We first came to Ant in May 2024 for our 5 year-old son's first surfing lesson. He worked with us to ensure that our kiddo would have the best day in the water by keeping us updated on the weather and surf reports -- he tailored our session around "the best day" for it -- which turned out to be perfect! Our kiddo was standing up on the board in no time and riding waves all the way in! Ant made the experience so fun that our kiddo was instantly hooked and has been surfing since! He even asked that if we ever go back to Kauai if he could see Ant again. Here we are, it's June 2025 (a year after from our 1st session), and our kiddo got to have his second session with Ant! He was so excited to be back on the same beach and show Ant how much more confident he is on the board. This time Ant's daughter was there to assist, since there was another family that joined us in our session. Ant and his daughter made the whole experience smooth and fun, ensuring everyone had equal support and attention. He was tracking 87,000 things at once - giving feedback on the form/technique of the person who just caught a wave, watching for the next wave to launch an adult student, verbal cues for his daughter and the littles. I've been surfing on the coast of Washington state and in Panama as well as trying out Kailea beach on my own this week, and I caught more waves today than I had in all the other times combined!! No rush, no attitude, no "tourist trap" vibe. Just people who know what they're doing and treat you with respect. After that, we had an amazing time out on the river. Peaceful water, beautiful views -- exactly what we came for. Four hours flew by without even noticing. If I'm back on the island, I won't even think twice. We checked several other spots first,…read moreand everywhere else either had much higher prices or a bunch of restrictions and hidden fees (like charging $100 just to put a board on your car roof). None of that here. They have very reasonable prices, good-quality boards, and the staff helps you choose the right size board and paddle. We paid only $30 per person for a half-day SUP rental and $25 for a full day surfboard rental, which is a great deal for this area. One thing I'd recommend though - double-check that the staff actually secures the rope when they strap the boards to your car. The employee didn't want our help, but a few minutes into the drive the boards started coming loose. Luckily, we had a Jeep Wrangler with an open roof, so we were able to hold them. Turned out the ropes weren't even properly tied, just kinda thrown on. Hopefully this was just a one-off, especially since they do keep your card on file in case anything happens to the boards. Overall though best prices and conditions in town. Definately recommend!

All i brought with me were my swim fins and an extra bicep leash I had. I was looking for a legit bodyboard rental and the shops I had been to and/or the beach side rental shacks had boards that just werent up to par. I was down the road at Tamba buying tees and the guy there (thankfully) referred me to Kapaa Beach Shop when I asked if he knew of any places that had quality bodyboard rentals. He told me Mike at KBS rented Mike Stewart Science Bodyboards.... The look of shock on my face was probably photo worthy. I couldnt believe the type of place I had been looking for was just down the road. It was already my 2nd time in Kapaa by that point. Kapaa Beach Shop is on your right side along Kuhio Highway if you are coming from the Lihue area. It's right after Chicken in a Barrel BBQ. It has about 4 dedicated spaces out front in its gravel driveway. They rent everything from beach umbrellas, chairs, bicycles, diving and snorkeling gear... You name it. You need it for the beach, he has it. It was jamming with customers the both times I went there but Mike was gracious and helpful with all of us. I was able to rent a hybrid Mike Stewart Science bodyboard which I used at a few beaches on the island. It was great. Thick board with lots of float to it, making catching waves easier. It also came with a Gyroll bicep leash... It was like a setup I would gladly have every day back home. I'm thankful to Mike for the Aloha and just being super cool in providing a quality rental. We chatted it up a bit and you can tell he is legit and really knows his stuff. I HIGHLY recommend you go see Mike at Kapaa Beach Shop for all your beach rental needs. He is the man. Mahalos Mike! In the water it's mostly small rocks. If you explore the other side of the cove the rocks in the water are larger, sharper and slippery. Really fun beach with lots of crabs and coconuts. The snorkeling by the rocks on the far side of the cove is not fantastic but still worth doing. Lots or larger tangs and butterfly fish.
