavor. been meaning to try this spot and i'm glad i did! i didn't know it was a korean/colombian fusion. the arepa is huge and soo filling! the meat is soft and slightly sweet, the maduros were perfect, and the beans were well seasoned and cooked. the yucca fries were crispy and fried well so it didn't have that starchy feeling. the sauces are delicious too. great service and calm interior. read more

Bomb bomb bomb!! A new Smorgasburg favorite is Sus Arepas! They've now ventured into the "must have" for every Sunday Smorgasburg rendezvous. I'm no arepa aficionado, however this arepa was everything I wanted it to be, and more. First off, it's just beautiful to look at; all of the delicious fixins' stuffed into that little warm pocket of goodness. However, once I bit into it, the flavors and textures really came to life. As obvious as it may seem, my favorite thing about any food, is the flavor. That being said, the texture of this arepa really made an instant impression on me; it was crispy! That beautiful crisp on the outside just blanketed the soft, and creamy, freshness that lied beneath. If you know me well, you can be sure that there were several expletives exclaimed after every other palette pleasing mouthful. Damn, this was so good. And coming in at around $10, it's a fair price for the deliciousness it contains. My only complaint is that I didn't try Sus Arepas sooner! Do yourself a favor and make Sus Arepas, sus "your" arepas! The arepa I ordered was soggy, not crispy like it should be, and the filling tasted like it had been sitting out all day--lukewarm and weirdly bland. I'm not even sure what kind of meat was in there... it was chewy and tasted off. The service wasn't great either--slow, disorganized, and the person taking orders acted like they'd rather be anywhere else. On top of that, the prices were way too high for what you get. I was really excited to finally try an arepa, and suffice to say that I really liked them. They are definitely worth the wait at Smorgasburg! Note that as the day goes on, they will sell out of certain items. Original - Surprisingly delicious. The creaminess of the black bean, the sweetness from the plantains, the heat from that green salsa, and the crunch from the fried arepa bun made for a really complete and rounded bite. I liked it more than I thought I would. Rumberra - The pork was a little dry, but the spicy mayo and pickled onion helped it along. I will definitely be back to try more of the menu! read more

One of my favorite spots for arepas in LA. Everything I've tried here has been amazing, but the tequeños and the pabellón are my absolute favorites. The tequeños come out perfectly crispy with that gooey cheese pull, and the pabellón is so flavorful and satisfying. You can really tell they care about the food. My wife and I have passed by this truck a few times. Every time we passed by we always said "one day, one day". Today was that day and it was worth it. The food is great and, before you tell me anything about prices, understand that you're not paying for the facility. You're paying for the effort and passion that goes into cooking and preparing food from scratch. As a Chef myself I am very aware of this. Between my wife and I we ordered the Plantains and garlic tostones. Everyone can relate to the anticipation of that first bite of warm sweet plantains. I had never tried tostones so I was really looking forward to trying them. When the magical moment came and our food was handed over, "wow!" l caught this incredible aroma of garlic wafting directly to my heart. I knew then and there that I had made the right choice. For the Arepas we had 2 Pabellón (Shredded beef, plantains, black beans, cheese and spicy green sauce), one of them without the spicy sauce, 1 Vegan (Black beans, Avocado and plantains), and 1 Ktown (Korean pork marinated in sweet & spicy sauce, onions and cilantro). The Ktown was my favorite however everything was great. Between the warm soft arepas, the tenderness of the meat, and the great crunch of the tostones, I have to say that I was extremely pleased and thankful that we finally pulled over. Next time, I will be trying the chocolate con queso. I have to say the idea of it has really piqued my interest. read more

One of the best arepas I've ever had. Granted, I've probably only had arepas at a handful of other places but this arepa surpassed them all. It came down to the arepa itself - freshly prepared, outstanding maize flavor, texture was spot on - crispy outside, tender inside. The filling took it to the next level - we had the Reina (Shredded Chicken/Avocado Salad with spicy green sauce) - light, refreshing chicken salad rounded out with a nice creamy spice for the spicy green sauce. Tried Sus Arepas at Smorgasburg and thought it was pretty good but not great. What is an arepa? It can be simply described as a grilled corn pocket that's crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside, and stuffed with goods. I opted for the original which featured a white corn arepa filled with black beans, plantains, green sauce, and shredded cheese. With tax before tip, each arepa will cost $7.66. You'll then have to stand off to the side to wait....but for a food truck, I thought the turnaround time was much too slow (-1 star). But good things take time right? Upon receiving my arepa, I was amazed at its size. There was no way to pick up this arepa and eat it like a sandwich...at least not the one I received. But unfortunately, it didn't quite live up to expectations... The white corn doesn't impart as much corn flavor as yellow corn which is what I'm used to comparing it to my favorite arepa place in San Francisco that mixes white and yellow corn. That said, Sus Arepas did grill the arepa well capturing the crispy outside and fluffy inside. I actually thought the arepa itself was the best part of the meal. As for the interior, it was sadly unevenly cooked (-1 star). I had some plantains that were soft and sweet while others were still pretty hard and rather starchy. The soft plantains, when mixed with black beans, green sauce, and cheese hit all the right notes - sweet, savory, smoky, and just a bit spicy. The hard plantains, however, were, at best, difficult to eat. The weak plastic fork totally didn't help, but these pieces required eating the arepa in an almost deconstructed style which was anticlimactic overall. All in all, I'd be willing to give Sus Arepas another try. Hopefully it was just a bad day. read more

Umm. Heck yes. Found this food truck the other day serendipitously. I'm from San Diego and went to a show taping and this truck was down the street during an event. It was this truck or Subway and DUH, why would I pick a chain restaurant? I was originally gonna order two types of arepas but they sold out of my 2nd and 3rd choice so I stuck with an Original arepa. I also got the yucca fries & threw in a beef empanada cuz why not? Oh. My gosh. The Original arepa was soooo good! Such a perfect balance of savory, a little sweet from the plantains and heat from their green sauce. The black beans are seasoned beautifully and the cheese adds a wonderful, melty creaminess to the arepa. The maize vehicle for the arepa is toasty & pillowy at the same time. So delightful! And it is one hefty arepa! The empanada was alright. A lil crisp on the exterior. I was expecting more beef but the inside reminded me more of like a potato dumpling. And the seasoning, if I had to compare it to something I've had before, was like the taco meat in a Taco Bell taco. But omg, the yucca fries! It was my first time having yucca fries and holy moly, so glad I got to munch on these! The outside is very crispy and the inside is starchy, almost how a sweet potato is starchy. The fries are seasoned perfectly and the "ketchup" is a nice addition. It's not an overwhelming amount of sauce which I love. The yucca flavor definitely stands out. They were so flavorful, imma be honest my friend recommended them and the pictures looked great but I was hesitant at first because my moms Colombian friend once made us homemade arepas and I wasn't impressed. Of course she didn't make the extravagant stuffings but maybe that's what was missing. Either way I was happy with my ktown and original arepa. I haven't had an arepa since I went vegan 7 years ago, and it's definitely something that I have missed. Smorgasburg has a wealth of vegan options, but my friends were stuck in a nearby taco line, and Sus Arepas was wide open. I figured I'd grab a little something here and something more substantial elsewhere, having already sized up their one vegan option as a little boring. They proved me wrong on both fronts - a single arepa was very substantial, more like a sandwich than a taco. And the vegan option was wonderful! Flavorful beans, fried plantains, and lots of avocado, on a perfect arepa. It was the perfect lunch, and my friends were jealous with my score while they continued to wait in a very long line. I would love if it included a spicy sauce like the other arepas do - perhaps the sauce isn't vegan? I don't know. And of course, would love more vegan options! What an awesome experience eating Arepas in the summer evening. Right off the bat the customer service is so inviting. I received nothing but smiles and good food from this truck. I order The Original, The K-town, and the Reina. I loved the crunch of every bite from their corn tortilla. I loved the Reina the most due to spicy green sauce paired with chicken including avocado. It's a fresh and filling which are perfect for summer nights. The light kick with spicy green sauce is superb. The K-town was not the most impressive arepas only due to the fact I did imagine the spicy Korean pork being spicier but over all great presentation and good. High hopes but they were sold out of the Korean style arepas with pork. So instead, I went with the original. The wait was a little long given that I was at the Burbank food truck rally on the last Friday of the month on Magnolia Blvd. Food truck prices are always a little higher, but it's worth the gamble. The original came out with an assortment inside that was not as warm as expected and the mix really just tasted mushy and I couldn't tell exactly what I was tasting. Not the best arepas but enough to scratch the itch. If I see the truck again I'll get the Korean arepa to give it another shot. Aside from the main course, their yucca garlic fries were delicious, hot sauce was available along with tiny peppers which is just what I needed. These were spicy so don't be shy about drinking water. Maybe I am just a traditionalist and wanted the original that to be what we ate in the mother land. Absolutely LOVED this food truck. First of all, the truck itself was so cute. I loved the hand-written signs, nicely decorated truck, and the tables/chairs to sit. The menu was very simple, which is always a plus. There were just enough options, and the sides looked so delicious (I regretted not ordering one to go!). We tried the "Rumbera" and "Reina" arepas - I preferred the Rumbera but they were both so delicious. The "bread" (I believe was made out of corn) was crispy on the outside, and soft on the inside, the pulled pork was seasoned really well and it was topped with white cheese - if I had any space I would have eaten another one. The Reina was an avocado chicken salad, definitely an amazing combination. They were really big in size, and weren't greasy at all which was what I was originally worried about. I went back at the end of the day to order some empanadas to go, but they had already sold out. I bet they were amazing, I'll have to act fast next time I go.
