We had a fantastic experience with our surfing lessons. I did the lesson with my 11-year-old son, and he loved it so much that he asked to book another session for the very next day, which we ended up doing. We had lessons with Adam and Austin, and both were excellent instructors. They watched what we were doing closely and gave really helpful, specific tips after each attempt to point out what we were doing wrong and how to fix it. Their feedback made a big difference and helped us improve quickly. They were also very thoughtful with my son. On both days, the instructors carried his surfboard down to the beach for him, which made things much easier and showed how attentive they were. Another thing that stood out was that they provided both rash guards and booties. From what I saw when looking at other companies, many seemed to provide rash guards but not booties, so that was a nice extra that made the experience more comfortable in the water. Overall, it was a great experience and I'd highly recommend them to anyone looking for surfing lessons. read more

This was such a fun experience to do with my son and 2 nieces. We were the whole group. Perfect day in Poipu to go surfing as it was windy but not crazy. Our instructor Adam was the man! He was patient and had his class was well run on land and then in the ocean. I have gone surfing a few times so he had some intermediate tips for me. Dude was super patient and chill the whole time. I had a surf lesson for 1.5 hours at 9am this morning with my Uncle by Adam. I made an attempt to try surfing on my own for a couple hours the previous day with little success. Adam was very patient and experienced and got me to catch a wave within the first 15 minutes of being in the water. He helped me get my timing down to with my pop up and feet positioning keyed in. He was happy to explain what we were looking for wave wise and how to position myself well. I'm a strong swimmer but I think Adam's coaching saved me a few burned calories but showing easier routes to get to prime water. read more

If you are in Po'ipu, this is an awesome activity. I am a first time surfer and instructor Adam did a great job with a safety orientation and instruction on land before taking us out in the waves. On each run he'd gently coach before selecting a wave and giving our boards a little push. We'd paddle back out and he'd be ready with another coaching tip for a next, better run. Water - perfect 75 degrees. Equipment in great shape. Everyone got up on the board at least once. If your fitness level is OK and you can swim, this is a FIVE STAR adventure that will leave you with a big smile on your face. read more

Can we just say Kenui (Kenouie?) IS THE MAN! When you want to learn how to surf, you need someone: - Chill - Deep surfer vibes - Hilarious AF - Great instructor - Looks out for their students - Creates a fun, safe experience - Gives helpful, 1 on 1 feedback - Lets you walk away feeling like a CHAMP who knows how to surf. Kenui was all that and more. We went to Hawaii during that crazy time of June, when even U-Haul's were rented out and we had to haggle with some rando on Craigslist just to get a rental car. Yeahhhh new lesson: don't ever go somewhere when 1/2 of Cali and their moms want to go, too. It ain't gonna be good! We were delighted to see a number of highly rated surf schools not too far from us, and Hawaiian Style Surfing had a few spots open. We booked about 4 days ahead. It was about $85/person for a full hour. The first 15 minutes, they're going over surfing tips and safety. You carry your board to the ocean and they really know how to look for the right spot. Not too crowded, good waves, etc. It's a pretty small group - max 3-4 students so you get a lot of attention. Only one person goes at a time. What was super helpful was Kenui telling us exactly when to go, and when to try standing, then giving feedback each time to try the next time down. I actually caught my very 3rd wave, and my man caught his on the very first! All of us in our group caught the wave within 4-5 tries which says something about the instructor! I had an incredible experience with Adam (instructor at Hawaiin Style Surfing). I was a self-taught surfer who had never had a lesson and had not surfed in over two years. I was very rusty. Adam taught me how to surf correctly and how to surf the area waves (coast of Koloa/Kauai/ next to Sheraton Hotel). I got up a few times, and it was a great feeling. No matter what level you are in surfing (from beginner to novice), I think you can always benefit from a lesson with Adam. Holy moly-- was Billy was a great teacher. I don't usually leave reviews, but I needed to leave one for him. I had tried my hand in surfing before with a private instructor too, shared with one other and I couldn't catch a wave. I didn't know why bc I thought I was really good at learning. Not to mention I had to stop early into the lesson because my thighs got really raw from the surf board (I was doing it all wrong). After talking to Billy about my past experience he immediately told me it was odd and that it's all about the technique. Low and behold, after learning his technique. I catch my first wave comfortably and effortlessly even in my first couple of tries! He was also very encouraging. I'm clumsy and I caught at least 90% of the waves I was attempting! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!!! Don't hesitate booking. Small group class sizes and you could even get a private lesson with group price if you're lucky no one signs up! read more

My boyfriend and I decided to take a surfing lesson to kick off our trip in Kauai. We came for the first lessons of the day at 9AM, and were super lucky to be the only two students that Billy had that morning. Billy is an awesome teacher, sporting 15 years of teaching experience on top of a lifetime of surfing. Even though I'm really uncoordinated and apprehensive about any new sport, he coached us through the motions until we felt confident on land before moving into the water. Once in the water, he allowed us to move at our own pace, advancing the students that were picking up the motions faster (my bf), while focusing the students who take a little longer to learn (me, lol). By the end of it, I was actually able to catch a few waves and stand to shore -- something that no other instructor has been able to make happen. We're so grateful to Billy for making surfing a part the rest of our trip (we were able to get out on the water the next few days with what we learned). Thank you Billy!! read more

Our instructor Kenui did a great job of teaching us good techniques for getting up to a standing position on the board. We had great weather on the beach at Poipu, and both had good, successful rides even on our second time ever surfing. The boards we used for the lesson were in excellent condition. After speaking with one of the instructors by the pool we signed up our 10 year old son and 9 year old girl for a lesson. Noah spent 90 minutes with them and was really great! The spot that was used was close to the resort, safe and perfect for 2 kids who hadn't been on a surf board before. Pricing was about what I expected and the kids got up and ride many waves into the shore so they didn't get frustrated or scared and had a great time. Honestly, it's an experience. The trainer Stephen was ok but a little impatient and a bit frustrated due to us not being of his standard or should i say irritated of our lack of experience. We were 30mins late due to backed up traffic. Everybody don't surf everyday and we're from memphis where there's no beaches only pools and jacuzzi's. Have you some some goggles (that covers nose and mouth), because the water is of course very much salty and burns your eyes bad, so when you fall off the board you're not struggling to open your eyes and get back on the board while he yells at you to hurry up. You can hurt yourself on those boards while in the water because the cord is connected to your ankle and board so you won't loose it in the water. When a wave comes and you're not on the board while the wave or tide is coming it will smack whatever body part that's near and it doesn't discriminate. BE SAFE & careful!!! looks fun but definitely not easy if you are not experienced. Overall, it was an ok experience won't do it again but it was ok. I have so much respect for you surfers b/c you have to be in shape to be good at it and it's exhausting when you're not inshape. Oh and there a nice gentleman taking all your pics good bad funny & not funny. i say try, but be very prepared and aware!!!!!!! read more

10/10 recommend! To be honest I was a tad nervous when I woke up and thought about going surfing cause... sharks! But Noa made it a freaking blast and all of my anxiety relating to surfing quickly disappeared. The waves aren't too crazy and you feel pretty safe and learn a ton. If you are going to surf with them, pay attention during the land lesson. And scoot your feet back, I sucked at that and was important when I got up. My 12 year old daughter had an amazing time! She learned to surf! Her smile was ear to ear the whole time, from surfing all the way in to the shore to the epic wipe-outs. The location is a perfect condition to learn safely. The instructor (Noa) was kind and patient with the whole group and really met everyone's needs. This was by far one of our highlights of the trip. I want to also complement Hawaiian Style Surfing for offering a free demo at our pool hotel. The instructor (Billy) was wonderful to offer the experience without any pressure to book a lesson.
